I don't think this video should be put on the channel Scripture Central. His life is the opposite of scripture. I'm interested because of the history and family relations. You did do a nice job on the video.
My great, great grandfather was a "known associate" of Butch Cassidy. We have some amazing family lore about it. My great grandfather spent time with him after he was supposedly dead.
Butch was a cousin to my wife, we recently rode the Durango/Silverton train and shared this information information with our hostess who was telling us in our caboose car that Butch and the gang had robbed said train! We are also members of the church living in Arizona.
My ancestors owned a store in Price, Utah. With this being about 60 miles north of the Robber's Roost area, the outlaws would frequently come to the store to purchase goods. I like to say, "These criminals stole a lot from a lot of people, but they bought their stuff from my family." Anyway, I hope you do a "Part 2" of this video.

There's so much cool history around that area, and Price as well. I'd really like to do a video about the Castle Gate robbery as well. I'm not sure if it'll fit here on Scripture Central though haha. My grandfather grew up on a reservation. When he retired, he moved out into the mountains. He lived much like the Native Americans & the pioneers did. He had a piece of land called Robbers Roost. So thank you for mentioning that, now I know where he got the name from. 😂
Porter Rockwell would be a great video to do next! Utah has such amazing history when you think of it from a Wild West perspective. It was a dangerous country. And the same reason Latter-day Saints fled to Utah was the same reason many outlaws did. It was a desolate place that was hard to get to. There's so many interesting stories here. I think it's neat how Americas most gentleman outlaw (who didn't murder anyone while in the Americas) was a Latter-day Saint. There's debate about his death. Some say he died in Bolivia, where he did his first killing in a gun battle with Bolivian soldiers. Others say that never happened, and that he lived. His sister, and others, claimed he returned to Utah and visited her. I tend to think he died in Bolivia because Butch was so addicted to stealing. All the robberies stopped after that event. I find it hard to believe he quit cold turkey. But I leave a good 30% chance of him living. But like the video said several times, it doesn't excuse his actions. Especially those of his gang. Kid Curry was the worst of them all. Tom McCarty was pretty bad as well. The McCarty family is also an interesting Utah story. They almost started a war between the Mormons and the Navajo Tribe! Matt Warner (The Mormon Kid) robbed with Butch, but turned his life around and even became a lawman. The whole story of how Utah was formed into it's current boudaries is interesting. Then there's the Utah War. Fun history!
I love this episode!! I have visited those places. My great grandmother and a few of her descendants lived in circleville and beaver. Several of my ancestors are buried in both places. Butch sounds like a lot of my people, including my husband who also has the “strict moral code” of “just don’t kill anybody.” 😂
My 2nd great grandfather was a lawman that tried to reform him and several other slightly "wayward" LDS youths. The outlaws stayed and worked at his hotel in Mona where he was also the post master and sheriff.
My Great Great Grandma was an orphan and was raised by Butch Cassidy’s Grandma Gillies. My Great Grandpa tells stories of riding into Butch Cassidy’s camp. My Grandpa interviewed Butch’s Aunt Lulu, and she says he was buried in Washington. 18:06
I am also a member of The Restored Church of Jesus Christ. While studying history at USU I learned that Butch Cassidy was one of my co-religionist. This astonished & amused me. I did an oral book review in one of my classes about him. The review ended with a question & answer session. One classmate asked me if Butch Cassidy paid tithing off bank robbery profits. I even asked my Professor if Butch Cassidy was ever excommunicated.
My mom grew up in Antimony which is a short 15-20 minutes drive from Circleville. She would talk about how Butch’s Sister Lula Parker Betenson, who wrote the book “Butch Cassidy, My Brother”, was her mom’s (my grandma) Avon Lady.
I just read the book written by his sister, Lula Parker Betenson. It’s called Butch Cassidy, My Brother. Tells a totally different ending to Butch Cassidy’s life! Interesting

I have a distant grandfather named William Black. He managed a grist mill in Beaver in about 1860.He was a friend or acquintance to the Parker family. Mr Parker purchased his hand made stone house after he moved out of Beaver.Butch lived their as a little boy. Mr Parker then traded that place for the larger property in Circleville .The property in Circleville had been built by Mr Blacks brother in law, Mr Van Vleet. The 1860s was the time of Utahs' indian wars. Beaver Utah became a fortified city of safety. Mormons from all over southern Utah moved there.
What a great adventure. My husband is a Giles. Will have to see if there is ancestry connection. Always loved the stories of the West. No judgement on Butch, aka Robert Parker, that’s in his plate and not a reflection on the church either. Thanks for sharing❤

