I have owned them both, and if you work in the trades, drive a truck or do a lot of outdoors stuff, go with the Surge. If like he said, you want it to open Amazon packages, work on your bicycle or tinker around the house, you might want the Wave. Also if you are a female with smaller hands you might find the Wave easier to manipulate. I use the Surge as my EDC at work and gave the Wave to the wife.
@@ulary that’s the thing he says if you’re in the trades carry a surge. I am in the trades but I think the surge is unnecessary if you carry an actual knife. My wave plus a separate knife is perfect for me. I don’t think a surge would handle what my knife does
I love the surge for EDC and its perfect for taking on road trips on motorcycles if you add a small socket set the ratcheting bit extender and bits you can fix most simple issues and even rebuild an entire carburetor if you have to that's not recommended or fun but is completely possible.
My cousin bought a surge, he has a desk job tho 😂 found no use for it lol he sold it to me for $70. I do low voltage electrical and this thing gets the job done for multiple tasks. Love it 👍🏽
Surge is the first and only multitool I bought and it suits my needs. After I got used to it i was in a store that had a bunch of Leathermans and they all looked so tiny like toys. Both great IMO
Patiently waiting for my new Surge to show up 12-17-22! I currently use Gerber 600. Will miss the flick of wrist opening but the surge looks so much more capable. I am a electronic tech working offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. I work inside and outside. So there are tons of stairs on these platforms. My MT has saved me countless times from going to tool bag. I just got a Wave+ for my birthday, I have an original Supper Tool (1998) for work as a fireman and I have a Gerber in my truck. The Surge is, however, intriguing.
The external tools would be a game changer for you!! So much better (although the original tools are great), the external tools are fantastic on all models. Thanks
Those are very nice tools, never had a Leatherman but do have a pair of Gerber multi pilers, been carrying them for over 25 years, and used them everyday, I'll be lost without them,...me I like the one hand operation for the pilers,....but both tools are a great tool to have, like you said, it's about what you used them for, enjoy all your videos, keep up the great work 👍
If you like the one hand operation you should check out the leatherman free p4 or free p2. Gerber makes some good tools as well, whichever design and function that works best for each person. Thank you and thank you for watching.
I abuse my tools a lot. I've chipped a flathead on the wave, and bent a knife corner on the crunch, but my surge has not been damaged yet lol. It's a tank and can really take a beating.
A huge advantage I sent for the surge is that you can remove the file to sharpen the blades. One question though, what’s the difference between the black oxide and regular stainless in terms of ‘surgical’ hygiene, in case it’s needed to manage first aid applications right after being being used to gut a fish or something? Is the stainless likely to be easier to clean for any reason? What are the pros/cons of each finish?
Hi yes the removable file is a huge benefit because as you said, you can sharpen the blade with the file within the multi tool which is great for many reasons. The stainless is would be easier to clean in that circumstance as the black oxide coating is classified as a "semi porous" material making it a little more difficult to sterilize if needed/and clean after. The black oxide adds a very minimal amount of thickness to the handles and blades etc so I know some people have had a issue with tools being "tough or sticky" to open as compared with stainless however it seems that improves as the coating wears off at the pivot points. Benefits would be: less reflective/noticable, also the black oxide adds a little bit of grip texture as compared to the plain when it is wet. (but the black oxide does come off and can get on your hands/clothes as well). Pros and cons of both but I prefer the non black oxide myself. Thanks for watching.
Great comparison,, I have a Charge AL, and full bit sets, so I'm very happy, but it's nice to see alternatives,, !! I got the Charge at a massive discount, (on sale),, so I'm perfectly happy with my complete multi tool set up, 😍,,, The main drawback, is the Charge, (and any locking knife /multi tool), is illegal to carry in public, here in the UK,, !!! So, I can only use it around the house, or garden,,, and hence my recent switch to SAK's,,,, which fall within our "stupid" laws, for carrying most places,,, 👍,, Anyway, I've recently found your channel and subbed,, great video, All the best from across the pond,,, John.. 😀

This is good to know thank you, would it be possible to simply shim it up for a snug fit potentially by sanding or filing down the "t" shank off another old worn-out blade or something like that?

@@johnnyringo2185 strangely enough, I use the correct tool for the job when I'm in a set location or workstation. The multitool is for when you're not by the fridge. When someone hands you a beer in the field you'll be emasculated quickly asking for an opener to have them flip the cap off for you with a random item like a lighter. You'd be surprised how often people cut themselves using a blade where scissors would have been a much safer choice. I'm a medium or large glove, average sized male hands. My ideal grip on the handles is when the pliers are basically closed. On a wave it's much more ergonomic. It's just a fact that they scaled up the wave and didn't correct/adjust this ergonomically. Look at the Free and the ARC - they corrected the handle angle issue on those models
