What makes re4 so great for me is just remembering what it was like playing for the first time. It was definitely the best gaming experience I’ve ever had and swapping between that and mgs3 snake eater was such an awesome time to be 12. I haven’t played re4 since ps2, but I certainly am looking forward to the remake and the nostalgic moments I hope it can bring.
u literally just described my childhood. RE4 and MGS3 Snake Eater blew my mind at 12. Those 2 games really changed video games as we know it.

I used to hate how RE4 controlled, however after giving it a chance and properly learning the game, I completely understand the love for it. While yes I do prefer the control styles of RE2 and 3 remakes (which is what I’m the most excited for), I DO understand why it was made the way it was.
When I played re4 I didn't like the controls but I got used, To used to controls that it took me a while get used to other first person and 3rd person shooters games
Just started playing it today, i like the controls although I wish you could shoot without zooming in. I played a bit of silent hill prior so o was able to get used to tank controls so i think that's why they feel fine to me haha
I played RE4 at a buddys house for the first time a few months after it came out. I absolutely hated it. I grew up on the original trilogy and it was so different I just couldnt stand four. Fast forward like eight years later another buddy let me borrow it to try again. I stuck it out and absolutely fell in love with it. Its now one of my favorite and most replayed games. I play my PS2 more than anything else. I bounce heavily betwen RE4, RtCW, and few others I get the itch to play now and again. RE4 is one of the best games ever made.
Honestly I never had a problem with the controls, for me it was very easy. I enjoyed playing RE4 so much!

The Controls in RE4 aren't really bad for one Particular Reason:
The Game is Built Around them, as shown in the Enemies & (MOST) of the Environments/Levels. As Enemies have a Start and Stop Pattern to them and only occasionally Bum Rush The Player Down so therefore you have Perfect Time to Either Reposition yourself or Stand your Ground & Fight back and if you do get hit or Grabbed you have some Invincibility Frames to allow yourself to Breathe & Reposition OR Blow back some hordes with a Powerful Shotgun Blast or a CQC Roundhouse Kick. The Environments are also built for the Combat as Well as Whilst they're mostly tight Combat areas have Verticality or are more square like with Buildings/Structures to Set up Fort in and Kill Enemies or Reposition etc, HOWEVER there are some like The Water Room or the Cage to get the Hourglass that aren't that well thought out and would Benefit greatly from the Remake Treatment.

My hot take for RE4 is this. Luis Sera should've lived and became a supporting character within the franchise. Damn Capcom for making great supporting roles and then axing then when we get attached to them.

I think they devs know how fun the gun play is so they add some rooms with a lot of enemy’s to just have fun. That’s why I like the end section of 4 and 7 to just use all ammo and go all out.
I also hate when people say the game drags too long because all resident evil games are short so I really don’t want them to cut any in the remake. Same thing happened to re3 remake, to fix “pacing”. Give me as much game as possible please

Yes, I'll admit the controls on my first playthrough drove me insane. But I actually love this game and the story. We're out of Racoon City and seeing how this evil spreads across the world, Leon is a badass and this game had a lot of moments that made me yell at my TV in surprise/jumpscares
I don’t think RE4 has bad controls but dear lord, the “the controls aren’t bad, it’s designed that way” just cause that’s how something is designed doesn’t mean you can’t critique it, if I make a game where shoot, reload and jump are all the same button by design, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s shitty design
I love the controls in Re 4. It has this charm that makes the game good. It’s so unique and special and I HOPE that they add the old controls as an option you can chose in the remake.
I've always enjoyed playing RE4 and now seeing your video i feel like playing again. Controls aren't a major problem once you finish a few sections when playing first time. And tbh in my opinion it's the most revolutionary game in the franchise. Probably my favourite game of all time alongside GTA San Andreas.
Those who complained how near the camera is to leon, the hd project mod has adjustments for wider field of view, except it doesn't shoulder to leon when you aim, so you get some lose some. I don't use the fov adjustment at all.
Controls are a nightmare. tank controls are the worst
the only bad thing I have to say about this game is Ashley's screaming I am really excited to see how she acts in the remake

its really the archers plus shield guys and speedrunners. Doing water hall isn't that hard if you search around for ammo and explore everywhere. It's just hard for speedrunners since they're esentially running through a crowd of people with riot shields

I just started playing RE4 on the PS4 2 months ago and while the controls were challenging at first after you get used to the movement it’s no trouble at all and I genuinely love this game it’s probably my favorite game of all time. Of course it has its faults but I find myself always going back to it.

