#LOUISCOLE #DRUMS #BUDDYRICH
Louis is so much more normal than his music led me to believe he’d be. What a nice, humble dude.
anyone can be whoever they want/need to be in any given circumstances
@@BennyboyTruth no they can't
@@gickygackers Louis is a great showman and puts on fantastic acts to entertain his audiences. After seeing him being "normal" here, you'd never know that he's also Clowncore.
@@BennyboyTruth Is that actually confirmed?? (Clowncore that is)
@@cooldebt go watch clown core and tell me it’s not Louis Cole
I love Louis Cole
COMPLETELY unrelated but I also love the band Clown Core
TIL Louis is rumored to be the drummer, thanks
@@spctcl_ nope NOT RELATED AT ALL you’re mistaken
yes. totally unrelated... 👀
We all do! 👍😍👍
23:39 is the clown core technique, the kick-synced left hand is just applied to a keyboard bass note instead. Cool stuff
Louis cole and jd beck are huge inspirations for me. Bring jd beck and domi on the show!
that would be so cool
Yes!
Yessss
Omg yes what a good idea
This
Can we just get a Jack, Ryan, and Louis show? The friend chemistry is crazy. I could listen to you all talk about music for hours.
Agreed, 100%. This would be a sick podcast with all sorts of guests… Sick 🤘
Yeah for real it's so cool to have them all relaxed and throwing banther ;D
I back this👑👑
Me too :)
Agreed. I just found Louis and now these two. I am so excited.
LC's sense of HUMOUR is not celebrated enough. ALL the text overlays in every one of his videos are fantastic!
Louis Cole is on another level, with the drums and the jokes
And I love how he says "Fonky".
Yes exactly
He is the coolest fuckin guy
Such an awesome friendly dude, that's willing to help fellow musicians regardless off skill. Just a good human being, but approaching legendary status eventually. Just listen to his influence on JD.
The same sprit inhabits both (musical knowledge & jokes)
19:47 Jack: "Can you blow our minds for a minute?"
Louis Cole: "Sure"
That was so awesome. Rock solid DnB rhythm at like 190bpm
I've been playing drums more than 50 years. I love how Louis embraced his heroes and plays the way he wants. When I was a kid, everyone always tried to get me to stop playing so busy. He's like, "I'll do what I want. This is how I play."
Exactly! Imitate and break down what you like best, and develop into the drummer you want to be, not someone else's idea of a drummer. You never stop learning, that's the beauty of drumming. If every drummer stuck to rigid structure and the rule book, drumming would never have evolved as it has done.
What bothers me about Louis is how he’s mainly a drummer, yet can play the keys so well that it makes me, a classically trained pianist, look like a novice. Amazing musician.
Keys are technically still percussion 😉
@@kobe1902 that doesn’t really mean much. It’s not like drums carry over much to keyboard/piano
@@aidanschram9652 rhythm is literally half of all instruments. It certainly transfers over. But what i was saying was tongue in cheek.
@@aidanschram9652 Chick Corea had a way of thinking liek that - fingers are ten drummers, as he said. He played drums too. Not saying its the same, just that on the level of those dudesit is all music.
@@troubleboy Yes but chick is a pianist who translates his piano skills to drums. I’m talking about drummers who take up piano. There is the independence factor and a little bit of finger technique that translates over as well as rhythmic phrasing, but it’s hard to play piano if you don’t know any music theory and have no experience with playing melodic instruments.
This has to be one of the best interviews with a musician EVER. It felt not only extremely educational, but someone’s brain with extremely valuable knowledge was picked at a very human level. It felt like my takeaway had just as much motivation in relatability as it did inspiration in looking up to a respected drummer.
‘He sleeps with a metronome under his pillow”, sounds 100% like a Jack Stratton improv~ So great having Louis on the channel, thank you guys!
Nice to discover that there's an actual working jazz drummer outside Holywood fantasy who likes Buddy Rich.
"i am not designed to play drums..." he says that casually while being one of the best drummers i know of.
Louis Cole is the nicest guy I’ve met and one of my favorite modern musicians. I’ll never forget the NYC show when he invited me to another secret show at a different club. What an awesome human being.
Secret show, eh? Did that show happen to have a different headliner, perhaps masked performers~?
I want a t-shirt that says "I agree with Thundercat"
Hearing Louis Cole made me pick up the drums again after a few years away. He made me want to fail in a cooler way, too! The joy he plays with is infectious.
