  • Resident Evil, known in Japan as Biohazard, is a Japanese horror video game series and media franchise created by Capcom. It consists of survival horror, third-person shooter, and first-person shooter games. The franchise has expanded into a live-action film series, animated films, television series, comic books, novels, audio dramas, and other media and merchandise.
The first Resident Evil was created by Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara and released for the PlayStation in 1996. It is credited for defining the survival horror genre and returning zombies to popular culture. With Resident Evil 4 (2005), the franchise shifted to more dynamic shooting action; it influenced the evolution of the survival horror and third-person genres, popularizing the "over-the-shoulder" third-person view. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) moved the series to a first-person perspective.

The thing with Resident Evil 4 is, the villagers are already a heightened threat to any zombies - they will actively pursue you up ladders and can actively cut you off - so is a stalker enemy even really necessary? I think if they restrict it to only certain parts (like the verdugo in the sewers) then it could work - but do we need someone chasing Leon through out every area? No thanks! XD

I find stalker enemies to be more annoying than scary. At first, Jack was terrifying, sure, but after a few playthroughs, I just got tired of dealing with him and Marguerite. Mr. X followed the same arc. I spent more time in save rooms waiting for him to leave so I can go on with my day.
Nemesis...was a pain. Lady D and the mutant baby made me loathe their respective parts of the game.

    • @EpicGamerSetzuna
      @EpicGamerSetzuna Рік тому +7

Unfortunately stalkers are not conducive to multiple playthroughs. Their welcome gets worn out the moment you learn the quirks of them and can avoid them easily, and on repeat playthroughs they become unfun to deal with, like an annoying fly buzzing in your ear. The only game I can think of where the stalker didn't eventually just become an annoyance is Metroid Dread, and its got a lot to do with them being in a confined space, and when you kill them they stay dead so you can clear the area of them eventually

    • @deepmind5318
      @deepmind5318 Рік тому +4

You didn't have to wait for him to leave. In fact, Capcom intended for you to rush your way to different areas. If you always waited a long time for him to leave, that's not how you were supposed to avoid him in the long run. You just have to always run from area to area especially when Jack is chasing you. I remember trying to complete a puzzle as fast as possible because Jack was right behind me. That adrenaline is what makes stalker enemies worth it. So the game consisted of rushing yourself around environments when Jack comes for you, it's like a speedrun. To me the molded are the worse part of the game. Every enemy is a molded, eventually i got frustrated with the molded because they usually appear in large numbers, and when that happens you get cornered in small places. I was facing 8 molded at the same time in a smaller place, and they managed to attack me on loop, meaning, one molded attacks me, the next one follows, then the next and on and on, leaving me unable to move because Ethan's damage animation kept playing, as i said, in loop.

Personally, I don’t think Jack’s lines made him scary, if anything they made him funnier and more likable. I think a good way to fix the stalker enemies is to have them all be like Mr. X, but once you “defeat” them, they will stay down until you completely leave the area and get far way, then they de-spawn and spawn decently far from you after a few minutes. This would give you incentive to take them out as you would buy yourself infinite time to complete whatever task you’re doing in the immediate proximity, and still a decent amount of time when you get far from their “downed” body, yet still making running away a viable option to save on resources.

    • @vivusbrydyr4039

This is how it was in the original RE2 and 3. I don't think that would be good for the games, because that would make those enemies a lot less scary. Their whole deal is you can't kill them but they can kill you, so you have to run, but if you must the option to put them down is actually still there. If you get Mr.X on his knees, he stays like that for an entire minute, that's more than enough to finish whatever you were doing the area and get the fuck out.

