After watching a bunch of videos on the OB-4, the only conclusion I can come to is that its main purpose is to give high people something to tinker with.
This feels like the ultimate tool for a music student. You have your metronome, and you can use the looping, sampling, and speed adjustment for transcribing jazz solos that are difficult to do at full speed!
In don’t know bout you, but I hadn’t money for gadgets like this. I think a student would go for a laptop instead for all the things you named. Beautiful device but I when i have inspiration I need a more serious device and if I want to fiddle around I need a smaller device. And For some field experimentation I thing its to expensive to carry around a just cant find a good argument to buy it.
Great review. I took the plunge, I know it's expensive and not for everyone, but I have to say whenever I play it people always comment on the sound quality. And the ambient sounds you can get from it are totally incredible.
Works great as an ambient / drone machine. It has a built in ambient feature which is pretty good but I always use it for background drones. Just slow down any radio broadcast etc. I usually go down to 0.1 x speed.
I’m not an OB-4 hater by any means…I think you can come up with some very interesting textures and glitchy loops/soundscapes, and it’s a really cool idea especially in the realm of “lo-fi”. HOWEVER…just what are you supposed to do with those cool sounds once you’ve created them? No line-out is INSANE and makes this device borderline unusable for producers. Why, Teenage Engineering. Just….WHY?!
@@LiamKillen how do you update an output jack onto the device, though? Lol. I suppose it could maybe be over Bluetooth but I don’t know how that would work in a DAW either
I've had one of these for months now and had no idea it did all of this. I just bought it because it looks cool and sounds good. I also use the chakra aligner chants as my kids' alarm clock.
It definitely seems like a cool device to have to work out samples while just naturally listening to music, just to hear a bit and then immediately hear a sample of it. Seems cool.
I'm sure somebody pointed this out before but regarding the lack of a line out, it's possible there was some legal issue with it being mainly used as a radio, there would be some restriction against giving users the ability to easily record and save the radio stream via line out. That being said, you OP-1 has a radio feature and a line out, the only difference I can think is maybe because radio is the main feature (or one of the main features) of the OB-4 (and it's marketed as a radio), where the OP-1 radio is kind of a background feature and it's marketed as a synth. Just some thoughts, we know TE is not usually like this so there must be a reason.
I would imagine having a line out or USB to get project audio would probably fall under the same thing as just recording music from the radio digitally or on tape, something devices have been able to do for decades. There will also be software updates in the future that will just make the speaker that much more appealing.
would a video about how to produce with headphones be a good idea? i think there are many people out there who don't know how to get their sound right using mostly headphones.
Fun fact: TE made a series called frekvens for IKEA. That's actually how I found out about them in the first place. TE isn't an instrument company by heart, although they have been making them, their main idea is interactive art basically. Something you can actually use and enjoy and also look good. But I guess music was something that nobody was seeing as an art piece that actually makes music, and make music well with it. Also, from what I understand, a lot of their sounds came from Reasons factory synths and I think a few from ableton as well. Jakob Haq programmed the sounds for the pocket operators. He has a youtube channel called haqattaq or something like that. Pretty cool stuff.
@@LiamKillen They were. First time I saw them, I was like, that is the most euro thing I've ever seen. Teenage engineering has some crazy products - talk about “outside the box”
They always think outside the box
@@LiamKillen when I first saw the products I’ll admit I giggled and thought novelty item.. then I played with the po-12 and was blown away! lol d almost kill for the op1- not really but I’d consider selling guitars or pedals I don’t use anymore.. 369 pedals and counting.. lol
Woahhhh keep your guitars- op1 is not a replacement of that. It’s an extension
yeah I dig this
Thx for watching 😊
Easily their most inexplicably overpriced object yet, but it’s also a perfect case for why I’m excited to see anything TE comes up with next, because it’s never going to be what people expect or want them to make. Killer.
Lol yeah so many mixed opinions right?
@@LiamKillen but mixed opinions worth having!
This didn't age too well
@@GreatistheWorld What are you attempting to say here? They are making incredibly dumb products that miss the mark in so many ways. What exactly excites you about this? Lmao
Could you further explain your collaboration details? If I get one of these I'll use your link! I'm about 50/50 mainly due to the price and no line out but I would still be able to make it work in a setup
I don't use it THAT MUCH for actual performance collaboration yet- i'm mostly just using it as an extremely high quality speaker (especially for the size) within my set up. It's nice to go portable and play through an actual speaker that is FKN LOUD if you want it to be.
There will also be software updates in the future that will just make the speaker that much more appealing.
wish they sold covers for the speakers. might have to get a bag tailored for some peace of mind if i buy this one lol.
They do actually!
@@LiamKillen teenage engineering- of course they do lol
re: Loops - tap tempo and manually set 115.3 tempo would be handy!
It so would! Maybe they’ll integrate it somehow.
So, next year they gonna release an OB-6 with a line out (minijack of course), available in more colours, for 1000 monays.
You might be right lol
would a video about how to produce with headphones be a good idea? i think there are many people out there who don't know how to get their sound right using mostly headphones.
I think it's actually easier/clearer to produce with headphones, but you've gotta have the right ones. I use Sennhesier HD 600 s- they're awesome.
@@LiamKillen thanks for the tip, price appears to be reasonable also.
Dang dude that mic is picking up that decent at 30 feet away?
Yup! Quality is great on the OB-4!
Yea! They discontinued those a while back but they sound pretty fkn cool
@@LiamKillen They were. First time I saw them, I was like, that is the most euro thing I've ever seen. I remember seeing swedish house mafia with the op1 and I wondered what it was, looked it up, then it hit me, so I was like, hmm. Checked out more and more of their catalog, and bought the po-33 a couple of years later I think, just to see what it was all about.
WAIT. What's that crazy OP-Z skin?
Got it from Oversynth!
I wonder if the stereo input could be switched to an output, via a firmware update. If that every became the case, I would buy it in a heartbeat!!!
Who knows what’s next i’m sure they’ve got some bonkers updates on the way
Trippy. All I can say.
I feel you there
Hi, what gender of music is the one that's been playing on that speaker?
I think you mean genre? Lofi n chill 😎
@@LiamKillen yes yes, my mistake lol. Thank you! Btw, love your track "No distractions"
@@LiamKillen I think you'd like Ulrich Schnauss music, too.
Is this a good product for a person who just wants to have a cool good Bluetooth speaker?
Yeah that's pretty much the exact demographic. Everyone that sees my OB-4 is instantly interested.
@@LiamKillen Thank you, bought it for a good price of $450
Shame there is no record in for radio and live input recording of your performance jams .
Yeah you’d have to mic it!
Liam Killen wow no line in ? For jamming with your OP 1/Z 😢
This thing is rad! Really wish it had RCA or some sort of other input :(
You could probably find an adaptor for that
I want this thing but I don't need all the quirks
They’re pretty fun ngl
what is the green thing at 12:00?
I think you mean the OP-Z ? If you'd like to find out more about it - my Discord would be a good place to check out: discord.gg/xj8J2xJuBP
You say it’s not sponsored but they sent you the device?
By your logic, every OB-4 video that I ever do is sponsored by Teenage Engineering.
No output is obnoxious
It’s a choice that’s for sure!
Any way around that latency?
Yes! The new update!
they should've set fuck it and put a tape deck in there it would be great
Yeah that woulda been sick.
I guess I'm not the only weird guy, I listen to my music at 0.8 speed all the time! 🥴
Isn't it just the best!?
@@LiamKillen
Yessir!