RE4 for developers should be a manual on how to construct an amazing third person shooter. Like a rule book. Don’t copy it but look at what the game did well and implement that in your games. Look at what the game didn’t do well, and avoid that. But the most important thing to take from RE4 is to innovate and invent. That is what made RE4 one of the best games ever made.

Been a huge RE fan since the original I was 11 when I first played it in 96 and have been hooked ever since, just beat it again today!(within 3 hours and I saved Chris)The HD remake of the original is my favorite game ever, for me imo it’s perfect. What I don’t like about RE4 is how much it changed the formula of the originals they dumbed it down and made it more accessible for casuals and they kept trying to do it over again with part 5 and 6. It’s missing the eerie horror movie atmosphere, puzzles, music and has way to much ammo and healing items, little suspense with to much action and I may be in the minority here but I LOVED THE FIXED CAMERA ANGLES they set such a great vibe/mood. Now I liked RE4 when it first came out but over time when I try to play it again I get bored, it feels like a generic over the shoulder shooter and just want to play the originals or some of the newer titles in the series. I absolutely love the resident evil franchise it’s my favorite video game franchise of all time but I wouldn’t put RE4 in my top ten RE games…..yes I will play the remake and am anticipating it to be better.
Dude, I just posted a long winded comment of my own but I just wanted to say I couldn't agree with you more. I loved the fixed camera angles, i loved the puzzles, the lack of ammo and ink ribbons. RE4 and the games that came after made things too easy. You hit the nail on the head.

Although I do feel like the part two remake was almost right there. would be cool if they had a dlc/update that had fixed camera angles for RE2
@@michaelscarn5311 I hear you man. After the RE remake came out years ago on the Gamecube, I dreamed of a similar remake for RE2, with crimson heads and updated visuals. That never came. As it stands I think the RE2 remake was ok. I get the love for the over the shoulder shooting, even if it isn't how I feel RE should be. I also think they handled Mr. X pretty well. But I hate how they botched the multiple scenarios. If a game from 1998 could make the multiple scenarios not only unique, but also make choices affect the others characters gameplay, why couldn't they do it in a modern game?

As for the very first part, I'm pretty sure they were referring to the fact that the old PC port essentially emulated a controller with the keyboard (or more like it had 1:1 bindings) and the mouse was essentially useless

when I first played re4 I had never played with tank controls before and I genuinely got dizzy playing the game because I tried to always look around and scan the entire area quickly while walking around like I do with modern control games, and so in my first 30 minutes I legit thought of dropping it just for the controls but having heard so many good things about the game I decided to stick through and in a few hours I got used to it, one of my favorite games now
the controls are very strange when you are used to modern gaming, but it takes less than half an hour of play time to start getting used to and good at them. and the more you play and go through the game the better you get. to me, that is very satisfying and rewarding to see
EXACTLY, I only died once and it was in that area right after you meet the merchant for the first time (you know, houses on the cliffside n shit). Got stuck when I should have moved around a lot, on my second try I actually opened up and started actually aiming. Pressing downstick and A to quickly turn around more, it just snapped in me and I began kicking and shooting fluently while moving around. This game so far is amazing.
Controls are a perfectly valid reason to dislike a game. You say it was intentionally designed that way to make it harder, that is a shameful excuse for bad game design.
It’s ok to admit a game has flaws and the controls is one of those. This is why the remake will succeed the original in every way.
I love RE4 and i would play it a billion times i will admit the control were a little confusing at first but i got use to it pretty quickly
I didn't get RE4 until it was released on the PS2 but I still got used to the controls. At the time it was my most played game and I still love it to this day. Can't wait for the RE4R next year.
Re5 is probably the most fun I’ve had when playing with a friend. It’s fantastic. Re4 is better single player because doing re5 and relying on the AI can be a bit horrible
I think it's fair to say that tank controls, no matter the perspective, can take some getting used to if you're used to being able to "run and gun" in other games.
Even if tank controls are easy to get used to, the camera on the other hand... I really love RE4, but that camera gives me motion sickness and only works if you sit far enough on a couch or something like that. If you are playing on PC, having an FOV mod is a must.
IVe gotten so used to the RE4 controls I accidentally try to turn by moving my character in other RE games.
Re 4 was the first horror game I played on my pc when I was 9 and I really loved it. Its not a perfect game but I think a few changes could make the game even better like completely change ashley ,work more on the aiming and have more back stories. Btw loved ur opinion on re 4 :-)

