I just heard this song in the movie the Governess and fell in love with it. I had heard her sing years ago, but had never heard this gorgeous song before.
I have found this song only recently and I find it particularly meaningful, to me personally, in this sense... I do not know and, at this time, I don't want to find out when or where it was composed but I first heard it in relation to WWII and the Balkans and, in my heart, when I saw how it was first portrayed with the couple singing and playing it in the soft guitar, I perceived it and felt deeply as a longing for their origins in Spain, their expulsion from it and the words meant to me as a lover's accussing THEIR original love for their own country with the betrayal in 1492... I am not Sephardic but an expat from a country in South America and each and every one day I spend in the country where I sought refuge more than 40 years ago, I have to cry for what I think I lost when my own country betrayed me and forced me to go away from my own life... I do know that this is a love song between two people: a man and a woman, but in my heart, deep there, it is a song sung by me to my country of origin where my heart, love and spirit will always remain... And I know that this love will remain unrequited for the rest of my life... No redemption, no excuses nor accusations... Just an awful emotional pain and the tears and the fury every night and every single morning of having to live a life I did not choose, dreamt about or planned for me to be me...

This beautiful and haunting song brings back so many memories, I love Ofra's voice and the musical arrangement. I am also a singer (and guitarist), and I did a recording of this lovely song, with my music partner, some years back. We really enjoyed recording it, along with an assortment of songs from different Spanish-speaking countries. Está bien casi todo: pero no creo que en sefardí se escribe Koracon, sería mejor Coraçon. Usas mucho la k (kuando, koracon, kero, ...). La k no se usa apenas, ni en castellano medieval ni en sefardí, se usa la Q o la C, dependiendo de la palabra y su etimología. Kero = quero, koracon = coraçon, kerida = querida, bushkarte = buscate, etc. Sólo es un apunte, pero la gran voz de Ofra es inmortal.

+sld1776 . You are very close, amiga. Clearly whoever loaded the words on screen from some other version was not listening. Ofra clearly sung "segundo" etc. Ofra was from a Yeminite family, so no native speaker either, as you probably know. For Djudeo-Spanish (aka Ladino, hereafter), many use the Turkish style orthography, which has the benefit of showing that one is not misspelling a modern Spanish word. So we write kerida instead of querida; kito instead of quito; kwando or kuando instead of quando; and eya instead of ella. Where it really counts is words like "kero" which you wrote, acceptably, as "quero". In modern Spanish the word has evolved into "quiero" with an 'i' that is pronounced. Not so in Ladino. Another commentator's spelling of "koracon" should be either 'korason" or perhaps, in some dialects, korazon. In the second verse, she sang "bukarte" (buscar, to seek), but I've never heard that from a native speaker. Most say 'bushkarte." Ladino has consonant sounds that disappeared from modern Spanish, such as 'sh'. In that verse, the second line begins with "Aharva," or possibly 'Akharva', as the Sefardim usually add the gutteral sound to an "H" but never to a Spanish "J" which, depending on the word, will be pronounced as either sh, zh or dj. Hence, one has Ladino words such as abasho (abajo), izha (hija), and djudio (judio). There are many more differences from modern Spanish, as one might expect after 500+ years of separation. By the way, Adio Kerida is a relatively modern song, probably from that early 20th century period when Europeans were in love with the tango (imagine it faster with a tango beat). Although the title/chorus says "goodbye beloved," it is, of course, used ironically for the heartless guy who embittered her life (straight from the lyrics). I was a bit saddened to see the video of a chorus singing this in a ceremony commemorating the Nazi deportation of Jews from Salonika. The Jewish community of Thessaloniki has apparently truly lost any significant trace of its Djudeo-Spanish heritage. Suspiro, pero no voy a llorar.

