i'm a big fan of these. for me the m1 is a small practical headphone excellent for phone calls, facetime, and zoom meetings. a lot better than earbuds or ambient laptop mics. i also occasionally use them in a pinch for doodling, sampling etc. surprisingly pretty well built for such a dainty headphone. i'm pretty sure these were a collaboration with aiaia.
I like these headphones because they sound good, are comfortable, look good, the cable is straight, the microphone is detachable, it also has an inbuilt microphone, and it’s perfectly fine for mixing and mastering as long as you also check your mixes on other speakers and headphones also, which you should be doing anyway. It’s a designer item at a reasonable price.
i bought them for the fact they are compact but they won my heart when me and my brother wanted to watch a show at a public place at night, he connected his none-teenage-engineering headset into my M-1s, and it worked flawlessly.
lol i absolutely sat on mine and broke them. i miss them though. they were great! nice for walking around, and just easier to use than my sony studio monitors. they look cool, weigh nothing, and fit in a jacket pocket.
lol what a fking coincidence. i was looking into teenage engineering products for a couple months now. kind of sucking all videos up about all their products. i ordered a po-33 and i'm super happy with it! i was just wondering about the m-1 headphone quality last evening, since i couldn't find much information about it. thank you for this nice review!
Saw these while i was looking for a small, comfy headset for work. Wanted something good for work and on the go headset with a removable mic. I'd mainly be using it for comms with an xlr female adapter, neat cans.
I could see them working well in scenarios such as performing pop vocals live on stage, or if you're streaming on, say Twitch for example... I don't see how it could be the most practical for recording vocals, but they definitely can't be the worst and thankfully they are affordable. I just think the mic on these cans looks silly. 😂
Funnily I find TE's cheaper products the PO33 specifically, to be really impressive especially for the price. But they have some other things I would snag if I was more wealthy haha. The TP-7 Specifically, I'm trying to snipe a SC500, similar but not the same, but a lot cheaper, and never in stock :(.
Def considering these cause at the moment, I use my studio headphones to like produce music outside with pocket operators and stuff🤔...and I'm not really that keen on bringing my studio headphones with me like all the time😳
I've had these for about 2 years, I've used them with volcas, pos, and the op-1 1, I think they look like a cheap pair of 80s headphones 2, they sound ok for what I do which is to make electronic music for myself 3 totally agree about the HD600s a cheaper and good pair of open backs is the Samson s80s which is my go to pair when listening to music or mixing etc Great video Thanks LK
Would it had been so hard to add a bluetooth option? Most headphones are offering the option of attaching a cable to principally wireless cans. Odd that they didn't consider a wireless aesthetic.
I randomly bought the M-1s a few weeks back still waiting for them to be shipped. Stoked to mess with it and the OP-Z together but not expecting much in terms of sound quality. Awesome vid. Torn between saving up for a TX-6 or an OP-1 Field. Definitely gonna own one of those someday. The OP-Z might be enough for me. Currently craving a proper analog synth tho so might save for a Polybrute instead. Do you have have any recommendations on a midi controller to use with the OP-Z? Arturia seems prettier but the MPK mini plus seems enticing. Sorry for writing so much 😅 Awesome vid again, stoked to eventually receive mine.
I imagine if u still want that same Ikea aesthetic then you could just go with AIAIAI headphones which aren't flat sounding either but prob need less EQ than this does to get to target graphs.
....how could any headset NOT be compaitble with the TX-6? Also, how is "daisy chaining headphones for a shared listening experience" any different than a 5 dollar passive headphone splitter... that works with any headset? This whole thing boggles my mind...
@@wxves_the_mixer Sounds right. I binge YT on 2x and I hit the pop-up for this video when it landed. I watched the whole video .. and just like some of the comments here, some key points were a focus on aesthetics (which I don’t think are good, but that’s subjective; lightweight, maybe - they appear to be …), sound quality (not great, from all accounts) … with some additional feedback in the comments about breakability/non-durability (even this video said, in not-as-many-words, that you have to ‘coddle’ them somewhat). Imho, you’d be better off putting the money towards a good set of headphones, with better sound and durability. That’s not hate; just an honest, non-shill opinion. But, hey - you do you. Hipsters gonna hipster. 💸
@@LiamKillen People like to find a reason why something is too much or not worthy. The reality is why waste your time. No one needs someone to convince them that something is too pricey or not. Everyone has their own taste and budgets.
@@LiamKillen I remember back when they announced the OP-1 in the 2010s, the comments were already just as toxic as they are today. TE seem to struck a nerve with certain people.
@@XanderEwald Yeah, people who want to look like musicians without actually having anything to do with music. It’s our generation’s version of the “guy with a guitar” who just learned Wonderwall to pick up girls, but complains that the coolest looking guitars cost so much, having no concept of the features and reasons behind the cost. Social media made the audience for those kinds of people explode. You can only half blame TE for kinda sorta playing into the whole “image” as part of their marketing strategy.
They are toys for people who have to much money and want everybody to see how different and cool they are at creating music. Teenage engineering expensive toys to fleece the trendy set of there money…….fare play I wish I thought of it!!!

@@LiamKillen And it seems pretty accurate, to me … you mentioned aesthetics, and how much ‘signal correction’ you applied to these things … If I hadn’t watched the whole video, I would have been temped to add “and who have money to burn …”; but they must be able to make these things *really* cheap, in order to maintain something close to the standard TE mark-up/premium, whilst retailing inexpensively (for headphones) …. Which doesn’t mean they are good value, of course …

the microphone sound sucks
This is a really useful piece of information. Thank you for that!

My thoughts exactly

Hell yea.
My main positives of the M1 is that they are lightweight and comfortable to wear over an extended period.
True!
▲ looking good in the new studio and with that fresh cut! 👀
Ayyy thx! This studio is a MAJOR game changer
Teenage Engineering makes some awesome products. ❤
They do!
Had mine for about 2 years. They snapped.

the aesthetic is on point - that's for sure.
thx for that review... was thinking of the M-1 for "zoom" meetings. would love to hear a comparison with other headphones with a mic.
They’d work great for zoom meetings
I like the format and structure. Nice work!

As for a midi controller I use the Keystep 37 which works great

TE has gone out of the realm of usable gear. Just not getting what their trying to do. Some of their recent products are not really for musicians.
They’re def going into a different direction
are they good for field recording?
I'd say no actually because they don't block external sound like at all.
Only someone that actually wants the item would spend so much energy talking down on a product.