I don't mind not moving while shooting but I just wished I could use the right stick to aim instead of the left stick. I'm able to have fun with it but if I could change one thing that'll be it.

RE4 is definitely one of my favourite games and I will never forget the first time it came out where I played it on the GameCube.
Over the shoulder perspective changed everything and that opening section in the village with Dr Salvador the Chainsaw man will always be an iconic scene which brought so much tension.
RE4 Remake I can't wait for.
I used to own re 4 on the wii and i hated it because of the horrid controls and never touched the game because of them, until one day i decided to actually try it, little did i know that it would become my favorite game ever, next to dmc.

I also find it weird how people unreasonably hate Ashley for being "annoying" when she's probably the best escort. She won't go headfirst into trouble. She will duck upon being in the proximity of laser sight. She will get behind you over the shoulder. You can hide her in most spots in the village except the village centre. She will give an indicator when she's being picked by Ganados. Most likely, of She dies or gets carried, its because you were careless, not Ashley being "bad" or smyh
And water room. I remember being stuck into that room for weeks before learning how to do it properly lmao

Honestly, to me, resident evil was never truly about just zombies. It was more specifically centered around Umbrella and their biochemical weapons, so it would make sense for them to start producing different viruses to make more effective killers with each individual virus. That's how Mr X and Nemesis were made
I didn't notice control problems when I first played. I got this game when I was 7 after school on the Wii being one of the first modern games i played ( at the time tge wii just came out and the newest system i played before that was the N64.) I love this game own it on like 6 systems.
I remember when I was young I had the GameCube version and I didn’t have a memory card and I could never turn off the game but once I did I had to restart all over again. And idk there was two discs and I lost the other lol

My only issue with RE4 was it felt like it was a bunch of cool ideas all pushed together and they tried to fit the story around it. There's so many random things that don't make sense to come one after the other.
Take time. Eventually you will appreciate the controls and story. I also felt the same before i started playing. I love it now.
Personally, re4 is a really good game but the island and castle settings don't really hold up for me, but I really love the lab and village settings

RE5 was not has good has RE4 but it was not terrible. RE6, my hopes were way to high and it felt short for me. The only story I liked was Leon's.

Salazar sure is the best part of RE4. But Leon acting so out of character to cosplay Dante from DMC and doing all the superhero stuffs he shouldn't be able to do in the first place are what make you like the game. Also that's a reason why real survivor horror fans hate it, and theyre correct.
Resident evil 4 is the game that fully helped me be able to get into the older games. Re4 is amazing game and I've played it so many times

Re5 was the first re game i played and to this day its still my favorite re game. I barely played re4 in 2021, so not that long ago. Re4's an awesome game, but I personally prefer re5.

