Preserving Boxwood and Hydrangeas
Join me to see how I preserve boxwood and create a preserved boxwood topriary. I also share how I collect dried hydrangea flowers at peak color while making sure they still bloom next year.
Directions for Preserving Boxwood Cuttings
• 1 tsp. Absorbit Stem Dye Holiday Green, dissolved in ½ cup warm water
In a clear container, mix:
• 6 oz. Glycerin, dissolved in 2 cups warm water
Combine dye and glycerin solutions with:
• /2 tsp. Citric Acid, Floralife, or Codex Hydrated Lime
Take boxwood cuttings and smash cut ends with a hammer. Place the boxwood cutting with the smashed ends down in the glycerin dye solution. Make sure ends are in the solution. Leave for 2 - 3 weeks, checking periodically to make sure the ends are in the solution.

I am learning a lot from Jerryrigeverything. Whose wife is a #paraplegic. I wish #veterans and older #AARP knew about this video you made.
What do you mean when you say your hydrangeas grow on old wood? Thanks.
When the flower buds form on last season's canes, not on new growth, that is referred to as old wood. Panicle and smooth hydrangeas bloom on new wood, which is growth from the current season. Their flower buds form after the plant leafs out in spring.
I discovered I have those purple plants too. Moved here a year ago (NC) and the former lady of the house loves her plants and flowers!
How fortunate for you! I recommend that you keep a garden journal so you can document what blooms when. Ask other gardeners if you don't know what something is.
What a unique, interesting video. Oops, I cut a longer stem with my hydrangeas. I hope I didn’t ruin it. I also have the oak leaf hydrangeas and those don’t do so well cut and in a vase
It will only impact one season of growth, unless the hydrangea is a smooth or panicle one. You will find out next summer!
Lots of stuff I didn't know about!!
Hopefully some of it will be useful!
Thank you!! How do I dry magnolia leaves or do I use fresh leaves for winter greenery ?
Both! I have a link in the description to show how I dry magnolia leaves using glycerin. But I love the fresh magnolia leaves too.
Thank you for making this video. This was the first time it was explained to me, and it clicked, and now I can see how this works. One question I had was how much of the room needs to feature the Hero fabric? In the examples, the Hero fabric has proportionally less han the stripes, small-scale prints, and geometrics. In one room, the hero was a drapery pannel and one pillow, and the supporting prints comprised most of the other parts of the room. In my project, my hero pattern is the wallpaper on one wall. Is that too much of a hero pattern? I think the items I'm placing on that wall will break up the pattern (a dresser, a solid lamp, and some art with wide matting). Would I need the wallpaper pattern anywhere else in the room, or will the supporting prints be enough?
The proportional use of the hero fabric varies with your tolerance! Mathematical formulas might work for some people, but I prefer to let my eye be the guide. As far as repeating the wallpaper, that is not necessary, but do try to repeat 2 to 3 colors from the pattern multiple times throughout the space. And if there is a small pattern/design from the paper that is echoed, that is super fun. I just found a lamp with florals that echo the florals found in my guestroom hero fabric. Thanks for your great question!
I would haff be e put a King size v be ed in there. Love the delphinium blue❤❤
When our kids were young, my husband and I decided a king-sized bed would just be too big an invitation for the kids to join us at night - the last thing we wanted! Thanks for your comment!
I saved my deceased Grandmom’s lipstick too and I never knew anyone else who also did that 🥹😌 The smell of Revlon moon drops to this day reminds me of being close to her. I love lipstick myself bc of her beauty routine! 💕 Love your videos
How fortunate we are to have such precious memories. Thanks for sharing your sweet comment.
Luv the brass lamps !!!
I have strangely strong opinions about lamps. It's not easy for me to find ones I like. Sounds like you might have my quirky obsession!
Mom called her earrings ear bobs. I loved hearing you say this. Your home is amazing. I enjoy every post and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I always enjoy your sweet comments! Thanks for watching and commenting.
