I want a Surge with better blade steel & a tiny driver tool. The Surge is the biggest / heaviest duty Leatherman, why limit it to the cheapest steel? Would love to see a "Surge + TTi".
To be fair cheap steel doesn't mean bad steel or worse steel, actually many expensive steel like CPM-S30V are more fragile than cheaper steel like 14C28N, AEB-L or even 420HC, even Magnacut is more fragile than those 3 steel. That's because for steel, toughness is often inversily proportional to hardness. When steel is hard it becomes brittle and it chip and fracture easily, but hard steel do hold an edge better than softer steel, it is also harder to machine which drive the cost up. And also harder to sharpen. Ultimately it is just a matter of preferences they are no perfect steel it is all trade off, sure some steel are objectively better than other. Like CPM-S35VN is better in every way than 154CM and Magnacut is better in every way than CPM-S35VN. But some other steel have performances profile so different you can't even compare them, you can't really compare a 420Hc to a CPM-S35VN and a CPM-S90V because their performances profile is too different 420HC maximise toughness over Edge retention, CPM-S90V maximise Edge retention over Toughness, and CPM-S35VN is an happy medium with decent Toughness for decent Edge Retention. Personally for an everyday carry I value toughness over Edge Retention so I prefer 420HC over CPM-S35VN and CPM-S30V.
I'm inclined to agree. It's so easy for us knife guys to become steel snobs. I have used and abused many leatherman models over the years and they're 440hc has never let me down.
If you got the regular or the ratchet driver for the Surge and equipped it in the sheath, you can buy a Victirinox tiny screwdriver (gor glasses) and put it in that driver. Its name is A.3643. I wear glasses and this is what i did. It wont come of by itself, in fact you will probably remove it with the pliers, because its plastic handle and very grippy on that driver.
@@Fablades the Titanium would make it weaker though. Test a charge next to a wave and you will see the charge feels more ‘bendy’ when you put a lot of force on the pliers. I wish they made the charge like the wave, one piece handles instead of bolting on Titanium side plates
Very nice thorough comparison, thanks. I just got a Surge today after having lost my Charge TTi at the end of July this year. I loved the Charge, carried it every day for 5 years and have felt like I lost a hand without it for the past 6 months. I'm 99% sure it was stolen from my home by a tradesman, I've turned the place upside down a couple of times hunting for it. The only reason I ordered the Surge to replace it is on the very slim chance that the Charge turns up some day, so I don't end up with two of the same.
I don't even hand my Surge to anyone. I'll do what they need done before I hand it off. People touch a quality multi tool and immediately start plotting!! Hope it turns up. But if it does you probably won't carry it after using the Surge. IMHO it's the best multi tool ever.
I bought a Charge TTi about 2 weeks ago. They FINALLY took out the notch in the needle nose pliers section. No more wire stripper, you get the full needle nose now.
Brother thanks for a good review. I also have em both. Charge tti is cute but can't use it carelessly, small screwdriver already broke & afraid to drop & break the plier tip. Surge is much much more reliable if u can take the weight, in terms of function & against danger. I edc surge all the time, only took it off on bed. Best, get em both. These two are the best in Leatherman line. Again thanks for a wonderful review.
They serve somewhat different purpose! The charge would be for medium work and pocket portability , also the charge is smoother, do to it’s brass pivot point! He forgot to mention that!
I'm a fulltime Surgelover. I do pretty big and heavy work with my big hands so I carry the Surge during the day. But then I carry the SOG powerpint outside of work. They big and the small both serve me a lot of merit in their own ways. Good video, I will subscribe and check this place out.
Both great multi tools. I use the Charge for everyday home/garden use and the Surge at work. I put a Bosch type wood cutting blade on the Surge and leave the file/sharpener with an extra metal cutting blade in the Surge’s case.
Great comparison and tutorial. I have both tools, and learned a few things (like the hidden loop). I just purchased the Surge primarily for the slight electrical (e.g. crimping) advantages over the Surge.
Nice video. I have an older Charge and can’t remember why I chose it. Maybe the S30V steel? Anyway have used it for about 7 years around the property and has served me well. I really liked the Surge’s scissors.
I consider the Leatherman Charge TTI more of an upgraded wave. I recently damaged my old wave plus so I replaced it with a Leatherman Charge TTI and I have to say I really do like the extra features that The Charge TTI has over the wave + and plus it has better Quality Steel! Don't ever try to remove rust from your multi-tools with vinegar 😖😖😅😅
Broke the pliers on my Charge TTI right at the "crimper". Sent it back and got it repaired. But, I lost faith in it after that. Sits in a drawer 100% of the time now. Rebar is what I rely on now.
Out of all the reviews I have seen, no one ever has said " Thank God it came with a gut hook " . If anything they have said they use it as a box opener.. ( A dangerous one at that..)
I would need a tool to carry around in any situation that also helps me in the work I do, I'm a security officer in a cruise ship terminal, and I often have to quickly cut ropes or something like that, and yet I I would also like to have a tool to carry with me even when I'm having dinner with my girlfriend or when I go out with my friends, I was undecided between the wave plus and the surge for one factor, the surge seems more resistant and more complete to me. but I'm afraid it's too big, and that this compromises the use of the pliers, I have very big hands though and there shouldn't be a problem, which one would you recommend between these 2?
I know its kinda (pretty) late 2 tell; that im awaiting my 1st LM Surge. Hope its gonna arive pretty soon. I was considering to buy a Wave+ or a Surge. But then, after i saw your videos about Surge, i've made my mind 2 pucrhasing a Surge, with its replacable saw (its Bosch), a bit adaptor n a ratchet adaptor. Even im not gonna use my Surge 4 any works, somehow i just feel the need 2 buy those accessories. A Charge's serrated knife is on my top list to b installed in my Surge. I hope i just fall in this Surge, but some say that a LM wont b enough 😅😁. Thankyou 4 your reviews n enlight me bout Surge, so i can make a decision, sir 😎😁
Apart from being slightly smaller, Would it be possible to put the Charge serrated blade/package opener in the Surge to replace its serrated blade and would it lock out okay with no play..?

