Hey Doug, so glad you finally did some Priest. I would suggest "Beyond the realms of death", wich I consider the epitomy of the power (heavy metal ) ballad.
I think the song that best showcases Rob's range is Run of The Mill, far less popular but so, so good; low lows to really high highs. Thanks for the video Doug.
Thanks Doug, my favorite lyric, “ he said in the cosmos is a single sonic sound that is vibrating constantly “, also the way it’s sung and placed in the song is masterful. Love your interpretation between the positive and negative. Many of their songs are about the underdog overcoming and are positive as a whole.
Good on you for picking up Black Sabbath, Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. All 3 of these were a significant influence on Judas Priest, especially early Priest. They got the whole dark and evil sounding vibes and riffs from Sabbath, blues from Zepp and general speed and shred from Purple. Judas Priest were probably the most important pioneer of speed metal, but not the first. Purple were first with songs like Speed King and Fireball (I believe this is the first instance of double kick drumming in rock/metal). And yes, Judas Priest themselves were an influence on Iron Maiden, along with the aformentioned bands (especially Purple), and (Ronnie Dio-fronted) Rainbow.
@@Hy-jg8ow I'd say it's pretty common knowledge if you're a pretty big rock/metal fan who doesn't neglect older bands like a lot of younger fans tend to do.
A part of me wants to say that the actual title of the song(s) is "Dreamer/Deceiver," where "Dreamer" is the ballad and "Deceiver" is the metal part. Gull Records already messed up pressings of Sad Wings Of Destiny by swapping sides 1 and 2 (even on the CD release...). "Dreamer" and "Beyond The Realms Of Death" are my favorite Glenn Tipton solos.
Although the term "Heavy Metal" in relation to Rock Music existed in early seventies (even older) but not as a well-defined genre so there was no such thing as "Metal" back when this album came, just good ol' Hard Rock (or Heavy Rock or Downer Rock as it was called back then). What marks the date what we now know as Heavy Metal is British Steel.
@@EmrahUncu Nah, a revisionist and anti-cannon interpretation. Completely untrue! Typical of the extreme metalhead's misunderstandings. Literally all the works written on the subject disagree with you.
@@Hy-jg8ow Did Black Sabbath or Judas Priest call themselves Heavy Metal bands in 1976 (the year in which I was born) ? That's what I am asking. Was that a (like I wrote before) well-defined genre? That's how I see it. I'd really like to hear how you see it instead of how my point of view is "revisionist" and "anti-cannon".
This was from Rob in his 20s, saw him in concert this week and even now at 71 he can still hit those notes very impressive. Unfortunately they didn't play this song as it's one of my favorites but still an amazing show.

@@oliviermalhomme9923I think I would agree. His voice is amazing on Sad Wings and 70s albums generally, but there's a naivety to it as well. He was a natural talent no doubt, and latter developed more technical mastery. By the way, Mr. Doug, if only for yourself, go back and watch the live performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test, which was shot around this time. Sad Wings created the template for Priest and built them a live rep but at the time didn't sell many records at all. That came later. So for me it remains a most underrated album, possibly the most underappreciated album in heavy rock.
80’s priest was half and half for me, some good stuff and some not so good stuff. 90’s Priest was essentially a one shot deal with Painkiller (not dismissing Jugulator but it didn’t really leave a mark). 70’s Priest is something else, excellent stuff to be found on those records! I’d definitely go for “Victim of Changes” at some point, but “Beyond the Realms of Death”, “Run of the Mill”, or something from the 80’s like “The Hellion/Electric Eye” would be cool!
I hit the like button 10 times. Yes, this is probably lacking the harmonic complexity to impress a classical composer. But this is one of the best rock songs of all time.
Hi! New subscriber from Spain. It must be amazing to have the ability to play the piano over a song at first listening. Wow, love you. Your approach sounded gorgeous. You shocked me.
I personally like how they return to the Head as opposed to a regular rock ending on the second half of the song. No rules in Rockn roll. :-) . The band had major internal issues in the day and drugs/alcohol was the escape, the words reflect the process individually and as a band back into goodness.