That old cabin use to be really unstable and tilted. It looks like they set it upright and it looks somewhat original to 10 years ago. They definitely redid the outside and the interior is not original. Also Butch's sister said she saw him alive. He didn't die in the shootout in Bolivia. His sister lived to about 102 in Circleville. Nice lady. She saw with these 2 eyes, if you know what I'm saying Casey.
You also didn't mention. The FLDS who own the Butch Cassidays restaurant and hotel, especially after your FLDS podcast;) They are wonderful people and some FLDS bought my childhood home there about 5 years ago. You definitely didn't show any staff in your b roll.

He's probably the top Butch Cassidy researcher right now. I didn't feel comfortable recording any of the staff at the Cafe without their permission so that's why they're not in it. I didn't know the Cafe owners were FLDS? That's pretty neat. They gave me a business card to their Cafe, but apparently their website is not live anymore, so I couldn't send them the video. I told the cashier we were promoting them and she wanted me to send it to her.

The name of the church honors Jesus Christ and lets the world know He is the core center of our church. Besides, the people that called us “Mormon” hated us and tried to kill us all. That’s how we got to Utah. Such a lot of history.
My mother was a Gillies, her family was from Beaver. BTW...it is pronounced "Gill' is" It was said that some of my great uncles rustled some cattle with their cousin, Butch.
Depends who you ask. When the federal government was invading Utah in the Utah War, Porter actively fought against the army. No one was killed. But he did things similar to that.
@@zandersturgill There was a general amnesty issued after the Utah War, and one could argue that Porter and the Saints who fought in that war were acting in self-defense. And let's not forget that Porter was a deputy U.S. marshal.
A Mormon bishop stole property from Butch's dad to resolve a dispute with a dishonest neighbor when he was young. He was not a church going person since. He stole from rich bankers and monopolizing ranchers out of necessity, having grown up poor. He also loved racing horses. You can learn more from his sister's biography on him.

The book "Sometimes Cassidy" was written by a miner who knew Roy Parker. Roy was sent with a man who wasn't honest to winter his grandmother's sheep. The man ran off leaving the work to Roy Parker. Roy Parker had a career in the Navy under the name of a nephew.
Robert Parker's aunt Ada is my great-great-great-great grandmother. Sister of Robert's father, Maximillian. In other words, he's my 1st cousin 5 times removed
I wrote and produced this video. Casey loves Utah history so he volunteered to be in the video. We did record at the Beaver home. I had an entire one minute segment in front of it. However, after I sent this to one of the top leading Butch Cassidy researchers (Bill Betenson, Butch Cassidy's great great nephew) he told me that he no longer believes Butch lived at the house. He may have visited family there, but likely didn't stay there. So I ended up cutting it out. It's a bit of a shame cause I wanted a neat locaiton to show in Beaver. But at the same time, I didn't really like the idea of filming someones house haha. A bit creepy. We lucked out and got into the Beaver Museum on the last day before it closed for the year. The kind ladies managing it that night let us stay later than normal hours too.
This proves that "Mormon" is a serviceable term for people like Butch Cassidy -- who can be accurately described as a "Jack Mormon." Using the term "Latter-day Saint" just doesn't apply to him.

6:14 It's hard to watch a history video and trust it when you make a blatant mistake of merging the Willie and Martin Handcart companies. They were two different companies and its frustrating when people merge them into one. Not sure how much of the video I can trust when you get this simple fact wrong.

In August 1975, Bundy was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, although he was not an active participant in services and ignored most church restrictions. He would later be excommunicated by the LDS Church following his 1976 kidnapping conviction.

I am from Daggett County, UT. There are known Cassidy hideouts in Brown's Park, near the WY/UT/CO borders. Specifically, Crouse Canyon.

Big difference. Butch isn't known to have killed anyone. There's debate whether he killed someone in Bolivia. Bundy was a serial killer. Gary murdered as well. But I agree, a video about their connections and some myths about them and the Church would be interesting.
Except that, I don't think he was being very respectful to the people he robbed.
