Yeah ive heard that one too. Literally the first thing your elbow does is go down now creating a farther distance to get to the ball.

Personally, what still to this day works for me was the thought - Down to level ... That's what resets my bat path, down to the ball for tee work and flips, but down and through the ball is what got my full swing to work. What also helped was my plate approach; looked outside to drive it to the oppo gap, reacted on the pitch inside and trust my hands. It serves me well.

Can’t even say Bonds’ name without some kind of qualification first (“regardless of what you think about him”). It is insane to me that people can’t even acknowledge he has one of the best, most fearsome swings of all time without getting at least a little wound up first. Silly

I get your points. My son did the drill and it gave him the feel for a better bat path. He felt the difference in the extremes. He doesnt think swing down or up. He just knows the feeling of a an optimal swing that produces allot more line drive. Before this drill he was struggling like crazy making solid contact consistently. Great channel. Thanks
Great analysis of Bonds' swing. Much needed because what Bonds and Arod teach seems counter intuitive because they preach 'swinging down' but don't mention how the barrell eventually gets on plane with their swing. This is the best hitting theory video I've seen in a while.

Yo! This is GOLD MY MAN! I love the fact that you brought up the most important fact of coaching; if you can’t teach the athlete the right thing. Nothing else matters. Teach the bad out and replace with good. Awesome stuff man keep it coming.
Imagine how good some player 30 year old player will be in 15-20 years after proper coaching, watching slow motion videos of his swing and looking at all the information available.
This is really good advice. I never bought it on the swing down mantra. It just didn’t make sense to me. When coaching my son from the very beginning, I used Albert Belle’s swing as the model for my son’s swing and I used drawing a bow as the visual image for the set up, hands not too high because the swing path would not be in the same plane as the incoming pitch. I emphasized impact point where the bat and ball meet. Visualize how you want the body and the bat to be at the impact point and practice getting the bat to that point with the body and hands in the perfect position. Then work the swing backwards from that point to the ready position. Practice getting from the ready position to the perfect impact position over and over. You will soon come to the realization that you can’t get to the perfect impact position by chopping down on the ball. The swing path and the impact position only intersect for a brief moment it time. You can’t effectively hit the ball with the swing-down path. If you watch BarryBonds swing, he started with his hands held low, raised them slightly and swung forward along a slight arch, but very much in the same plane as the incoming ball. I think Albert Belle did that more efficiently than others which is why I taught that to my son. Barry Bonds did it more effectively than anybody else, but his hitting was freakishly good. The best ever.
If you hit down on the ball your bat is only on the plane of the ball for a microsecond.
Great stuff as always. Saying one thing to everyone is cookie cutter, and like you said everyone is different and it’s part of the coaches job to communicate what they want to each individual. Love it 👍👍👍👍

My son was striking out every at bat a few years ago. Took some video and he was dipping, so I told him to chop (swing down) and his next at bat was a pop fly to center field. My son just needed to use the swing down for a couple of at bats to get rid of the dipping. My son started hitting again as the dipping stopped, but he also wasn't chopping, he was thinking more get on plane with the ball. Seems like the bottom line is analyze your swing, make adjustments, then just swing it. Good stuff Mr. Antonelli
If by "dipping" you mean dropping the back shoulder-every MLB drops the back shoulder. No reason to believe me but I encourage you to pick a player and watch them in slow motion on youtube.
@@danmeier9645 Good day, not so much dropping the back shoulder, but more dropping (dipping ) the bat head too much. When he did the chop thing for a short time, the bat head stopped going so low.
@@loveofthegame4395 Make sure he is starting with the bat behind his head and leading it with his hips, then hands, then bat head last. Put a hula hoop around him right under the bat with it angled to the point of contact. Hands and bat should follow the hula hoop.

My daughter is hitting more doubles than ever and has a bomb this season thanks to your punching bag drill. She had bat drag so bad last year that it created the world's most level swing and that resulted in nothing but grounders. We focus on her bat path going slightly up for gap shots now. Thanks Matt.

