    That's cool that MLA enhances off axis brightness. Before I was concerned the tech would narrow the brightness by focusing the light straight ahead.

      While I’m excited too, best to temper your expectations
      Most of the brightness improvements seem to just apply at 3% window sizes. Also, lots of it seems to rely on AI boosting, so won’t be sustained.

    I continue to be so impressed with how well you communicate the nuances between display technologies. The test patterns are really revealing in the luminance and color shifting on the mini LEDs. The technology has its place but best dark room picture is still from OLED.
    It’s evident how much thought and efforts get put into the comparisons especially when considering the rest of the field which at worst will give a subjective opinion and at best read the manufacturer’s spec sheet. Thanks as always, keep it up!

      Will be interesting to see the new Sony tech , especially if they bring in to 98". Again Vincent is technically right , but in real world viewing watching say a Sony X95M with it's new control panel , you probably have to look for this stuff in certain movies . Buyers of the X95L 85" seem very happy . G4 83" should be a great TV, and coming with stand option in some countries as well

      Vincent's talk about about OLED being superior to Mini-LED here has me wondering: why have TV manufacturers and VR headset manufacturers embraced the latter if it's clearly inferior?

    I'm a big fan of the variety of test patterns you use! I would not be suprised (like the car industry was found to do) whether the display industry boosts performance higher than normal if detecting such patterns on screen; given an assumption they'll be short lived on-screen. They'll likely now hide it behind "AI" upscaling!

    • @random_n
      @random_n 5 місяців тому +9

      There was much ado about exactly that with the S95B early firmware builds. Debatable whether it was intentional cheating, but it had an algorithm that reacted to motion and resulted in static test patterns seeming fairly accurate while moving video was brightened. Influenced a lot of early side-by-side comparisons with the brightness sugar rush. Samsung has changed things since this was uncovered, and the tests have gotten better too.
      For one of the cooler examples, check out Classy Tech showing off tests from Spears & Munsil that can quantify available peak brightness at various picture averages. Plotted over time, and you can see how thermals affect the display performance.

      Lots of Sony films have insane HDR brightness (f.e. Robert Langdon trilogy, Inferno 10.000 nit MaxContentLightLevel, 3647 nit MaxFrameAverageLightLevel, Black Hawk Down 4000/1391, Lord of War 2508/2394).
      I wonder if this is a policy to boost future bright TV sales (since they seem to focus now on brighter LED TVs) - though they also have access to the best Sony mastering monitors, but ye, probably has sth to do with selling bright TVs.
      On the other hand there is Chris Nolan, who had his peak with Inception (1538/308) and now seems to favor a natural filmic projector look with Oppenheimer just peaking at 186/147, where you really wonder if any upgrade for brighter TVs is needed, if he doesn't want it to look brighter than on a film projector.@@concinnus

    • @nimblegoat
      @nimblegoat 5 місяців тому

      @@concinnus I agree , people have been stressing about colour saturation , But red looks red etc. It's only side by side demos , or when brightness really pushed will you see some destauration . People need to get outside. look at the green leaves, they are reflecting white light in hot spots and on edges . Yeah shine a pure green laser in your eye, or watch burning metal on a dark night, you will see pure colours . If you watch TV or 99% of movies made to date , They are SDR ( Rec-709) or DCI-P3 . This Tv can do these 100% , Do they want samsung pop , do they want classic Technicolor westerns to look weird as hell . As you say , it's hard to go outside and see pure colours, they all have white or colour casts from surrounding light surfaces.
      Given that having 100% BT2020 would be good for future protection and allow animators and directors to do use it wisely or as stupidly as they like .
      Also people forget how brains work. How red is something is based on what surrounds it, or what becomes before. A cherry tomato is super sweet, if you don't drink fanta and eat surgery foods. A patch of green on a barren mountainside appears more green, yet would seem pale in a jungle.
      Just buy what TV you want and enjoy it. There is little advantage to seeing imperfections if you train yourself to .
      sixties and seventies was filled with people enjoying AM music on the radio through cheap plastic/cardboard speakers .
      Given that the G4 83" may be a cracker if no QD-OLED equivalent, 83 beats 77 every day of week if close in ability

    • @LogiForce86
      @LogiForce86 5 місяців тому +8

      @@adamek9750 Yeah, I don't buy that because to my eyes watching an LCD screen is like looking into a flash light. Which is tiring for the eyes already, and so when you add strobing it will even further strain the eyes.
      So in a full focus/concentration environment you would want to have your eyes as relaxed as possible and not strained, as that would cause loss of reaction time as your eyes can't respond quick enough anymore as they get tired and lose speed of focus change.
      So if you really are competitive you don't only seek the best performance out of your equipment but the best performance out of the player together with their equipment. In which case I think OLED would be the better choice, especially the longer a competition lasts.

    I wouldn't be surprised they can still hit 1500-1600 nits potentially "sustained' in peak specular highlights at D65 accurate mode. And that would be damned good. Technically they don't need more. Only the larger windows need to increase for that absolute full brightness in all types of content.

    • @ricarmig
      @ricarmig 5 місяців тому +6

      Don’t be fooled, pre production of production first firmwares hit massive numbers. Then after the big wave sales posterior firmware updates tune everything down “to save the screen” and after one year you have a dimmer panel than when you bought it. That happens with my Samsung S95B, when I bought it it was like WOW!!! Now the colors are great but the peak brightness etc is weaker than before (and I don’t watch much so the panel has very few wear out )

    • @MrVaeron
      @MrVaeron 4 місяці тому +1

      Yeah, people are already getting cocky about even higher numbers of Nits, but truth is, that beyond 800-1000 you cant even see a difference. G2 can 1000 at 10% APL sustainend and i have problems looking at the screen or more specific the peak highlights when watching in a dimmed room, cause its already blindingly bright to a certain point. Higher sustained nits at 100% APL could benefit SDR content or sports, like MiniLED does, but besides that, for current Games and Movies, which are mastered at ~1.200 nits at max, its pointless to go higher. That said, its still impressive how much they improve year after year, rendering MiniLED and even MicroLED useless, cause their only real advantage is Peak Brightness and they loose in almost every other Image Quality category.

    Having a G2 and can say, that in a moderately dimmed room, 10% APL HDR highlights are already blindingly bright in Games and even Movies. Actually so bright, that i have to look aways sometimes. So the only thing really relevant for the future for MOST home cinema users is a bit more consistent peak brightness in higher APL, 25%-50% with around 800 nits would be a good sweet spot, even higher doesnt really benefit, if you are not using your TV in a very lit room, cause you cant look at the TV anyways in scenes like Matrix 1 with high APL white screen, cause its just too bright AND at some point over 800 nits, the visible difference just gets smaller and smaller.

    I have an LG G3, and alot of times at night I already have to turn it down especially in HDR because it's simply too bright for comfortable watching.
    Even the expert dark room mode is too bright for my comfort, I turn it down from 50 to 35 brightness.
    Don't get me wrong, watching an HDR movie with these kind of brightness levels is amazing, and explosions will sometimes almost have you turn your head away from the screen because it's so bright.
    Also while I had problems watching during daytime with alot of sunlight with my previous television, that's completely solved with the G3.
    But do I want even more brightness? No, at some point I have to say it's more than enough and can even make the experience uncomfortable, the G3 is more than enough for me, and sometimes even too much at full brightness.
