The self defence flashlight tip is great. Avoiding a fight is an absolute must (even at home - I'm in Japan and would 100% not get the benefit of a doubt over a citizen) and that's an item nobody could misinterpret as a weapon. Passport is the one thing that always stays on me, in the most discreet pocket I can manage. BTW Japan has improved leaps and bounds concerning cashless payment (especially during the pandemic), I barely carry cash anymore. You already have a Suica card, it'll cover quite a bit, as well as touchless Visa cards and Apple Pay/Google Pay.
3 - Looks to be the most spacious. Personally, if I were carrying a sling already, I would want the largest one in a certain size range. I'd rather have the extra space and not need it then otherwise. Hope you enjoy your trips and share whatever stories and adventures you can, Happy New Year!
Last tip is a white noise sleep machine. White noise will completely drown out noisy hotel neighbors and hallways. All my years of travel never had to deal with noise keeping me awake.
The Bellroy Travel Wallet is 160 dollars, the Bellroy Note Sleeve is 90 dollars, the Travelers journal set up with clip and two pens is over 200 dollars, the Airpods are 200 dollars, the Iphone is 600 dollars and that clip is probably like 40 dollars, the flashlights are over 200 dollars together. In total if you were to replicate this set up with these exact products its easily going to cost you around 1600 dollars. This is absolutely luxury. But yeah, I guess since he has a one dollar binder clip it was enough to make you think it wasn't.
Have spent 8 of last 32 years on travel for work. A lot of good advice here, one thing missing is the fake wallet. Real wallet goes front pocket of pants. Second wallet contains several 1,000 Mexican peso bills, Greek drachma bills and even some French franc bill, along with a couple of old hotel key cards and several of those fake credit card you used to get in the mail when they tried to get you to sign up. It also hold the evenings bar cash. This one goes in the back pocket and is used in public; for any pickpocket eying you it seems like a good target. Passport also goes in front pocket in a Ziplock bag. Also have a travel laptop, has never been in contact with work or personal computers. Files I need for travel go on to a thumb drive get loaded on to the travel laptop and then thrown away, one use only. Anything I need to download get printed out when get back on a stand alone printer that only knows the travel laptop and then scanned/OCR on work scanner. Separate travel phone with travel WeChat account, separate travel email address. Spent over 2 years total in China and can't remember the last time my safe wasn't gone through.
New subscriber here. I actually don’t even like travelling, but as an ADHDer that easily get overstimulated and anxty it is crucial for me to try and identify what EDC gears to bring a long in my everyday commute just going to and from work. Another tip to carry (maybe in carry on bag) is a small night light. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve banged my self up bumping into furniture in the dark trying to use the bathroom in an unfamiliar hotel room. Night light helps so much.
Great set of items! I also always have a current international drivers license, however I’m yet to encounter a rental place that actually wants to see it 😅 „Most people are good“ is also one of the best things to bring to a travel destination. I firmly believe that this believe and some common sense has kept me/us safe, but also curious on a lot of individual travel adventures. Have a great trip!
I also believe most people are good, but also keep in mind that I'm more vulnerable when I'm travelling. Definitely use your common sense, and listen to your gut. If something feels off, it probably is!
As a frequent business traveller, the tips and insight provided were absolute gold, thank you Maurice. as for voting, either which one is voted on a the winner, more than sure you will make it work

Incredible video without any unnecessary info! I really appreciate the tips, especially about the flashlight since I've felt uneasy travelling solo in the past and even though nothing truly dangerous has ever happened to me a flashlight the way you describe it would give me peace of mind. Also, I like the way sling 2 looks the most!
The small pen in my Bellroy travel wallet (great wallet!!!) has been picked up recently in security screenings at 2 airports within the last 6 months, requiring a full search of my carry-on backpack. Before that, not a single problem 10 years of using the wallet. So, my advice is to remove the small pen from the wallet.
New subscriber. I don’t travel nearly as much as you do, but I’m happy to see that a seasoned traveller like yourself follows a similar organizational methodology/philosophy as I have been using the past few years. Looking forward to more great content 👍
The most key part of my travel kit, which I use for EDC as well, is a little shoulder bag that goes around my neck/shoulder and sits directly below one arm. All of my essentials (including passport) are kept in it, and it's roomy. I can wear a jacket over it, and it's completely protected. I take it everywhere I go and never leave it behind, or take it off. It's always directly under my arm and jacket. Because of how the strap wraps around too, it's hard to steal as the strap will get tangled with my clothes.