A stalker enemy will conflict with RE4’s pacing and design. RE4 as a linear game hinges on its pacing. It takes the player from one combat encounter to the next while giving you a breathing room (or “quite time” as some call it) in-between. The ebb and flow of the game is masterfully done. Adding a stalker enemy will ruin this type of “peaks and valleys” pacing of RE4. The reason why a stalker enemy worked with RE2/RE2R and the original RE3 is because those games have a lot of backtracking and more open and interconnected areas. Most of the time the player will be exploring the same areas over and over again looking for keys and solving puzzles. So having a stalker enemy works because it means that the player will be on his toes all the time and will not get bored of going back and forth in the same areas. Also, there isn’t a clear indication of when a combat encounter occurs (except for boss fights) because enemies are present all the time and you can either choose to fight them or avoid them. RE4 on the other hand is more focused on combat arenas and set-pieces. There’s a clear indication of when it’s time for the player to fight enemies and when it’s the time for him to take a breather and look for ammo, health, and money/treasures. RE4 has a different design philosophy than those games.

Its a remake. If they make changes then hopefully theyd change how the game progresses so that pacing isnt an issue. Theyve already said that while keeping the nature of resident evil 4 this is a remake and therefore they want to increase the horror factor of the game...its resident evil 4 in a different lens or resident evil 4 with a different flavour. Saying no it will affect the pacing is implying that its just going to be resident evil 4 original and adding these new things and changing stuff around will ruin it, well yeah obviously it would but this isnt resident evil 4. Its a remake so things are gonna be different.

Since he’s the last boss before you leave the village, it would work even better for you to survive him attacking you before t he big fight. Verdugo would be a great stalker for the castle, I don’t think I need to elaborate. And what if we got a new kind of Regenerator for the military base? Mr X is a far better stalker enemy than Jack Bakers. The main reason why is because Mr X can chase you in the entire RPD building besides the garage, and he chases you in a much longer part of the game, Jack Bakers on the other hand starts chasing you right before you’re about to go to the basement and he can’t go there. The only you go back to him before killing him is to get the shotgun and then you go kill him and its over.

Although RE4R doesn't need a Stalker and here's why RE4 Classic is a Remarkably Linear Game and judging by the first trailer the village looks really faithful to OG RE4 so a stalker just won't work. The reason why; Jack, Mr. X, Nemesis, Lady D & The Baby work as stalkers is because the Level Designs Are built for them and you to be in the same map. RE4 Classic as I said earlier is linear so having a ton of enemies to deal with whilst also dealing with a Stalker is just going to be a pain in the ass honestly. However a couple of missions built around the Hook Man Stalking Leon could be cool but those should be self contained kinda like out running a Regenerating Necromorph in Dead Space or The Scarecrow Missions in Batman Arkham Asylum.

Perhaps you block a door or retreat upstairs, suddenly a chainsaw revs up & cuts down the barricaded door & Dr. Salvador sees you & goes into this violent rage while yelling “I’m going to kill you” in Spanish before rushing at you with the chainsaw. We know from the original he is a tanky guy, so maybe shooting him in the face could stun him or piss him off more. If he loses sight of you he could flip out like Leatherface at the end of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre & runs off but the sounds of that chainsaw will be a constant reminder that he is always lurking.

I still remember when i got sandwiched by multiple zombies and her in the dining room, it was really intense. As a pressure point, additional consideration while planning your route, it was still a good addition to the game. Jack was on another level because in his sequences he's the only enemy the player is facing, so he needed to be menacing and pose actual danger. Mr.X had additional enemies around the map waiting for you so it was fine to make him almost useless by himself but deadly whenever the player is slowed down by something else. Dimitrescu was almost like Mr. X, the difference is really in the map itself and not the AI, the mansion isn't that big and there are not that many areas where you'll be caught in a bad position. My issue with Stalker enemy's is that once you figure out their tricks they pose no threat. Jack can have his attacks dodged with a crouch. Mr x cant ever catch up and if you run to a safe room he will just leave, same with Lady D. Also since stalkers are invincible and take lots of ammo to stun it makes you want to run to a safe room and when you are there you can just wait them out. It can also be a bit immersion breaking to see somebody like Lady D refuse to go into a room in her own house.
I think the best option for the future of this enemy type is rather than them losing interest when you enter a safe room, they still can come in and attack you, the only way to lose them should be to hide like in the baby boss from RE8 or to trap them temporarily behind a fallen bookshelf. Another idea is that you could lock doors behind you but it means if you find yourself on the other side again you will need to re-unlock it, which could mean a trip back to a box to retrieve the key.

