Peak District Walk - The Great Ridge - Mam Tor & Lose Hill Walk
Вставка
- Опубліковано 10 вер 2024
- This weeks wander was a relatively short one but one of those classic Peak District routes, The Great Ridge. My partner Lisa and I met up with some of her friends from work at Hope before walking over towards Castleton, The Broken Road and up on to Mam Tor after a quick stop at the Blue John Cafe. We picked a great spot for lunch overlooking the Hope Valley before heading along the Great Ridge to Lose Hill via Hollins Cross and Back Tor. The sun came out as we were walking the ridge so the gentle stroll back to Hope was great. If you would like to see the map and download a GPX route file you can find the links in the list below.

All music by Dean Read. Footage shot with a Canon 550D with a 18-55mm Lens and edited in iMovie
Song at 1:25 giving me 2000 Ibiza anthem vibes. I like it!
Thanks for watching Liam. That tune is one of my own creations, should really get it finished 😁
i have been there in 2013, miss this view so much
i hope i have an opportunity back to there again… ;(
thank you for your video, it lets me recall some good memories…
shan mikehoho Thanks for watching, I hope you get the opportunity to return to the Peak District again soon for another visit.
+Dean Read finally i can go back to Peak district in this summer!!!
+shan mikehoho thank you for watching and I hope you have a great time when you visit in summer
Perfect Dean, looking forward to doing a variation of this walk this Wednesday then a visit to Kinder via Lords Seat on Thurs. Keep on walking Pete
Thanks for watching Pete, hope you have a good time this week. The weather is looking nice for it. All the best, Dean.
One of my favourite places to hike. Thank you for sharing. Love the sound track too.
+Heidi Potter thank you for watching Heidi, it's a really great place to walk. The soundtrack is one of my own little creations.
Well it's a lovely creation and quite suitable for the location! I will be off to Castleton at the weekend, it's definitely calling out to me. I've subscribe to your chanel.
+Heidi Potter thanks for subscribing and I hope you have a great walk this weekend
Did this walk on the 5th June because of this video! Your vids have reignited my love of the Peak District! :)
+Miss Jade thanks for watching Jade, glad your love of the Peaks has been reignited.. I can't get enough of the place :-)
Thanks for another great video dean always a pleasure to watch mate .
jamie shuttleworth thanks for watching Jamie, it's a really enjoyable route with excellent views.
Finally doing this walk tomorrow. Looking forward to it.
Colleen M really lovely walk with great views. Quite busy on the weekend but one of the best walks I’ve done in the Peaks. Highly recommended 👍
Done this walk a few times. Brought back emories :)
My favourite walk in the Peak District, I start at Mam Tor, then along the Ridge to Lose hill. Then down onto the Edale road and stop at the Cheshire Cheese pub for a shandy, then up Win Hill and return to Mam Tor, usually by the Broken road but sometimes up Winnats. Like you said some of the best views of the Peak District up there.
Great video quite good
Excellent vlog. Me and my GF have just bought our first pair of hiking boots and the Peak District will be our first adventure. Thanks for taking time doing these informative videos 👍
Cracking views, I always thought that the ridge gate was a wooden gate. Planning to go here when we can hence how I come across your video mate. Thanks
Stunning views. Thanks for sharing.
northender2006 Thanks for watching Alex :-)
Another great video of one of my favourite places to walk. Keep up the great work.
Colin Jackson thanks for watching Colin, it's always nice to head up on to the Great Ridge. I very rarely visit during the weekends as it's usually pretty busy but thankfully it wasn't too bad. I think the poor forecast may have put some people off.
Glorious walk - we had planned on doing this walk last weekend, but sadly even when we got to the car park we were already in cloud - didn't really seem a sensible idea to continue, as the only bargaining chip i had been able to convince my GF with was the view... However, she seemed to appriciate the video i made about our failure to climb it! Will have to go back!
Another nice video, but over too soon! What a wealth of routes -- and views -- the PD offers for walkers of all stripe.
Random Button Pusher The Peak District has pretty much everything you could want as an outdoor fan, apart from the sea but that doesn't bother me as I can always swim in a river :-) thanks for watching
Nice place and awesom music.
I do lots of hikes with scouts but this one ticks the list on everything
Another brilliant vid Dean. I love this walk - I usually do it the other way around - from Castleton - Lose Hill - Ridge - Mam Tor - Castleton - cup of tea/pint.
I love this walk was there myself 04 July 2015, nice video keep up the good work Dean.
Thanks for watching Martin
Reminds me of Mobi. Now that was a sound that used to go down at our parties years ago overlooked by the Black Mountains. The places you walk are certainly great for a dance. Some nice open spaces there dean - a bit like the Long Mynd in Shropshire. All the best. Mark.
WyeExplorer I've seen videos and images from friends who walk the Long Mynd and it does look pretty similar. Thanks for watching Mark
WyeExplorer It's a track I made a year or so ago but haven't used it on any of my Peak District videos until now. I used those words in the song as I feel the landscape really does calls me back if i've not visited in a while :-)
Your a good producer Dean. I like your sound mate. Certainly adds to the power of the videos. Words...what do they say; the pen is mightier than the sword. They can certainly invoke a good or bad idea.....this one being good. Cool. Mark.
Doing this Tommorow staying in hope can't wait. Should be great
+Francis Segnitz Hi Francis, thanks for watching I hope you have a great walk today :-)
i did this walk today, so beautiful :)
How long does it take normally?
Alright Dean. Fantastic video of my one of my favourite area's... had many a mountain bike session around that area. As always Dean, brilliant viewing. Cheers Gary
gary kirkham Thanks for watching Gary, I think I need to dust my Mountain Bike off and head out there again soon myself

+Karen Brason thanks for watching Karen, it's a classic route and always fun :-)

