I Have this bag and I like it because of the many compartments and the durability too. Generaly I am not a fan of the military look, but this bag in black looks to me urban and stylish enough to take it to the office. The main negative of this bag is for me, that it's pretty heavy. But in general I fully agree Bo, great Bag for any purpose and for lifetime use!
BO, I've added additional 5.11 tier straps which compressed it right down ( can go almost flat with the gridmlock trick when needed ) waist strap , I also fitted fidlock at chest & waist belt. It's made it perfect. Done the same to my Rush 24 which is almost the same size when compressed. Now the molle etc is common on cheaper eBay/amazon packs I think it no longer stands out in public I see so many knock offs, Great review.
Finally picked one of these bags at the 5.11 store in Las Vegas. It was on sale for 39.99 till they run out. The sales person told me they are coming out with a new version soon!
Saw that you used the Rush12 originally, so was waiting for the video to come out, glad to see you pulled it out of storage! I used the Rush12 for years, carried it into work (office at a large tech co) and around the world on travel, great bag. Added shock cord to the side as a bottle holder. Recently switched to the more minimal Heimplanet Monolith Daypack, which is also great, but a little more subdued. I do occasionally miss all the organization the 5.11 offered though. Now I have 2 little admin pouches that carry my important items, easy to throw into my bike as the Heimplanet won't fit in the top case.
They are not in the same league, used the Rush 24 throughout college and currently about two years in with a GR1. The Rush wasn't bad at all, but the GR1 is just better in most ways for my use.
I just bought a Rush 12 today and I love it. I will use it as a work pack (military) and I can even fit my DoD laptop in the water bladder compartment.
Solid backpack. I have used it for my daily commute for 18 months. I have added a molle bottle holder to the side of the bag and attach a second holder if i am out with the kids. The biggest downside of this bag for me is that in heavy rain the top pocket ('sun glass' pocket) can have water seep through the zipper and soak anything inside it. I am currently looking for a wet weather cover for it but try to avoid heavy rain in it.
I'm using a 511 rush 24 as my main bag, i pretty much use it daily and when i go travel. I add some eva foam for the lack of padding to ensure the safety of my electronics. The look of the bag sure do says tactical with a capital everywhere but as tactical look and style becoming a trend nowadays i getting less and less people staring at me like some military geek..
I love 5.11 gear. You should take a look at 5.11 Covert 18. I think you'd love it. I carry a Rush 72 as my daily for the last 7 years. Cant go wrong with Maxpedition but their stuff runs small to me.
I have been using it for a bit more than a year now and I am completely in love with it. plus, having a smaller laptop (14" dell latitude) it looks even better :)
Thank you, sir. I've been using rush24 God knows how long. But now I wanted to buy a rush 12 for my gf. And question with size of a laptop was so heavy. That I've literally spent couple of hours on the internet with all sorts of wacky descriptions. Thank you for providing measurements for laptop in main compartment
I think for someone who just needs a large compartment to fill with stuff or pouches inside, this would do especially if you want something more durable and on the affordable side. I myself purchased the 5.11 Rush 72 for one bag travel, I got it for a sweet deal here in Vietnam where they are made. Just a big bucket to load how I wish while still giving me some organization whether I choose to use or not.
I was considering this bag for a long time, but I couldn't get over the idea of the straps being held together by plastic buckles instead of reinforced batwings stitched into the bag. But recently I was lucky to find a Goruck Echo in Auckland. And I can finally say I've found the best backpack !
They are actually solid. I can't say if they are as solid as the batwings on Gorucks but they never seemed like they were about to break or fail when I was using the Rush. They are also great if you're in a tight space and need to remove one side of the strap to access the pack.
Hey Alfred, I have bothe the Goruck and the 5.11. ANd I actually like both. I talked to a soldier once, because I was wondering why there are these plastic buckles on the 5.11. And he explained to me that this is actually pretty important if you need to get of the bag really quickly in a life threatening situation. And in terms of carrying a heavy load they are actually pretty durable from my experience.
Wow. I'm looking for a review of 5.11 Rush 12 backpack. And not only you good at reviewing it, that your scenario (urban, multimedia EDC backpack) is exactly what I'm looking for. I only discovered recently that you are a fellow Indonesian too. Also, to soften the look of any tactical backpack.. just attach "civilian" morale patch. I myself attach a patch of my favorite band (Green Day) on my Direct Action Dragon Egg backpack.
