The Most Challenging Week So Far At My Cottage Homestead

  • I thought this week's video might be a little empty because I'm away for a wedding this weekend, however it's almost like the cottage heard me and said 'Hold my beer!' as a whole host of things went awry.

    MY STORY:
    I've been stuck in rut for the past couple of years - both my parents passed away at the end of 2022 and since then I've been navigating grief, burnout and just being scared to make a change. I decided that 2024 was going to be the year I set my life on fire, because life is too short to spend all of it wondering just what the point is. So I quit my job, sold my house in the suburbs and bought a 150yr old cottage in the middle of the Scottish countryside. Follow along as I attempt to renovate this little stone house, build a backyard homestead and hopefully fall in love with life, all over again.
    Spoiler alert - I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing, so almost anything could happen.

    Hi Jude, my 32 year old son passed away two years ago, and I have to agree that time weirdly kaleidoscopes when it comes loss. It seems ages since that last hug, and yet pain can be so fresh and raw, it’s like it was just yesterday. No one will ever replace your dear mum, but I hope you know that you’ve created a community of support here. I hope you can feel that I and everyone else has adopted you! You are inspiring me to reengage in my life in ways that I haven’t been able to manage for a while. I really appreciate that you’ve let us into your life, and shared your joy & grief, challenges & wins, as well as the beauty and peace of your corner of the world. I have to say, I’m not surprised you’re officiating a wedding! You’ve got the wisdom and introspection of a philosopher and I’m sure you’re deeply loved and cherished by your friends. Thank you, Jude, for all of this. Yours, Natasha

      What a lovely message for Jude. I bought my first house a month before Jude got the last place. We're also close in age, so it feels like I've gotten to get used to this homeowner thing along with Jude. but i must admit he is a much better DIYer/fixer/builder than I will ever be.

      Completely agree. When I tried adopting a cat here (South West) a couple of years ago, I ended up getting the impression shelters didn't actually want cats adopted, there were so many nonsensical requirements and hoops to jump through (I've owned cats for 13 years at that point and even moved countries with them). I eventually got a pumpkin-spicy ginger from Spain, who's enjoying regular meals and cuddle session more instead of going through the rubbish on the streets. At least that's what I tell myself 😂

    Jude, cattle farmer here. It's the farmer's responsibility to keep their cattle in. They could run an electric fence along there, and absolutely should do, as a temporary measure. It's quite possible the owner of the cattle is renting the ground - so they are unlikely to want to fix/renew the fence as they'd be doing a very expensive repair job for the land owner who could chuck them off next season. But - it's not your responsibility. Best wishes.

    • @jhenderson2286

      Isn’t it the farmers responsibility to fix the fence. It’s worth asking them, because they may not even realise it needs repairing.

    • @shetlandsheep3081
      @shetlandsheep3081 5 годин тому +10

      In Scotland, the rules can allegedly be somewhat different on the fencing responsibility, at least the cattle farmer next to me tried to convince me of that when his cattle regularly broke into my fields due to his broken down fencing….But eventually said farmer DID have his field fencing re-done. However with a garden fence you should reasonably have a fence in decent condition - but it only needs to be a garden type fence. If the cattle break that and come in the farmer is liable so they should erect post and wire/barb or electric to keep them in. Ie you are responsible for a fence on your boundary but only of a type that reflects your usage of the land, just like the farmer is responsible for ensuring that his use of the land doesnt result in trespass or damage by his stock. You are def not responsible for reaching stock fencing standard of the fence round your garden.
      Re the boiler - no I could never smell oil but we had put a new boiler in, it was an insulated external boiler with a frost stat that ensures the pipes never freeze. An old, uninsulated single wall tank could well have developed a leak in the tank or pipe so that needs sorting; maybe if lucky the leak is just a corroded joint which is easy to replace.

      @@shetlandsheep3081 A quick search on Google. =. Fencing Laws
      In the UK, there are two types of land when which affect how livestock should be restricted. On private land, it is deemed the responsibility of the owner to secure their livestock through fencing them in and keeping them safe. However, private land that borders on common land needs to be secured to ensure that livestock does not wander onto common land and equally common livestock wandering on private.

    The boiler will always have a whiff of heating oil but check the ground around it, you will soon see if there is a leak there but for peace of mind I would have a basic service and safety check once a year. It might just avoid any imminent breakdown that may occur, and remember, they only break down when you really need them! This is addictive!!!!