As someone who just played every main resident evil game excluding the first three(played the remakes of 2 and 3, as I couldn't get the first 3)I have to say that re4 is definitely my favorite. Controls were annoying for a short while, but weren't as bad as some games I've played and I adapt well. Great game

I know at the time for me, I was one of the people who didn't like it for kind of going off in its own direction without the zombies, for me Resident Evil built itself off of the whole zombie deal. I know at the time I had no problem with the controls, now coming back to play it years later in my late 20's IVE HATED THE CONTROLS lol I don't know if it was getting used to having two independant cameras then having to switch back to the static camera, or what it was. The only complaint I really had that stuck from the first time I played it, was the atmosphere, it didn't have the same horror feel to me. While there were some aspects that got me and still do, the darkness, ambient light kind of thing. The washed out brown grey red color scheme I never liked in any series of games. The only other complaint I had was what they did with Leon, to me he seemed to be a more upbeat person in Resident Evil 4 he seemed to be the depressed emo I hate my life kinda person. But I can say I beat the living piss out of this game, I remember sitting with it for hours on end, collecting the bottle caps, upgrading all the weapons, getting all the tresure... I had my fun with it for sure.
I only played Resident Evil 4 for the first time 2-3 years ago because there were various obstacles preventing me from simply playing it back during the PS2 days (Resident 1 & Resident Evil 4 were the only Resident Evil games I hadn't played up to that point).
Anyway 2-3 years ago I got my hand on the PS4 Remastered version of Resident Evil 4, a part of me was worried it would feel too janky with outdated controls and mechanics by today's standards, and while the controls did take some getting used to, I was pleasantly surprised and very quickly understood why it was unanimously regarded as a masterpiece, as it truly deserves all the praise it gets.
The one thing I hate about it is professional because I can’t sprint fast enough on the boulder apart because my fingers are bad but very good game

I remember as a kid the village ganados scaring the feck out of me and this was after i already dabbled in re2 and 3. 4 is awesome and I've been playing the ada dlc recently on ps4 and the charm is all still there. Leon ftw btw.

3)island is just enemy spam
4)not difficult enough (not sayin it's a bad thing but experienced players need challenge for their 20th playthrough)
5)bad replay ability
6)inventory management(sorting your inventory everytime you pick anything and opening inventory to switch guns)
7)not scary enough to be a "horror game"
8)bosses are nothing special(except Mendez,first El gigante and krauser)
9)Ashley(she is not the worst to protect but I'd rather not have her)
10)not much lore is given (how los illuminados came to be,how saddler knew about las plagas and Salazar family story)

Re5 was my first re game, so i figured the aiming was the same. Just recently, I tried to play 4, and I couldn't. The delay in movement while aiming was too much.
I've only played on PS2 but I do own the first 4 game's on GameCube and currently doing a playthrough of Resident Evil Remake so maybe I'll do them all!
I hated the controls at first but I still play the game until I get used to it. The gameplay isn't even that bad, the story is plain simple but I love the game because it's really fun. You can't blame a video game for its controls.

From experience yeah re4 is a wonderful game and one of my friend never played video games so introduces him to resident evil games since i knew his love of horror movies and hes one of my closest friend and still now if needs help he comes to me i told him yes tank control are hard at first but when you sit down and learn the little tricks to play them it becomes second nature
Ok here is my take at the controls of the RE4: I LOVED the game when i was young, but i didn't played it again for years. Now that the remake is just around the corner, i bought it on Steam to play again so i can play the remake when it comes out. The first thing that i noticed was the awkward controls, when young i played it on Nintendo WII so i thought the controls was due to the WII controller beying the way it was at the time, but in the PC version it really got me off guard. But actually after about 20/30 minutes of gameplay it was a little bit natural and made a lot more sense, people who hate the game because of the controls just didn't try to play it long enought in my opinion, you can get used to it quite fast actually. In the menu there is also a toggle for a more modern look around controls, where u can use the mouse to look around very easily
Hot takes: The castle section was my fave and I wish it was longer. I love the opening village section but I'm really not a fan of most of the village section after that. Hate replaying that part cause you're still so weak early and mowing down all those villagers is an absolute drag.
I see not using clips of the villagers with their pitchforks in the beginning as a missed opportunity