Only 8 min into the episode and I already love it.
Louis is able to give a fine balance between playing and talking, during the conversation. I mean, he doesn't talk too much while leaving us wanting to hear some drum playing, and at the same time he plays just enough to make a point on what he's talking about. Amazing!
I think you two talking with Louis is another case for a potential podcast. I could listen to the three of you talk for hours.
💯 Even if a lot of it is over my head 🤭
Louis always has such a stoic straight faced vibe in all his content that I clicked the video simply because of that big genuine smile in the thumbnail.
I know about Louis Cole from -definitely not ClownC0re- and it's so cool to see him here!
People theorize that Cole is the anonymous drummer of Clown Core and now hearing that he likes to put a cymbal on his snare, just like the dude in Clown Core does, has me convinced. Also because they are both insanely talented.
Nope. The clown is just a clown. There is no human under the mask.
Truth. That beat immediately reminded of one of their tracks, it just needed a bit faster with that weird bass synth over it and a more swingy feel
Oh yes! More Louis Cole! It really feels like a group of friends just having fun
Y’all should bring more drummers but also bring a drummer to ask questions and discuss as well. Drumming is so different than any other instrument, it would really help to have drummers ask drummer questions.
Yep. Exactly my thought. They are amazed by things that are considered standard technique with many professional drummers.
yeah, Louis is the Man! And love Genevieve too. Knower was one of the bands I showed to all my musician friends, and they loved it!
It's so interesting and fun hearing three detail-obsessed musicians talking about the real subtle stuff: micro-timing, little variations in grip of stick or pick, Louis's thing about sleeping with a metronome under his pillow 😂 And I'm sitting here pretty much unable to hear the timing differences in the samples they're talking about. They really are on another level, and I love the enthusiasm with which they geek out about it.
lol, "I'm dead inside", haha, Legend.
My son introduced me to Louis Cole’s music a few years ago and I became a fan from the very first note.
31:20, that's not Jojo Mayer, that's Diego Piñera lol
I noticed that they overcorrected a little and cut the entire Jojo part out of the video, that's a shame...
This video got me back on my drum kit for the first time in months. I've been in a really hard slump music-wise this year, so to be reminded of just how *fun* playing and writing music is - that's pretty amazing. Thanks, y'all ❤️
Wow, you lived together in college? The amount of raw talent in this group of friends is staggering.. Scary pockets, Louis Cole, Moonchild, Sam Wilkes, Jacob Mann... And that's just the tip of the iceberg
18:50 so glad that I wasn't the only one that spent lockdown doing this. I went as far as filming my picking in slow motion which was a whole rabbit hole to go down.
Lol, I didn’t exactly do it during the lockdown but it’s certainly a topic visited multiple times in my playing. I’ve kind of switched from a more anchored to floating picking hand technique, but every time I visit “how to hold the pick” the result is always “how most guitarists seem to hold their pick does not work AT ALL for me”. I don’t know if it’s true but many seem to hold the pick against like the first or second joint of their index finger? (I hold it against the fingertip more.) I just can’t do that. Maybe it has advantages, maybe not. Either way it’s way too late and not worth it to change at this point I feel.
I do alter my grip when strumming compared to picking single notes too… but that’s something I’ve been doing for a long time too which I wasn’t even aware of doing until recently so can’t really tell if good or bad. 😅
I loved this one so much! After referencing the Live Sesh stuff: how about the incredible bassist, Sam Wilkes? He's so damn good!
+1 to that! Actually bring on both Sams! And Rai and Genevieve!!
YESS
That whole band absolutely rips like every player is god tier
Louis Cole, is on an entirely new level... As a bassist, I marvel at the way he subdivides time, and HOW he plays. An incredible musician.
Louis Cole is a massive inspiration to me. He’s one of the few open handed drummers that are well known which I always thought was awesome because I’m also open handed! It was really cool to hear where his inspirations came from
I will be using "THREE DIMENSIONAL MEAT SUIT" from this point forwards in my existence.
Bro what a chill guy.. I imagine it's so cool hanging with the entire band
Man I love hearing this guy talk about Buddy Rich.
Mostly because of my old high school band teacher (shout out Mr. Vespa!) I associate Buddy Rich with Gene Krupa and I would love an episode about him and old-ass drums.
That era is so cool to me because the drum set had just barely been invented yet people were absolute rippers even by modern standards
I mean... drum sets were barely around since like the 1890s. But yeah I think it started with crazy snare work and then branched out. There were a few ragtime drummers who got recorded. Check out Buddy Gilmore with I think the James Reese Europe band.
yessssss another one with louis!!