You are SO right about hotel safes, Maurice. Not only do staff know the universal code that opens all their safes, but so do former employees and friends of employees who tell their other friends. Often the universal codes are brilliant, like 1234 or 0000. All the safes do is make it easier for thieves to find all your valuables at once. Fast in, fast out, hit the next room. Efficient crime is the best crime, is it not?
I'd say 2, as I personally find it the most useful. I would also say it is one of the better looking ones, so I believe it is the best choice. Have a nice trip and happy new year!🎉
New to your channel and very much appreciate your level of precision - by this I mean things like when explaining the curtain / money clip idea you showed a circle and specified you were talking the other side of the window - you don't leave anything to chance / misunderstanding. Also leave copy of your identity documents and travel insurance at home with a trusted loved one. I also carry my photocopy of passport page and driver's licence in my day pack and my real documents in my hotel safe. Happy travelling from Australia 🎊
I never leave my passport, cash, or cards in a hotel room. Not even in Japan. My travel EDC bag is the Pacsafe Metrosafe LS250. I always carry a Ricoh GRIII camera plus spare battery and SD cards. This bag has unmatched multiple security features.

My only problem with the choice of flashlight is the obviously "tactical" aspect of it. I carry a similar light daily (Fenix PD36 TAC), but if I were bringing it with me on a trip, it has to go in the checked luggage. This is because TSA may see it as a weapon, since it has an impact bezel. This is an issue for me since I am a big believer in traveling as light as possible and avoiding checked luggage, but something like that Nitecore T4K may bypass the "tactical" appearance just a bit and be a more viable option for me. I prefer a light with an instant on strobe, though.
Maurice, you are making amazing videos! Glad seeing this video's views exploding and bringing you the well deserved attention! Can't wait for new videos to drop! Keep it up man!
The time that my entire family could not enter Antigua because we could not find a working pen either on ourselves or in the airport. My MIL picked us up at the airport and could see us stuck in limbo for like 40 minutes while we searched for a pen. SMH....I experienced the worst case scenario, I lost my passport while abroad. I was pretty sure it wasn't stolen so I was able to retrace my steps and realized I left it at a bank while cashing travelers checks. The bank had forwarded it to the police station but I wasn't allowed into the central police station (it was Ireland during "The Troubles") so I had to find a local cop who could go get it for me. Luckily I found one and after buying him a round at the pub to say "thanks" got my passport back. It took a couple days and meant that a lot of my trip had to be rearranged but ultimately I learned a few things: people are in general way more honest than I gave them credit for and always, always, always double check where my passport is before moving on.
You can also slim it down even more if you add your suica to your Apple wallet. You can add a new one by pressing + in wallet and selecting transit card.
Thanks for covering the flashlights! I normally will travel with four lights, one on my person, one in my carry-on/personal item and two in my checked. I recently was in a cat 5 hurricane and they came in handy!
Personally speaking a flashlight is one of those things that people don't think of when it come to essential gear. I've been advocating for a long time that more women should carry tactical flashlights on them rather than using keys, learning martial arts or any other form of self defense. A good tactical flashlight (at least a 1000 Lumens) with strobing mode from nitecore plus being able to sprint a few hundred feet/meters is good enough to get out of trouble. A lot of assault comes from opportunity rather than planned, so running away just makes it way harder to do anything. I personally carry two, a nightcore thumb for daily edc and the insane TM9K for just about any night activity or day trips.
@@TrumpetGapper ua-cam.com/video/fqu02-6c7Os/v-deo.html Pretty much exactly like this video shows. could easily go for several months. very good. As for the bag/travel sling. I guess I would say the alpaca. The one thing I don't like about it is the strap. The buckle is nice, but I prefer the straps that attach the the bags via D rings. This gives you the opportunity to extend the straps with 2 couple of carabiners on each end. I'm a big person, 6'4" and often the slings that fit some one in the 5'9" range fit more like a noose on me. Happy trails
Happy New Year!🎉 and happy safe travels!! I travel quiet a bit as well but never thought of the curtain trick, thank you!! Trusting us for your edc?!! Awesome! I vote #2

Always love your videos. I vote to Bring #1. I currently gifted it to myself after watching your videos and would love to know how it travels. I use it daily and so far love it. Blessings on your travels.
