Do you remember how the door crackles when you open it? The sound of your own footsteps? The noise your armor makes when you equip it? This music brings everything back so fast...

Honestly what really differentiates Skyrim from Oblivion is Atmosphere; in Skyrim, everyone is "The Dragonborn" - a legend, someone who is destined to defeat Alduin and dragonkind. I remember the first time playing Skyrim killing the first dragon; I had goosebumps at how incredibly awesome an experience it was, I couldn't put down the game for a month at least... However. Soon, I was too strong to lose, even if I wanted to. I know in a fantasy RPG, we all would like to feel empowered, but it just didn't feel complimentary to me...I felt like I was playing a game, with Skyrim. I'd be looking at the variables, I'd be thinking outside the 4th wall mostly. I was never under an illusion this was a game. People repeated the same quotes incessantly; how many of you here in the comment section could rehearse what Adrianna Avenici said, word for word? The adrenaline soon faded, and eventually, I saw the crippling flaw with Skyrim ( And incidentally it's the exact same as what turned me off with Fallout 3 a long time ago ) *It was designed for me to play once at the time and go, "Wow, wee! Look at this, look at that!" there was no 'replayability' persay; in Oblivion, I could waste my life just walking around, talking to people, almost deluding myself that I was really there* I remember having a dozen xbox 360 accounts all full with save slots; I wanted to be a different person, to live a different life, it WAS an Rpg! I didn't feel like I was on some kind of rollercoaster, babysitting me and keeping me entertained, I felt like I was a part of the world I saw and heard...And I lament that we'll never have a game like this again.
+suresren They tried to force a bit of replayability into Skyrim by having the Civil War where you could actually CHOOSE a side... unfortunately it didn't do much except change the guards of a hold, the ruler, and a few lines of dialogue regarding the MAIN story... I actually expected the civil war to play a much larger role than it did, and I was disappointed. Adding to that, the "replay" it added was non-existent. Like you said, Skyrim was a "one time" game. Play the civil war, play it on the other side, realize both sides are the exact same... generic fetch-quests. I felt the same way you did playing Oblivion; being so immersed in the world. I'm not quite sure why, since Skyrim did try hard to immerse as well... I mean in Skyrim whenever you enter a city, you were greeted with some unique scripted event that made it feel like the world was real. Obviously after multiple play-throughs, that has less of an effect and it becomes obvious it was scripted for your arrival, but it was still "unique" and was supposed to make it feel like the world was alive... they also had the "radiant" system where family could replace a dead character as a quest-giver, yet that didn't feel real either. So why did Oblivion feel so "real"? I don't know, honestly. And it bugs me because I WANT to be a videogame developer after I'm done with my studies, yet even I can't figure out how a game with potatoes for characters felt real. Maybe it was all the dialogue? Despite every character sounding the same and talking about the same crap, it just made it feel like people were interacting and not just running a play for when the player arrived.
Absolutely agree. Currently traveling Asia with one single game installed on my stealth - Oblivion. All of these years later the magic is the same. Absolutely brilliant. Would highly recommend a return should anyone be considering it.
Angryboy Well, in Skyrim, you're literally a part of Divine Nepotism; you're special because you were *born* special, you were destined to be Dovahkiin. In other words, you are the ultimate Mary Sue. It has no real meaning because everyone who plays Skyrim is the Dragonborn, whether they're a thief, mage, warrior, or some dude runs around naked punching people. In Oblivion, you're just in a jail cell the Emperor went through, *the world is bigger than you as a player* ( This is a very, *very* important point of *ANY* good RPG ) it still coddled the player a little, and I prefer that it skipped the jail entirely on new character creation, but at the end of the day you were much more of a blank slate - in order to change the world you had to go ahead and do it. Or not, you could just take the opportunity to join the dark brotherhood... The player shouldn't get brownie points for being the player - that's just 4th wall masturbation, they should feel like they're a part of the world around them, otherwise they're never going to truly enjoy being a part of the world because they were always privileged.
lol are you me? This is literally how I felt about skyrim. There was something so magical about Oblivion, I still play it even after playing Skyrim for well over 300 hours.
