- Set in Los Angeles, A Backyard in Baldwin Hills follows Etienne, who navigates an unexpected party thrown by a surprise guest and a cast of eccentric characters for his 30th birthday.
This film is a sequel to A Balcony in Brooklyn, a social commentary narrative offering a dystopian look at an underground party during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in NYC.

Hmmm perhaps what the writer was attempting to communicate was that while the pandemic did happen layered with murders of black people and protests; people have social amnesia bc they’d rather be outside and entertained. You can’t fight for a cause alone . Especially when your folks would rather rest their minds from the trauma and give themselves permission to have a good time. Or at least forget for awhile.
This was so complex and interesting... but the way I would have snapped says a lot about my mental health

The last guy made hella points but he still shouldn’t have just invited all them random ass people to his house. I’d have been telling them to get tf out too 🤣
The thing is he used his points and his influence as a rhetorical device so that he doesn’t have to account for being a shitty friend. Using a happy birthday toast so that you can’t respond, to “put you in your place.” And how can you be thankful for your life if people don’t understand you’re coming from? Which has always seemed to be central to black experience in America. But rn it’s definitely a place full of people now who 100% would make you feel lonely at your birthday party.

Was I the only one confused about wtf was going on and why?! 🤔 How did anyone throw a party unbeknownst to ol’ boy when HE was the one at the door checking temperatures and having yoga at the entrance? Did he ever figure out who ordered the speakers at HIS address?? Liiike, what was even the point or intention of the film? I’m CONFUUUSED!! 😩🤣

Lol I “think” it’s bringing up or highlighting all the different personalities, trends and topics that came to light during and post COVID. All our “opinions” are a lot now and has given a voice to everyone and we really don’t know how to interact anymore.
They just did it in a freaky out of nowhere party setting.

I dunno, man. Like everyone trying to tell this dude the pandemic is over and to enjoy everything that was earned through protests and other efforts. I get the second part but like...the pandemic still isn't over. Aren't people still f*cking dying from this sh*t?! My grandparents died not in 2020 but late 2021, and more have been taken since then. Keeps feeling like we learn zero lessons.
Shoot, and he's still right about needing to keep putting in the work towards change! Of course we gotta go out for these protests but why need 100 people most of whom this dude doesn't know to come out for his birthday?! The like ten people he actually knew could've been enough, and he would've been able to actually enjoy his birthday, no?
