This shows more talent, and entertainment than anything made in the last 20 years. I couldn't stop smiling. It's strange, but it makes me nostalgic for a time, I was never alive for.
This number still plays on the idea that they had some kind of rivalry going on - and they were literally like night and day; Gene was tough and abrasive, Fred was quiet and retiring; Gene was a liberal agnostic, Fred was a church-going Republican; and yet by all accounts they had nothing but respect for each other and got along perfectly well.
Gene could never get his hands on enough projects, Fred was always trying to retire (just wanted to add that fact to your format :). Also I remember an interview with one of their families which said Gene was quoted saying it was a pleasure working with Fred, but that Fred was a mad who you needed to keep on toes for. There’s also a clear style difference between the two, as Astaire is often cited as seeming more at ease and natural about his movements (as if he’d been doing the theatricality of the moves for so long that they’d become second nature) while Kelly seemed more thought out and intentional (as if he worked hard and rehearsed tirelessly to nail the theatricality, and he succeeded in mastering the appearance of gliding across the screen with practice).
Both men were self-critical to the extreme, which kind of made them what they were. The first two sections were pretty much in Mr. Kelly's style, which Mr. Astaire did very well. For part of the third Gene had to adapt to Fred's, and just could not watch himself in it later on, saying he 'looked like a clod'. Quite illuminating. I am watching this on Gene's 110th birthday. Thank you for the many hours of great artistry, sir!
(It's actually ridiculous how good this is.) The Two Greatest Dancers in Classic Hollywood (Ray Bolger, no slouch himself, affirmed this in one of the "That's Entertainment" Anthologies), playing together like dolphins in a temperate environment. And note the undercurrent of good-natured "competition:" They both knew what a huge, one-time-only collaboration this was, and played it up for all it was worth.
You can tell that Michael Jackson really studied Fred Astaire. Fred's body was DANCE. He didn't merely do the dance; he WAS the dance. He paid attention to the smallest of details. He danced with every inch of his body; his eyes, his head, his lips, his hands. His walk was dance. His handshakes were dance. His wave was dance. He danced when he sat, danced when he stood up. Danced when he walked. How could one person be that darned good?!! Michael Jackson understood this and you could tell in all of his performances.
@@yogajedi3337, MJ studied those whom he loved. James Brown, Jackie Wilson and Fred Astaire were among a few of the people he admired. He took things from them, whether big or small, and incorporated them into his performances. Fred Astaire actually loved MJ and was supposed to have been in the "Thriller" video. Of course, MJ was not the classically trained dancer that Astaire was, but MJ understood that EVERYTHING could be in the performance; the smallest movement of the body, limbs, eyes, etc., just like Astaire, whom I personally think was THE BEST. MJ's "Smooth Criminal" video was a tribute to Astaire's performance is "The Band Wagon." I've posted a video that shows the similarities. ua-cam.com/video/B0GWCk9wnak/v-deo.html