Hard to find a bag that can beat the Rush 12 really. It does soo much and i keep going back to it because of how i'm able to customize my loadout. Plus 1050D nylon is overkill for how much this bag costs. Its really good
Check out the 5.11 Rapid Origin pack. Almost the same pack, lighter material, dedicated laptop pocket. Comes in multiple colors too. Only setback is that you'll have to add your own admin pouch.
Just my opinion The lack of a laptop compartment is not a minus, the bag is made for general use, so a laptop sleeve if it works so be it and if you can live with it. As far its appearance in office environment, at least hear in the USA its not that big of a deal, I've seen executives carrying them and in Camo too. I think being a black bag it probably goes un-noticed, now if you had all kinds of weapon pouches on it, then I could see some concern lol The Rush is a great bag. I just started using a new backpack a Kriega R25 and I'm digging it, yes it does not have a laptop section but I just use a sleeve for my laptop. I don't always need my laptop as much as I use too, my mobile phone handles much of my business needs. I like the quad lock system easy on and off and I can ride my motorcycles without straps in the way and nothing is flapping around. Yes it costs a lot but its worth, (I still need to explain why I spent $300.00 USD on motorcycle boots 😆) it's not big enough to carry my camera gear, but I ordered a Sony a6400 for when I want to travel light on the bike. BTW my morale pouch video is in the works, I did record a sort of opening of the envelope and I got home and I had video but no audio .
Thanks, Donald. Looking forward to your video. The "acceptance" of military looking bags or outfits in general probably depends on the country. Here in Germany those military bags always attract a certain look ;-) The Kriega is great on the bike. But I found it's preshaped backpanel to be slightly difficult for loading my computer
@@Youknowthebo The Kreiga R25 works good, although I think my laptop is smaller and thinner than your Mac Book pro, I got a Mac Book Air 13. I'm also looking into getting Kreiga's US 5 or US10 pouch it clips right onto my bag, I can also mount the same bag as a tail or tank bag. Thanks for the reply Cheers
As always a great video Mister Bo, I use a Cannae Pro Gear Legion Day Pack, is similar but with the laptop compartment, cost me 75 USD. I use it in an office with no problems.
great review, Bo! I was torn apart between teh 5.11 Rush 24 and the Tasmanian Tiger Modular Pack 30 a year and a half ago. I went for the TT MP 30 for its more modular customisability (molle velcro inside, lasercut molle outside). Since a 30L pack is often a bit too big, I use my 5.11 Rush Delivery Lima messenger bag for university or work. This also fits a 15'' laptop, has enough room for some documents/books, something to eat and my 1L nalgene flask. You can also customise it through molle webbing on the outsice. Since I have discovered military bags with MOLLE, I didnt have a single time when I used a non-military style bacpack or messenger bag .... the modularity and usability is just not beaten by any product that I know. Being able to adopt to changing situations by changing pouches (like the AOKU ones I reviewed last year) and the whole pack layout is just too great. And both bags are not too aggressively looking for my taste or work environments.
@@Youknowthebo as soon as we finally manage to meet up (whenever that might be) you can take a look at my bag and how I use it if you want. Or should I just do a review on it in the next week on my own channel? would you be interested in my thoughts about the pack?
Great review. I was carrying a Condor pack as a carry-on and was asked about military service enough I almost felt like a poser. Ended up with a Camelbak Urban Assault for EDC and carry-on duties. Great features and more under the radar.
Thank you very much. I can imagine that if you use a military style bag in certain parts of the world people might assume that you are in the military.
Thanks for the review just went and got this bag and will work for me when we travel with one bag travel.Plenty of room for me with the use of packing cubes I can travel for 2 weeks very easy.
I highly suggest reviewing the GreenRoom136 Rainmaker. Almost the perfect blend of tactical and urban. I made a custom one off their website and should be taking delivery of it shortly as they’re located in Malaysia. From what I’ve seen in reviews, the materials are top of the line and the organization is amazingly detailed.
Nice review Bo. For now I prefer clean aesthetic but I have to admit MOLLE attachment points are awesome and incredibly versatile. It’s great to have a Molle panel inside a bag to attach all your pouches
you know, Bo; having abandoned backpacks years ago, for messengerbags. Then you happened, and suddenly my backs´ much needed return to the backpack became übercool. Now, I am a MW man, so I obviously went for the Rhake when it came out. loved your review of it back then too.
Hi. I had one bulky 5.11 backpack but sold it. Then I was thinking about buying Rush12, but went for Triple Aught Design Lightspeed Fast Pack as my EDC bag. It doesn't have front compartment so it looks smooth. Pros:Versatile design, comfortable shoulder straps(to be honest 5.11 straps I like more) and tough materials. Cons: even if it's empty it feels heavy ~2kg+ due to Cordura 1050D. Nevertheless, Rush12 is one of the best durable EDC bags.
