I got to meet Tim once at Norman's Rare Guitars a few years ago. He was standing right behind me and said he what I was playing sounded really pretty. It took me a second to realize it was him and said "Holy shit, you're Tim Pierce. Oh my god, thank you!" He gave me that signature smile and giggled. Lifted my spirits for a month and each time I think about it.

He did a wonderful job (especially on the track that was in 11 - alternating 6 and 5 - here in case you are insterested ua-cam.com/video/YsDP9DppmRw/v-deo.html) and made me wish that session players were acknowledged - without being mobbed ;) - more. Referring to a bit in the song which is a bluesy shuffle but I throw in a triplet on the hi-hats every now and then. I said yeah and showed him... Thanks to being a fan of Rick Beato's channel I was introduced to Tim. I had the impression that he was "just" a friend of Rick's that he enjoyed discussing guitar with. I've since learned that Tim is a major heavyweight in the guitar world. "Orchestrating guitar parts" is a great description of the work he does. Such a talent to be able to come in cold and improvise parts that bring an already good song to a whole new level is magic, and Tim has it....and to be so humble...no wonder why he's as successful as he is.

That's because he's a studio musician- you can't expect to work as a studio musician if you continually try to be the star of the album. Your job is to disappear and let the band take the credit- and to never play anything that takes the focus off them and their song. Egos in music are unbelievably high and fragile- if you come in and blow the band away- you're going to start a huge problem and probably be let go. You have to figure out how to create something iconic while at the same time- not bruising their ego or making them feel like you're better than they are and are going to steal the spotlight.

This video just shows how good and sensible Tim Pierce as session musician and guitarist. He plays for the song and he considers his client (Goo Goo Dolls) reputation.👍 I perfectly and fully understand were he's comming from, choosing a "slide" solo instead of shredding is really cool to be honest, it's perfect for that song. Because based on a guitarist perspective and as a shredder who love's guitar centric stuff (Malmsteen, Metallica, Megadeth)....shredding is realy a big deal for the guitarists ego😁, Mr. Pierce is right. And thanks that it solved the mystery of "Iris"- its a puzzle for us guitarists even for the shredders for decades, never knew it's a mandolin and the open tuning "BDDDDD" rocks!..sounds like 4 guitars, all of us are playing it "wrong". Some play the intro in Standard (Bm-A-G-Em) with fills, while others play it in Standard Octave. It's actually more mysterious than figuring out a solo on shreddy song parts. So Cheers on this Video. SUBSCRIBED!🙂

But I don’t know how many musicians would have realized it in an instant like he did. The build up and to come up with that solo, holding on like he does nothing else would have worked. I had just finished basic training and arrived at tech school for active duty Air Force when Iris came out. It was all over the radio. I was 18 and just beginning the whirlwind of life that was to follow. I only spent a few weeks at tech school, but every time that I hear the song I am right back there in that moment in my mind. That's what incredible music does. It becomes part of those memories. Also, I'm so happy to hear Tim give props to Sewing the Seeds of Love. That has always been one of my favorite Tears For Fears songs.

Tim is a god tier musician and the coolest dude to boot. He even played on one of the best short lived band toy matinee! I’d also love to see you guys dissect some of the beastly bass lines of Mr. John Taylor 🤟

With lots of respect to the musicians involved, one point worth considering is that Jack Joseph Puig, who engineered this track(check out his discography), was and is a remarkably creative and exceptionally painstaking craftsman. Iris shows off his skills well.

Hey man, not trying to be that guy, but antithesis means the opposite. So when you say Tim is the "antithesis of authentic" you're calling him fake. Just wanted to comment because I don't think that's what you meant to say.

The reason I love Tim's playing, is because instead of laying on his prowess as a guitar player, which he most certainly has, he aims to do the song justice, whatever that happens to be. He latches onto the emotional value and carries it forward. That takes much more than playing skill, but the ability to put yourself in someone else's shoes and feel what they are feeling. I have heard more than once already that he added the missing pieces the artist he was working for couldn't quite hit on the head, and nailed it in one take.