Lady D's path was set in the castle. She walked in a square path. As long as you got out of it, she wouldn't chase you. She was super avoidable and boring for that reason as a pursuer. Jack Baker was the scariest. Hands down one of the best jump scares in RE7 is when you are about to leave the bathroom and he just walks right in and grabs you. He was very scary. Mr. X is still very scary as well, but you do get use to him after a while. Hands down, the first time you play RE2 Remake, Mr. X terrified me. He still puts me on edge. Nemesis was just so trivialized in the remake and predictable, that he was more of an annoyance which is sad because in the OG RE3, he was waaaaaaaaaay more threatening and random. I'm playing through the OG RE3 right now, and oh boy... he is a scary boi.

I think that while yes all 4 stalker characters are fairly similar on the fact that they..ya know stalk the player, their differences come from how they were intergrated into the concept of their games...
Jack Baker - yes his the most aggressive one besides nemesis (but nemesis is mostly scripted and never really stalks you autonomously) but jack only ever stalks you when his alone. Theres no enemies to deal with or navigate around while jack is in the area so it makes sense to have the only danger to the enemy at that moment be very threatening
Mr x is the opposite to this and personally my favourite. Yes mr x isnt as fast or aggressive as jack, especially jack on madhouse but mr x as a threat doesnt come from him alone, it comes from how he works as a presence in the station that switches up how the player navigates through it and deals with the other threats, zombies and lickers. A licker for instance that you ledt alive earlier to save good ammo and that you learnt to comfortably respond to by moving past it silently now becomes a dangerous variable. Those windows you forgot to bar up...those corridors are again a dangerous variable. You can decide to deal with these threats the same way you would in the past but what if mr x comes down...this is how jack and mr x are different to each other. Jack is an immeditate threat to either run away from or take head on, mr x is a wild card forcing you to adapt on the go or prepare in advance, both perfect for their respective games. I think its unfair to compare the two because of this.
Nemesis is just scripted and while a massive letdown works for how action oriented 3 was. Lady dimitrescu was the weakest but was also accompanied by the sisters which were more of a threat and treated lady d on her own as a threat again isnt fair when whenever she is on her own chasing you its either a short set piece or the last 2 mins of the castle before her boss fight after beating the last sister. Lady D works in the sense that 8 is a jack of all trades theme park ride through different gothic horror tropes and resident evil scenarios.
I think 4s best bet is to have a wild mash up of all 4 of these. Have moments where the stalkers alone chasing you aggressively like jack in a small area then ramp things up to an open area with enemies like mr x while you solve puzzles and things slow down then have a crazy nemesis style set piece where shits going down and then if it is true that have multiple stalker enemies have like a lady d and the daughters type scenario.
Maybe this is too much but considering resi 4 will more action oriented with more defensive or eveasive options still like r3make then the increase of pressure from stalker enemies i feel isnt an issue. Like you and other people have said nemesis felt to easy to dodge and avoid while too many complain about mr x being unfair. Having the ability to avoid and dodge these stalker enemies while increasing their aggression and variety of encounters would make things interesting if they are going to go down this route. Im for it but you wont please everyone.

I personally think Mr. X is the best, he feels genuinely intimidating when you first deal with him, his loud footsteps, his calm gait as he speed walks at you, and the complete lack of anything verbal makes him so imposing, and his stalking area is massive.
Jack gets a close second due to being Jack. His character is so great, he's definitely intimidating to deal with but has so much personality that it makes you uneasy, it's great. And in Madhouse he's always right on your heels. Overall, a fantastic stalker, and a fun one to boot.
Lady D gets #3, because while her design is really cool and she is arguably THE most imposing at 9 feet tall and having that massive hat that makes her seem larger, and I'm sure in VR that'll make her even more intimidating, she's also really easy to avoid, and personally, after the first encounter, didn't feel threatening to me. I can't think of any occasion where she killed me outside of her boss fight, and the few times her arrival were actually spooky is when you go through the same door as each other.
Last place is Nemesis, by a mile, and it's painful to say that since I loved him in RE3 OG, but he's a complete non issue in 3make, especially with the perfect dodge function and being able to down him immediately with grenades. His encounter areas are few and far between, and are generally very small areas. He barely registers as a stalker, he's more of a set piece.