Hey Bo, any chance you'd be able to get your hands on and review a Ridgemont Ranger backpack? They're on preorder right now but you might be able to get them to send you one now for a review
With 2.0 you can use the ccw compartment as a nice n easy water bottle holder thatll easily swallo 32 oz and still leave usable admin pouch (as long as you load the admin pouch "vertically".
I've had this backpack for years now and I don't find it very EDC friendly because of the wide padded shoulder straps. But it is good and comfy though on long hikes when you don't need to take it off as often. And you are right on the aggressive looking part. And I'm way over my "tacticool" days now.haha
I wish the bag wasn't so "molle-ed up". I don't want to look like a commando when I go to the office. I don't plan to attach a Ka-Bar Marine Fighting Knife to the outside.
I use the Hydration pouch for my Macbook air during the week and whenever im around urban environments and when im out field i switch it to hydration pouches
Having one, and gave away after 2 days of using. No laptop antishock compartment, easy to understand because it was not made for it, no side pocket. In order to utilise, you have to buy more pouches so as to increase space (bottle, umbrella, ...) and for quick accessing, the backpack itself is very basic to use. Perhaps it’s good, but not for my needs, a man livng in a city. Buying separate pockets put inside a bigger bag is a bad idea (my opinion), it slows you down a lot when it comes to access any tool you need (unpack more than once). This bag may come in useful for those who on the battle field or living in a remote area, where they have to make evrything by themselves for surviving everyday.
Interesting review, but I was also researching through 5.11 backpacks to choose one for my edc bag. And think 5.11 AMP 24 + Admin Gear Set might be better than rush, it looks cooler than rush, has leptop pocket and it's fully customizable. I'd like to hear what do you think about amp 24. cheers!
I have a rush 12 exactly for a year and I am in love with this backpack. It offers many features and the difference between them aside of the design is very negligible, rush has a more classic design. you have to pay a lot of money to have the extra bags which in my opinion is just a gimmick without anything special. you can attach pouches on the rush with the molle system to serve the same functionality like on amp. I also bought the Rush 24 for hiking and for the extra space.
@@ninjaneil902 i cant help you on this, it differs from country to country. try your local tactical shops, or ebays/ second hand selling platform. its cheap stuffs and certainly not worth buying international...
I carry a military backpack as my edc to work.. but it's fairly compact so I run out of room real quick...I'm still looking around for an upgrade but I'm not sure if I should still go for the military backpack or an urban pack. I chose to use military backpacks mainly because of the durability, molle and also the compartments. Although so far I'm considering the rush 24 instead of 12 to replace 3 of my backpacks..
The only downside, as you mentioned, is that the design screams "military" LOL. That's why I use carabiner, pen, and "camera/photographer" patch to make it like a hiking bag , to make it more "civilian"🤣
Would you reccomend this bag for the gym or for taking to the beach? I have a Nomatic Travel Pack that I use everyday, but not for the gym, neither if I want to go to the beach, so for those I m left with cheap options that are getting really old and just failing in being functional...
Thanks for watching. I guess the decision comes down to what you want to pack and how you want to utilize the bag. This is great for edc. The rush24 is much bigger and more in line of a bag that you want to use for travel
The only issue with the bags is that they literally scream EDC. Any would be thief knows that bag is valuable. It seems counterintuitive but something that looks less military, dirty, worn, and most importantly has some colors/reflective labeling, fits in to a modern crowd better (think daypack style). I used to have a marmot in Gray/lime green that could hold a case of beer but would cinch down to a little bigger than a Camelback, that worked great! Just rubbed some dirt I'm the bright parts to keep it looking shabby. 😎
How did you unlock the lightning sliders?? I also have a black backpack and the zippers blend in with the backpack. I want to change the zipper sliders from black to gray

Hello Bo, I got a question. So when you talking about 15’’ laptop. Do you mean 15.6 or just 15”. I got a 15.6 in laptop but everybody make their video telling that this backpack can fit 15 inch backpack. Just wondering will it be too small. Are they actually talking about a 15.6? Thanks.
While this bag isn't my EDC, I've had one for a while and used it when hiking or for short trips, sometimes together with the 5.11 RUSH MOAB10. While I generally like the bag quite a bit, when I start to load more weight into it I find that it becomes very uncomfortable. The broad straps dig into my armpits and the sternum strap is a bit too high on my chest. Combined with the relatively low rigidity of the back plate, it becomes uncomfortable fast. Admittedly the bag isn't meant for heavier loads, and maybe I just have a weird back, but I'm assuming that it was designed to be worn over a combat vest.