how can a game make you this nostalgic? THIS game is the only one that makes me feel this way. I mean, how can anyone actually dislike this game? Whenever im feeling down, i just listen to this music and it totally takes me away to the green fields and beautiful towns of cyrodiil and i feel energized again. Man i love this game so much :)
I heard that thieves broke into the Arcane University, the Imperial Legion Compound, and the Temple, all on the same night! wait a minute, let me do that one again
I feel AWFUL for picking this up so late. I got it in 2014, back when I was VERY new to gaming, though my parents would only let me play games rated "E". Nowadays, I'm playing Witcher and Saints Row, but that's besides the point. So, i go into my local Gamestop and I i find a game called Oblivion. It was VERY cheap, like $5. I recognized the Elder Scrolls name, as my friend and 3rd grade teacher (my favorite thus far) played Skyrim. I think to myself, why not get Oblivion. i spent the car ride home staring at awe at the screenshots (remember, the most graphically intense game I could play was madden, which i dropped after playing Oblivion. So, I wait 'till night, and turn on Oblivion. I stared in awe at the intro cutscene, and was terrified of the starter dungeon. The music and the lighting all contributed to a very, very eerie atmosphere. the rest of my tales involve finding the missing painter, exploring Vilverlin 'till I reached the bottom, found the Umbra sword, became a pilgrim of the Nine, and last but not least, *ALL* of Shivering Isles (Are any of you surprised?) i recently grabbed the PC port and I'm having a lot of fun playing around with enhanced graphics, which can really help bring the atmosphere to an even higher level. Now, I do think it is FAR better than Skyrim, as I'm a big fan of RPG's (technically, most games are RPG's, but i mean the skill based character adventure games, like Oblivion or even the earlier games like Daggerfall), and Skyrim, really doesn't feel like an RPG. And that godawful leveling. I didn't like I was becoming a better archer, i felt I just had another bullsh*t perk at my disposal, such as "You do 20% more damage with a bow.. in a game like Oblivion, my damage with a bow would increase as i use bows or get training in them. Though increasing these skill numbers in Oblivion is a little slow. Overall, though, Oblivion is worth a damn; don't let it fade into obscurity
Oblivion and Skyrim both aint RPG.. it has the elements, but we all know it's not.. all enemies scaling with you and the world changes when you gain a level. What's the point leveling up if you will be matched against monsters that will evolve with you at the same time. To me it wasn't important to level up at all.. except for the grinding part to have a lot of gold.. so I had to gain more STR to carry more items. If they weren't lazy they could've made the world of Oblivion more challenging.. you are forced to go for example to very closest city to get quets and you can fight around the city and only easy monsters will be around, but further you go on the map stronger monsters will appear, but if you go back to the 1st town and outside.. the monster would be still @ level 1, but you still would be able to gain experience points from those and after you've gained enough levels than you could go further on the map to explore more. Now that's a true RPG.. this is just a game IMO hack/slash/adventure with many many quests.. But RPG.. not really. It's more a skilltree this way. they should've left it out if they didn't care much for high levels or RPG future and just reward the player with better equipment so that will be your upgrade. Well it's what it is.. If I play Oblivion i'm doing it for the quests alone, but as true rpg lover I will have to play another game like Gothic/Risen 1/ Dragons Dogma
You act like being a nerd is a bad thing! Embrace it, embrace what you are, don't deny it. Being a nerd is a privilege, even if society doesn't see it that way!
Bethesda should definitely do a 10 year anniversary (since it came out in 2006) with TES Oblivion but with updated graphics like Skyrim or even better.... Man that'd be so good.
yes... this is magical and the OST is better than Skyrim. This one is more catchy and you will yearn to go back to play it for the OST alone.. in Skyrim not as much
Why I loved oblivion; it gave a sense of a fulfilled, civil world. The music, the forests, all a little bit of Imperial paradise. In Skyrim, it's beautiful too, but... not in the same way.
This hit with me with so much nostalgia and memories, almost couldn't listen to it. Its weird, game only came out 6 years ago and it feels so distant. The greatest memories are the most depressing.
If im going to be honest this game is the best elder scrolls game. I remember when first playing it, Walking around in the Cave under the prison. I remember when I came out and saw the big Beautiful view of water outside the imperial city. I remember Walking around in the cities, impressed by all of the opportunities the game had. Sometimes I just wish that all of this was real, that you could experience Tamriel for real.
You know, I have the same thoughts about Morrowind, and find myself enjoying Skyrim more than Oblivion. I think its more that having loved your "first" Elder Scrolls so much, you put a lot of faith into the next one. To me, Oblivion just couldn't recapture the magic, not because of its shortcomings, but because of my own expectations. I still loved it of course. Now though, I have come to accept Morrowinds place in history, and I can move on. I think this is why Skyrim is such a joy for me.
enjoying great music does not make you a nerd lol if that was the case every1 in this world is just as nerdy as any of us listening to this enchanting piece of music
Fighters Guild member 1: have you heard of the fighter's guild? Fighters Guild member 2: No. Fighters Guild member 1: goodbye. Fighters Guild member 2: Farewell.
Oblivion was so much more...inspiring than Skyrim, and thats saying something! There was just something that had me coming back and playing it for months and months without it getting old...Maybe it was that feeling of wonder and fantasy that Skyrim just didn't have...Maybe I just liked the Colovian atmosphere more...Or perhaps since Oblivion was my first Elder Scrolls game, it's just my outlook. Nonetheless, the magic will always be with me, and I'll be happy to play it for years to come :)
I fucking love Skyrim and it's definitely my favorite TES, but Oblivion was my first and I'll never forget the feeling of exiting the sewers for the first time.. and seeing that amazing landscape. The realization of being able to walk almost everywhere, just mind blowing.
