My pops was a firefighter mom was a nurse my brother and I both joined the Marine Corps Infantry this is spot on. When bullets, fires, or mistakes happen no one cares about your personal feelings. We all just want to do our job and go home, to the bar for a game thats on, or make it back for ma's world famous Chicken Parm. That's all that should matter.

This is the fire service I came up in. You fucked up you got called on it, and it sucked. But you didn’t make that mistake again
I learned the job at the kitchen table.
3 years into retirement and you know what I miss the most…. It’s not the cool guy stuff. I miss the guys sitting at the table busting balls

@@noahbyrne2402 I miss talking with the guys at the table solving the department’s problems or the world’s problems. You can’t yell at the boots in the academy. If you can’t train these recruits under pressure how are they going do it on the Fire Ground? I have been called shit for making a mistake and I definitely never let it happen again. You can’t do that anymore because you might offend someone or hurt their feelings. It softens the line personnel.

    • @noahbyrne2402

@@cafryrmn2550 It was getting there when I retired. I’ve never been the hammer at the station. Better to be nice to the new boots, they are stressed out already. So when you need to be serious and hammer one of them they get that it is was serious. You aren’t the designated asshole, so if your mad they fucked up.
The problem I see is like the first kid who commented. They think there opinions matter and we care what they think when we give them an order…..they don’t know to just shut up and listen. I’ve seen senior captains get “talked to” by chiefs because some boot had his feelings hurt.
It’s not like officers need to be hard asses either, they should be leaders of young men and women. The youngsters need to learn there place so they can then earn there rightful place. This isn’t shoe sales… it’s life and death

Being a volunteer firefighter, this show is spot on with name calling and the things they say to each other. But in the end we all get our duties done. What matters is the lives we serve to protect and it's like a big dysfunctional family that only functions when duty calls

Fucking love Tommy! Very flawed character, but you love him more for it. He's a raging alcoholic, horrible husband, not the best father, and always seems to make terrible decisions in his personal life... But get him inside the firehouse with his crew, and he's always the one that ends up knocking some damn sense into everybody by speaking nothing but the truth, and lastly, he's the best firefighter and a damn hero!! He saves so many lives, he risks his life more than the rest of the crew. He somehow wants to make up for all his sins by saving as many lives as he can, it's his way of telling God to forgive him, and it's ultimately his way not to hate himself for all the mistakes he has made.
There's a scene in season 5 where he watches old family clips and you see how hurt he gets when he sees Connor. You realize he still blames himself and he hasn't forgiven himself because he grabs a torch and starts burning his leg on purpose as punishment. Tommy is the best character from any show I've ever seen, simply because he's so real.

This is a great little piece of TV. You've got Tommy and Franco trying to saving Lou here from getting in trouble by trying to talk to Laura like on of the crew. First Franco as the secret boyfriend to Laura tries to hammer it home. Then Tommy the real leader of the firehouse comes through in a caring manner. It showed a lot about Tommy as a character in a very short amount of time.

Yup, and when you fuck up in a situation as dangerous as fighting fires where your life and the life of others is on the line, your superior needs to get your attention and strike the fear of god in you so you either never do it again or you decide this ain't the job for me and quit.
There is no 'well, I tried' or 'oops, I made a mistake' and paying no mind to it in that job.

When you f up in a compromising life or death situation you will receive retribution so as not to f up again. Boy I tell ya people think the depts and the military (primarily infantry jobs) are racist and sexist but the thing is they're really exactly the opposite because we all know in these professions death doesn't give a flying rats ass about who you are individually.

Just cause it's a cultural norm in the service doesn't make it right. We condone a lot of behavior in the fire service and that's something my TO alluded to before we hit the companies. Just cause we're firefighters doesn't permit us to act certain ways, even when we know we wouldn't do them outside the firehouse... you can still be good at your job without engaging in these things but then again you can't conversate about this without someone saying your too sensitive or lack thick skin

The latest was one of the newer firefighters, around the kitchen table, was talking about a new female probie who was kicking ass in the drill tower. He commented to another firefighter that she was really aggressive, kicking ass that he got a hard on. A female Engineer happen to turn the corner and heard the end of the conversation and got very angry. She went to the Captain and told what she heard, was very offended and wanted those firefighters disciplined 😮. The Captain was forced to council the firefighters.......for complementing the new female firefighter on her aggressiveness. Times have changed......glad I’m retired