In a previous life I was out about 40 weeks a year, mainly in the US but often to Europe with short notice and ended up with a really similar system. For flashlights, my personal preference was/is a stream light protac dual fuel. They accept either 123 or AA batteries and really take a beating. Not quite as friendly as a rechargeable light but accepting two types of battery made it easy to keep running anywhere.
My opinions on this stuff Passport wallet - imo is always necessary since it's annoying to keep documents and boarding pass together without it. cellphone accessories - Who doesn't bring cell phone stuff? Wallet - Again who doesn't bring their wallet with them regularly? Drivers license - You should generally bring ID with you at all times. Like what? Flashlight - Dumb. the extra half second you might, keyword here, buy trying to flash a person might be useful but it also might get you killed as you reach for it like its gonna do something. The clip - ain't a bad Idea, I don't trust foreigners in hotels either.
The Olight Warrior Mini 2 is another great torch for getting out of a tricky situation. Configure the tail button so that a hard press activates the strobe - it's a massive button so very easy to operate under stress. Then run like Usain Bolt!
I always carry my passport/cards/cash in a shirt with an internal pocket. No chance of it being stolen unless physically attacked. I would not like to leave it in my hotel room clipped to the curtains. I would always be thinking about it. thanks
I am currently on my 12 day European trip and, on your recommendation, have the Tomtoc EDC sling with me. It's perfect! Especially since it has been raining 🌧 at all my destinations, it fits a small umbrella 🌂 perfectly. I, too, am a kleenex pack enthusiast. I always take extra in my suitcase just in case. I've been a fan of yours for a while now & appreciate the honest & thorough reviews. Keep traveling!!
Here's a pro advice: Don't hide your passport in your hotel room (e.g. clipping it to curtains, hiding it underneath the mattress, etc.). It's much more likely that you'll forget it there, rather than that a theft will occur inside the hotel room. I've seen it happen and we had to drive back for 2h on a dirt road in Uganda because my brilliant travel buddy had left his passport underneath the mattress. Please don't. If you really have to hide it, then hide it inside your luggage or laundry.
I’d recommend a door wedge and whistle if someone tries to get into your hotel room at night. They won’t be able to open your door, even if they have a key, and if they keep trying just blow the whistle and see them run. It came in handy for me when travelling in Africa.
Great video on travel. Another video on tech related items like recommended power banks, hotspots, VPN’s, data storage, cloud backup would be useful. Also I’ve looked for a prior video on how the Bailout became your EDC but haven’t found it?? Happy New Year and safe travels. 👍🏻
I agree with what you said I usually just do a carry on and that is it. If I am gone for along time I just ship my stuff. I try to keep things I can use for multiple things. I never carry a knife ever. I do carry a personal alarm, tactical pen, and tactical small flashlight. I also wear a eco drive citizen watch and lighter.
The Leatherman Style PS multi-tool is an awesome TSA safe option for frequent flyers. It’s basically a Leatherman without the knife. Passes TSA inspection all the time. Highly recommend to add to anyone’s travel EDC.
For the passport bit. Make sure to get a passport card, it will be recognized as the same type of identification in case you lose your passport. You can't fly with it but it is something I keep in my wallet while abroad.

I get pretty inebriated when I travel so I always dummy cord my phone and wallet to myself and found that it really helps. I’m looking for a minimalist passport holder that I can also secure to myself
I fly with an old generation Bose brand noise cancelling head phone, and leave it on through out the long flight. I don't listen to anything, but just use it to cancel out the continuous noise in the plane. I have noticed that I can still hear the announcements clearly when using it. In my opinion this helps reduce the fatigue.
I don't get to travel much but saving this video for if I do! That flashlight self defense is a good point. Best to make a getaway then try and fight some attackers off
These are a great recommendation however the price for all these items are very unrealistic. No one is willing to pay £130 pounds for a flash light just for travel or even basic use. Most of these recommendations just seems like a sponsored ad! not realistic at all

This is the most useful EDC video I've ever seen. Not full of crap or luxury stuff, you're awesome. Thank you!