Just discovered this. Amazing series. Hope you keep it up! Thanks🙏
Louis Cole just always looks like he's *ready.* He's just always *ready* at all times.
Louis is so chill and enjoyable to listen to!
The thing that really struck me about him is how humble he is, especially considering his enormous, multifaceted talent.
Also, I just love this guy's sense of humor! I could literally listen to him talk about music and drums for hours.
Extremely cool episode, guys! You did some great work on this one.
Thank you so so much for doing thoses episodes on Louis Cole!! He is such a massive inspiration and a creative progressist, and he's so so humble! He doesn't show off a lot and it's so great to have content and some access to his magnificent mind :D
Thank you for sharing this wonderful interview with you wonderful people!
Thanks soooooo much for your wonderful clips, sooooo inspiring!!
This may be the most delightful interview I ever watched. Came for some Louis Cole wisdom, stayed for your amazing interview skills, warm personalities, and all the infectious friend-chemistry between you lot.
Bravo!
Every time I share Louis Cole's music with non-musicians, many times I get this weird blank reaction - they just do not get it. Show the same material to musicians and the reaction is immediate: they are blown away and instantly subscribe to his channel and seek out more of his stuff. That says it all, really.
This. Exactly. Yes.
I get the same reactions but I never stopped to think why tho. I wonder why...
@@TastyLaserCakes My own guess is simple wavelength - a lot of peeps are trained to accept certain formats and styles because that is all they know - when they hear something that breaks outside those safe boundaries they just don't know what to do with it. Musicians, because they delve deeper (and are, in theory, more creative), are more accustomed to looking beyond the norm and appreciate a vanguard with ingenuity when one breaks through the mundane. I think musicians might better appreciate the technical qualities too. And so we embrace Mr. Cole.
"This just sounds like club music"
"Yeah, but he's doing it on real drums"
"So?"
God dammit
- How much do you practice with metronome?
- Oh man! Not enough! I wish I did more! (...) I use to sleep with a metronome under my pillow.
This is his "not enough". That explains a lot!
This was such a great interview/showcase of great legends! Louis is a freaking Legend himself!
Please make more Videos with Louis. The chemistry between you three guys is impeccable. So friendly, so cool, it's absolutely soothing and interesting to watch. Thanks for doing this. Now I love Louis Cole even more. It also makes me want to practice more and detune my reso head on my bass drum. ^^
what a joyfull episode ! Love Louis, and all you guys. The man's a ray of light. I've been wanting some Louis insights for years, thanks
This is the most wonderful gift you could do to me !!
Thank you to all 3, it's a blessing to listen/look/enjoy !
Amazing! I just found his art recently and I am hooked
Thank you for doing this. I love to hear about what inspires my favorite musicians.
More Louis Cole is always welcomed! Going to be adding new artists to my playlist now :)
Thanx alot for this interview lads....topshelf...🍻....
dang, so i'm glad there was more from this day 🤩 thanks heaps LC and PMR crew!
Louis Cole is one of my favorite drummers so this video is a gift!
Really looking forward to everything louis cole will release. In this interviews you truly get the impression he's having the mindset of great artists who always want to improve or get closer to their inner vision of the music in their heart.
Great questions, great humor, lovely interaction among the participants...Really enjoyed this interview/discussion! 🤗
I’ve watched this at least 5 times in 24hrs. Funny, insightful and some jaw dropping grooves. Awesome episode 🙌🏼❤️🍻🥁
What a fantastic interview, been listening to Louis Cole for years but never heard him talk about his craft...awesome stuff
Big Bear admirer of all of you guys! Great to hear you all talk about your craft. (I saw DeJohnette live quite a few times ❤)
I love this, thank you so much for sharing this with us Louis and hosts.
Best episode yet! More Louis. Please and thank you
It’s so cool seeing this because Louis is one my role models, awesome to see what makes one of my favorite drummers him.
Man, Louis is SO dope! Also the format/setup of this show is top-shelf. I haven’t watched a show more interesting than this maybe ever… 💯
he's my favourite current drummer. knower absolutely rock. seems a nice and interesting guy too. awesome.
This is my first episode of watching this show. It's great and what an amazing guest to discover this show on! Louis Cole is one of my all-time favorite drummers and hearing him speaking to his influences makes so much sense! Thank you, I'm excited to continue watching more great interviews.
