I was watching half of this with the sound off as my husband was asleep next to me. At first I thought, another pretty video to attract viewers. But no. The reality of all the slow patient hard work that it takes to create a garden. I have done all the paths and paving at mine. More like you than your husband. So lovely to watch. And so honest. Such a breath of fresh air. ❤ to you all.
We also live in a little cottage type house over 100 yrs old. I have had some health issues and with working as a busy professional chef...i didnt have the time to do it all at once. But little by little its getting there. 9 years later im still working on it. But we also added a vegetable garden . Redoing old flower beds and also making a perennial garden w fountain. We have alot in common. Im now retired & need a knee replacement, but still gardening. Thankyou! I loved this video! I also have collected bricks for many years from old houses being torn down.
I love how you appreciated this old garden from the first minute on.:) Many people cannot come to a conclusion like you did and would clean an old garden up by shredding most of the plants and putting "easy-maintaining" gras in it (what*s not true at all that lawns are so easy and cheap to maintain!) We real gardeners know that, don´t we? ;-) A beautiful piece of freedom, silence, etc. - your garden is so beautiful. warmhearted regards from Vienna/Austria.
What hard workers you and your husband are! Love that your mother was able to spend her last years watching you and your husband garden-how fortunate for all of you. Great to see all the progress in your garden. Thank you!
Just beautiful, you can see all the love your husband put into the pathways, my husband was like that. The previous owner had the same love for gardening as you do. I hope when it’s my time to leave this earth someone like you will continue to care for my garden like you are doing at your home
As a hemipalegic in a wheelchair I was so delighted to see your garden accommodation for your son and how I might create some areas for myself. I miss getting down 9n the ground and working my flower beds so thank you for such an inspiring and uplifting garden video. So beautiful and creative. Can't wait for your next video. THANK YOU
Wonderful! Daniel loves to be in the garden and rolls outside whenever people are working in his own garden. If he any arm usage, he would have raised beds he could roll under.
What a wonderful video! I have MS;; and I'm in my wheelchair. I do have usage of my arms. Being outside is so wonderful. I'd rather be outside than inside. I love what you've done for yourselves and your son and I loved your video❤

You have lifted my spirits by posting this. Like your mother, I am getting close to the end of my life and I have had to give up my gorgeous garden. Listening to you, watching you do things, discovering the gems in your landscape allows me to garden vicariously. Thank you so much.
It's not often I finish watching a gardening video and say "wow." This recreation of your beautiful garden warrants such accolades and your commentary adds even more value for those of us tackling a major project. Bravo!
Such a lovely video. Thank you for making my day so much better. You are right that watching your husband install the pavers and bricks is mesmerizing! He's a genius by the way with all of his intricate and beautiful patterns.
I’m in tears, this is beautiful! I look out my patio doors and I begin to envision how I can create pathways, plant shrubs and flowers and create a lovely setting the way you have done. And YES it takes time, but so worth the time! I will happily join you on this journey!!!❤
You may have used Linda Vater’s pathway style as your guide, but your pathways are so much nicer. Having them level for your son to traverse will also be beneficial as you and your husband age and want a more level walkway. Kudos to your husband’s talented design and installation! I look forward to seeing more of your garden and renovation.
When you showed the before picture i thought you needed a mower lol. I love your garden and your dedication shows. Your husband does amazing work. So beautiful.
You are right! The first thing we did after signing all the paperwork to buy the house was go to Home Depot to buy a mower! P.S. My husband works for attaboys.
Wonderful. We’re finally landscaping a large garden/orchard on our old farmhouse. And as we’re getting older, pathways are becoming important. This was so informative. Thank you!
You are both incredible fairy garden godparents! Your vision and Ted's muscle and skill transformed that yard. Love Ted's diy tools. My husband does the same thing.
Oh my Word!! You are truly amazing for this accomplishment! I am so happy I have found you all...my house was built in 1913, still working on landscape, hardscape. You are my new inspiration! Thank you for sharing , it's so refreshing to hear that the garden has developed over time and not an overnight 'make over' . It's truly inspiring. I love that you noted all the plants already there, we have just purchased a 40 year old garden, with a house😊 and I am just starting out my journey in getting it back to its former glory. Thank you for giving me hope and inspiration.
You ❤mentioned your oaks. We had a tornado in our small Mississippi town about a month ago. Almost all of our beautiful oaks (100 or more years old.) were destroyed, but thankfully no one was killed. Our town is changed forever. People in our town are so grieved. 😢
Having spent much of my adult life in forest fire land, we always tried to focus on the wildflowers that would now grow in those devastated areas. It's so hard to loose magnificent trees.
I love this video! Not many people talk about inheriting a loved but overgrown garden and all the wonderful discovery that comes with it. I think it's interesting to work with original garden plants and add more as necessary rather than just started with a fresh bed of soil.
Some years ago I put in a paved driveway and had many leftover. They really over ordered! My neighbor came by straight away asking about them. I graciously declined. Had a guy move them all into my backyard I managed to use many of the brick shape into the front yard for paths and edging. Still adding more to the back. Getting my money's worth and enjoying every minute!

