- Today we are going to listen to two INCREDIBLE tracks that feature two of the greatest drummers OF ALL TIME. First up is John Bonham from @ledzeppelin with "Good Times Bad Times" released in 1969. Then we listen to Dave Grohl from the @foofighters hit song My Hero.

"No One Knows" from Queens of the Stone Age is probably Grohl's best drumming, at least in terms of pocket and even composition. His best band groove is probably with Them Crooked Vultures, tho.
The most virtuoso thing he's played onto tape is 'First it giveth' and noone can change my mind

FUN FACT: The description of "Good Times Bad Times" they read out in this is NOT from the actual review Rolling Stone gave Zeppelin's first album at the time. The praise is actually from current rock critic Greg Kot's 2014 re-review, NOT the 1969 original review. The critics at that magazine HATED Led Zeppelin throughout the band's career. Here's what Rolling Stone *actually* wrote about "Good Times Bad Times" when it was released in 1969: "The album opens with lots of guitar rhythm section exchanges (in the fashion of Beck’s “Shapes of Things”) on 'Good Times Bad Times,' which might have been ideal for a Yardbirds’ B-side. Here, as almost everywhere else on the album, it is Page’s guitar that provides most of the excitement. 'Babe I’m Gonna Leave You' alternates between prissy Robert Plant’s howled vocals fronting an acoustic guitar and driving choruses of the band running down a four-chord progression while John Bonham smashes his cymbals on every beat. The song is very dull in places (especially on the vocal passages), very redundant, and certainly not worth the six-and-a-half minutes the Zeppelin gives it."

Yeah, I thought this as well.....as soon as they said Rolling Stone, I was like, "Uh-oh, this is about to get ugly...." and then there's this glowing review, and I said, "Nuh-uh. Rolling Stone hated those guys. No way was that the original review." So thanks for clarifying that for me. I thought I was going crazy for a second there.
Critiques are cool and all, but in the end they are not the main source of income in terms of albums & singles sales nor concerts tickets. The fans adore Zep and that’s all that matters

One thing I love about the Foo Fighters is that they always write songs that will sound great live, which is why they always sound great live!
this is almost too accurate. They write songs you feel great singing along to. That's probably why Grohl seems to have such a good time singing them!

As a non-musician, John Bonham's drumming on Moby Dick in the movie The Song Remains the Same was the first time I remember being blown away by a single musician's skill. Seeing the performance, and picking up that he was producing a melody with a time-keeping instrument -- well I was just blown away. That was in about 1979. He died in 1980 and when he died, I felt huge grief.
Why these videos are significant. Musicians hear things and can analyze songs in a way we mortals cannot. Having professional musicians delve into the nuances of songs is another way of looking at the genius and integral part of a song. Love the guests and the variety of the song selections. Don't stop (with apologies to FM) what you're doing.
It’s true, I also absolutely need these verified(tm), Grammy award winning(tm), and accomplished(tm) musicians to tell me what to think of music. I am just a humble tone deaf music fan, without the guidance of these gods amongst men I would just be picking music that my idiot moron brain enjoys. But it’s so important to have these titans of industry explain the nuance in music, because my personal selections are lacking in that expertise. I was enjoying the music that I was picking myself, but without this MIND BLOWING insider knowledge, I never would’ve been able to know that John Bonham is a fantastic drummer or Led Zeppelin is a good band. This is cutting edge stuff, and I’m so thankful for the CEO of patreon to be exploiting the labor of all the artists on his platform in order to produce this absolute TREASURE of a UA-cam series. I’m sure in years to come many morons like me will return to these videos, to watch these accomplished professionals soyfacing over every little detail of this music
Although we are all mortals, it is nice that a "civilian" can appreciate that musician's ears are typically always heavily analyzing music deeply.
There's good & bad in everything. Lindsey Buckingham is technically a terrible guitar player. But he _writes & produces_ *AMAZING* guitar pieces. He said in an interview that some of the things he does came from not knowing they were (technically) "wrong."
Bonham & Zep are an excellent case study. I probably wouldn't care much for Elvis Costello if it wasn't for The Attractions. _They_ compete for the spotlight. These guys are saying that's what's great about Zep, but no. It isn't good the way they do it.
When Zep does it, they're working _against_ each other (except Jones who I don't think is in the competition). The Attractions up their game to each others' level. Zep is three guys running for the finish line, not wanting to pass the baton.
A lot of what they attribute to Bonham's testosterone is just effin' sloppy. Idealism plays a huge part here. I'm analytical. If I'm missing something, I look into it.
I have _TRIED_ to figure out what people _think_ they're hearing with Bonham. Even at 20.30 when they talk about that change in the shuffle on the cymbals; How do we _KNOW_ that's intentional? It doesn't establish itself & then change, it's changed right on the second bar. & _why?_ If it affects the song or its mood, fine. If it's just for the sake of it, it's not worth mentioning.
Andy Summers is a great _rhythm_ guitarist. Bonham is perhaps a good solo drummer. But a band's drummer needs to be a team player. His timing is off. Some guy played a metronome to Jimi Hendrix songs to show how Jimi didn't keep time, but it created moods. Bonham, once he settl;es into the band's pace falls _behind_ it rather consistently. I can hear it. It's not for mood.