Louis Cole with the earplugs.. protecting the hearing. Respecc.
I literally can't play the drums for shit unless I have my plugs in. It's like the super loudness and high frequencies make me play more timid. But if it's muted a bit I can go all out.
He said he has tinnitus so I'm sure he doesn't want it to get worse.
This is an exceptional interview. I'm so happy that people are finally asking the questions I want to know the answers to and we have incredible, humble musicians like Louis to give these insights. Thanks again all involved. Been looking for content like this for years.
My thoughts exactly! Questions that we all want to know the answers to and it helps us all.
I could watch a thousand of these kinds of interviews with Louis. MORE PLEASE!!
This is a superb video, absolutely loved it.
Louis is one of the most dangerous drummers of our generation, every time i see him drumming i ended up blending my back beacause he is so in the edge my body expects him to fall down but he never falls! he keeps going like a freakin beast, this guy is a hall famer of drums
I especially love how Louis (and our esteemed interviewers) open up about how we try to emulate our idols and fail, simply because of anatomy. I did this for years and didn't understand why I was failing.
As Louis says, the smart track is to embrace your weird body and its limits and play to its strengths. That's where your signature sound will come from.
Great convo. Thanks
Amazing content and what an incredible drummer. Love his pure passion for the drums and music. Thanks for the content
My absolute favorite thing with all the guests is that they're willing to try to mimic what they hear...and most have the background to succeed which is WILD. I just love listening to every episode and feeling like a fly on the wall as people nerd out about music. I would love to hear more thoughts about how you guys feel about artists with very wide/large instrumentation and what it brings to the music. You touched on it briefly in the September video about Earth Wind & Fire, but I've been wondering about this since I heard Aim and Ignite by fun.
soo much fun watching you guys with LC. It just feels like good friends catching up! Super engaging to watch!
Awesome guy Louis is, awesome series, thank you.
This was rad. Been a massive Cole fan forever and what a cool dude on top apparently
The "HAT" hat is silly, but it made me laugh about a dozen times through the video. Louis Cole is a rad dude.
I love the adjectives you guys use (soupy, organic) - I've been an amateur musician (and listener) for a while, and there were some musicians for whom I naturally went towards some kind of food-based description. E.g. whenever I l hear Paul Chambers (Miles bassist on Kind of Blue), I instantly felt his tone was 'edible' in some way and I couldn't justify why!
great to hear his thoughts on drumming, he truly is an innovator.
Great interview with one of today’s top drummers! So glad I heard him in Mannheim last Sunday, standing front row directly in front of his drum set ❤️. Un-f…ing-believable ability!
Keith Carlock's trad grip thing is wild! Nobody sounds like him, I got to see him live in Kolkata with Wayne Krantz and Tim Lefebvre as a teenager over a decade ago, and safe to say, I've not been ok since XD love that Louis was inspired by him! So frikkin cool
Even more Louis Cole! You are the best! 🥳
Please just one more with Drums + Keyboard coordination like in Clown Core!
What a privilege to hear my favourite drummer’s favourite drummers
I love what Louis had to say about Buddy Rich. Louis Cole Rules!
I was cracking up throughout this whole video!
My dad (RIP) who was a drummer always said Buddy Rich was the best. And im glad he is still recognised
OWL - old white lady here - You guys are just adorably charming, a necessary attribute for visual media. (Ask any K-pop group.) In the process of counting dimples, I am learning musical stuff I never previously had time for. Thanks so much.
Such a great show. Thank you guys
I absolutely love the way you guys made this video. Everything is organized in the optimal way.
Ryan, I never knew you played on Baby I Don’t Know with Vulf. that was an amazing discovery. always loved the guitar parts in that song. keep doing what u guys do :)
He wrote it!

Incredible video to contribute to our cultural heritage. Thank you! Keep this going please.❤️🙏🏼
This was a fantastic one thanks guys
Another Louis episode so soon?! 👏 Maybe sometime you can talk with him about his hilarious video aesthetic.
Love what he said about figuring out the technique that fits your body. I was frustrated by teachers who were telling me to do things that just didn't work for my hands/fingers. Started getting tendonitis. I eventually figured out the way that worked for me.
That's... not Jojo Mayer. But seriously this was a great video. I LOVE Keith Carlock, in particular the Wayne Krantz and Lincoln Goines/Tim Lefebvre stuff. There's some stellar north sea jazz footage knocking around
awesome interview
Outstanding interview
