Amazing video, coach! I feel the heavybag creates that "casual transition" bad habit you mentioned at 1:32. This reminds me of a drill I learned at CSA Gym in Dublin, California -- you and a partner "spar" without any strikes. Imagine you are repelling magnets, trying keep your distance apart always the same. Great way to work on those quick, precise steps and angles.
+fightTIPS sounds like a really cool drill, CSA knows their stuff!
You two should have a match
Precision Boxing I'm an upcoming boxer I would say my style is that of a Cuban school very Guillermo rigondeaux like..im right handed I move well..but I've heard some tell me u need to be lighter on your feet..what could I be needing I've had 2 amateur fights and won them both..
Norid Rad -- Do you use a skip rope yet? Classic boxer's training for staying light on your feet :)
Fight tips beat me too it, an important detail about footwork practice that is often overlooked. I use this drill for my boxers as part of the warm up rounds before free sparring, say for a pure 1 hour sparring session, typically after warm up and shadow, this drill for a round, then tag sparring for a round, then jab only, lead hand only etc before building into the free sparring rounds, i find this helps the boxers get into the 'technical' zone which leads to constructive sparring as opposed to destructive sparring
So many memories from listening to you. Not many trainers teach feet the way should. Well put sir
Best boxing channel for me. Better than Fight Tips from a boxing stand point
65akk it definetly explains stuff better
Fight Tips are like the really nice canapes that give you some variety but this stuff is the main course.
crazypizza
Yes, well said
fighttips is an all round channel not boxing singular mate so bad comparison
RECREANT
If you read my comment properly I said "from a boxing stand point"
I think you are brilliant, thanks very much, my son won his second fight convincingly, partly due to great trainers here in London, England but also partly due to your informative videos
Thank you so much for this. I've been sparring with my brother from another mother and he recommended this Phenomenal footage to me.
This video is a million dollar advice. Perfect point. This type of the footwork is what makes you spend less energy getting to the target and what saves you from hard punches in the exchange. Not understanding it or not doing it properly will get you missing , not landing a thing, eating off what you could have avoided. If you know it, you feel more relaxed and this "adjustment" steps and slide help you to stay longer on target and to feel more confident. In fact a lot of questions here under different videos about how not to get hit and attack- they are directly related to the footwork.
Simple thing - a classical 3. One adjustment, jab, right straight/cross and a little slide to the left and the left hook - and you get off the counterpunch and sting into the opening, behind the glove as you are more to the left.
I found it very useful to practice footwork on something with more friction than canvas/typical boxing gym floor. Such precise footwork requires precision but also good conditioning. Learning to do it on a gym carpet makes you start your moves harder. Thus when you do it on a normal surface you are flying. Just had tp make sure to do it on normal surface too otherwise you will overwork your moves and overslide/overrotate/overstep. But once you combine both types of surface for your shadow boxing it may boost your speed.
The same for rope training. Skipping it on a rubberized surface that absorbs your energy pushes you to work harder and then doing the same on a usual surface is much easier.
This is very interesting.
You mentioned fencing. And the footwork you showed at the end is very similar indeed to fencing.
I fenced for 7 years and took up taekwondo afterwards. What I found was that a lot of the footwork from fencing transitions well to taekwondo.
The stance allows for quick adjustments backwards and forwards. Lyoto Machida is a good example for this type of footwork.
I love seeing how there is a lot of similar techniques even though the martial art is completely different. Makes me think that there are som universal rules for movement, no matter the style.
Thank you :-)
nice comment
You are seriously one of the best of the best boxing coaches out there! Doing my homework and will apply transitionary footwork in my training. Thank you!
+JuJu Michelle thank you JuJu
been in martial arts for 30 yrs...your smarter than a boxer brotha...youre a true fighter..regardless if u dont know other styles youre an asset to all.
+Jack Geren thank you Jack
Boxers aren't lesser mate.
+Chance not really. He said "if you don't know other styles" implying he considers boxing a martial arts style. So I really see no aggression in the comment.
Jack Boxing is the epitome of fighting... Martial arts is phony. MMA is fighting but lesser skill than boxing
I think he means that his martial arts knowledge transcends just boxing technique... not to say that boxing isn’t any better or worse than others
Super advice
The essence of solid boxing
I wish you were my coach. Straight to the point & simple methods. Much love for the channel brother 🥊
Hell of a coach!!
Lomachenco does this alot coach.
Your movement reminded me a lot of Loma..
I'm so thankful that I found your channel
I'm your average joy no background in boxing skills. After watching random videos, I chose to subscribe to your channel because you gave so much detailed information in 3 minutes.
man... yes to all three in the beginning.
