Sien Drahmas Al Dia - a handred drahmas for a day | Mansevo Dobro - performed live @ Brotfabrik, Bonn, Germany.
Canciones Sephardies de Saonika. Canción tradicional Sefardí
Jewish Sephardi song from the repertoire of Jewish community that settled down in Greece after the expulsion from Spain in 1492
canción sefardí antigua en Ladino. / Sephardic Song / traditional Jewish Sephardic song.
Lyrics: Sadik and Gazoz, Thessaloniki 1935
    Music: Panagiotis Toundas
video by Ofer Vazana - www.prime-shot.com
Yamma in a special trio format:
    Talya G.A Solan - voice
    Jonathan (Yonnie) Dror - duduk
Aviv Bahar - guitar, back vocals, arrangement
Originally Sien Drachams was a popular Greek song that was adopted by the Sephardic community of Thessaloniki. The two performers who created it were Sadik and Gazoz, who worked together in the thirties of the last century. They set Ladino lyrics to Greek songs. At a time when the Jewish community in Greece thrived and flourished, they published their Ladino songs in local magazines.
This love song, which was published in 1935, matched the atmosphere of that time in which thousands of Jews emigrated to Palestine ("Let's run away to Palestine, and escape the horror"). However, the lyrics are a chilling prophecy of the tragic fate of the great Jewish community that would be destroyed almost completely during World War II.
The existing arrangements for this beautiful song (originally named "Mansevo Dobro") are influenced by the Greek style of music. Aviv Bahar's arrangement manages to evoke the story behind the song, the tragic story of its creators, two young artists in Thessaloniki in the 1930s (1930-1940), who were transported to their deaths simply because they were Jews.
love song. Moses Kazis and Tsadik Gershon. Thanks to Dr. Rivka Havassy on the insights and comments and help information.

Ladino, otherwise known as Judeo-Spanish, is the spoken and written language of Jews of Spanish origin. Ladino was consolidated as a specifically Jewish language after the expulsion from Spain in 1492, when it came into contacts with Turkish and other Balkan languages, and adopted a massive vocabulary from Hebew. It is also known as Judezmo, Dzhudezmo, or Spaniolit.
When the Jews were expelled from Spain and Portugal they were cut off from the further development of the language, but they continued to speak it in the communities and countries to which they emigrated. The further away from Spain the emigrants went, the more cut off they were from developments in the language, and the more Ladino began to diverge from mainstream Castilian Spanish. Ladino therefore basically reflects the grammar and vocabulary of 15th century Spanish, but has heavy Hebrew and Turkish components.

@@Equydna That is exactly what makes this Israeli music, dear friend.
Every where we were exiled, from the ports of China to the very tip of South America, and frozen northern expanse of the Russian tundra, we sat and sang a song of Zion in a strange land.

Beautiful music and beautiful musiciens. I am a elderly non jewish lady (of german origin) who first heard jewish music in the UK as a young au pair with a jewish family . They were Ashkenazi, so next to liturgical music, I listened to Theodore Bikel, my favorit. Then I got to know Yehoram Gaon. As I had studied Spanish, it was easier to understand. And let’s not forget Esther and Abi Ofarim, who were great stars in the germanspeaking countries. I saw them in concert in Stuttgart and I was so happy to see/hear Esther in the Albert Hall in London 1972/1973.
All my life I have listened to jewish music, loving it and it helped very often to calm the pain, disillusions, etc which are part of life.
Now in my end seventies, living alone in Geneve, I love to listen to your beautiful music. You convey such deep emotions . Thank you for posting it , 🙏❤️🕊

Most of the very first Jews to come to the North American continent were Sephardic. Charleston, South Carolina, had one of the earliest Jewish congregations in the USA, and although Ashkenazi Jews later joined the community, the congregation has continued uninterrupted to this day. Charleston is very proud at having one of the earliest Jewish communities in the US as well as one of the oldest synagogues here.

This is such a beautiful song and I speak Spanish so I find these Sephardic songs very understandable despite them being usually very old. Also I'm from Turkey and I wish Sephardic Jews could still speak Ladino and wish there wasn't so much anti-semitism in Turkey so they wouldn't have to migrate to Israel or other countries.

I'm Greek on my father's side and Appalachian American on my mother's (Scottish, Irish and English with some Native American - Patawomeck and Lenni Lenape ) and, surprisingly from both my DNA studies and my genealogy work, I found several lines of Sephardi who were expelled from Spain, went to the Netherlands and the Caribbean and eventually were absorbed into Eastern Kentucky families. Did not expect that! Before becoming a priest, I was in many bands (playing oud, bouzouki, Sazi, and Clarino)....what a joy to find this music that fits into many of my ancestries. I got out my clarinet...hadn't played in years, and was playing along with this song.... thank you for introducing me to some of my own heritage in music.

I’m Maltese and only recently, due to a DNA test, my wife and I both learned that we have Sephardi Jewish ancestry. For my wife, with a maiden surname of ELLUL, this was not entirely a surprise since in our Maltese culture, such a surname denotes Jewish ancestry. In my case however, this was very surprising and well welcomed. I’m listening to this music as a way to somehow reconnect to my forgotten ancestry. Even though I do not understand the language, it is still very uplifting the listen to. Once this COVID situation is under control, my family and I intend to travel to Israel and hopefully get to listen to this music being played live in a concert. We live in hope. God bless and keep up the good work.

@@tamarchristians8100 Judaism has been in Latin America as long as Catholicism (15th and 16th century, which is would not call recent). Due to religious persecution in Spain, many Jewish colonizers in Latin America identified as “New Christians” also known as “Crypto-jews”. New Christians were Iberian Jewish Individuals who converted to Catholicism, often involuntarily. It is well known that the Spanish inquisition forced hundreds of thousands of Jews as well as practitioners of other religions to hide their beliefs, and therefore it is difficult to estimate exactly how many non-Catholics identified as Catholic during the colonial period. Argentina for example, while only 2% of the Argentinian population is Jewish, Argentina has the 7th highest Jewish population in the world, and the first highest in Latin America.
Sephardic Jews who travelled west from Spain fleeing religious persecution landed mostly in Mexico, the Caribbean, the Northern Countries of South America, and Brazil. Brazil has the 10th highest Jewish population in the world.

The UA-cam algorithm recommended Light in Babylon's video "Ya Sahra" to me a few days ago, and I clicked on it. Because of that, I now got several recommended videos in a similar style, and many of them are yours, which I am quite happy about. Your music is just perfectly performed, so full of soul and expression, and - not knowing the meaning of the words - the voice becomes a tantalising abstract and lyrical instrument, making me focus on the pure poetry of language sounds.
To me, this is the kind of music that would calm me down if I were stressed, to make me relax if I am anxious, or to make me sleep if I lie awake with disturbing thoughts at night. It is the musical equivalent of lying down in front of a warming open fire after a good meal, neither thirsty nor hungry, just safe, warm, comfortable and relaxed, for a while forgetting there is a past or a future.
Thank you for making UA-cam, and the world, a more beautiful place.
