In early May, the shade garden looks different every day as lush perennials grow and bloom. Join me for a walk through the garden and a sneak peek at our new project!
The opening picture of your charming cottage takes my breath away every time. Especially since I have seen the before picture. How you have transformed the facade is truly inspirational . The climbing vine over the porch portico, the upstairs window boxes.... love!!! As for the trees obscuring the house... I love a little nest hidden from view. Kind of like a secret garden that is not revealed at once. Also love the herringbone brick pathway to the front door. Cottage charm at its best.
The rhododendron, I had one I gave up on, was in the middle of moving things around and started a temporary compost pile right on top of the rhododendron. The next Spring, cleaning up on the prior year's incompleted projects and spreading out the compost, ... I suddenly had a 7 foot rhododendron stuffed with lavender blooms and bushy, peeking over my fence line in perfect view over the back and front fenceline. I would highly suggest cutting it bacl to apx. 12 inches and covering tge entire plant with compost. Its gorgeous! Love your garden!
I am nervous to try your technique since my rhododendron gets so little sun. How shady was your spot? I am alternately wildly bold or totally timid in my garden. Now I have to think!
Your garden is wild, slightly overgrown and very eclectic...all of which I love. My garden is similar. I've never cared for overly manicured gardens, with regimented rows of flowers and bushes trimmed into round shapes. Best to let things grow as Mother Nature intended.
Simply stunning. Michigan gardens come in much later so my garden isn't as enviable as yours yet, lol. But I love that the time difference gives me the chance to gather so much inspiration from yours. Cheers dear lady! Thank you for sharing.
i have a daughter who lives in the Grand Rapids area, so I am constantly getting weather updates. Even though you are later, the flowers love Michigan!
Love your garden a lot like mine but oh how I wish I could have the stone walkway like you have, it really makes a huge difference to the landscape but had it priced recently and they wanted $5000 Wow not going to happen. That’s life hav to stay on budget 😟. Thank you for the video ♥️
Our pathways in the side and backyard are all made of recycled materials we picked up for free! All we had to buy was the sand. We will doing a video in the next month or so on how to lay a path. That's the project! You might enjoy the video.
We are zone 7b, northern Virginia. The city plants horse chestnut along with crepe myrtle along some of the streets to give continuous blooms. Just beautiful.
It is good to have a Gardener Buddy...I am alone in my efforts; I am Zone 8a, however, I am also 4500 ft, a very high hot spot! A very Dry hot spot! :)
I Love the Spiderwort, I had some sent to me from Georgia and it lasted a good 10-years before I moved it and lost it. I Love the Violets too, I love them as filler! I cannot imagine having so much Shade, but I am trying...my Trees are finally getting tall after 12 years! I have over 60 trees on my double lot, and each of them are like Children to me!
After spending so many years in the West and struggling with water, I am so grateful for the easy moisture here on the East Coast. Hopefully you are not reliant on the Colorado River for water. It just gets worse every year.
The rose was here when we bought the house, so i don't know the name. I suspect it is one of the knockout roses. It blooms all summer, clear into November and looks like the knock shape. If you figure out what it is, let me know. And I will do the same!
Can you get up and prune your climbing rose in the spring or is it too hard for you personally to do. I am a senior and am afraid to get on a ladder to do high pruning.
It looks way too overgrown and the foliage is all the same color of green. Sorry but it doesn't look like a well kept garden to me. I just don't get it.
So nice to see a real front garden instead of the usual lawn.

My son forbids us to get on a ladder! He expects us to obey him, while he refused to obey us growing up.
Well your climber looks great even if not pruned on top!
Nice

My jungle does not appeal to everyone! I personally like exploring and identifying all the collection. Thanks for commenting.
???…… That’s the charm of a cottage garden. It shouldn’t be perfectly manicured. It’s one style among many and personally my favourite.
