This dude is humble, hard-working, and you can just tell he's just a sucker for the music. When you come across people who feel this way about music, and are having success in doing it after grinding for so long, it's just a great feeling.
I met him few weeks ago. He invited my family to come back stage to meet him and some of his band. They were all super kind and down to earth. It was very impactful moment to us all. Especially for my 7 year old son. LC even subscribed to my kids UA-cam channel 😊. Now he thinks we are friends with him.
"I barely know what I'm doing, but I know what I like hearing" is such a good mindset to have when making music. Finding out for yourself how things work and what does what absolutely helps make a sound that's truly yours
Almost unbearable amounts of bromance here, stop it! (actually dont, its a great thing that people can have this much of respect and love for eachother) I've followed all of you three since 2008, I know the music of every one of you through and through, you've probably been the most inspirational conteporaries for me, great to see you getting together and making this video, feels like I'm meeting old friends :)
Could’ve talked about Genevieves influence on the music, they’re giving him credit for all of those harmonies but I think she had a lot to do with it as well
neither Luis or Sam has confirmed involvement, probly wanna try to keep up the mystery even though pretty much everyone knows it's him at this point, but I'm sure they asked him about it off camera
God I remember being absolutely OBSESSED with Louis's stuff, his work is like a singularity of a gravitational force because he has his own musical language paired with absolutely ferocious passion. His harmonic content is just so rich and fun and crazy but I just think there is TONS of emotional range in his work too... I think Window Shop might be one of the greatest songs of all time - it mixes 90's anime synths with breakneck drumming and heart melting vocals from Genevieve - possibly one of the most satisfying pieces of music ever. Thanks for this guys, this was amazing.
when louis plays the drums it's like this unstoppable, commanding barrage of rhythmic mechanism. SOVL METRONOME he is singlehandedly keeping drum and bass in vogue for the next generation. regards, another drummer
Nahhh….that “Baaaaby” scream is seriously some of the FUNKIEST vocals of the last decade for sure. From the intervals of the notes themselves to the pure, raw, emotionally expression. Wow.
I think the main reason that Louis' output speaks to music heads so much is because it's basically one big in-joke, played with exceptional talent. I'm a huge believer that good music is basically comedy, and Louis' work is impeccable hilarity. Same with Thundercat, FlyLo, and Collier to some extent. Great music is funny as fuck.
When i first heard Louis (yes sadly just about 6 months ago) his music just exploded in my head. Love the arrangements, funkiness, improv - everything.
You guys just unlocked so much Louis Cole lore for the masses! Thank you so much! Because of where i am in my producing journey i especially enjoyed the part about ozone limiting/mastering and drum micing! Epic!
I have to say - its so awesome to hear questions like, where does the money come from, and how much do you work. Its so inspiring to hear about process and the art, the stuff that really matters, but its also so helpful to hear answers to questions like these as I try to piece my income together and figure out my life.
I never thought that louis cole is actually a normal human being. I think this is the best musicians react episode, and I would say by a long shot, but the episode with the back vocals of aretha is so much killing too. Would love to see Genevieve next.
Ben Levin would be fantastic to see on here - he's got so much work credits now doing session stuff for so many artists, and his tone has the same kind of "this can only be Ben Levin" to it that Louis has with his music
I’m just smiling the entire time I’m watching this. I love love love Louis Cole soo much, i love seeing him get the recognition he deserves, it’s beautiful that him and thundercat crossed paths and “I love Louis Cole” ended up on a Grammy winning album! Seeing Louis’s face while talking about a 50 piece orhcestra is what it’s all about. This dude inspires me daily.. I love Louis Cole:)
I first remember seeing Louis on Jack's early solo stuff and he's been my absolutely favorite drummer ever since. He has such a unique voice on the kit, and his music is just incredible. Thank you for having him on the show! Really enjoyed this!
Aw, I just happened to be going on a kick this past week trying to find anything new from Louis Cole, without much luck, then worrying he's maybe shifted careers or something... So great to see him alive and well. Really love his music, it has given me much joy, and I just wish him the best in whatever he's up to. Thanks for the great little video here.