@@L-Man-Gaming I think they were talking practically. Either way, this is still incredibly indulgent and unnecessary lmao.
My dummy wallet also contains those sample credit cards that they send you in the mail sometimes. When glanced at, they look and feel real.
New subscriber here. I actually don’t even like travelling, but as an ADHDer that easily get overstimulated and anxty it is crucial for me to try and identify what EDC gears to bring a long in my everyday commute just going to and from work. I tend to carry quite a lot ”just in case” so I find your videos extremely helpful! Thank you! I love how concrete, logical and minimal your EDC kits are!
Your recommendations based on experience, plus clear, concise language, and expert editing, make these videos exceptional! Thank you, sir!
Absolutely love the quality and thoughtfulness of your content. The way you deliver it with a calm voice makes it easy to understand and time well spent. Thanks so much, Maurice. I look forward to seeing more of your work. New subscriber.
Another tip to carry (maybe in carry on bag) is a small night light.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve banged my self up bumping into furniture in the dark trying to use the bathroom in an unfamiliar hotel room. Night light helps so much.
Number 1 - give the Tomtoc a whirl!
Great video, thanks Maurice!
Great set of items!
I also always have a current international drivers license, however I’m yet to encounter a rental place that actually wants to see it 😅
„Most people are good“ is also one of the best things to bring to a travel destination.
As a frequent business traveller, the tips and insight provided were absolute gold, thank you Maurice.
as for voting, either which one is voted on a the winner, more than sure you will make it work
I also bring a small pack of baby wipes for the plane and also useful for street food. Also I bring a few zip loc bags to carry misc items and food in my bag
Rare is the man who can still believe in the good of humanity after the sort of things you have experienced, bravo 👍❣️
What is the brand of the shoulder bag you are describing? Thank you.
Great video Maurice... thanks for sharing your well thought out kit!
All the best for 2023 mate. Warm greetings from Australia.
I'd say 2, as I personally find it the most useful. I would also say it is one of the better looking ones, so I believe it is the best choice.
Have a nice trip and happy new year!🎉
I'm very adverse to bringing a lot of gear with me when traveling, but that TK4 flashlight looks like a great addition. Thanks!
Go with the #1, lower cost yet very functional. All black interior is not an issue as my phone or flashlight is always there.
New to your channel and very much appreciate your level of precision - by this I mean things like when explaining the curtain / money clip idea you showed a circle and specified you were talking the other side of the window - you don't leave anything to chance / misunderstanding. I'm willing to bet some people think you are a little too precise, but I do appreciate it!
As a watch geek, I love how you swapped from SKX007 to your 5KX GMT in travel mode lol. Perfect!
Pacsafe
The flashlight tip is such a BRILLIANT idea!!!
but everything is brand new?? you never used it...!
I have so much respect for you Maurice, your channel is one of the very few reasons I use UA-cam.
3 - I used it for my trip to Iceland in August and couldn’t be more pleased with it. Carried all my basics I needed when didn’t want to be packed down.
Man your voice is so soothing. I could listen to you talking for hours on end.
I’ve been successfully traveling with just one pouch this past year. I’ve been rocking a simple pouch from alpaka. Fits everything!!! No luggage either.
I just found your channel and wanted to tell you I love your content. Can stop watching your videos and curse you because your link to next videos flow so well that instead of watching 15min I fall into hour long rabbit holes.
You can use your phone as a suica card now. Also for Japan, it is very useful to have a small purse for storing coins.
I don’t go anywhere without my Midori travelers notebook!! Nice to see that I’m not the only guy in North America that uses one!! Thank you for your awesome tips.
Checked bag 👎👎👎
@@zane812 share how you’re packing for a 22 day trip without a checked bag. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Pretty much exactly like this video shows. could easily go for several months. Buy stuff locally if you need more or a heavier jacket or dressier shirt etc. I also pack sandals
Exception is if I’m scuba diving I’ll also pack a (carry on) suitcase in addition to the backpack to fit my bcd, regs, fins and mask, etc 👍
This is the first channel ive seen where pretty much everything shown actually makes sense to use. Nice.
I'd like to see if 1 as the most compact option still works well, so that's my vote!