I know what you mean my friend:) Oblivion was magical for me also. And at that time i had really slow PC, but i was still trying to run Oblivion, atleast at medium settings, because that game, that world and atmosphere was so good, it was like a lucid dream for me:) But Skyrim...with todays technology...oh those litle details everywhere. And with mods i make Skyrim like my own magical world, another dimension where i can live:)
Yes, I myself prefer the orchestra and melody of Oblivion far more :) Skyrim is beautiful too, but it's more ambient, which is fine, imho, I just like this far more! Never the less, Soule is a genius!
I've been let down by so many sequels to various games, but I feel this was a excellent addition to the elder scrolls title, especially after Morrowind which really set the bar IMO. The general census seems to be Skyrim is a great game, but only an average elder scrolls game, and I'd agree with that just based off this music, fucking magical.
people talk so much crap about Oblivion. I believe, in my opinion, it's one of the greatest games ever created. So much to do, stories are interesting, and the music is just amazing. It is hard to top any Elder Scrolls music
Listened to this while creepin on facebook, needless to say i zoned out and ended up just staring blankly into the screen not knowing who or how many peoples facebooks i looked at lol
God I miss this music and game. If they meshed these songs and the ones from morrowind into one game or playlist I would Lick a swingset seat. Thunbs up if you agree!
The days of skipping school to play this, and not caring, during the cold winter ..
Best days of my life
Oh man, I loved it when I didn't go to school and wasn't behind in anything when I came back. Good times...
Yeah, it was good. it wasn't the same with skyrim for me. Maybe because I was older.
Judokkaa Oblivion had this...this Magic. The Soul that skyrim will never have.
me too! haha missed over a week in total faking sick so i could stay home and finish my quests ;p

Oblivion the king of TES games.
Every time I play Oblivion I am transported into a mystical land far far away from the worries of tomorrow and forget the problems of today.
Morrowind is still the best part for me.

that's it, when i have my own place, i'm going to play these music in the background 24/7 just for the atmosphere
Elder Scrolls games have such great music.
What is it, citizen?
Rumors
CoreyLaddo
There's a rumor that you're an idiot.
any truth to that??
They say that the town of Kavatch was attacked.
You have my ear.... GIVE IT BACK DAMNIT!
Why I loved oblivion; it gave a sense of a fulfilled, civil world. The music, the forests, all a little bit of Imperial paradise. In Skyrim, it's beautiful too, but... not in the same way.
I ve never played oblivion... but the ost inspires me
1990Styx why have you not played oblivion yet
I couldn't find better words. You got it so perfectly right.
Glad other people have sentimental feelings towards Elder Scrolls :)
Yes.... Oblivion is their masterpiece.
One my favorite soundtrack I really love this soundtrack The best one ever!!!!!!!!!!
I remember back in the day playing this game on sick days from school, childhood
Playing oblivion at the moment. God the nostalgia.
Oblivion music combined with some Morrowind music - the best ambient background musics and themes every created in history
nice tracks and game,I remember playing it 8 years ago, good memories
Can't wait until elder scrolls online :D
An important message not to be forgotten. Have a nice day :)
enjoying great music does not make you a nerd lol if that was the case every1 in this world is just as nerdy as any of us listening to this enchanting piece of music
you speak the truth ser, not many would say it. You have my vote.
love the flute in there!
Fighters Guild member 1: have you heard of the fighter's guild?
Fighters Guild member 2: No.
Fighters Guild member 1: goodbye.
Fighters Guild member 2: Farewell.
Both genres are very dinstinct, I can't really decide which one is the best, they are the best in their own genre I think ^^
Helps me sleep at night no joke
Ahhh, right in the childhood.
I understand the nostalgia completely, but why fret? PLAY TI AGIAIN and relive the awsomeness!
Best soundtrack Ever
the elder scrolls series got the best soundtracks ever
Best ambietn ever ! more oblivion and skyrim ambience themes please ! : )
You, sir, made my day.
oh, this brings me back
Yes, I myself prefer the orchestra and melody of Oblivion far more :) Skyrim is beautiful too, but it's more ambient, which is fine, imho, I just like this far more! Never the less, Soule is a genius!
I AM IN HEAVEN !!!!!!
No dude you're a freakin' genius!
Nothing could ever top the sound tracks in TES3 Morrowind!
It is hard to top any Elder Scrolls music
i used to walk around in the woods with this music on my ipod and just look at stuff. god, im a nerd.
almost fell asleep on the floor...
Even better when combined with that of Morrowind!
aa those good times :) no worries, just play games
perfect picture for the music. it's pretty much what i think of with this song. hmm maybe a picture of skingrad would be fitting too :D
Sounds like blackwood to me... Always raining :)
Stop! You violated the law!
Man, these feels...do nostalgic :')
Anyway have a nice day! :)
CHEESE... FOR EVERYONE
Yeah! :D
Wait scratch that cheese for no one. That can be just as much of a celebration if you don't like cheese true.
man i love this music
The Lydian mode will always be the “Oblivion Scale” to me
Never too late to play an ES game ;)
This is definitely better music than in Skyrim.