Thanks for sharing your experiences with the Rush12. I haven't noticed the straps digging into me at all. Do you wear the bag high or low on your back? I prefer wearing it pretty high, maybe that's the difference?
@@Youknowthebo I also tend to wear backpacks high up, but when I pack it to the brim I need to wear it lower to make use of the waist belt. This is probably not a common issue, especially if you use the bag as intended.
Lighter interior in terms of visibility. With darker fabric inside a bag I sometimes have trouble finding stuff. Look at my Topo design klettersack review. It has a bright yellow inner lining. It makes finding stuff even in darker environments much easier.
I have one Rush 24 (old version) and have been using it daily for over three years with no issue. Tough like a tank though a bit heavy. Just ordered one extra Rush 12 (2.0). May I know how could I change the zipper like your (Red colour in some zipper)? Where did you purchased these different colour zipper sling? Could you kindly share with me the purchase link?
I really love my recycled firefighter bag which has a padded laptop compartment. I just wish it had molle loops on the inside to customize. Molle inserts are $90 which is too much.
Beefy backpack without padding Hmmmmmmm.... Not my bag. But I don't mind Tacticool style bag whether EDC or Travel. But I do carry Waterfield Bolt backpack to work, EDC with Alchemy Equipment AEL222, Minimalist with DAYFARER Sling. And yes I don't own any Tactical Backpack at all :)
Hey Bo, the Rush 12 is one of my first as well, love it, while in my ever-lasting search for the perfect bag. That said, have you found the best motorcycling (as well as all-around) bag (that's not motorcycle focused) for you? Care to share? (Or make a vid). If you do have a vid, I may have missed it. Thanks!
Hey Mike, Yes, I currently use the ATD1 a lot for riding with the bike. I love the Velomacchi as well if I am on the bike, but it is not as versatile of the bike. The ATD1 is awesome for both worlds.

Hey Maksim!
The TAD was in my consideration as well back then. But I wasn't sure if my Powerbook 15" would have fit. So I went with the 5.11
Fantastic production. Subscribed.
I got one today! I’m excited about the versatility of the pack.
Hey Bo, any chance you'd be able to get your hands on and review a Ridgemont Ranger backpack? They're on preorder right now but you might be able to get them to send you one now for a review
I haven't heard of them. I need to google it ;-)
I carry military back pack (5.11 Rush 72) during college days and work. It has lots of pockets for organization. But it's quite heavy
With 2.0 you can use the ccw compartment as a nice n easy water bottle holder thatll easily swallo 32 oz and still leave usable admin pouch (as long as you load the admin pouch "vertically".
I love that finally i found a review that shows this pack as a "normal" EDC bag :)
P.S my pack has the same red strings to soften the look :D
Thanks for watching and commenting, Pascale
I saw this review and bought it. Thanks! No regret :)
Great video! Just got myself my own Rush 24 bag for work and going to the gym. Did you put on those red zipper pulls yourself? Are those 5.11 brand?
I've had this backpack for years now and I don't find it very EDC friendly because of the wide padded shoulder straps. But it is good and comfy though on long hikes when you don't need to take it off as often. And you are right on the aggressive looking part. And I'm way over my "tacticool" days now.haha
Yes, the beefy shoulderstraps are a bit "overwhelming" in a day to day scenario especially if you need to dress up for a meeting haha.
I feel like, if 5.11 made a V2 of this with a 15inch laptop compartment, then its pretty much perfect.
thanks for the grim lock idea on the sides.
Happy to help 😉✌️
I live my rush packs , the rush 12 is also my edc I did add a few maxpedition pouches and the 511 water carrier
I wish the bag wasn't so "molle-ed up". I don't want to look like a commando when I go to the office. I don't plan to attach a Ka-Bar Marine Fighting Knife to the outside.
Go with Vanquest or Vertx for better options with less or no tactical look.
I love it! I use it every day, but I’m military so I don’t mind the look. Haha. But I do recommend this over the issued assault pack.
Agreed. It's a great bag 😉✌️
i find "siamese silk clips" to be able to compress the bag more tightly compared to a grimlock clip :D
WOW! Those are awesome. I haven't seen those before. Thank you very much!
Where do you get those?
I like this backpack and want to buy it.Should i get black, grey or OD green?
Subbed 👍
First of all, thanks for the sub 😊 I personally would go with black because it is a more stealthy look.