As a mother, I can tell you that your mother is watching over you and is very proud. Your father is too, and he's probably yelling at you that you are using the wrong tool for that job or such. One way to keep the mice out of the house is to go all around the inside and outside and fill any openings with steel wool. Under the sinks in the kitchen and bathrooms are two of the most notorious places. The little critters can't chew through steel wool. You can also make a spray solution of cayenne or cinnamon boiled in water and spray it all around the perimeter.

    • @ginavandam735
      @ginavandam735 3 години тому +1

      I would say..make sure it is not steelwool but the one you can wash the dishes with, with broader "steelbands"...otherwise they will be chewing through.

    Hi! Former rescue/shelter worker here and lifelong feral cat whisperer. Here is some insight into the cat issue.
    1. One of the more common reasons for an animal to be returned to the shelter is “not getting along with other animals or family”. The shelters are trying to prevent returns. Cats are both predator and prey, new situations and new predators (dogs, humans) generally make them antsy. Please see Jackson Galaxy videos on how to lessen feline anxiety.
    2. Their policy does not mean a cat is not a good idea. Actually, I recommend getting two. If you can get a seasoned mouser and one of her kittens - Jackpot! If they come from a household with dogs - Double Jackpot! Ask your neighbors - I’m from the US, so maybe everyone in countryside in Scotland spays and neuters - but in my neck of the woods, someone almost ALWAYS has kittens to rehome. If you are going with a kitten, I still recommend getting two, because the only creature on Earth with the same energy as a kitten, is another kitten. Also remember, cats remain in their velociraptor stage until 2 years old (also true of puppies).
    3. Terriers have also been known to be great mousers - if you want to skip straight to dog guardianship. Also - not all CATS are great mousers. Hopefully, whoever you choose was born to be the Nemesis of all Rodentia.
    4. All indoor/outdoor companion animals need regular deworming, flea/tick prevention and vaccines. Good luck and happy bonding with whatever furry companion you choose!

    • @rewildingjude
      @rewildingjude  6 годин тому +5

      Ohh that’s great insight, thank you!! Some of the shelters seem to have a ‘we don’t rehome with dogs’ blanket rule for their cats, and some seem to have a cat-by-cat plan, but none of the cats they have currently can live with dogs.
      My parents didn’t have an issue with mice until they got cats - one of them loved bringing them back as presents! I was frequently escorting them out again! 😂🙈
      Yesss, deworming and all the treatments will be happening, for sure!
      I might be wrong - but based on the amount of stray cats and kittens I see turning up in the US on social media, I feel like spaying and neutering must be a bit more common over here - but then again, we’re a smaller country!
      Thank you for all your advice, I really appreciate!!

      @@rewildingjude oh my goodness, after my mother died, I inherited her two cats.
      One was a mouser of epic proportions, and the other one had poor vision, but still love to hunt.
      So… Lilly would bring mice into the apartment, alive, deliberately, and let them go so that Tucker could hunt for them in the comfort of his own home.
      One of them escaped and ended up living behind my refrigerator for well over a year.

    So admiring your strength and resilience and self depricating humour - having a go, and just getting on with things, your creative approaches to each issue that presents itself. Not easy on your own, but so rewarding - and you live in such a beautiful area out in the 'bush' , as we say in Australia.
    As a long term rewilding person working to re-intruduce and proritise biodiversity, I've planted a wildlife friendly garden in my suburban front yard. So, I just thought I should mention the value of leaf litter and leaf piles. If left on the ground, even if only on some parts of your property, leaf litter serves as a winter home for many types of caterpillars and pupae (eg moths, butterflies ). It also creates a physical barrier between the soil and the atmosohere, provding an insulating layer, reducing erosion as well as providvng nutrients through decomposition - so the leaves can do some work for you on the ground, as well as your compost!

    I got the feeling the water closer should be inside your house, it would freeze outside. This is some outside tap thing you closed. Mine is in my cellar, most have them in a hole under the front door mat. Mice are intelligent, they can find their old home in a radius of two kilometers or more. Bring them far, far away. Wasps come inside for winter, to hibernate until spring. Find the hole, June, and close it off so they can't get in anymore. Cats and dogs go together, and my dog would lead a burglar to the safe, the cats catch everything. Alive. And bring in it to let it escape. From moths, birds, and toads to mice. They love seeing me running around to catch it, pure cat amusement. Are snow chains allowed in Scotland? I have not a clue, I used them in snow and ice. Loss is such a heavy load, you get used to it, but it is always there.