I don't think Capcom has gotten lazy by making progressively worse stalker enemies. In fact, Capcom once mentioned that too many people got too scared because Jack Baker was too intelligent and fast. And Jack searches for you nonstop for a majority of the game. So Capcom is implying that they dumbed down the artificial intelligence of future stalkers in response to complaints. In my opinion, Jack is also my favorite, but on my first playtrough on normal difficulty, i was absolutely overwhelmed. I would stay hidden in one spot for long periods of time because i could hear jack somewhere nearby, eventually, i had two options, quit playing or face right through jack. I learned the hard way that i simply would have to run towards Jack especially when i was cornered. Hiding for too long means that progress through the game becomes too slow. So i could understand why many people couldn't complete the game because the A.i was too smart. Unfortunately though, every stalker enemy since, has only become more predictable, slow, and inferior in terms of artificial intelligence.

They just have to make sure whatever stalkers they do, they do them very well. It seems that the big cheese will become a stalker and I’d be fine with that as long as he’s not so oppressive that it’s hard to search for treasures. Stalkers are probably best as either being a very high threat in a smaller section of the game (Like Jack) or a lower threat but persistent throughout (Mr X). I like the idea of Dr. Salvador as a stalker enemy through out parts of the village but you have the ability to do enough damage to take him down temperarily and each time he re appears, he's more mutated than the last. Same goes for the Big Cheese being more of a stalker up until the final battle in the barn

if we’re gonna have MULTIPLE stalker enemies, i think it would be really cool for them to be Haunting Ground-style. they kind of evolve in difficulty as you go on, and each has unique attacks and ways for you to slow them down or escape. they also each have their own boss fight that forces you to think differently, and i think that’s really cool

But then again I jump scare easily. Would of been nice if most of his encounters were scripted, he always caught up to me when I’m in a small room scavenging for ammo or keys. (Especially the small storage room where you get the crank in the OG PS1 RE2 game)

I'm really looking forward to how they make Dr. Salvador a stalker enemy. Here's how I'm imagining him:
Voice: Dr. Salvador speaks spanish, sure. But perhaps they'll give him english dialog lines for when he's aware the player can hear him. Perhaps broken english with bad grammar and cussing. Commenting on your state (health, ammo, whether you are retreating, holding ground, missing shots, collecting items), commenting on his state (whether he knows where you are, whether he spotted you, when he takes damage, when he's low health). Makes fun of you, teases that he's coming for your girlfriend (Ashley), mocking Leon's reactions, swearing in frustration when he can't find you, getting enraged when his health is low.
    Sound:
    - The idling chainsaw engine when he's searching for you.
    - Revving the chainsaw at random times to provoke you from coming out of hiding or breaking your stealth.
    - Revving the chainsaw repeatedly as a show of force when he charges at you, doing so more agressively as he anticipates the kill.
    Actions:
    - When you're low on health, he "plays with his food" so to speak. Shuts off the chainsaw and sneaks around to ambush you. Doesn't always kill you if you're in range, might just mock your fear and hold the chainsaw in your face as he revs it, inflicting less-than-lethal wounds intentionally. He grabs weaker ganados and tosses them at you to fight one on one for entertainment (which you can choose to ignore as normal).
    - When he's low on health, he's like "oh, it's going down now" and loses composure. Runs faster, starts attacking things randomly like Super Salvador, more likely to charge at the player, possibly falling over edges. Revs the chainsaw louder, breathes more heavily, making his location more obvious.
    - These two together could act like dynamic difficulty somewhat.
    - Starts attacking random objects (hiding spots, doors, door blocking objects, other ganados) when he's frustrated.
    - Kills and wounds from Dr. Salvador must be graphic and disturbing to watch. Part of the fear in RE4 was not wanting to see what would happen if he caught you. If it wasn't traumatizing (like in RE5) then the fear would disappear.
    - 1-hit kills must always be a concern. If you can think "maybe this time he'll let me live" you'll be more willing to risk getting close. But if you just get unlucky, you'll just get mad at RNG and keep grinding until you do get lucky. Whether he's going to insta kill or just torment you should be readable.
    - Aiming the gun at his head for a crit should cause him to take the situation more seriously, i.e. he stops "playing with his food" to teach you a lesson, perhaps provoking an instakill.