U are 1000% correct Matf!!! Guy’s like Barry and myself think swing down but we are thinking about just our hands not the bat… the other way with getting the bat rearward like Aaron J is thinking about the bat itself. It’s just 2 different mindsets is all that it is… like u said, every player is different…
This is great stuff Matt. Your personal experience certainly explains why you teach and word things the way you do. Like you’ve said before, everyone is different. Many hitters think “swing down “, “buckle the seat belt” ect... And that gets their bat path behind the ball. Some think swing down and that doesn’t get their bat behind the ball. However I do think that for the majority of hitters (Not All) a “staying on top” mentality works best. I do see some young hitters swinging to steep of a downward angle. But not many. The biggest flaw I see is “losing the barrel” and swinging under the ball leading to tons of pop ups and strikeouts. JMO

I think I know why it works for some but not others. It depends on what specifically you mind is focused on moving while you swing. If its focused on where your hands are moving then swing down will work because the hands do need to work down in order to get the bat on the right path. However if the mind is focused on the movement of the barrel of the bat, then swing down will not work because you will literally just swing the bat straight down and never get it on the right bat path. Again, if your feel is in your hands this drill could work. But if your feel is in the barrel of the bat it won't work. Hope that makes sense.

Bro you explained it perfectly. What people don't realize is that bat speed starts behind you not in front of you and that no matter what you do throwing fielding or hitting you are always behind the baseball because you cannot get in front of a round object because there is no front. Man l would love to come see you and talk about hitting. I teach hitting myself and l know how you feel when teaching something that even MLB players have a hard time explaining what is feel vs real. Keep up the good work my friend trust me when l teach my guys and there eyes light up on a pissed ball l always tell them this... You know I know you think I'm crazy. The guys that truly understand the baseball swing people are going to think your crazy because you know what a good swing "feels" like and they dont so all we have to do is teach kids what's real. If you get a chance check out the video on UA-cam Every homerun Barry Bonds hit in his career and you will notice that every homerun he hit his top hand finished underneath his armpit for his whole career. This is what Barry Bonds means by swinging down its keeping your top hand down thru your legs because your lead arm is already set to go up. That's why Tony Gwynn video Hitting 101 everybody should watch. The small weight " The Knob" moves the big weight" The Barrell" and is the reason why Bonds Sam Bat knob was so big.

I’m watching your video before I see the Yelich video.. LOL
A coach I had balanced this somewhat by telling me to swing down on the ball, but to get my top palm facing up at impact. Swing down, palm up. I still sucked, but it did help!
That drill is also a good one for kids to get the feel of hitting the ball with proper hand position. I've fixed many a roll-over swinger with this one.
I would also like to point out that “hands to the ball” is not the same as barrel to the ball. I believe if you look at slow motion video of most high level hitters it will show that for the most part the hands (knob) go straight to the ball. But the barrel makes a looping motion getting behind the ball.

Has anyone tried holding the bat with the knob already turned at a 45 degree angle to the pitcher side instead of the catcher side?

Coaching cues work differently on different athletes. Getting to know and understand individual athletes and effective communication between coach and athletes is really the start of true progress. It's a universal fact for all aspects of life that people do not grasp in part or at all.
Every swing eventually has to go up. You want to hit the ball out in front of the plate at the exact moment your bat starts to move upward after swinging down. While keeping your weight back.

I get what he’s saying here and I’ve had discussions about the knob to the ball, swing down idea many times. There’s something to those ques that work but I don’t know what part of the good swing those ques become something else in the swing path that is successful. Obviously balance and timing are huge components too.
What made Griffey Jr's swing so good? It's all anyone ever seemed to talk about when we where kids.
The thing is you finish different with your hands regardless of what the barrel does. His hands work down and through yours turn right away and work up. The barrel also gets extended further out front his way versus the teacherman stuff your talking about.
Swing down was never explained in a way that made sense to me
This is another thing that proof that Barry was just that good. He helped Yelich adjust his swing and now if it wasn’t because of the injury, he could just won back to back mpv awards, and is probably todays best hitter.