Привет из России! Спасибо за видео! Как раз сейчас разрываюсь в выборе между Surge и Charge Plus TTi. Hello from Russia! Thank you for the video! Right now I'm trying to make a choice between Surge and Charge Plus TTi.
Surge hands down, after purchasing mine 2 years ago I will not settle for anything less…. It trumps both the wave and charge in all aspects at a cheaper price than that of the charge which is a horrendous waste of money if you ask me..
Yea can’t go wrong with the Surge! Only situations I see it not fitting is when weight and size are a concern, but beside that it’s an amazing multi tool!

Or if they sold the upgrade separately you could just buy the blade and swap it over

I can use my Surge one handed easy. I wish there was a titanium version of the Surge. It would be perfect and with a s45vn blade.
That would be cool!
Yeah if it had the upgrade steel it would be perfect 🤩,why don’t they do that?
Mostly to contain costs, would be awesome to see it in titanium and with upgraded steel for the main blade
i'd like cr mo blade for surge

I prefer the Surge, the versatility and sturdiness wins over size and weight for me. Still, both are amazingly good tools 👊
I bought a Charge TTi about 2 weeks ago. They FINALLY took out the notch in the needle nose pliers section. No more wire stripper, you get the full needle nose now.
I can’t work out if that’s a good thing or not. What do you think?
The large flat head screwdriver tool found on both models can easily be filed down to form a really effective small chisel.or scraper
Good idea.

Surge over Surge?

Out of all the reviews I have seen, no one ever has said " Thank God it came with a gut hook " . If anything they have said they use it as a box opener.. ( A dangerous one at that..)