Mr X and nemesis are arguably the most iconic enemies from their respective games. Stalker enemies aren't there to make you rush through the game. They're there to add tension to environments you'll be spending a lot of time in. They push you off objectives causing you to either waste ammo or try to lose them. Most of them aren't there 100% of the time so you can take your time in the environments after they leave or before they appear. I think they just need to be implemented well. Lady D is the weakest by design but nemesis in the remake was just done dirty. No tension just poof he's there

baker makes most sense. but the lady is a chaser for a whole nother reason (modding community). i'd say, she should've had more interaction, and only maybe one scene where she chases you with her daughter or max twice.
maybe she should've been after the fish and puppet as an enemy, so she could've had a bit more dialogue that would bloom out her character.
even her form. she's a freakng dragon, that sounds like last bossfight before the boss fight.

With game-makers and publishers building almost all of their games with multiple console platforms in mind, it's worth remembering that things used to be very, very different. Titles used to launch on bespoke arcade platforms before being ported to home consoles, and when hardware like the original PlayStation arrived, titles were specifically built around its strengths. Direct ports to other systems rarely worked owing to massive hardware differences, with some developers opting to create entirely new games instead. But when it came to the N64 port of Resident Evil 2, Angel Studios - now Rockstar San Diego - went for a different approach. It aimed to overcome the N64's most profound limitations, delivering an uncannily accurate port of the original PlayStation release.
On the face of it, an N64 conversion of Resident Evil 2 shouldn't be a problem. After all, at the nuts and bolts level, the action consists of fairly simple 3D characters and objects overlaid on a series of pre-rendered 2D backdrops. An invisible mesh creates the boundaries of the 3D space, ensuring that the characters sit correctly within the environments, while moving through the levels is achieved simply by flipping from one screen to the next once you hit the boundary - there's no scrolling here.
But what sounds simple in theory becomes massively more complex when you look at the implementation. Resident Evil 2 for PlayStation shipped on two CDs. It's true that there's commonality is some of the data between the two discs, but the bottom line is that just one CD offers Capcom the luxury of 700MB of storage. That's plenty for the game's 2D backgrounds, its 15 minutes of full-motion video plus its 200 minutes of sample-driven soundtrack - on top of other in-game audio, including character voices. The N64 version has to somehow contain all of this data within one 64MB cartridge - less than 10 per cent of the storage available on one of Resident Evil 2's CDs. Additionally, even if the storage situation could be resolved, N64 doesn't have any hardware-accelerated video decompression - something Capcom utilised extensively in the PlayStation game.