Records are made to be broken, not stolen, Legends and hero's are our examples, it is very hard if not impossible to see cheaters, who used steroids, and played with guys who did not and would not, no matter what talent they had, for we will never know what they could have done,and would have done, had they played honestly with the real talent they had, and they will never know themselves, and now they and we are forced to live with that what might have been.
The tough thing when using Bonds, Trout, Puljos, Williams, etc. when examining a drill, technique, or swing mechanics, they are some of the greatest of all time. One thing they all talk about is having a short, direct path to the ball That's what we hear, and probably take too literally. They either consciously or subconsciously seamlessly integrated that technique with the rest of the parts of the swing - posture, balance, lower body to upper body separation, or "staying connected". They also manipulated those components at their will to make adjustments, but a short, direct path is always their starting point. "Swinging down" looks very different when put into context with all aspects of swing mechanics. Feal vs. Real.

I thought u with my hands
I coach young players and will tie a string from "pitchers mound" to home plate. Then use that as a reference for their bat path. Along with back elbow down into back hip hard, and pointing knob of bat at pitcher. Then have them run bat along top of string thru their swing. This helps them understand keeping bat in zone as long as possible and to have a swing that closely matches path of ball coming in. I use this to keep them from over rotating shoulders and swinging up so much that they reduce amount of time bat is in zone. Just my thoughts

Right on, Matt, JOE JACKSON, (shoeless), near as I can figure, from watching the few, videos I could find, flattened out his bat, let the bat slide off and down his back shoulder, kind of lining his bat with both shoulders as he stepped forward and and turned on the ball, both Cobb, and Ruth said he was the greatest hitter in the game,and he lined and hit hard, and homered in his brief career
I wish this had been explained to me in college.
I've seen a kid do this & swing down on the ball. At times the player would be too steep & just pop the ball up. When he connected however the ball was hammered & would carry forever.
Feel vs real is such a hard thing for older ball players to understand. A Rods hitting video was so funny when you actually watched his swing
You should do a series analyzing swings of former major leaguers that could have been superstars if they had made adjustments. Start with Dave 'King Kong' Kingman, please.
Bonds' swing may have been knob and hands down to the ball but the barrel naturally came up after his forward tilt of shoulders and chest tilted over the plate transitioned into backwards tilt of shoulders and extension of his spine upwards. The bat barrel had choice but to rise after passing the midpoint of the barrel's pendulum path. Bonds' swing is easy to teach and replicate.
You make good points. One of the most annoying things about baseball are these laws that have been passed down generation after generation and nobody has questioned them until recently. Yeah they work great for some players, but not everyone. If they worked for everybody any kid who could be coached would turn into a big leaguer and that ain't the case. Coaching is tough.

Good video, 10 out of 10.
You were probably taught at an early age how to stay back and let the ball get deep. For the rest of use who were not gifted that ancient knowledge at an early age, Bonds thought process of hitting the ball off the plate, can make someone who lunges at the ball, suddenly feel what it's like to let the ball get deep and for these people, thinking swing down keeps them waiting for the ball.

Thinking back on Ichiro's swing, it really looked like he was chopping at the ball and he was a base hitting machine.
Many of his hits were groundballs though. He was intentionally trying to hit the ball down so swinging down makes sense for that. For everyone else who isnt Ichiro, the swing down method seems real dumb.
It’s about what each player wants to accomplish. Gwynn said he could hit 30 HR (I believe him), but wouldn’t be hitting near the average he had. On Ichiro, he hit BOMBS in BP. But, if he did it in games, he wouldn’t be “Ichiro.”

i've had the exact same experience, my old coach told me swing down on the ball regardless of what i did, so swung down and struck out, grounded out whatever. This year we got a new coach ad he explained to me get the bat behind the ball so "magically" i can hit again. Never will i go 0 for 4 again xD
I never played ball past the age of 12 but I absolutely hear what you're saying. And I think A-Rod swing is the absolute best from start to finish at going through that motion in creating that back spin. And I can totally hear how you're trying to explain it and how Yelich is explaining it. As Barry got older I think his swing got a lot shorter but you can still see the acorn of that motion in creating that back spin it isn't as pronounced as A-Rod's was though.

Barry taught Yelich to swing down, but he fixed the chopping by progressing the chop to liners. For you it seemed they didn't even explain why you were doing the chopping or what the final result of your swing should be! Also maybe you were overthinking it. Bauer posted a great video about mindset in a game a couple of days ago.
Whatever drill you like; upswing level or downswing...listen to great coaches and hit the middle of the ball.
