You Sir, have one of the best video's on how to rebuild a carb system. Very clear, step by step instructions. I've seen lots of videos on this, and yours is one of the best. Really....
This video is the standard for small engine DIY videos. I have a McLane edger unused for 10 years with old fuel still in it! I know I’ll need to clean the varnish from the tank, but with your excellent video, I have the confidence to repair the carb. Thanks!
Brilliant. Ordered the parts described, which arrived in UK within a week from USA. If I hadn't seen the video I wouldn't have removed the tank. The tank was full of rust as well as the fuel pump flap being knackered. Fit for another 45yrs! Clear video gave me the info I needed. Thanks
I have the same model shown in your video(old). The information explaining location of throttle cable, spring, and governor to linkage was helpful. I rebuilt carb. and changed spark plug. Started second pull. Adjusted mixture screw and done, thanks great video.
Thanks for the info. I have had a terrible time trying to reconnect the linkage. The throttle cable baffled me because it didn't go back the way my pictures showed. After several hours of pulling my hair out I decided to see your video, WALAH it worked!. I was getting ready to junk the edger out of frustration but you saved both me and the damn edger!. Thanks again.
This video was just what I needed. I had taken the carb apart a while back due to the fact that something melted into the carb via the air filter (actually looked like the air filter) & cleaned it all out but forgot how to put it back together the way it was. I am going to order the rebuild kit for it though because the diaphragm on mine looks just as the one you repaired, also I put it back together without any gaskets, soooo yeah, gonna get that. Thanks for the video! It's folks like you that that people like us really appreciate!
Thank you so much!!!!! I l'm from the south of France, And I bought a little machine with a Brigg & Stratton engine (3HP) Your video is exactly what I need. Even if my english is poor, I could understand 90% of what you said!!! I realy enjoyed to watch it. Once again: thank you very very much !!! And "Bonne Année 2019 !!!
STscaper, This is the best video to fix my Maclane edger, Briggs and Stratton should use this video in the company and compensate you for it, Thank you very much!
I took the the carb off with your directions. Before I disassembled it I fount that the needle tip was broken off in the jet. Replaced the needle and jet out of another edger and it ran fine. Thanks again!. Ted m.
This video was very helpful. I have an old reel mower and it has had problems running. I will order the kit but my kill switch is broke at the carburetor, how can I repair it?
All that kill switch does is ground the wire that's going to the coil so just find a way to ground The Wire under a partial momentary switch or a switch that you'll have to remember to turn on to start it up
I have the same one. But a 8hp. I just stripped everything and finally got it going. It looks like your parts are not too different. But. It was definitely an experience getting it going.
I put the same motor on my boy mini bike. But I was having trouble with the throttle cable. I'm having problems with hooking it up. Is there anyway I could get some help. Thanks
Hello, i have the same Edger and enjoy the Video, can you tell me if this one takes regular Gas or a mix? i have found it to be trashed from a 80 Plus person , and try to rebuild it now, it has old Gas in it looking like oilmix that why my Question on Gas!!!!

At 4:33 there’s a rubber boot on that assembly. I just bought a used McLane edger with a Briggs & Stratton engine and it won’t start. That rubber boot is cracked and deteriorated. What does that boot or rubber elbow do exactly? Is that the problem? I assumed it was and it looked like a cheap fix. The guy knocked off an extra $100 because it wouldn’t start so I’m hoping that boot is the problem.
I would like to know what is the exact carb kit and fuel pump kit for my briggs & stratton 80202 edger from the link you above mentioned.Thank you very much for helpful video.
GREAT precise video. I trash picked a 1981 2hp B&S Mclane Edger a few months ago...got it running but it has a very small miss...i'm thinking it may be a carb problem...because it is hard to start, and pretty much requires some ether to start it. This video gives me the confidence to do the job myself...TY !!
NIce video! My problem is I can not find numbers that match my Mclane edger model 89202 Type 0406-03 Code 76033103 w/ Briggs & Stratton 3HP 4 cycle Seems like it does not exist....very confusing.
