Come and hear our story of trying (and failing...several times!) to buy some land in Ireland to live out our off-grid homesteading dreams. We left behind our comfortable lives in the UK hoping to find our dream life in the Irish countryside. But it definitely didn't go to plan...
What we weren't expecting was how long it took or how many failures & heartbreaks we would encounter along the way.
Want to see what we bought in the end?

Buying property is the most heart wrenching experience. You have no control. You are literally hanging in the wind waiting for divine intervention. Everyone seems to have more control than you do. It's debilitating.
You are nothing, if not resilient. The universe has spoken and you were in the right place to listen!

I was sitting outside on a folding camp chair, scrolling through house listings, waiting for my car to be serviced, when I found our new home on Vancouver Island!
Nearly fell off the chair, bought the house, small bidding skirmish, offer accepted the next day!
    Boom! 40 year dream accomplished.

What a lovely couple, warm family, and heart-wrenching story. Bying a home is always very stressful process with few high points and many more low points. You've all done exceptionally well, and thank you for wearing your hearts on your sleeves and showing us your pain. You are obviously made of tougher pastry and good for you all. You may find that you are stronger people because of it. Never give up on your dreams...never! Thanks again! Love you all for this series. Good luck and stay cool.

28 years ago after viewing a couple of dozen properties we found our cottage. It took 3 weeks to buy it would have been faster, but we needed a surveyor as we bought extra land with a small stable on it, plus the trial hole for the septic tank. I think the 7% RZLT, was introduced in 2013, John, our farmer friend tells me it's now 3%.
We know what you mean about knowing when you find the right place, we knew before we went inside our place. We could see Knock, airport and that's over 30kms away as the crow flies.
Glad you've found your happy place, we love it here in Mayo, our neighbours are wonderful.

Well my goodness I feel like I was also on this roller-coaster ride you described. Watching your faces while you were explaining the huge ups and then the depth of those lows to your spirits gave me a whole new perspective on your family. I literally felt like I was watching Kayvan age a bit while he replayed it all in his mind and in the next moment when his expression changed back to enthusiasm it wiped it all away and the twinkle in his eyes returned. Cori I could feel your heartbreak as you narrated it all, but loved your explanation of the day that you felt everything was going wrong was actually ended with everything going right! Often we miss the signs that the universe is always listening and offers up a solution if we just keep our chin up and see it when it finally arrives. An Ah ha moment. I'm so glad that your family found your new old home and feel like it will end up being even better than you could have dreamt it could be 🍀

I spent almost three weeks in Ireland in August 2024 and what struck me is how much land is devoted (can I say wasted?) on farms, to graze sheep and cows, almost to the exclusion of everything else. I was flabbergasted how little land was devoted to housing and how much for sheep. Your search for land to live in a house with a few acres that is decently priced doesn't surprise me.

What an emotional episode! Well edited describing your ride. I hate those bidding wars here in Ireland, my youngest son (25) tried to purchase an apartment in Cork City, as there was no way to rent a decent place without mouldy walls and without draft everywhere. So so sad that young people, even working hard for many years, have no access to small cozy homes… He viewed the most ugly and stinky places, most for mind blowing asking prices. Depending on the solicitor and especially the sorting of rights of way it can take a year and more until you get the keys.

Well cant wait to see how things progress . Best of luck. My wife and I are actually home steaders of sorts but were in Ontario Canada. And let me tell you a little seacret it is a little easyer to buy land here. You still have to wait till the right peace comes up (dont want to end up buying swamp land) we didnt buy around any towns and we bought in Northern Ontario but not to far north that we can still grow our own food.

I have tears and goosebumps watching this video. Have been following from the start so it's lovely to hear your journey how you chose this place. Or rather it chose you. It was waiting for you three.
Really look forward to your channel every week.
It gives me such hope our dream can come through too.
We are in Dublin and from our campervan travels around Ireland we long for the cottage country life.
We feel its never going to happen in this economy.
Its inspiring to hear when a property you think is out of reach it may not actually be.
So happy it worked out for you in the end. Your place is magical x

Great to see you doing well. Looking at your planting and working on the property I see you have a lot of Ferns growing on the property so the question is can you take advantage of this and sell ferns as pot plants at local markets or garden centers. The ferns you have growing on your land are obviously a self sufficient crop you should take advantage of that. The seeds for the next crop are on the back of the ferns, you should go scatter them around your property. Money for nothing - try it, ferns don't need any attention from you. Good luck

I'm sure everything will be great for you guys! I'm looking forward to seeing what Kiven does with the geothermal work on the House, I left Ireland years ago I think I'm coming to retire but with a side business in the plans but I have a place to come back to. My question out of curiosity (nosy) why Ireland, and will you guys be doing Solar panels or Wind turbines or staying on grid for power, Will you be doing Thermal mass heating Systems, Carbon fuel air circulation Systems, or pellet wood stove heating? or is that all cost prohibitive. Good luck what ever you do!

You have been walking with angels - that Georgian manor house should have been a misery. I have friends who have been living in one while trying to renovate - they are wonderful folks, but visiting is awful. Even on a warm summer day, those 20 ft tall ceilings keep you FREEZING. These are houses that are lovely and romantic to look at, but IMPOSSIBLE to bend into making comfortable family homes.
The two minute auction extension? You were bidding against a bot. There are so many computer programs for auction bidding - there was a high bid (or a reserve) placed on the property early on. The delay was to encourage other bidders to jump on - but the highest bid was already pre-set to go off at the last possible second,
You found the right place to make into your home - the others were not even in the running.

Housing market in Ireland is sickening at the moment and for the last few years.. We went through process of trying to buy and being outbid several times, then we are trying again but its crazy.. :/ The other problem is the whole biding process is not transparent and doesnt seem to be all fair to be honest, I had a sense many times , the other bidder wasnt there at all but unfortunately there is no change to that so far and we can only trust them.

So glad i watched this. I'm currently selling in the UK with a plan to move to ROI and i wouldn't of known about the 1 acre stamp duty, very nice to not get suprised by that when i'm in love with a place! Just for clarity, i'm asumming your solicitor gets the land outside the curtilage of a house valued and then you pay a seperate stamp duty to the house of 7.5% of that figure?

Honest answer please (as I have noticed this with other YT property renovators) ... is YT forcing you to show a lack of progress on your renovation? What - to keep viewers interested? Last year I'd see many reno accomplishments in one video. Now it's a whole hour on installing one skylight or one drainage pipe or 3 pieces of tile. With lots of chat. Lots and lots of step by step (and in my opinion) tedious unnecessary play by play videos.
Again in my opinion it makes me want to unsubscribe.... wait for videos later on that actually show a lot of progress.