The camera being to close to Leon is a big complaint of mine as well if the camera was pulled back more it would be a better exp also Ashley staying near the ground right near the enemies instead of moving away from them at times was also annoying RE4 is still a masterpiece
Fun fact with the Ultimate Trainer you can skip the QTEs and makes things easier

When i first played in 2017 on the xbox one, i hated it, or at least i hated the controls. I was used to the "fluidity" of modern gamess so I didnt give them a fair chance.
A few months before RE:Villages release i bought the main series. When i got to Re4 i gave it a fair chance and it became favorite Re game.
I'm really glad Capcom is doing a remake. There's a few things I really hate about this game even though I've done many playthroughs, the negative points are: 1) Plot is really mediocre compared to what we had on the RE trilogy 2) Game lacks on horror atmosphere cause it was too focused on action 3) QTEs are annoying and my most hated one is that stupid laser part 4) RE4 is too linear it really can't be considered a RE game, since one of the main aspects about old RE games were exploration and backtracking. But regardless the game is still good and fun and I hope Capcom fixes those points on the remake ( at least I know the horror atmosphere is much better)
Hey man hella late to this video (keep it up btw, love your stuff) but RE4 always sat wrong with me and the easiest way to say why is that the RE Remake is one of my fav games ever made.RE4 is a very good game, but to me it isn't RE, it was the death of those games. No more puzzle boxes to unfold and figure out, no more tight ammo and resource management, it was the beginning of the end for the RE series for me, at least for 13 years or so (i also have issues with RE7 but I'm just a die hard OG fan). And I do think RE5 is better, it just felt more polished in every area, but only in co-op, if I'm solo I would take RE4 any day.
So I've been playing the resident evil games WAY out of order. I started with re7. I am just now playing Re4 and I'm now in the castle. I am loving the game, but I do feel the controls make the game much harder. I had an easier time with Re5 and they are the same type of controls. I am still enjoying re4, but I do get frustrated sometimes with the controls.
The only game i still have on every device at my place. Even on my laptop and that says a lot about how much i love this game ❤️
RE4 for the wii actually controlled quite well with motion controls, probably the only game i've played where I can say that lol - as a side note, bad controls can definitely sour a game experience, just play at the original tomb raider and see how it holds up. Everyone talks about RE tank controls and never lara crofts jank controls.
I started playing it when i was about 10 (2014 or sth) and i still like the controls bc it makes the game the wait it is

If you played during the ps2 game cube era, is a master piece, it was the very peak of gaming when it came out, only gta san andreas tekken gran turismo would be at this level back then, if you come to think about it, you were comming from games like silent hill for example, or even resident evil 3, the fact you were able to see leon from behind, the Ai the voice acting of the characters, was incredible back then, i remember being completelly blown away by a 100% of the game back in the day
Re4 was one of my first games I've ever played also I played it on ps2 and it's the reason I like horror games
I don't think it ruins the games, but I do agree the controls are weird mix. It feels more natural to control pretty much any other number in the series 1-3 or 5 and on. That's my experience anyway.
Disagree,after getting used to the first 3 and/or code veronica games moving is much easier when you use the d-pad. Basicqlly the same game with different angles.
It's aiming with the dpad that threw me off but even then you can get used to it and it's not as floaty as aiming with the dpad
I do not understand how anyone could enjoy 5's controls fine but hate 4's tho,they're practically the same atleast for the ps4 port
Really the only compaint i have with RE 4 is that i almost always burn out by the island section. I just cannot stand the island segment. It has some of the best boss fights and the regeneradors but other than that, i dead playing it every time. Resident evil seems to have a pretty consistent issue with having a weak third act compared to its first two.
I love resident Evil. I played the first game and I couldn't figure out how to shoot my gun at the dog that scared me by jumping through the window. I died and I didn't touch the series till I rented RE4 on PS2 and after I died multiple times at the village but I was stuck with it for a week I kept playing it and I got thru and into new game plus. I love RE4, amazing controls.