I definitely hope Dr. Salvador isn't a stalker enemy type (He'd make a fine mini-boss who lurks around the village area but never re-appears after you kill him). Treat him more like a one-and-done version of The Evil Within's Sadist. U-3 should similarly be kept as a boss fight, players would definitely grow tired of him if he continually returned with new mutations to chase Leon.
Even Hookman, I think should be relegated to only stalk you during one level where the context for his appearance makes sense. Ex- A level with something in the air (maybe the castle underground) that affects the Plagas inside Leon, making him see/hear/feel things that aren't real. Thus, he must find a path back to the surface before the stress from the visions kills him.
The sequence could be sort of like RE 8's House Beneviento with Ethan hallucinating the infamous baby (Just don't give Hookman an insta-kill move for if he catches you, that mechanic is generally more frustrating than scary in my opinion and wears out its welcome fast). Likewise, I think Regenerators would work best if they remain exclusive to the laboratory levels.
The best candidate for a recurring stalker enemy would likely be Bitores Mendez. If done well, he can satisfy the conditions of horror factor, pursuit efficiency, and mechanics. With a competently programmed adaptive A.I., he could potentially work to the same success as Alien: Isolation's Xenomorph, appearing three times (each in a new form) before finally dying.
His concept combines the imposing stature of Mr. X & Nemesis with a brooding personality that could be expanded with sinister dialogue to give him more character (Essentially, just make him a taller, Spanish speaking Jack Baker). To keep him from getting repetitive, each new mutation he appears in should change up the dynamics of both chasing and fighting.
His appearances wouldn't all be scripted, but I wouldn't randomize him to the point that he can appear literally almost anywhere at any time in the story. Realistically, that would be too ambitious and his mechanics wouldn't lend themselves as well to certain environments. I'd compromise, limiting him to one main area per appearance but letting his A.I. move freely.
The game would learn how you play, adjusting Mendez's A.I. according not only to the surroundings or form he's in but also to your strategy up to that point. Ex- If you had Leon jump into dumpsters a lot previously, then the Mendez in your playthrough will look through and/or destroy dumpsters in the next encounter. This would increase both tension and replayability.
Every stalking sequence would shake things up with obstacles that make it harder to keep him off your scent, as his different mutations allow for expanded abilities. He'd start off relatively easier to sneak around, only busting through doors & walls and throwing foes (dead or alive) at you. By his final mutation, he'd be significantly stronger and more relentless.
Fighting & hiding from him should become like a survival-horror Chess game, pushing players to re-think their approach. He'd get more aggressive, eventually starting to tear entire roofs off of small structures you hide in, throw explosives, sense you through walls at close range, etc. Every form would also have new weaknesses, each tougher to exploit than the last.
The best comparison I can make off the top of my head would be Mr. Freeze's boss fight in Batman: Arkham City. Imagine stretching that battle across three different fights. While Mendez wouldn't change tactics at the same pace every time you land a hit, you'd have to learn how to get around every new defense & attack, observing and setting up openings to do damage.
Of course, by New Game+ when you've unlocked the best stuff, you could defeat him with less effort. But the first playthrough, as intended, would keep you on your toes, every encounter ideally feeling fresh and leaving you in suspense. Players should be wondering at every chase's conclusion "How many more times will he return? When? Where? How will he mutate next?"
Mr. X, William Birkin, Nemesis, Ustanak and Jack all succeeded at this to varying degrees, but Mendez must be more balanced on the spectrum of extremes. His forms shouldn't get as over-the-top as Nemesis (especially in the remake), nor should they all be a one-trick pony whose patterns you can quickly figure out. He needs to be more sophisticated overall than past stalkers.

the perfect stalker enemy was the original nemesis , being able to chase you anywhere was scary, but what made it perfect was being able to take him down each time, and him staying gone for awhile after that, and also getting special rewards for it,
the next best/least annoying one for me was in dead space,
a lot of those other's were just annoying, especially X,
because you can so easily break them by running into safe room's ,
but x was just annoying all around,
but if they do a stalker, I hope they make it where you can take them down, and they stay gone for awhile, and you get really good rewards for it,
I really hope they don't cut a ton of content this time, like they did with 3, an 2,
so much got cut from both of them,
we should get more in a remake not less,
so hopefully there is a lot more enemy types, weapons, unique new bosses, stuff like that,
and hopefully they don't over do it with the stalker because I like to search areas good before leaving them,

i think instead of a stalker like the big cheese they should focus on the chainsaw sisters since i found them terrifying imagine being in a tight space with two crazy ladies laughing their heads off whilst taunting you as they try to cut your head off. the only issue is the in my opinion the awful block mechanic which will take the fear away the second Leon blocks an attack