SUCH an amazing interview. This mix of amazing interviewers having such a close relationship to the person they are interviewing is so rare, this is gold
feel so lucky to have seen knower twice, once the duo at the Rex and once the full band at the Horseshoe both in Toronto. Two of the best shows I've ever seen honestly
...I have always listened to every musical genre appreciating the quality, imagination and talent, as well as the commitment of each artist, and in these years in which I have the impression that creativity has flattened, I find that Louis Cole brings something back in mind to my ears, perhaps not entirely new, but he certainly manages to give new life to something that was dying, I thank him because for me music is something indispensable, and I wish him the success he deserves, and he deserves it above all because his art is the fruit of his passion and not of the search for fame and success
Louis Cole! Man! I found him and Genevieve Artadi during the pandemic and fell in love with their music. You know, that part of the story Louis is telling about when he and Thundercat were jamming and Louis was thinking, that was a good warm up. Let's record. It reminds me of Thelonious Monk in Straight No Chaser. Same thing happened. He was playing and when he finished, the producer was like, alright. That was a good warm up lets run it again. Thelonious was like, WHAT!!! You didn't get that?!!! LMAO
Favorite drummer, musician, songwriter, producer I've ever encountered I think. My damn hero and makes me wanna quit. Also, love his Mario Kart soundtrack influences haha!
I love that you brought up his unique sense of harmony and chord structure. I don’t know the first thing about that shit, but my ears constantly tell me that what Louis is doing is really special.
28:42-29:20 this is the most succinct description of Louis' vibe I've heard yet. I can completely relate. I grew up in the Lutheran church as a son of two pastors, with my mom doubling on organ and flute most Sundays. Around age 14 I started to get into jazz and then Alt rock (Radiohead and Rage) and no genre really blended the beautiful chorale orchestrations with the driving and harmonically adventurous vibe that progressive artists were putting down at the time. Louis Cole is almost my 'church music' these days, and his art helps me trace a cohesive narrative of my musical journey through life. That's why I truly love and appreciate him and his vision. I hope I get to jam with him someday. Thank you guys for this interview!
Its amazing to see how unconstrained of an approach Louis takes with mixing! Makes me feel much more confident and want to experiment more rather than go the proven conventional route of doing things! Awesome talk, wish it didnt end! Much love
One of my favorite musicians of all time is Louis. He knows how to create a heavenly sound. Epic Comedy plus Epic Music. :D Awesome channel. God bless you guys.
Love everything louis does, love his solo, knower, his features on big band and snarky puppy, just a monster drummer, composer singer just an inspiration for everything musical. I see Louis Cole on a project I get hype every time without question.
He's the son of a jazz musician, has been playing multiple instruments since he was 8 and graduated in jazz studies lol. I'd hardly say he "doesn't know what he's doing", he's extremely modest.
@@brandoncheek2597 doesn't know what he's doing in the sense that none of us know what we're doing. He's winging it the best way he knows how. Loved his comment about not knowing what to do when you have all the options in the world. That one gets me bad.
Loved Louis music for a long time but I think this is the first time I've actually heard him talk. Very cool, friendly and down to earth as expected. Awesome video!
Im beyond fascinated by this. Louis Cole is def one of those musicians that you want to know more about the Genius behind it. A bummer he didnt talk about clowncore Tho🤡🤡
Wow, actually I discovered Louis through Austin Peralta as well! That video of Goodbye Porkpie Hat from Austin's last performance breaks my heart every time I hear it. Gone too soon. Thanks for the episode y'all. Really love the deep dive into the people and community behind some of my favorite music.
This is probably my favorite episode ever! I just love the vibes, the emotion of listening to each other talking about your work. I admire all of you deeply. Thanks for being such a ginormous source of inspiration! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
This was super inspiring! I did not know Louis before but the way he describes his process makes the whole production side of things seem so much more accessible. I'm gonna try to take it to heart and stop focusing on doing it "correctly" and instead doing it in a way that achieves what I want.
You nailed it. Think about how many times in the past someone introduced an "incorrect" production technique only to have people love it and then everyone starts copying it. So, do you.
There’s no correct in art. There’s a way to do things that are traditional, and that’s how you learn, but ultimately great art is created when you break the traditional “rules”
This is so cool. I'm a huge Louis Cole fan and Scary Pockets fan, never had a CLUE until now ya'll were friends! This for some reason makes me so happy lol!
Loved this one so much! I first heard of Louis Cole via London Elektricity, via the track "Night", which he dropped first on an episode of the Hospital Records Podcast (#412). Then I found the track Thinking and the rest of that amazing Live Sesh EP, then Knower via Die Right Now. Some of my absolute favourite music. I hope you guys have Louis back soon!

Louis is a caliber of artist that makes me think "I'm fortunate to have been alive to see this"
Absolutely. His spirit of being in it for the music & fuck the fame just oozes out of him. So much humility
"I barely know what I'm doing, but I know what I like hearing" is such a good mindset to have when making music. Finding out for yourself how things work and what does what absolutely helps make a sound that's truly yours

Louis lives up to the Van Neistat ethos of: "Your workaround is your style."