Shana W Thank you for your valiable information!! In Greece we don't call the language Ladino but Shephardic dialect, so I was wondering what the Ladino language is. Well, Shephardic songs and lullabies are still well known in Greece, for example "Durme, durme hermosa donzella" it's very popular, so there is a small connected root with their tradition.
Anastasia, I think you meant to type "Sephardic," without an 'h' after the first letter S . My Turkish friends often write it Sefardic, again, to get rid of the foreign orthography of academic renderings of the transliteration of Hebrew...in other words, academics use the 'ph' which is supposed to represent the Greek letter in words like philosophy, philistine, etc (ironic, since the Greek alphabet is distinct from our Roman-lettered Western alphabet used for all the Romance languages, German, English, etc) But, of course, "Sefardi" or "Sefaradi" comes from the Hebrew word found in the "old testament" aka Hebrew Bible. So i see no reason to spell it with a "ph", except to make it easier for all the thousands of people who are used that spelling. It is not possible to teach everyone all of this stuff I'm writing, so we tend to just acquiesce and save our 'breath' for the more important things about the Sefardi heritage and Sefardi people's life today....etc. Now, as to the ACADEMIC distinction between "Judeo-Spanish" (aka Djudeo-Spanish) and "Ladino". The former is what someone studying linguistics uses (or should use) to indicate a language derived from Spanish that is specific to a Jewish community (the Sefardi Jews). "Ladino", originally, is what some Jews called the WRITTEN form of this language, which was written in "Rashi Script" (predates printing presses), a sort of cursive Hebrew that a scribe might have used in the time of Rashi (22 February 1040 - 13 July 1105) and his fellow commentators. (If you are not familiar with Rashi, check Wikipedia page for that single word. There are several pages that include the word - e.g., one is for a village in Iran, but you want the page "Rashi" without additions.) Anyway, the name "Ladino" was lifted from its original meaning because Spanish Jews in those days spoke the same Spanish as their non-Jewish compatriots in Iberia, so they did not need a distinct word for their language, but they did need to have a word for this rare use of Rashi script to render the Spanish sounds in Hebrew letters (Yiddish is written with Hebrew letters as well, and it has been standardized over the years.) In Greek it's pronounced Sefarathites (Σεφαραδίτες:means who coming from Spain), we don't pronounce it with "d" but this is another story. In that verse, the second line begins with "Aharva," or possibly 'Akharva', as the Sefardim usually add the gutteral sound to an "H" but never to a Spanish "J" which, depending on the word, will be pronounced as either sh, zh or dj. Hence, one has Ladino words such as abasho (abajo), izha (hija), and djudio (judio). There are many more differences from modern Spanish, as one might expect after 500+ years of separation. By the way, Adio Kerida is a relatively modern song, probably from that early 20th century period when Europeans were in love with the tango (imagine it faster with a tango beat). Although the title/chorus says "goodbye beloved," it is, of course, used ironically for the heartless guy who embittered her life (straight from the lyrics). I was a bit saddened to see the video of a chorus singing this in a ceremony commemorating the Nazi deportation of Jews from Salonika. The Jewish community of Thessaloniki has apparently truly lost any significant trace of its Djudeo-Spanish heritage. Suspiro, pero no voy a llorar.

Shana W Thank you for your valiable information!! In Greece we don't call the language Ladino but Shephardic dialect, so I was wondering what the Ladino language is. Well, Shephardic songs and lullabies are still well known in Greece, for example "Durme, durme hermosa donzella" it's very popular, so there is a small connected root with their tradition.
Anastasia, I think you meant to type "Sephardic," without an 'h' after the first letter S . My Turkish friends often write it Sefardic, again, to get rid of the foreign orthography of academic renderings of the transliteration of Hebrew...in other words, academics use the 'ph' which is supposed to represent the Greek letter in words like philosophy, philistine, etc (ironic, since the Greek alphabet is distinct from our Roman-lettered Western alphabet used for all the Romance languages, German, English, etc) But, of course, "Sefardi" or "Sefaradi" comes from the Hebrew word found in the "old testament" aka Hebrew Bible. So i see no reason to spell it with a "ph", except to make it easier for all the thousands of people who are used that spelling. It is not possible to teach everyone all of this stuff I'm writing, so we tend to just acquiesce and save our 'breath' for the more important things about the Sefardi heritage and Sefardi people's life today....etc.
Now, as to the ACADEMIC distinction between "Judeo-Spanish" (aka Djudeo-Spanish) and "Ladino". The former is what someone studying linguistics uses (or should use) to indicate a language derived from Spanish that is specific to a Jewish community (the Sefardi Jews). "Ladino", originally, is what some Jews called the WRITTEN form of this language, which was written in "Rashi Script" (predates printing presses), a sort of cursive Hebrew that a scribe might have used in the time of Rashi (22 February 1040 - 13 July 1105) and his fellow commentators. (If you are not familiar with Rashi, check Wikipedia page for that single word. There are several pages that include the word - e.g., one is for a village in Iran, but you want the page "Rashi" without additions.) Anyway, the name "Ladino" was lifted from its original meaning because Spanish Jews in those days spoke the same Spanish as their non-Jewish compatriots in Iberia, so they did not need a distinct word for their language, but they did need to have a word for this rare use of Rashi script to render the Spanish sounds in Hebrew letters (Yiddish is written with Hebrew letters as well, and it has been standardized over the years.)

Shana W Yes, "Sephardic", I am sorry. Perhaps, it is written with ph because of the spelling as you said. In Greek it's pronounced Sefarathites (Σεφαραδίτες:means who coming from Spain), we don't pronounce it with "d" but this is another story.