Another great video Dean ..... enjoyed it look forward to the next one mate
Will Walkley thanks for watching Will, the next one is now live too :-)
I just walked this! It was me and my dads 20th big walk together!
Who needs Spain when you have three national parks within two hours drive - Love the vids I know how demanding it is on your time to make good video's and how distracted you can get hope you spent some time just admiring the view :-)
Frank Hyland Thanks for watching Frank, I really love making the videos so it's no hardship. I always make sure I take the time to sit and take in the surroundings too though so I think i've got a good balance. I do the videos for the memories so I don't feel pressured or that I HAVE to do one every time I go out.... I usually do though :-)
I really do feel lucky to live so close to the Peak District.. The Lakes, Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Snowdonia are all within 2-3 hours drive from me too so I feel equally lucky with that too :-)
Can You tell me what music is on the start ??Please.
A great classic walk Dean! Was up there Sunday via Rushup Edge in the rain lol.. You do seem to pick the good weather days.. Love the trendy Apple watch!
***** Thanks for watching Stephen, we did get lucky with the weather thankfully. I don't mind a bit of rain but I think it may have scuppered plans for another work walking day with my girlfriends colleagues if it had been bleak :-) Luckily it was good and another is being arranged for September time
Enjoyed watching Dean, well edited & liking the music! ... ATB... ✌
RobinBowHood thanks for watching. I made that track a while ago but this was it's first outing in one of my Peak District videos.
Cool...Did you make the vocals for the track? ... Wouldn't mind making some music meself sometime! ✌
I did yes :-) no auto tune either haha
Good man, keep it up Dean... ATB ✌
Thank you, will do :-)

Phil Hayes thanks for watching Phil, it's a really great route with excellent views.
Dean, as always top vid pal, pity about the BLOT on the landscape at 18sec "HE HE HE"
Thanks for sharing
ATB Wink
David Winstanley The first time I saw the Hope Cement works when I was younger I absolutely hated it, I hated what they were doing and the scar on the landscape it was leaving. Many years later one of my friends gave a totally different angle that i'd not thought of, she said "I see the tower as a middle finger to all the 'nimbys' who live in the the area who don't even come from Derbyshire but have just bought holiday / retirement homes here. it's like sticking the middle finger up to everyone saying we have to work in this environment too".
I understand there is a need for cement but it's just a shame it has to come from such a beautiful place... anyway, I won't go too deep with this comment :-) haha. I would like to visit the Cement Works out of my own curiosity and see what they are doing and perhaps make a video though.
Another special walk for me. Took my son up there when he was ten years old in eighty three. Got your name wrong last time Dean, sorry. Lose hill nicest spot in Derbyshire. Ted
Hi is there any sheer drops or dangerous sections of the path ?
No it's all very safe, there are some short climbs but nothing too hard
Would you say that the terrain is easy all the way?
+Ayesha A Thanks for watching Ayesha, there are a few short climbs but nothing too difficult. It's a really nice route
Where along the way is the view at 1.40 in your video? (the gate). Looks like it would make for a nice photograph.
Hi Steve, I'd dare say that gate is the most photographed in the Peak District. It is between Mam Tor and Hollins Cross at grid ref SK 1329 8443 if my memory serves me correctly. Search google images for "Peak District Great Ridge Gate" and you'll find lots of inspiration. Thanks for watching
Thank Dean!!
Is there any car park nearby. If so whats the postcode
S33 8WA 👍
@@DeanRead thanks alot
The name of the car park is Mam Nick 👍
Very good. Like a bearded Julia Bradbury (if she were a ginge)
+Steve Dignam haha :-) I'm just picturing Julia with a beard now. Thanks for watching Steve
Hi Dean!! great vid again!! i have an aussie friend coming over to visit in a few weeks, we met hiking in nepal and are looking for great hikes that are quite challenging in this area, it will just be a one day walk but will hopefully get aa few hours then go around a village for lunch, would this be a good walk and is there any extra places around you would recommend? thanks :-)
Hi there, this route is a classic Peak District walk and I'd highly recommend it. If you are looking for another you could have a go at Kinder Scout from Hayfield. I have a video of that on my channel or you could try searching "Kinder Scout from Hayfield PeakRoutes" and that should bring up my website which has a route map and images. I hope you and your friend have a great time, I'm off to Australia in a few weeks and I can't wait :-)
Brill 👍🏻
Thanks for watching
I remember the Crystal Maze.
Wonderful as ever Dean! You beat me to it, I was there two weeks ago and still haven't finished editing. Was it busy the Mam Tor? When we were there we had to cue to take photos at the trig. Thanks for sharing, looking forward to the next one!...Atb Nige.
Canoe and Trail - Outdoors Blog thanks for watching Nige, it wasn't too busy thankfully as the weather wasn't forecast to be that great which must have put some people off :-) I shall look forward to your video soon mate
Hi Dean, Dean here :)
Love watching your videos and I'm also a regular in the peaks during daylight. Basically I do a bit of astrophotography but it's always in the same spot (Surprise view, Stanage edge.
I know this is a certified dark sky site, but I always wonder if this is actually the darkest spot, as you still get some light pollution from Sheffield. So the question is: is there spots in the peaks with even darker skies I'm missing out on for my astrophotography?
Any advice would be very much appreciated :)
What music is it??Perfect video ,thanks Dean !
Anyone got a post code for where to start?
Hi Mark, try the carpark at S33 6RS 👍
Thanks mate easily signed posted the walk from that car park is it?
Not really, if you just want to walk along the Great Ridge I'd recommend the car park at S33 8WA
My kids did the whole of the man to walk in blizzards with snow up to their waist, when police were blocking the roads stopping people driving up
Halfway around a man run past them with shorts on😂
Guess I'm the only one here from Forza horizon 4
