One thing I noticed about his character is that he always uses his tough job as an exuse to do everyrhing else wrong, drinking, cheating on his wife, being an a**hole most of the time..I mean there are a lot of dangerous occupations out there, police officers, soldiers..I doubt they use their heavy duty to cover up their bad deeds, some of them even do not sin, they're just happy to get back home safe to their families.
I'm super pleased that Leary written down that the actors said 'Hi...' to every alias he used in this session. Really brightens my mood to see that I'm not the only one who seems them as moronic assholes.
I hate this scene but also love it depending on the intentions of the director. If this scene is to show what tommy is hiding behind, "his job and the people he has seen dead/dying, 9/11 as an excuse for being a cheating violent drunk" that's fine. If it was a scene to shit on people that are struggling in their own way and "compare traumas" as if its a contest? Fuck that and fuck off. I was a first responder in a high crime, high volume urban environment for 4 years, went to work in organ donation up until the pandemic and then volunteered in hospitals and ICU's during COVID before I fully crashed and burned out. However my Mom, who never was in the medical field, took care of her Mom, her sister and her father all at the end of their lives as the primary decision maker in their health up until the end of their lives, literally being there for the death of her father as he took his last breaths on earth. She has PTSD and struggled with alcoholism. And from what I saw her go through, struggle with and overcome, she is my HERO and always will be, she has saved me and provided a light house to follow in the darkness. What I love about Dennis Leary's acting in this scene is how much I hate that he wants to use trauma as a way to put down others explaining their own trauma. Praise to Leary for portraying this character in such an honest way, but fuck tommy for throwing that in the face of those in recovery. You know not what other go through until you walk in their shoes period. +

The biggest flaw of this show is that it uses trauma and 9/11 as an excuse for these guys to do some incredibly fucked up stuff. But in terms of firehouse life, it’s the most accurate portrayal I’ve seen.

There's no shame in trying and then admitting it's not for you. But speaking as a washout myself, the guys who can manage to carry that burden deserve all your respect. And if they are suburban volunteers, just know that without them your taxes would skyrocket to fund a full time fire department just for one township.
There was a "I'm a firefighter" type in my community though. His name was [REDACTED] but yeah everyone thought he was an ass. Not because he was lazy, but because he would use his blue light to pull people over for speeding. In reality few firefighters are like that.
Tommy is not meant to be a role model. He’s an anti-hero. He takes his job seriously but he’s a raging alcoholic who suffers from PTSD which gets him into trouble throughout the series.
