The HVAC ties in with the solar roof in that in a typical home it's the most energy intensive activity so if you can sell people a more efficient HVAC you can make them happier with your solar roof product at the same time.

We love our two PW2's complementing our 13.2 kWh solar PV system. They enable us to operate our all electric home independent of the grid for ~9 months of the year in Edmonds, WA. Agree that they would sell a ton of them if battery costs come down, but I waited almost three years to get our PW2 installation in 2018, so demand is already there for many folks.

About the $7k PowerWall, it cost $8k to add a 16 kW, Generac emergency generator. I sized it to handle not only the house but also charge our EVs.
In April 2011, tornadoes wiped out the TVA transmission lines and we had 4.5 days without grid power. At the time, I had a 1.1 kW inverter in our 2003 Prius which allowed us to 'camp out at home' for 2 gallons per day.

At my age I think it can only be a pipe dream just like I seen watching the moon landings. I remember how the future seemed so near to becoming real. So I have become reservedly excited that maybe this time it could become real. In Elon I am slowly trusting more. I hope he lives long enough to fulfill his dreams on changing human kind to get past possible extinction. The urgency is real but too many folks pretend we are safe, this is where Elon's fear's are correct. I see it as far worse than most people. I'm not fearful, But I must express more urgency in getting to Mars.

Good points on the Powerwall from Omar. Even with incentives the Powerwall is difficult to show ROI on. SoCal Edison doesn't allow you to subvert peak billing periods by charging at lower rates. It's only for storing excess solar energy. But at $2k per pack the ROI for even a backup battery storage solution is easier to justify.

Great show! Have knowledgeable Tesla people questioning other knowledgeable Tesla/financial persons (eg Rob, Munro and of course Elon) is very powerful. It’s also unprecedented when you think of it. Even ignoring all of the many, other benefits of Tesla’s incredible cars, having these video discussions adds tremendous value to these vehicles. I have a question for you guys too: what is the direct economic implications of the supercharging network? Does it generate revenue or is it an expense? How much? Obviously it’s a critical asset in encouraging sales of the cars. Thx!

    • @ThirdRowTesla

As a follow-up to one of my comments from yesterday, just saw a statistic in the European online magazine, Euronews. 76•6% of all freight in Europe goes by road. This is why I think that Tesla will commence Semi production much sooner than anybody expects despite Elon's assertion that Giga 4 will be for Y & I'd also hazard a guess, 3.
Don't know about anybody else, but to me Battery Investor Day will be THE most exciting news to come out of Tesla in 2020 since pretty much everything else will be heavily impacted by its contents. Not even the location of Giga 5 will compare since all of Tesla's battery development & planning once again, directly underpins how well production levels & expansion grow.

What about when Tesla Insurance is in more states in USA? Flordia is supposed to see it in 3 to 6 months. That should be a huge amount of extra cash, especially when they can do HVAC and offer homeowners insurance on homes they put Powerwalls and Solar Roof on.
I have Unlimited Supercharging, but wonder how much do they get every month on average when people are driving more before and after these stay at home orders.
I am unclear on Model X and S. Hoping they refresh the interior to a larger center screen and possibly a very good heads up display. I feel Tesla needs to only refresh and update them and they'll sell good.
Also, I think Model 3 should come in estate/shooting brake/station wagon, coupe, and convertible versions. Also add some more exterior and interior colors.

Regarding powerwalls. In the Netherlands we get payed the same amount of money for delivery of energy to the grid as we have to pay for sourcing energy from the grid. So a powerwall is not really interesting. However, in 2023, the amount of money, per kWh, we get payed for enery is going down tremendously. In stead of €0,23/KWh we will get only €0,07/KWh. If the price of the powerwall would go down to like €3000 it would make the ROI for a powerwall go below 10 years (with projected €1500 installation cost, based on a 3000KW generated by our solarpanels). This would be very interesting . My investment in our solarpanels was payed back in 6,5 years.

Part of why Tesla is doing HVAC is probably that they are really good at temeperature management in their battery packs. In fact, temperature management is a big reason for why their cars have the range that they have. That technological experience will likely help them when they try to move into the HVAC market.
Integration with their cars and usefulness on mars are nice motivators for doing so, of course.

Why the energy business isn't there yet: The car business is paramount, because it's not just driving Tesla it's also forcing everyone else to put out more EVs. It's basically a lever for the 'mission' that is much stronger than going out and doing energy business. On the other hand more EVs on the road (Tesla or other) will drive demand for home solar and home battery storage. So again a lever for future business of Tesla (and other solar and home battery manufacturers). 'Peaker plant' battery storage is good for PR - but not the main focus right now.
Once they have a lot of solar roofs out there Tesla could start becoming its own utilities provider by letting them act as one, huge virtual powerplant. Then these big battery buffer installations will make a lot of sense

if model Y is 80% same parts as model 3, it should be no surprise to anybody that margin is so high from beginning. Capex was paid by model 3. Build on the same line, by mostly the same equipment. Smart move to keep VT low, but you can't double your production numbers. Most limitations are usually body shop and paint shop. Can't imagine that casting machine is really fast. Need to wait for second one to get those output numbers going up nicely. Giga Berlin will be much more efficient. Looking forward to it.

Great discussion. Musk is doing a great job with Tesla / SpaceX. But SolarCity is just another solar company , not disrupting the market. And the solar cell tile will not be “the” product unfortunately. SolarCity should focus on energy management and just use existing module manufacturers. Tesla AC , Tesla home battery , and energy management should be the focus. Once that is perfected, then look at solar modules (solar production ). I am open for a management position to help SolarCity become a market leader ;)

Have long thought that Giga 2 needs its own cell production line. Would go a long way to reducing cell production constraints for vehicles (present & future), increase gross margin per cell due elimination of transportation to Buffalo for final assembly of Powerwalls, Powerpacks, Megapacks & be in line with Tesla's vertical integration philosophy.
Also feel that the importance/impact of the Semi's is vastly underrated. Assuming Tesla hits the nail on the head with them performance wise, & no reason to suspect otherwise, Tesla will have trouble keeping up with demand. Not only will we see new USA Giga 5, pump them out like sweeties, but Giga 4 is likely to produce them also; much sooner than anyone suspects. EU zero emissions goals & current regs will play a huge role in this + economics of EV trucking just makes sense. Let's not forget how popular they'd be in China, especially with the government.

Salient point on CAGR. I don't know how you could dismiss this stock or Tesla's influence on the world based on this metric alone. Boom!

Hornsdale & projects like it are going to be important but in the longer term, smart grids/virtual power plants (☀️panels + 🔋) when coupled with the likes of Tesla's Autobidder software will ultimately play a larger role; in part because there's no acquisition of land, facilities or infrastructure required. It will all be installed in homes & businesses (installation =additional revenue stream in & of itself) & they're grid connected from the start, i.e. already existing infrastructure.
If you look at Tesla's virtual power plant currently being developed in Australia, despite being in its relative infancy, you can see what I've referenced already having had huge success. Rob's mention of V to G could potentially play a role in this.