Thank you Professor! I may lecture @ time 3rd year Law Students in Criminal Procedure, & train Boxers, but after viewing this video for the first time, I most certainly will use your videos for myself & especially for my student. I can't wait to show your amazing footwork to all my Law Students!!! I can't wait to see their faces. Before each lecture, for the first 5 minutes or so, I talk about Science, World events, & even practice on my comedic routine with them. Now, I'll include your videos to the entire class of 120 students. How will I tie in this video, & others that you now have? Training alone, roadwork, & your techniques in boxing will be my analogies to Studying LAW! Just like a Boxer preparing for a fight, they too have to prepare for 1 exam that covers 36 weeks of Law Lectures. Fact: From those 120 students, only about 100 will graduate Law School. To my Gym Fighters, your videos will now be assigned homework... Respectfully written, Santiago Murillo, Esq.
Thanks for going over the little things Coach!
It's subtle details that make difference between being good yo being great!
Always great content from you 💪
WOW great advice JT...again! Yeah I will do what you suggested and take a round with nothing but footwork, back forth, cutting angles, etc. Thank you again.
Great advice - I learned it early and used it because I was scared, over time it became less about being scarred but more about respecting my sparring partners ability
Congratulacion Teacher!!!! Thanks!!!!
...you shoulda been Ronda rouseys boxing Coach- she'd still be undefeated today!
totally agree with your comments. this guy is amazing
Ronda Rouse's boxing skill is zero man
her boxing isnt 0, but nowhere near the level of strikers in the UFC. Her mistake was relying on it, she should've stuck to judo and wrestling for her fighting style.
He's better than 90% of local boxing coaches. Salute!
I did this a lot but didn't see this training from others... Thought I was doing something wrong! Been Boxing 5 years but only had one fight. It was all an art for me.
This is why we love you bro, great vid
Spot on advice mate
God that footwork is like a perfect dance when he's on the roof. Beautiful.
Thanks coach . Keep going ♥
Guys, pro tip, check out kali footwork and pekiti tirsia footwork!
This is a great video. His points are spot on. I did HEMA(fencing) for years and it made my boxing much better.
guitardaddy6 boxing comes from fencing the footwork is similar
Thank you!
Yes, indeed.
Excellent video. And you're right it is very taxing.
Love you coach
Thank you so much sir from India.
Thanks coach needed this video I'm a heavy weight so it's hard to get my big ass cinder block feet up and moving
I also have trouble "sitting down" on my punches and remembering to bend my knees
Spreading your legs a bit more helped for me. Instead of a narrow distance between your feet. Easier to slip and duck as well as foot control. I usually put more weight on the lead leg. Got the trick by watching Gervonta davis
All of which sucks as I primarily train kickboxing and the stance is literally the opposite with that
Branden Thomas I'm a heavy weight as well but what really helped me is his video "4 way slip line" CHECK IT OUT
Branden Thomas There’s a Russian guy on UA-cam that shows how to do that
@@XDKX101 good advice, also very true about kickboxing, that was a hurdle of mine when I made the transition to pure boxing
Thanks coach.. love your videos.
You're moves are graceful
Thank you truly
Thank you sir
Great video!
Thank You for the Video .
JT. Great series of videos. I found your channel months ago and have been taking your advice. I've seen good progress in my technique and some of my coaches and training partners say the same thing... I find your vids practical and easy to listen to. thanks.
Thanks for amazing video and tips, coach!
Thank you for this.
Thanks coach I follow all your videos
Brilliant!
like always you have the best videos, thank you so mucho
Pablo from Chile
Awesome, thank you
I am a simple man. I see a video by JTVan i like.
Great boxing video!
Thanks for the tip!!!
Actually Lomachenko has the best foot work of all boxers
Nah he does a lot of wasted movements and gets to a and b very dramatically
@@Hitogamii_ i agree and disagree cuz it might be on purpose to get people to throw when he is near them and yeah it works.
Yo this is just what I needed thanks coach!! My footwork was trash before watching this vid
I always add this to my workout and it definately helps a lot, thanks for posting! =D
Great one!
Another superb video
nice man this is something ive been working on ever since i had a sparring session with a very tall friend i couldn't land my lead left due to my distance control and his reach and that's when i realised i need to work on quick swift footwork to get in quick and out aswell so yeah this just reminds me about it.
Love this video straight facts
it helps me a lot in my daily street fighting, look; they fallen to my smooth fluidly movements.
Love the video concept! Nice shoes/gloves combo!
Good stuff.
Great video, I definitely will work on this.
Helpful thanks man
Great job and cool looking shoes !
Have you competed before? You move like a top flight pro, so slick/fast/ and efficient.
Thank you for this vid. i learn a lot.
your videos are great. I did amature Muay Thai but I wanna get into some boxing n maybe have an amature fight some time. these are great instructional videos!
Great video.what you say can be adapted to various style...kickboxing,muay thai, etc, but especially to mma fighter who have a huge lack of good. footwoork
Hi JT,
I went back to sparring 2 weeks ago and this video is exactly what I have implemented into my shadow sparring, but its fatiguing af! Im glad to watch this right now, good timing.
Also would you do a video on different ways to train your distance and timing please.
After back to sparring my distance and timing was terrible, I understand I have ring rust but It got me thinking to if there is a way to train for keeping/ controlling the right distance and getting my timing better.
Very helpful
really great vid tip much appreciated
Coming from point style TKD, this is the kind of stuff we did a lot
Freakin good content.