Forget that these are two of the best dancers the world has ever known, they were tremendous athletes. I don't know when this was filmed, but Astair was no spring chicken here. His agility, stamina, and grace are remarkable...as of course are Gene's. Thanks for posting this. What a treat.
This is a fantastic number for these two. Allows them both to demonstrate their own slant on the same moves while complimenting each other and simultaneously highlighting each’s strengths. Brought a huge smile to my face to see these two greats showcased in such a manner.
I come back to this very often. I am so very grateful that we have this masterpiece in our lives. I love them both but there is something about Gene Kelly that will always win me over. No matter how neutral I try to be when I watch this, my eyes always go back to him. But Fred's technique though... Two incredibly gifted legends...
Such Athleticism and grace. Still I’m a Gene girl. Back then you needed to be a triple threat to succeed, Singing, dancing and acting. Miss this wonderful time in history of the arts!!
I’ve only just made 30 years old a month ago but my entire childhood I’ve been fascinated with gene kelly, I was the oddball of my siblings because we’re a African American family and they’re into rap and r&b, don’t get me wrong,I’m in love with all of that including classic soul, rock, soft rock, etc. but when I would sit and watch gene jelly,Shirley temple, and other great classic movies it felt like I was in my own versatile world, where all kinds of eras were surrounding me!!! 😁
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
I love how this had a story, a song, and a dance. You can tell the whole story through anyone of those 3 things and they do. If you turn the sound off and just watch the set pieces and dancing you’d get exactly what’s happening, and if you just hear the song you’d have a pretty good idea
Gene's characters were not perfect nice guys. They were not mean, but they were not 100% straight. I think I saw he himself saying this like "i never did the 100% good guy". they had always a flaw. Like, Joe in "anchors aweigh" and o'brien in "take me out.. " they lied. In "for me and my gal" he was selfish... let alone the non musicals. But you loved him anyway because you cannot not love him :D
In order for the current generations to understand the greatness of this moment that when these meet and dance with each other, it is like if Ronaldo and Messi met in a television interview or played a match.
This is from "Ziegfeld Follies", a 1945 "revue" film with a variety of music and comedy acts. A film of modest merits, but this scene is far and away the best.
Esplêndio! Fantástico 👏👏👏❤! Já não se fazem filmes assim tão bacanas e super lindo! Isso é uma preciosidade, uma relíquia! É Show de verdade 😃! Parabéns 👏👏👏 boa noite! Gratidão por compartilhar 😘💞🌹🌻!

the proof that there are no time travelers: no one came up with a video in a cell phone showing these two gentlemen rehearsing this number. When I get a time machine, this will be the first thing I'll do
Would've been great to see them in a movie together but im just happy to have known that they did work together and were good friends - hate it when the media of the day tries to create stupid rivalry when stars of that calibre actually do respect each others talents as they know the level hard work and time put into which ever craft they are involved in
Fantastic, and so much fun! The dialogue is memorable, the whole concept of 2 friends meeting... How many hours of rehearsal to get to this perfection of their skills? No gimmicks, no lights, no scenery, just pure artistry!
Oh my goodness, where have I been? This might possibly be one of the greatest clips I've ever seen. This can't help but bring a smile to my face regardless of how I'm feeling. Thanks for posting this masterpiece.
I wish they did a movie together when Gene Kelly's character has trouble dancing with a girl and Charming her. It's up to Fred Astaire to teach Junior how to become a Charming dancing Ladies Man.
That would have been incredible just imagine the dances we could of got it would have been incredible, to bad nothing likr that ever happened at least we got one.
It is so sad that this is the one and only time these two danced together. One of my favorites
You'll be happy to know that you're wrong. Look it up.
Someone once said, "Fred Astaire made dancing look easy. Gene Kelly reminded us how difficult it is."
@@sunrise8263 hey I kind of love that quote, you remember who said it?
They danced together again in That's Entertainment Part II 30 years after this.
@@edpinto8335 I did, me and bojangles was teaching mista astaire the soft shoe a steppin
I love how their dialogue gave a nod to the two actresses who can actually keep up with their dancing: Ginger and Rita.
LMAO “you’re not Rita Hayworth” “No I’m not, Ginger”
That line made me laugh as well!
I also loved Gene's little self satisfied wiggle when he mentioned "Cover Girl."
@@susanlloyd7395 If I were him, I'd be proud of that too.
Just watching this clip and that's such a funny joke.
For people that said La La Land has the best dance scene all the time, I guess they never see Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly dancing.
lmao la la land didn't even have professional musical actors as protagonists 💀
It's possible to watch this a million times and then say to yourself, Oh go on then, one more time.
This shows more talent, and entertainment than anything made in the last 20 years. I couldn't stop smiling. It's strange, but it makes me nostalgic for a time, I was never alive for.
I think we still made good things but certainly whit way less charm

Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly performing together is really wonderful, and it is also a classic forever.👍❤
Agree ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Fred: hello
Gene: how are u?
Fred: how's the wife?
Gene: she died

Gene looked fine in that section he just didn't look as good as possible because Fred was next to him
Imagine looking this amazing and thinking you looked like a clod.
