    From the moment they meet, lyricist and vaudeville star Bert Kalmar (Fred Astaire) and piano player and song huckster Harry Ruby (Red Skelton) are destined for great things. The two have nothing in common except the ability to craft chart-topping songs and a lifelong friendship. Now, through work, women, setbacks and success these two reach the heights of their profession and overcome a rift that threatens to divide them forever. Featuring the songs "Three Little Words," "Who's Sorry Now," "Thinking of You" and "Where Did You Get That Girl."
    Directed By Richard Thorpe
    Starring Fred Astaire, Vera-Ellen, Red Skelton

    I just saw this for the first time.
    Wow.
    As a dancer, I've long been told that my main job is to make my partner look good. Fred Astaire is so gifted, his partners end up making HIM look good. But Vera-Ellen is no appendage. I once read that Vera-Ellen is one of only two dancers (Eleanor Powell being the other) who could keep up with Fred Astaire. She kept up with him in this routine, and they both pull it off flawlessly.
    Well, almost flawlessly . . . you just don't handle a baby that way . . .

    • @fionatsang9353
      @fionatsang9353 5 років тому +31

      I agree, Fred and Vera-Ellen were marvelous together, such a shame they only collaborated on two movies. Eleanor Powell was a fantastic dancer - apparently so good even Fred was intimidated by her, in his words she 'put 'em down like a man' - but she perhaps lacked some of the chemistry his other partners had with him.
      Probably my favourite partner for Fred was Rita Hayworth; again they only did two movies together, but they were so brilliant. See if you can find 'So Near Yet So Far' from You'll Never Get Rich, they are incredibly well matched in that number!

    Mate, I could watch this stuff all day, just brilliant. And wonderful to see it in colour - so many of these old clips are in B&W, and I can't help but wonder when I watch them how spectacular they would have been in colour.

    Add the phone bit at 1:33 to Fred Astaire's routines with the coat rack, the golf club, the drums and oh so many canes! Anything that man touched became more graceful and animated, whether a female partner or some everyday object. Almost supernatural.

    My three favorite dance routines are this one, coffee time and with tap dance with Rita Hayworth , the shorty George. Astaire seems to enjoy dancing those particular numbers

    Every time I see a new dance excerpt featuring Vera Ellen, my opinion is reinforced that she was definitely the best female dancer in Hollywood. She was so supple which is why her body could move with such swiftness and agility. Her experience as a ballet dancer is also in full evidence. Sure this number of Vera and Fred is good, but to see the very best of their dances, you will have to see "The Belle of New York". Vera's dancing is mind blowing, the likes of which you can never ever hope to see again on the silver screen. My best male dancer was without doubt, Tommy Rall. Boy, did he have every move in the book plus looks!!!