I think they would have loved to have you in the studio Doug the way you jam over the song is cool y’all - not taking away from priest as they are the metal gods
When I did a commentary for my Top 100 Artists list here's what I wrote for Judas Priest (which I ranked #20): "Looking back, it's hard to overstate how important Priest were in developing heavy metal from its roots in Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Purple into what it would become. They essentially took the dark, heaviness of Sabbath, the speed of Purple, and combined it with the compositional complexity of Zeppelin to create the template for all metal that came after. Priest were also the band that helped bring metal to the mainstream at the start of the 80s, and though they subsequently faltered trying to maintain that mainstream limelight, they eventually found their way back with numerous highlights in the 80s before setting a new standard for speed metal with Painkiller in the 90s." This track was from their second album, which was a quantum leap in terms of evolution from their first album, which was much more traditional hard rock. A lot of people think that this is the album where almost all of the generation of metal bands after Sabbath/Zeppelin spring from. Personally it's never been among my personal favorites because I really dislike the engineering and think most of these songs sound better live. From their 70s material I much prefer Stained Class, which is probably my favorite JP album overall. What's remarkable is that you can basically hear the entire evolution of metal throughout JP's catalog, and they even kept up with the extreme metal bands of the 80s when they released Painkiller.
As a long time Priest fan I couldn't agree more with this analysis. My favorite thing with Priest is the ever evolving nature of their music. Many fans like 90's priest, Painkiller, some 80's and others 70's. I have always enjoyed the changes over time. My car is on shuffle through all albums and live performances so I get quite a mix.
Priest is a band that sounded SO much better live then on the record. The pace they played songs live was how they should habe been recorded. Best examples are Parental Guidance and Breaking the Law!
Sad Wings of Destiny is one of my favourite albums. I really like the final part of "Victim of changes", the way vocals sound in "The ripper", the calmness and spacial feeling of "Dreamer Deceiver", the riffs and Halford's vocals in general. I think the track I like the least is "Genocide", the chorus has a dissapointing lack of energy.
4:28 - Here comes that "power" you wanted Doug.....and it's in the form of an unbelievable vocal! Haha.... Doug got "stank face" from a brilliantly done Rob Halford vocal! - Yeah.....these are the "Deep Cuts"....and they're wonderful!
Halford is someone great to study--his range, younger years is phenomenal. Priest does not produce a static sort of form--they change things about album to album. RJD and Halford are a couple of my picks even over Dickinson.... Appreciate the coda critiques--I think you mentioned Howe once with regard to a Yes tune. Perhaps a coda themed series would be interesting. *I need to dig through and see whether you've done any The DOORS' tunes.
Omg thank you Uncle for your interpretation. OMG I would give anything to have had your Keyboard skills from this. You realize this is from the 70's before Maiden et al??? This Vocal is a Landmark- Iconic Performance!

Judas Priest is my favorite band of all time. Definitely do Victim of Changes, The Sinner, and Beyond The Realms of Death (Live Versions of all 3). Even today at his age, Rob Halford can really belt it out. I’ve seen them live many, many times and have never walked away disappointed.
If you wanna hear them do an old Irish folk song, check out, The Last Rose Of Summer, If you want to drop your jaw, check out, Victim of Changes, any version will do, but Unleashed in the East, that one floored me, Ripper kicked ass as well!

The band had major internal issues in the day and drugs/alcohol was the escape, the words reflect the process individually and as a band back into goodness.
Thank you Doug! Favorite album right now!
Either "Victim of Changes" or "Diamonds And Rust" I think would be interesting for a future Judas Priest reaction.
Rob's vocals are rare gems with unworldly range. NEXT try "Victim of Changes", same album.
I think they would have loved to have you in the studio Doug the way you jam over the song is cool y’all - not taking away from priest as they are the metal gods
And''''''' Damn'', you have some amazing ability in music to be able to just play along like that'
When I did a commentary for my Top 100 Artists list here's what I wrote for Judas Priest (which I ranked #20): "Looking back, it's hard to overstate how important Priest were in developing heavy metal from its roots in Zeppelin, Sabbath, and Purple into what it would become. They essentially took the dark, heaviness of Sabbath, the speed of Purple, and combined it with the compositional complexity of Zeppelin to create the template for all metal that came after. Priest were also the band that helped bring metal to the mainstream at the start of the 80s, and though they subsequently faltered trying to maintain that mainstream limelight, they eventually found their way back with numerous highlights in the 80s before setting a new standard for speed metal with Painkiller in the 90s."
This track was from their second album, which was a quantum leap in terms of evolution from their first album, which was much more traditional hard rock.
They were also inspired by Queen, you can hear that influence in the track "Epitaph".
@@ale.2p284 I think the songs on Sad Wings are great, I just don't like the production and think they all sound better live.