Check with Small engine parts business, local or online a lot of kits cover quite a few models use the same number and can be looked up based on just the series number of engine...
The longer fuel pickup tube, where can you get this part? My throttle cable doesn't have that metal part like yours does at 2:01. Is this available somewhere? Thanks.
Whats the best way to get that smaller pick-up tube off? mine broke at the base and can see a small metal tube that almost looks like a roll pin and the plastic all around it.
I'm working on one of these edgers and I'm curious what the engine compression should be. Im only seeing 48-50psi when testing. I haven't tore into yet but I can see lots of carbon on the piston top, so I'm thinking the rings could be worn or valves are out of spec.
SUPERB Video sir. I am putting a new carb on my Mclane tomorrow and it is great to see the linkage connections and tips on getting the carb out and back in.
I've looked for a good instruction video for a 3 hp B&S carb . this is the best i have seen. I can't find a model number on my motor. can you tell me where you found it on your motor?
Thanks, the model number can be found on the blower housing. The majority of them can be found where the blower housing is closest to the spark plug. However on the earlier models the model number is stamped usually on the rounded part where it's covering the flywheel. It will be stamped in the metal and either one of those locations.
Thanks & really great video on these older carbs! Mine is almost identical carb on 5hp tiller which starts & runs well for 5 min or so then leans out and dies. Will start again and run for shorter time with half choke then finally won't start. When I pull carb the bowl in tank is about empty, no rust holes in bowl. Carb is cleaned and new diaphragm, even cracked tank cap to see if tank vacuum was the problem. Same problem and I've pulled the carb 4 times! Tank to carb gasket does have some deteriation but don't know if that would cause this problem. Any ideas????? Thanks again!
Hello Sir I have 2 edgers I have no idea what brand they are..They are older. One is having the same issue of your Mc Clain. When I put Sea Foam in the carb it starts..Question Do you think that carb kit that you have will cover the Briggs 2 HP engines too? THx Chuck Also....after I'd primed the carb it ran great for a 1/2 hour I'd guess the fuel pump is good. The filter looked very old..It was a cylinder type. so I ordered a replacement filter
Thank you for the tutorial. I was a great help. I have the exact same edger and now the blade wont go down far enough to cut the grass. Do you have any idea why that would be? There doesn't seem to be anything blocking it. Thanks
Great video! I did this procedure yesterday and it was great with one exception. I did put the wire back on the plate in order to shut it off. Although it won’t shut off. I checked the line going to the engine and all is good. Any ideas on what to do?
I checked the wire going to the coil and all was good. I even unplugged it and plugged it back in. Would it have anything to do with the throttle cable?
How did you put it in choke mode by the lever. My 2.0 hp has the little cylinder type of choke. I have to pull the choke by hand to close it a little. 😇😇😇
Foxboss9 Do you think I can put my choke by the throttle lever. Your 3.0 looks exactly like mine 2.0 set up, but with different type of choke. Do you have the butterfly choke ?
Right where the hole is for the air to go into the carb on the bottom outside there a pin and gas leaks from there. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
WOW, thanks for responding. I cannot find from the top a 4th screw. It would have to be on the muffler side. Tried twisting screw driver between tank and flange. Had to quit, was about to get a hammer!!
Hello, seems like the basic an most common problem far as a carb rebuild is cleaning an replacing the fuel pump diaphragm, an clean all holes/jets! Would you say this is correct? Should we replace that needle an gasket an also the inner jet? Or just clean it real well,....thanks!
You'll find on most of these small engines you can't buy just a single gasket you have to buy a kit. It's not economical for them to make individual gaskets available for sale so they put them in a kit that you have to buy. Even the automotive manufacturers do that in the aftermarket
Thanks Foxboss9 for this fine video; it helped me in many areas. Q: The Governor in my carburetor (old #: 297599)(new #: 299437) is too loose, too sloppy, is that normal? My B&S engine 80202 (1978) runs for 10 seconds and then stops, I have overhauled the carburetor, attached everything as it was and after using starting fluid, with choke on, it runs and then died down. Could the engine's LOW compression affects its performance?