Definitely what I needed need to practice it cus it is taxing
I say you can tell a true fighter just by his footwork.
If you are a fighter, you must not only understand how to do it but how to read what your opponent's footwork will telegraph.
Anyone can flash moves, get in some martial arts stance.
But when I see someone being able to pivot on a dime without a shift in their body weight, their shoulders and elbows always aligned for angles even when, for this example, stocking store shelves, you can tell they are a fighter you need to respect.
Footwork is critical to any fighter of any field.
What I do as a drill for this is to do this together with a partner. We face off in boxing stance and one partner is "leading the dance" first and controlls where he wants to go (left, right, forward, backward) . All you need to do is react according to his steps and keep the distance the same. After 1 minute we switch.
What do you think about this drill? I feel its a little bit more visual in what you want to achieve in the end.
This guy looks like nate diaz if he is older and bald
prime JT heems Diaz
Nate Díaz is fugly. Don’t compare JT to him.
He ain't so fugly he don't have a profile pic tho
No they dun look nothing alike. Tend to confuse Nate with Nick though lol.
This guy ja-rules. Excellent videos
Being only 114 as a kid
I used a smaller25 pound bag that was constantly rocking back and forth unlike the heavier bag.
that's great!!!!!!!!
your right .. I tend to be a bit to casual I step in rang n step out so I don't think about a person closing distant bc of my fast anticipated foot movement to get me out the way short shifts tax u a lot..
Do you have the link for the precision striking footwork vídeo? I tried but didn't find. Please, If It is possible, always put references to you website on the description. Thanks and regards from Brazil, man!
Beautiful
Been watching some of your videos, but this one, this one really caught my eye. What's the brand of that orange shoes you're wearing? ^^, Please please reply. Thanks in advance!
Right above this was a Wilder video
It'd be great if u could to a video on how to get better striking power and endurance please
Also love ur channel
Hi man great vid. What shoes are you wearing when you're training on thar roof?
Good video
I’ve learnt soo much from your channel, awesome content - Gucci gang
Bruce Lee said footwork, footwork and more footwork
Would you recommend to include these exercises with stance changes? Shifting from orthodox and back and forth, to keep your opponent guessing? Or would this just leave you too open to strikes? Thanks for your input.
Yes you should experiment and keep an open mind
Nice
korean backdash, got it
Hope aj is takin notes
Can you please do a short instructional video on why Gym Owner's MUST and are obligated to have functional sparring not dysfunctional. If Gym Owner's New how much money they loose from customer's, due to feeding them to the lion's they'd think twice. I truly believe Gym Owner's unintentionally become numb to individuals learning and comfort zones...?🥊
What kind of camera do you use? Great quality!
+Reuben Lee Lumix G7, I just got it
Nice! Keep up the good content! Long time subscriber!
damn those are sick shoes
Hey man I know you have a lot of comments and I am not sure if you look at them but anyway I have a question for you. You are the best source of boxing information that I have other than the coach at the gym. Your videos are good.
So my coach tells me not to jump up and down. I trained myself to stay loose on my feet so I can transition weight as quickly as possible. When I lunge into a jab from jumping I feel much more power from my punch as oppose to if I do not. My coach is telling me that proper for is to "skate" around as oppose to hop. If I have the athleticism to stay jumping could it benefit me in the fight? Or should I just train myself to transition from the balls of my feet? When I punch hard from the balls of my feet it is still powerful, just not all my weight behind it as oppose to if I throw myself into the punch.
topher B27 great question! Hoping for an answer, too.
Surch for ukranian ou russian boxe training videos.many of their olimpics fighters use the jumping.learn the 2ways.you will have more options in the future.the choice of you coach is his vision of boxe.all coachs have their own personal vision of the game.one day you will start fighting based im your own vision of the game.
Thanks for the response man! Do you think I should prioritize my coaches rules or just focus on my own fight style?
topher B27 how old are
You brother
You got a point, but styles make fights, remember ive seen boxers that take short steps and adjust to fighting distance become champions of the world Manny Pac Man ive seen boxers with a lot of latteral movement and really don't take short steps to adjust quickly Roy Jones Jr Macho Camacho the greatest Mohammed Ali they been champions, then you got those that are brawlers no laterall movement, can't say thier taking short steps and adjusting cause thier always moving forward, Mike Tyson Julio Cesar Chavez Ray Mancini, they have been champions, so i go back and styles make good fights you want to know who had a little of all these boxers i mentioned in him, your ready, they don't call him the MARVELOUS!! One. For nothing, Hagler had alot of weapons would box you in different styles would give you diffrent looks how many weapons does Canelo have how many diffrent looks does he give you, he comes at you in a straight line, all night long, one dimensional boxers like that Hagler would knock out in 3rds
I always thought that boxing footwork should be like a fencer small still steps to control distance....i noticed it almost looks as if Mayweather and pac feet slide along the foor and stay in perfect balance there is no bounce ...another boxer who moves well is the old school jersey joe very cat like
What a Beauty
