Amazing video, coach! I feel the heavybag creates that "casual transition" bad habit you mentioned at 1:32. This reminds me of a drill I learned at CSA Gym in Dublin, California -- you and a partner "spar" without any strikes. Imagine you are repelling magnets, trying keep your distance apart always the same. Great way to work on those quick, precise steps and angles.

Fight tips beat me too it, an important detail about footwork practice that is often overlooked. I use this drill for my boxers as part of the warm up rounds before free sparring, say for a pure 1 hour sparring session, typically after warm up and shadow, this drill for a round, then tag sparring for a round, then jab only, lead hand only etc before building into the free sparring rounds, i find this helps the boxers get into the 'technical' zone which leads to constructive sparring as opposed to destructive sparring

This video is a million dollar advice. Perfect point. This type of the footwork is what makes you spend less energy getting to the target and what saves you from hard punches in the exchange. Not understanding it or not doing it properly will get you missing , not landing a thing, eating off what you could have avoided. If you know it, you feel more relaxed and this "adjustment" steps and slide help you to stay longer on target and to feel more confident. In fact a lot of questions here under different videos about how not to get hit and attack- they are directly related to the footwork.
Simple thing - a classical 3. One adjustment, jab, right straight/cross and a little slide to the left and the left hook - and you get off the counterpunch and sting into the opening, behind the glove as you are more to the left.
I found it very useful to practice footwork on something with more friction than canvas/typical boxing gym floor. Such precise footwork requires precision but also good conditioning. Learning to do it on a gym carpet makes you start your moves harder. Thus when you do it on a normal surface you are flying. Just had tp make sure to do it on normal surface too otherwise you will overwork your moves and overslide/overrotate/overstep. But once you combine both types of surface for your shadow boxing it may boost your speed.
The same for rope training. Skipping it on a rubberized surface that absorbs your energy pushes you to work harder and then doing the same on a usual surface is much easier.

    This is very interesting.
You mentioned fencing. And the footwork you showed at the end is very similar indeed to fencing.
I fenced for 7 years and took up taekwondo afterwards. What I found was that a lot of the footwork from fencing transitions well to taekwondo.
The stance allows for quick adjustments backwards and forwards. Lyoto Machida is a good example for this type of footwork.
I love seeing how there is a lot of similar techniques even though the martial art is completely different. Makes me think that there are som universal rules for movement, no matter the style.
    Thank you :-)

Thank you Professor! I may lecture @ time 3rd year Law Students in Criminal Procedure, & train Boxers, but after viewing this video for the first time, I most certainly will use your videos for myself & especially for my student. I can't wait to show your amazing footwork to all my Law Students!!! I can't wait to see their faces. Before each lecture, for the first 5 minutes or so, I talk about Science, World events, & even practice on my comedic routine with them. Now, I'll include your videos to the entire class of 120 students. How will I tie in this video, & others that you now have? Training alone, roadwork, & your techniques in boxing will be my analogies to Studying LAW! Just like a Boxer preparing for a fight, they too have to prepare for 1 exam that covers 36 weeks of Law Lectures. Fact: From those 120 students, only about 100 will graduate Law School. To my Gym Fighters, your videos will now be assigned homework... Respectfully written, Santiago Murillo, Esq.

I say you can tell a true fighter just by his footwork.
If you are a fighter, you must not only understand how to do it but how to read what your opponent's footwork will telegraph.
Anyone can flash moves, get in some martial arts stance.
But when I see someone being able to pivot on a dime without a shift in their body weight, their shoulders and elbows always aligned for angles even when, for this example, stocking store shelves, you can tell they are a fighter you need to respect.
Footwork is critical to any fighter of any field.

  • @raceIceman

What I do as a drill for this is to do this together with a partner. We face off in boxing stance and one partner is "leading the dance" first and controlls where he wants to go (left, right, forward, backward) . All you need to do is react according to his steps and keep the distance the same. After 1 minute we switch.
What do you think about this drill? I feel its a little bit more visual in what you want to achieve in the end.

Hey man I know you have a lot of comments and I am not sure if you look at them but anyway I have a question for you. You are the best source of boxing information that I have other than the coach at the gym. Your videos are good.
So my coach tells me not to jump up and down. I trained myself to stay loose on my feet so I can transition weight as quickly as possible. When I lunge into a jab from jumping I feel much more power from my punch as oppose to if I do not. My coach is telling me that proper for is to "skate" around as oppose to hop. If I have the athleticism to stay jumping could it benefit me in the fight? Or should I just train myself to transition from the balls of my feet? When I punch hard from the balls of my feet it is still powerful, just not all my weight behind it as oppose to if I throw myself into the punch.

Surch for ukranian ou russian boxe training videos.many of their olimpics fighters use the jumping.learn the 2ways.you will have more options in the future.the choice of you coach is his vision of boxe.all coachs have their own personal vision of the game.one day you will start fighting based im your own vision of the game.

Thanks for the response man! Do you think I should prioritize my coaches rules or just focus on my own fight style?

You got a point, but styles make fights, remember ive seen boxers that take short steps and adjust to fighting distance become champions of the world Manny Pac Man ive seen boxers with a lot of latteral movement and really don't take short steps to adjust quickly Roy Jones Jr Macho Camacho the greatest Mohammed Ali they been champions, then you got those that are brawlers no laterall movement, can't say thier taking short steps and adjusting cause thier always moving forward, Mike Tyson Julio Cesar Chavez Ray Mancini, they have been champions, so i go back and styles make good fights you want to know who had a little of all these boxers i mentioned in him, your ready, they don't call him the MARVELOUS!! One. For nothing, Hagler had alot of weapons would box you in different styles would give you diffrent looks how many weapons does Canelo have how many diffrent looks does he give you, he comes at you in a straight line, all night long, one dimensional boxers like that Hagler would knock out in 3rds

I always thought that boxing footwork should be like a fencer small still steps to control distance....i noticed it almost looks as if Mayweather and pac feet slide along the foor and stay in perfect balance there is no bounce ...another boxer who moves well is the old school jersey joe very cat like