I have the exact same edger with the same model engine. I replaced the spring that connects to the throttle, yet when I give it throttle, the link won’t move as it should. Any suggestions?
All those pieces should move pretty freely. Other than bad gas buildup or rust the throttle blade should move pretty easily along with the governor that controls it
Hi just saw your video, great information. I have a McLean edger with a Briggs and Stratton 3 hp, Model type 176502, model 80202, code 90051403. It looks just like the one your working on. I have to use starting fluid to get it running. New spark plug, good spark, clean air cleaner. Do you think a have a bad fuel pump diaphragm or plug up jet? What do you recommend. Otherwise in great shape.
Hello I’m trying to find a carburetor for this exact model brigg and Stratton 3 hp,where can I find the hole carburetor?? Or do you need model number?? Please help thanks
I have a craftsman 247.762461 with a Briggs motor. How do I change the oil. With it being mounted the chasis it covers the drain plug. Should I empty the gas then put it on it side pour out the oil. Im changing the oil for a friend so it not worth my time to take the engine off to do an oil change. LOL
Yes. Pour it out. A lot of shops will do it that way to save the risk of stripping the oil drain bolt threads in the block. Or use an oil extractor like in my other video. Make sure when you tip the mower to do so with the Carb side up or spark plug side/front up or oil will fill the carb or cylinder first before it stars to pour out.
Hey we have an older McLane edger and the issue we are having is that it starts but it runs rough and not at full revs. As it starts to rev up it then it dies. Any suggestions?
I have a different carb on my mcclane. It has a manual choke lever on the handle. It does not have a fuel bowl. It will only run in full choke. Any attempt to move the throttle cable to any other position causes it to die. I have played with the screw with the spring behind it but can't get the mower to run except in full choke. Help?
@@Foxboss9 Actually, what I did was to take a close look at the setup. Instead of having the throttle/choke cable in the middle hole, i had it in the top one. And the blade spring was in the bottom hole. I loosened the throttle clamp screw and moved the little hook to the middle position and moved the cable so that the choke was all the way out when the control handle showed to be in the choke position. Then I tightened the screw. I moved the blade spring to the top hole on the cam lever. Finally I screwed the fuel adjustment screw all the way in and 1 ½ turns out. Evidently there is only one fuel adjustment on this carb rather than two like so many have (bottom of the fuel bowl). One crank and started and ran rough. With my hand on the throttle, I eased it to the slow position while adjusting the carburetor until the rpm came up. I continued to do this until it ran smoothly in the lowest speed setting. The I slowly moved the throttle to fast position, listening to be sure it was still running smoothly and the rpm were coming up. That was my final adjustment. To note, I am running non-ethanol gasoline in all of my engines, my weedeater, my leaf-blower, my edger and my mower. I expect that my carburetor replacing days are over. With regard to your comment, I replaced the carburetor,, cleaned out the tank and the entire system. That was my starting point. I would like to see you Post a video on the various issues related to a BP-42 Ryobi leaf blower, i.e. replacement carb model or rebuild and setting up the unit. with carb settings etc. Thanks for your quick reply.
Hello, I have the same edger. the tank needs to be cleaned out well. I removed the 3 screws, but cannot separate the tank from carb. ant idea what could be holding it?
Great video! Really like the effort that you put into explaining the carb as you rebuilt the carb. If possible, I am looking for some assistance. I have the same motor and am having a difficult time determining a part number for the governor spring. Any chance you have it?
excellent video. I have a used 3.5 that i just purchased today. the engine surges which I suspect is related to the carb and more specifically the diaphram. before i dig into this, should I consider anything else? by chance does this take the same carb kit as the one above for the 3.0? Thanks.