Well Doug, welcome to the world of the GREAT Rob Halford!!!
4:28 - Here comes that "power" you wanted Doug.....and it's in the form of an unbelievable vocal! Haha....
Doug got "stank face" from a brilliantly done Rob Halford vocal! - Yeah.....these are the "Deep Cuts"....and they're wonderful!
At last, Doug. I was waiting for the moment when you would find Judas :P
When you played piano @ 8:30 it was perfect! Would of been great for an outro....great job sir.
*I need to dig through and see whether you've done any The DOORS' tunes.
jon oliva is an underated vocalist also
@@paulwills1459 Yes--Savatage, which is also tragic.
Omg thank you Uncle for your interpretation. OMG I would give anything to have had your Keyboard skills from this. You realize this is from the 70's before Maiden et al??? This Vocal is a Landmark- Iconic Performance!
If you want a similar song from them, check out Run of the Mill from their first album. It also showcases Rob's range.
Finally...the mighty Priest!! 'Beyond The Realms of Death', or 'Victim of Changes' should be next for sure...bring it on!
Judas Priest was the first band that I saw live in concert. It was enjoyable watching your reaction as Rob built the song and hearing the range of his vocals is always a treat. I have to say that this has always been my favorite song from them. Thanks for your great look at this song.
Please listen to Beyond the Realms of Death and Victim of changes by Judas Priest. So much fun to watch your reaction to Dreamer Deceiver/Deceiver. Thanks
Doug I am so happy to see you work this tune(s) out. I have watched many, if not most, of your videos over the past few months and was going to write to you and suggest you taste these two tracks. These two songs are one of my all time favorites not just from Priest, but from pretty much all artists. 30+ years later and a full listen still gives me goosebumps. I love watching you react to these songs, applying your vast knowledge of music and your objective ear. I am so glad you enjoyed what I consider some of the best audio selections around. Thank you.
true tenor indeed. Metal God.
These two songs are my favorite, and the solo is the best solo I have ever heard....Dreamer starts off slow and keeps building ,then Deceiver delivers the goods.....
I absolutely loved you play along.
Thanks Doug...Love Rob...best metal singer ever. Sounds perfect live too.
You did many Iron Maiden. Surprised it took this long for Judas Priest. They are as good as Iron Maiden. Both are amazing and I know Rob. Such an amazing singer. One of the best in rock ever!
Judas Priest fans love the differences in every album from pain killer to rockarolla
The birth of the metal gods, amazing songs on this album
The harmonies Rob creates with those high notes at the end of dreamer are so moving.
Run of the mill from the album Rocks Rolla which came out before that. What a song that is and it really showcases Rob's early vocal acrobatics.
Amazing selection. Two of my favourite tunes of all time. Halford here is not from this world...
So sad that Tipton cannot play the same anymore. His solo on Painkiller was badass.
don't know how i missed this one. definitely my "daily doug" pantheon!
FANTASTIC SONG OFF A FANTASTIC ALBUM. LOVE THIS JAM. GREAT GUITAR WORK AND GUITAR SOLOS
THE VOLCALS BY ROB ARE ABSOLUTELY AMAZING
SUCH A BAD ASS JAM
MY FAVORITE
THE METAL GOD. ROB HALFORD
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Sad Wings of Destiny was a full-fledged 80's metal album, long before the 1980's ever reared its head. A monumental entry into the long, raging, history of heavy metal. Tragically went unnoticed during its time (ca. 1976)
Amazing how many rockers never heard this.
A cara dele de surpresa 😲 foi ótima!
Rob é magnífico! Esse álbum todo é sensacional 👏🏻 👏🏻 👏🏻
Sim. Como eu gostaria de assistir ao vivo antes que eles cheguem ao fim.
If you wanna hear them do an old Irish folk song, check out, The Last Rose Of Summer, If you want to drop your jaw, check out, Victim of Changes, any version will do, but Unleashed in the East, that one floored me, Ripper kicked ass as well!
This and Dissident Aggressor had such a huge impact on late 70's and Early 80's speed metal and thrash, just as I can hear the influence of Stairway to Heaven on this track.
Thanks for not only dissecting the music but also the lyrics. What they have to say is, to me, just as important as how it is being said.
Smoke a j any time with ya Doug. Great song and group
By far the best review video you have made! Rob Halford is known as "The Metal God" and is considered one of the best Metal vocalists.