So pretty. The lamps are beautiful. I am always amazed at the transformation paint can do. Charming and so cozy
Thank you so much! Boring thrift store finds can take on a new life with a little paint.
❤
🍂 ~Once again, your home is simply beautiful! ❤😊🌿💯🌱❤
So nice of you
It always feels good to change things up!
Something new to look at.
Love the step by step decorating of your very beautiful room. The personal touch adds to the warmth and charm. Love the purses you’ve hung up and the. The addition of the guitar. Very unique and creative❤
Thank you so much! My husband appreciates your guitar back-up!
Beautiful room refresh.
Thank you! 😊
Very pretty ! I love that you painted the lamps they look so authentic. If you haven’t watched the “ the little blue fly” you should tune in I think you’d like her👍❤️😎
Yes, I have! She was actually my inspiration to start a channel.
What a good idea to just refresh and change things up. I appreciate your sense of family and the fact that you lovingly keep and use mementos with your personal history. I too love these treasures that remind me of my family.
Thank you so much!
Love all the vignettes and wall art and plates. Your bedroom is always so warm and coy. My favorite is the incredible rattan and needlepoint footstool. I have been on the lookout for a one like it... just a little bit larger for my wing back chair!
Kirby thinks you must have excellent taste!
Things don't have to be symmetrical to be balanced is a great reminder
Just basic physics, Erik would say.
Your bedroom is so pretty and cozy! I like the way you display items you love and the history behind them.
Thanks for watching
Very very nice, do you watch "The Little Blue Fly"? If not, I'm sure you would love her videos. You kind of remind me of her.
I wondered that also. I enjoy both of these ladies
Bev was actually my inspiration to start a channel. And we share similar taste. She is the queen of vignettes!
Well, that was refreshing! Inspires me to rethink some areas in my own home, thanks again and really love the colors and pattern complement.
Always love seeing your comments, Catherine.
I was a VA Chaplain. When we bought this house in 1998, it had a 4 inch step. I rejected over 30 houses because of my mold allergies and because my Mother could not do steps. I have been at my sister’s house. She had a compound fracture on a ramp going to a restaurant, and needed me. The ramp had no traction and it was raining. No lawyer thinks it is worth suing. She was handicapped walking up a ramp, so it must have been her fault. Why Her house is much less accessible than mine. She has been handicapped for 8 years after 2 knee surgeries. She has no grab bars, her halls are narrow, and she has too much furniture. Her house is 3 years old. There are people doing ADA designs for individuals, and no videos I can find as thorough as your video. Compliment and I am sad more people and companies don’t educate more people. I wish more people knew about this video. # and tag got 30K views of my cat purring. Playlist for #accessible can help!
Sadly, the video will always have a hard time getting in front of the correct audience since it is not the focus of my channel. Wish I new how to solve the problem.
@@stonecottageadventures304 I started short videos with friends I have. There is a mat you can slide a heavy Kitchenaid mixer around easily on a counter. Also a metal attachment for the mixer. I was with a friend when she stuck a finger in a cheap beater. Thank God we didn’t have to go to an ER. If you made a playlist, or if you put #accessible for a tag, it might help more people. I make comments on UA-cam to help algorithms. I am always surprised someone reads anything I say. Thanks. Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) might spread the word for this one video. Keep up what you do, as I think more people are going to find you.
I was looking for you on Instagram. Are you on Instagram?
Can't wait too see the waterfall !!!
ME TOO!!
your garden is beautiful!
What you call Swedish Ivy... we call Persian shield. Here in California, mine is so prolific, that just today I filled my entire green bin with cuttings,. It roots like crazy just by putting a cutting in dirt. I adore it!!! I gift it to everyone who visits my garden, as they all love it too. It has been a challenge keeping everything alive in these triple digit days. For your small wall containers near the back door... I use the small little bag of gravel from the Dollar Store to top dress small containers, which really helps to hold the moisture in when you water. BTW.... your fountain sounds so peaceful !
With our recent zone change, Persian shield is now a perennial, not an annual. I can hardly wait to try it in the ground and see what happens.