+steve h if you have not done so already make sure the air cleaner is not restricted the fuel is fresh with no water and the choke is fully opening when not in choke position then "try" adjusting the mixture screw to get rid of the surge a lean mixture (mixture screw turned in to much) will make governor surge ,, "if that's no help "then" clean carb and rebuild the pulse pump in it..
So i have the same edger at my house with the same engine and i was wondering if i could use that an a mini bike engine. Also can you make a how to video of removing the governor plz!!
If all the bolts are loose it Sounds like there is not enough clearance between the engine and the framework on the handle. The only thing you really can do is loosen the engine mounting bolts or remove parts of the frame to allow it come off
If it's been sitting awhile it's probably a fuel issue... If it runs when you lightly spray carb cleaner directly in the carbs air intake Then, it is definitely a fuel issue..
Carlos if your mower runs fine for about 5 minutes then dies out and starts back up after it cools down it is more than likely you coil is bad and overheating. Seen that many many times. Hope this helps ~!~!
Benjamin Oscarlece fuel delivery is insufficient... there are so many things to look at. The gas cap not venting correctly, debris in the gas tank, old gas, plugged fuel filter, float not adjusted correctly, debris in the main jet, fuel pump diaphragm not working correctly, but it's definitely something with the fuel delivery.
99 percent chance of it NOT being the spark plug But, it's easy to change. If it didn't backfire or run on starting fluid you may have a ignition coil issue.
If it's my mine or if the customer is complaining of additional running issues I would pull it all off too, but for expediency I try not to dig too far. Especially if rust is involved. Always a chance of an exhaust bolt breaking off at the step down where the threads start.
Dan O'Connor the tubes that go into the tank won't clear so that the cables and linkage can be disconnected... Plus the tank should always be cleaned and flushed when cleaning carb..
Why briggs stop making this carb, I can't find a replacement like anyware? Why? Sorry one more thing, I also believe we can't find this gas take any longer too, any ideas? Please hit me back. Thanks bud,....Sidney
24 horsepower briggs and stratton just put new fuel pump, fuel filter, lines, carburetor, and air filter on it all brand new and still have to prime to get it to start what wrong

Thanks for your quick reply.
can i use the same kit for a 2hp briggs and Stratton engine? i'm guessing the carburettor is no different between the 2hp and 3hp engine. cheers
Should be identical.. 👍
Excellent tutorial brother!!! Thank you. Do you have the part number for the actual carburetor? Looking to restore a reel mower.
Sorry I don't there's many variables.
Hello, I have the same edger. the tank needs to be cleaned out well. I removed the 3 screws, but cannot separate the tank from carb. ant idea what could be holding it?
Some need pried a little harder.. Just be careful not to break mounting flange.. Double check that yours isn't a 4 bolt carb..
Just what I was looking for. Thanks.
You are missing 2 round air filter gaskets for the bottom plate. Sucking in sand and grit without them.
Good instruction. Watched it twice. Waiting for my carb kit to show up in the mail this afternoon. Here goes nothing.
Marcus Schroeder Awesome! Hopes it all works out 😀
Great video! Really like the effort that you put into explaining the carb as you rebuilt the carb. If possible, I am looking for some assistance. I have the same motor and am having a difficult time determining a part number for the governor spring. Any chance you have it?
Great video easy to follow. You saved me lots of money. Thanks
👍😊
excellent video.
Sorry, I don't have any engines here that I can show you...
What do you recommend I do?
awesome man, I have gotta do that! is this kit universal? my McLane edger looks like yours thank you for sharing.
Hi I was wondering if the carb kit comes with the fuel pump kit I know you said something about a separate kit would I need that?
The two kits that are necessary are linked in the description
My tank appears to be stuck. It will twist a bit but won't come off. Any ideas?
If all the bolts are loose it Sounds like there is not enough clearance between the engine and the framework on the handle. The only thing you really can do is loosen the engine mounting bolts or remove parts of the frame to allow it come off
My edger doesn't fire up but compression comes out the muffler any ideas what it might be?