This is the reaction of anyone who has ever stood next to DK's kit at a show. The energy that he exudes is magnetic but also frigging dangerous. It's like standing next to a rack of M80s.
I would love a whole series of you just talking about Led Zeppelin and the amazing musicianship of each member. Bonham is arguably one of the greatest rock drummers. But plant is also one of the greatest vocalists, Paige one of the greatest guitarists and producers, and Jones one of the greatest bassists and multi instrumentalists. There’s seriously not a band like them

The drums sound outrageously good whenever Darren starts playing. I can't imagine how great it sounded live in the room when they recorded this.

One thing to note! Not sure if the cowbell is overdubbed but whenever they played live, he had his cowbell mounted and played with his kit for this song. Assuming that Bonzo is BONZO, he for sure played it all live
Pretty sure it's live, the only other timekeeping element there is pedal hi-hat
No overdub, that's Bonham. Live, the cowbell was positioned on the Right for that reason so that all the snare and tom tom work could be handled by the left hand.
It makes me so happy to know that Ryan and Jack listened to MuteMath, and that DK is one of their favorite drummers. I, too, feel this way about Darren. The dude's beats are so smooth and funky and delicious.
And we definitely need more Pockets feat. DK! Let the man drum!

Ya'll should check out Them Crooked Vultures, a band with Josh Homme, John Paul Jones (Led Zep bassist), and Dave Grohl on drums. Grohl unleashes on that record, and I imagine is so stoked playing with JPJ

Suggestion: I'm a massive John Mayer fan, and I always hear SO much praise for Pino Palladino, but I can't say I've ever really heard his bass playing stick out. I'd love a deep dive on what makes him such a legend, along with Steve Jordan and Mayer as well. Awesome video as always, gents! Keep em coming, cheers

Seeing Darren King is the best surprise possible for my afternoon. He has influenced so many drum parts that I write.

I saw FF open air (racecourse in Hamburg) on the "Concrete and Gold" Tour, one of my favorite concerts I've ever been to. Taylor also had such a great voice, really sad that he's not with us anymore. 😔
Love the channel and this episode in particular. You guys were completely right about the impact when that first Led Zeppelin record came out, and this song in particular. It was really explosive. I saw them play a few months later, and I was perhaps 30 feet away from John Bonham--as an 18-year-old drummer, my little brain was pretty much taken over by him. One thing that I don't hear most people say is that Bonham did not hit very hard at all. His drum solo that night was mostly played with his hands. He just got that enormous sound without hitting hard--it's a mystery to me how he did it.
I appreciated your reference to Hendrix and how hard it is for people who weren't there at the time to imagine what it was like before Jimi. With both Jimi and Zeppelin, it's not as though bands before them were playing folk music--innovation was the goal for everyone. The idea was to play something that no one had ever played before, to make sounds never heard. Keep in mind, Strawberry Fields was released earlier that year, as was Pink Floyd's Piper at the Gates of Dawn. It's just that Hendrix and Zeppelin took things further--Hendrix much more so than Zeppelin. One clarification about something Darren referenced, wishing that the band had more publicly acknowledged their sources because audiences probably didn't know about that: when Led Zeppelin came out, most of us knew all about the blues and knew very clearly where Zeppelin's influences came from. We all knew who Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, and Robert Johnson were. Hell, Buddy Guy played at my high school in 1967 (he was phenomenal).
I was really happy to hear you guys talking about the swing influences in Bonham's playing, and I was really happy to hear Darren making those bass drum patterns partial triples--most drummers end up playing those as straight sixteenth notes. He comes closer to Bonham's feel than anyone I've heard.
It's fascinating to me to observe the very different frame of reference that you guys have from older players like me--you grew up with Pro Tools, one-track-at-a-time recording, and a goal of precision and part playing. For us 60s players, the goal was improvisation, innovation, passion over precision, and live playing in the studio--to make everything as human as possible. It would have been unthinkable to play any given song the same way twice. I don't mean to imply any judgment; just observing differences and realizing that this sort of thing happens with every generational change.
There was an awful lot of musical innovation after the 60s. More than in the 60s even.
60 players played for a venue. Millenial players played for GarageBand thru headphones.