I just found your channel today & enjoying this video (thankyou). But wanted to tell u when we moved i dug up a peoni bush and transplanted it & had to dig it up again - but it survived.
Good to know. My sister said hers did well too when transplanted. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment!
Excited for the pond!
Me too!
The heat has caused so many of our plants to wilt but once the heat wave passes they bounce back
Are you beginning to wonder if the heat will ever pass?
@@stonecottageadventures304 We have a break today thankfully!
This week rain every day. We had a month of drought in Georgia. I wish I could show you out black eyed Susan’s and phlox, morning glory, and Southern Magnolia. Not much else bloomed.
I really appreciate that you show the entrance as well as the kitchen. Beautiful!
Thank you! 😊
No one told us a stained concrete floor that costs $200 to stain would cost thousands to grind off, take a month to do, and be level for the first time ever. My summer decor looks like I hoard, because each room is either empty or over crowded! Thanks for the tour. It probably lowered my blood pressure to watch!
Always enjoy your comments, Charlotte.
Lovely and warm feeling tour...not to mention the outside temperature!
So true!
Как приятно смотреть, какой труд, это всё создали золотые руки, спасибо что можно посмотреть.
спасибо!
So glad you tube recommended your channel to me. I’m looking forward to catching up on your videos. You have a lovely home💕
Thanks so much! 😊
Great video! Lots of useful information and I love how you explained everything!
Thanks for watching and leaving a sweet comment.
I love your home and how you decorate it. I've noticed that you don't have curtains or any other covering. That amazes me. I'm sorry if I'm being nosey.
Not a problem. Our house is situated where we have lots of privacy except for the front of the house. The bedrooms upstairs on the front of the house have curtains and blinds. We have blinds in our back bedroom and in the bathrooms. But because the house is so small and I love looking out into the garden, I prefer to leave off curtains.
@stonecottageadventures304 thank you for answering my question. I appreciate it. You have a lovely home.
Nice 👍 so sweet home Happy summer time for your family
Thank you so much 😊
👍🌺🌸❤😊
Beautiful!
Thank you!
🌱 ~Love all of your videos! Your home is simply gorgeous! 😉🌿
Thank you so much!
Beautiful home and kitchen is so warm and makes you feel like cooking a delicious meal 😊
Thanks for watching!
I I love your home thanks for sharing it with us
Thanks for taking the time to leave a kind comment.
Always lovely
Thanks so much
Love , love the basket of peaches below the painting. I have done the same with an old painting of a black and white bunny with an old blue and white cracked stoneware platter. It is framed on the wall in the kitchen, and underneath I have a shelf with a black and white wood bunny, a small flow blue plate and tarnished silver tray. Seeing the replication is so charming to me. Your peaches look perfect in that basket! Your home is like a warm hug! My favorite is always the kitchen! Those window shelves are such a focal point. Love all your copper, and stoneware and glasses. And you always cook the best dishes. That salad sounds so good on a hot day like this. I think we are down to 95 today!!!!!! And its so nice that you don't worry over the kitchen looking lived in, with the little chips and dings. Thats what a true home is.
I always enjoy your comments! Thanks for taking the time to share.
Beautiful! Absolutely beautiful! I wish I had your creativity and talent for decorating! Your home is so warm and inviting. 😊
Thank you so much!
I am so lazy, I decorate in blues and never change for the seasons (blue feels seasonless to me) but maybe I should 🤔
Seasonal decorating is such a great way to rotate all those items I don't have room to display.
I love, love your home. It’s so cozy and inviting. I love the view from the windows. It makes you want to set and daydream. I love the peach painting because it brings back fond memories. I married in 1964 at the age of 15. We rented a small 2 bedroom house in Dallas. One of the first thing I did was subscribed to The Dallas Morning News. I felt so grown up. I received that paper every day until they went out of print. I was so sad. It was a special treat that I looked forward to everyday for years. We celebrated our 60th Anniversary in October. Hugs from Texas
Love hearing all your memories of Dallas.