If it's been sitting awhile it's probably a fuel issue... If it runs when you lightly spray carb cleaner directly in the carbs air intake Then, it is definitely a fuel issue..
thanks, found it. both my son and I had looked over it repeatedly. i must be old and blind.
Hi I have a problem w my lawn mower, she started well but when I cut the lawn she goes out as if she had strength
Most likely a fuel delivery issue.. It's easier to buy a replacement carburetor than to rebuild your old one.. Good luck.. ✌️
Carlos if your mower runs fine for about 5 minutes then dies out and starts back up after it cools down it is more than likely you coil is bad and overheating. Seen that many many times. Hope this helps ~!~!
Where can I buy the blade I have a 3hp Briggs and Stratton engine
Jacks small engine..
I rebuilt this carb and not it only runs on full choke any ideas
Benjamin Oscarlece fuel delivery is insufficient... there are so many things to look at. The gas cap not venting correctly, debris in the gas tank, old gas, plugged fuel filter, float not adjusted correctly, debris in the main jet, fuel pump diaphragm not working correctly, but it's definitely something with the fuel delivery.
I sprayed starter fluid in the carburetor but it doesn't fire up I'm gonna try and change the spark plug
99 percent chance of it NOT being the spark plug But, it's easy to change. If it didn't backfire or run on starting fluid you may have a ignition coil issue.
Thanks foxboss I changed spark plug and oil and it started right up.
Wow.. I would not believe your spark plug would have been the issue.. Good fix!
I always just remove the muffler first to gain access to the carb bolts and to also peek at the build up on the exhaust valve.
If it's my mine or if the customer is complaining of additional running issues I would pull it all off too, but for expediency I try not to dig too far. Especially if rust is involved. Always a chance of an exhaust bolt breaking off at the step down where the threads start.
Foxboss9 I forgot about the rust factor up north, sorry.
I wish I could forget about it.. I hate the cold and rust arrghh!!
Did u take the jet out?
Nope... Carb spray shot through it only
I was just working on the same edger and this really helps Thanks Bud have a great day
✔😊
Wow 💥 Great job !!!
Hi, may I either give you my email or a method of contacting you regarding my McLane edger?
Mine sounds like it back fires?
Very informative. Thanks for sharing!
Mark K 👍😁
why did you have to pull the tank and not just the carb with the 3 screws?
Dan O'Connor the tubes that go into the tank won't clear so that the cables and linkage can be disconnected... Plus the tank should always be cleaned and flushed when cleaning carb..
Why briggs stop making this carb, I can't find a replacement like anyware? Why? Sorry one more thing, I also believe we can't find this gas take any longer too, any ideas? Please hit me back. Thanks bud,....Sidney
Definitely check with your local mower repair shops. You'd be surprised what kind of resources they have still as they are repairing the stuff too
@@Foxboss9 thanks, great idea!
how do you replace the main jet?
Bill Drisc look in the main tube that draws fuel from the tank into the Carburetor.. Skinny longer flat tip screwdriver will be needed to reach it..
Foxboss9 great vid ! ! My idle screw won't come out ! Only makes a 1/4 turn each way. Is that usual ?
Great video and he gives the links. Woo hoo!!!
How do I find my carb model? I have that same edger but mine is 3.5 hp and has a different air cleaner.
Thanks
k0d0kan look up by Briggs engine number.. Look at diagram.. It will show the different carb and Air cleaner options with part numbers..
thank you
k0d0kan 👍😁
great video thanks for this!
awesomesocks444 sure thing :-)
Thanks man great video I just so happen I've got one to rebuild thanks again
Great video

Well done. Thank you.
24 horsepower briggs and stratton just put new fuel pump, fuel filter, lines, carburetor, and air filter on it all brand new and still have to prime to get it to start what wrong
Very good video...thanks.