A guy from England named Sticky Wicket has a great series of videos that shows a history of the old trap kits. He has a large collection of drum kits from the first jazz kits to the big band kits up to the first rock kits.
This is just great. Dave Grohl really is just an absolute artist. I would love to see a video reacting to Chris Cornell's vocal ability. The classic one is his version of Nothing Compares 2 U. But honestly all of the Higher Truth record is unbelievable.

Grohl has been very vocal that his signature drum sound was inspired by disco, all those signature strikes.

Bonham is a whole category of drummers himself. The feel. That pushing forward mentioned. I found it so cool to find out that Bonham was infatuated with trains and that is what he wanted to sound like. When you listen, think about When the Levee Breaks, The Crunge and Communication Breakdown and so many other, imagine trains going different speeds. I think you guys are right about the cowbell as he plays it like that live too. Great video guys.

This is such an important drumming track, every kid that learns to play drums has a moment where they hear that bonham triplet and it just blows you away! I would love to hear your guys thoughts on some other songs like that for different instruments.

For me, Bonham on "When The Levee Breaks" is absolutely it. A mix of crucial and brutal. And "Hey, Johnny Park!" from Grohl. Something about how these guys leave space. The air is saturated; punctuated with pure, gooey sweat and meat. The groove is unbeatable on both of those tunes.
Loved the drum video. Since you mentioned drum Corp I think it world be awesome to get yalls takes on a drum Corp show or an indoor drumline show

I just discovered your channel I'm not a musician but I'm married to one and I'm an avid music enthusiast I've dabbled myself with guitar I played piano as a child but anyway I love your discussions you make it accessible for a non musician to understand yet you go deep and get pretty technical good stuff I love how excited you get too. I get the feeling you love music as much as I do and sometimes it's hard to find in other people, to others talk about music with the passion that I feel it with as well.
I haven't even started the video yet, I'm just so excited to see that you guys are doing an episode about Bonham! Darren has been great in the videos I've seen so far! As a drummer its really meaningful to see you guys actually interested in that part of songs or just in music generally, otherwise I often feel put down and not as musically accomplished, simply for being a drummer because it's not a "real instrument".
Similarly I was ridiculously happy when watching the episode you guys did on John Mayer, actually going in depth with the incredible Sean Hurley all about the beauty of the rhythm section, and when you guys actually decided to tune the drums up n down it was excellent!!!
lots of my friends had no idea you could tune drums, one of them even said he thought I was joking when I said I needed to tune whichever drum it was.

I love the insight from these musicians. Great stuff. It would be great to do an episode with guitarists reacting to Television's Marquee Moon and Wilco's Impossible Germany. It would be similar to this episode in that Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd are definitely an influence on Nels Cline and Jeff Tweedy. Thanks for doing these.

What an education regarding My Hero too, no wonder I had so much trouble trying to play it, I never knew it was 2 drum tracks but now I know it's so obvious!
And I agree with Darren, Bonzo is playing the cowbell I reckon, if the we transcribed the rhythm I feel it would reveal the groove is linear between the snare/ride and cowbell, not dissimilar to Latin percussion hand patterns, or the foot work on the hats like Darren displayed.
As further evidence, Bonzo's son Jason Bonham in live shows with Led Zepplin plays the cowbell line on the bell of his ride while playing the hats with his foot.

I will never forget the first time I heard Good Times Bad Times. I was 17 in 69 and saw the album in a record store. Never heard of them, but my best friend bought it on the strength of another friend's recommendation. We went back to my friends house and played it, starting on side one. From that first chord to the end of the song we just stared at each other, grinning in disbelief.
These musical conversations are fantastic!

The reason it feels so jazzy (pages ensèmble) is due to the fact, Page was inspired by jazz and rock and roll (The yardbirds) i feel he loved blues too and together with a fast rock n roll vibe he added jazz elements in the vocals

I'd love an episode focused on "playing in the cracks". For me "Green Onions" is an excellent example of not only a great pocket groove but one that blurs the lines between swung and straight very masterfully.