New sub here. I know a labor of love when I see one and I adore your creative mixed media walkways and patios! Our story is similar in that our century home needed a complete renovation and the "garden" began as a tiny triangular bed of orange poppies and a square mailbox patch of weeds which turned into a large cottage garden with a curved, brick pathway and gazebo. When the garden became too much for me to care for with chronic pain, we discovered sheet mulching, hydrangeas, and David Austin roses. My current project is adding perennials with a color palette of purple, peach, magenta, and Forget-Me-Not blue. Looking forward to viewing more of your videos!
This is why we have no professional hardscape! Between the expense and at first being unsure whether the garden design layout would work as planned - I just sort of tackled a project whenever I had time Oh I do have a gravel mini patio surrounded by mosaic pavers that were a creative and colorful DIY project many summers ago. There is a circular gravel seating area in the Secret Garden with border stones. In the past two years I managed a few essential walkways (with free pavers from my neighbor) so there is less mud in the house and also because they are painted white and sealed which is perfect for walking in the garden after dark. The latest project this spring was a rather cool looking "hopscotch-layout" pathway covered by three (existing) big arches leading to the old gazebo. My first project was an enclosed Potager, all gravel except for some ornamental mosaic stones to delineate the space and give some color and interest in the winter. The potager has a four square inner paver path surronded by a double row of border stones used for window boxes or pots. Later on I decided to expand and now there is a wide path surrounding the initial veggie/flower/herb garden and I'm using the low outer wall for window boxes and containers with trellises along two and a half sides. Later I splurged on a white Arbor for the entrance - now covered with scented Jasmine and a red passion flower. Like you said - you are delusional if you think all this happens in a year or two. I'm guessing there will be a few more projects, one I'm already planning for the new tropical garden - still percolating ideas for that project. I think it is what true, passionate gardeners do without a second thought because for us it isn't really work:). It is a New Dawn, and we have loved it. However, it has struggled with disease for 2 years. We will probably have to replace it. I am thinking about tracking down a Claire Austin since they are very disease resistant.
Arlington, VA provides free compost and mulch. And they also grow trees for the parks and include extras to give away to anyone who responds to the notifications! The point is to have all of the city beautifully landscaped. Good luck. You might be able to run for mayor on that platform.
@@stonecottageadventures304 haha. I've always thought food trees are the best. No one should ever go hungry. I might just go ahead and run for governor. Ours is the worst. Lol. Thank you!
I was living with our son, Daniel. He is a quadriplegic, completely paralyzed from the neck down. He is now incredibly independent - has a job, owns a home, manages his own caregivers, and all the things other adults do. That does not happen overnight! We knew he was close to living on his own when we bought the house ... just not quite. Now we serve as deep back-up and have dinner with him much of the time.

It is a New Dawn, and we have loved it. However, it has struggled with disease for 2 years. We will probably have to replace it. I am thinking about tracking down a Claire Austin since they are very disease resistant.
Your husband is a saint ❤
I think I'll keep him!
I know how hard this work is to soft lay pavers and bricks. But, it’s worth it.
We agree!
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Where do you live that you get free composting? I'd love to talk to them to see how I can make that happen here
Arlington, VA provides free compost and mulch.
Lol. Thank you!
Why didn't you move in for a year? (first time to your channel)