Awesome! I vote #2
Abroad traveler and so glad I came across this video. The T4K is an awesome flashlight! Thanks Maurice! So worth the buy no I regrets! If you’re in the fence with this, don’t be. Pick it up, you won’t regret it.
Always love your videos. I vote to Bring #1. I currently gifted it to myself after watching your videos and would love to know how it travels. I use it daily and so far love it. Blessings on your travels.
The most underrated EDC channel on UA-cam!
My opinions on this stuff
Passport wallet - imo is always necessary since it's annoying to keep documents and boarding pass together without it.
cellphone accessories - Who doesn't bring cell phone stuff?
Wallet - Again who doesn't bring their wallet with them regularly?
Drivers license - You should generally bring ID with you at all times. Like what?
Flashlight - Dumb. the extra half second you might, keyword here, buy trying to flash a person might be useful but it also might get you killed as you reach for it like its gonna do something.
The clip - ain't a bad Idea, I don't trust foreigners in hotels either.
My vote goes to #2 . I tend to pack light, but sometimes I get overwhelmed and want to fit everything into one bag.
The Olight Warrior Mini 2 is another great torch for getting out of a tricky situation. Configure the tail button so that a hard press activates the strobe - it's a massive button so very easy to operate under stress. Then run like Usain Bolt!
In Japan you are legally required to carry official ID (passport for tourists) at all time.
Love this video, not just for the EDC, but for the travel tips. A+
I always carry my passport/cards/cash in a shirt with an internal pocket.
Very good point
I love the PS, but be aware that, while it is TSA-friendly, some countries won't let you travel with pliers.
I found this channel recently and love the narrative full of logic and pragmatism. Congratulations! Deserved the subscription and bell! =)
A very interesting video and I love that binder clip tip! I'm going to vote for sling #2 as I like the aesthetics of it.
#2 Hands down. AER has the best organization, and is smart looking too :) Enjoy your trip!
For the passport bit. Make sure to get a passport card, it will be recognized as the same type of identification in case you lose your passport. You can't fly with it but it is something I keep in my wallet while abroad.
The card is only good in North America, Caribbean. Isn’t good anywhere else
@@marlinchen6315 happened to me this summer. Didn’t do anything more than a photocopy to get my emergency passport. Still had to fill out all paperwork, passport picture, fee, everything. Made no difference at all.
@@marlinchen6315 luckily they had a passport picture kiosk at the Milan office I had to go to. What it helps is to have that lost passport’s number so they can look up your prior one. But you still have to do everything all over again. Took several hours but was thankful it could be done same day!
I've watched this at least three time since release and the passport and clip gets me every time. Such and easy trick. I know I'd forget it there and end up missing my flight 😆
As a FedEx Pilot I would add the clip also works on curtains to help black out the room for better sleep!
Binder clips are also just very helpful in keeping curtains closed for privacy
Do #1. I just bought the Timtoc on your recommendation, so I would love to hear more about how it works for you.
Watched your 3 travel slings video and my vote goes for #2 because it looks like it expands the most to shove more into haha... awesome vid here by the way
I get pretty inebriated when I travel so I always dummy cord my phone and wallet to myself and found that it really helps. I’m looking for a minimalist passport holder that I can also secure to myself
wow that is smart and very useful advice
Very helpful video. I'd never considered carrying two flashlights, but now I will. I vote #3.
Thanks for the wallet stash tip!!! I never feel safe leaving my passport or backup cash in the room safe for the same reason. BTW ... use bag #1
My vote is for bag #3 They all look useful and I enjoy the videos.
Pro tip: Maurice carries a Canadian passport so he doesn't get hassled at airports around the world lol
8:20 I can guarantee you, you will forgot your passport if you do so, 100%
I don't get to travel much but saving this video for if I do! That flashlight self defense is a good point. Best to make a getaway then try and fight some attackers off
Somehow, I survived 50+ years on this earth without carrying a knife.
OMG you made my day :D I thought only Czech republic has this hilarious international driver's licence booklet :D feel a sense of relief! :D
These are a great recommendation however the price for all these items are very unrealistic. No one is willing to pay £130 pounds for a flash light just for travel or even basic use. Most of these recommendations just seems like a sponsored ad! not realistic at all