@@Youknowthebo thanks mate,i was leaning towards black for that reason too.
The only downside, as you mentioned, is that the design screams "military" LOL. That's why I use carabiner, pen, and "camera/photographer" patch to make it like a hiking bag , to make it more "civilian"🤣
haha, good idea!
the new 5.11 rush 12 2.0 is ideal for an edc bag now
Thanks for the info. I wasn't aware that there is a new 2.0 version
Would you reccomend this bag for the gym or for taking to the beach? I have a Nomatic Travel Pack that I use everyday, but not for the gym, neither if I want to go to the beach, so for those I m left with cheap options that are getting really old and just failing in being functional...
Great review man 👍🏽
Would the bag’s capacity enough to accommodate some gym sneaker, spare clothes and school stuffs at the same time?
What zipper pulls do you use? I love the red on black look!
You can check out this video on how I made them ua-cam.com/video/S1AceZwFVJM/v-deo.html
Like the look. I just wish that the hydration pack compartment was able to double as laptop compartment
I believe you can fit a small 13" laptop into the hydration compartment, but I don't have one to test it out
This is very tempting or should I do Rush 24?
Love the subtle modifications you did on the bag.👍
Thanks 😉✌️
I have all the 5.11 packs!!! Are you in Germany?
Can’t wait to buy a patch, so hurry up and sell them! Thanks for the vid.
Hi Bo. What is the name of the orange pouch? I carry the rush12 and love it, it’s my go to bag.
Hello Wendy. That's my extended EDC inside a Trakke pouch. Check this video ua-cam.com/video/l29KJ1HDhL0/v-deo.html
Hi Bo , Can you make a review about the Direct Action and a new 511 backpackTactical AMP12™ BACKPACK , thanks !
The Rush was a bit heavy and it’s not even loaded up yet. Didn’t like the yoke system. Went with the GR1 and havnt regret it since.
The GR1 is awesome. Love that bag as well
Where can I find the zipper cords you’re using on the bag?
Looking for these also. Any luck?
Hey you two. Sorry for the late reply. You can check out how I made these custom zipper pulls in this video ua-cam.com/video/S1AceZwFVJM/v-deo.html
How did you unlock the lightning sliders?? I also have a black backpack and the zippers blend in with the backpack. I want to change the zipper sliders from black to gray
how did you change the zipper cord with the 511 zip pull still on it?
You can pry out the tip of the plastic pull. The part were you can see the seam
Wow...my first bag was the rush 24!!!
That's awesome. The Rush24 was just too big for my size though.
I use it as my crossfit bag and it's great, fits my lifters and kit and is indestructible. Would I wear it to the office? No
I have seen many people using this to work out. Good choice for that.
Could I please ask where to find those red cords? The official version of the backpack doesn't have them.
I made them myself. Here is my Tutorial ua-cam.com/video/S1AceZwFVJM/v-deo.html
I am very interested for your morale patch, though a bit late, may I still purchase it from you? Looking forward to hearing from you :)

I would buy this pack in a second if it had a lighter interior.
Come on 5.11
What does this even mean? Lighter interior? As in weight? How could the weight affect the inside of a bag. Color? Buy the sandstone color
The rush series is awesome. You can watch how I modded my zippers in this video ua-cam.com/video/S1AceZwFVJM/v-deo.html
@@Youknowthebo thx a lot bro, excellent tutorial to me 😊👍🏻
I really love my recycled firefighter bag which has a padded laptop compartment. I just wish it had molle loops on the inside to customize. Molle inserts are $90 which is too much.
That bag has been on my wishlist for quite a while
I'm 174cm and 55kg(thin af). do you think that the rush 24 would be too big for me?
The drawstring pouch in the main compartment is the laptop compartment.
This is good for EDC and for travel but a tad too tacticool for business attire. I am using Greenroom136 Rainmaker and Goruck 26L both black in colour
i actually considered getting this, but i find it too tacticool too, ended up with a gr0
I thought the same, which is why I switched to the GR0 (The bag that started this channel)
That's an awesome bag collection!
I carry a miltec large assault backpack for work or edc environment.. cheap and reliable
Thanks!
Hey Mike,
Yes, I currently use the ATD1 a lot for riding with the bike. I love the Velomacchi as well if I am on the bike, but it is not as versatile of the bike. The ATD1 is awesome for both worlds.
I always carry a similar backpack. It's a 36 L Mil Tec backpack.
Hey Bo, have always wondered what water bottle you’ve been rocking...
That's an isolated bottle from Amazon. I'm not too happy with it. It's ok, but I'm still searching for a great one.
