Hearing Painkiller as your first Priest song is like downing a straight double whisky as your first ever drink. Most people would ease in with a song like You Got Another Thing Coming. There are heavier metal bands out there but if you're not a full on metal fan it's a hell of an introduction. It's my favourite song of theirs btw.

It was my first too. A friend brought the newly bought album over, the volume knob turned high and the intro blew both our minds. We had the shittiest little grins for days. Good time.
2 years ago for me this was to heavy and I didn’t like it 😂 Metallica was heavy asf too that I didn’t like them. But after a couple months with kiss,led zeppelin, motley Crüe and van halen. I remember hearing raining blood and actually loving it, that’s what got me into metal. Now Judas Priest and Metallica are my favourites. Funny how just a little time can change your whole opinion
When introducing someone to Metal, you might as well show them the anthem of the entire Metal genre.

He does all the backing vocals himself. Rob Halford is a very versatile singer. The man has many voices. And they're all great!

Their early song 'Victim of Changes' (studio or live), would most definitely give you the perfect example of Rob Halford's amazing vocal range and unique expression.
Another great example would be "Dreamer Deceiver" live at the 'Old Grey Whistle Test' from 1976 to show his vocal range.

He's so pitchy on victim of changes. Non singers always lose it for that song but it's seriously mediocre, at best.
I'd choose the live The Sentinel over Victim of Changes every time.

This whole album (Painkiller, 1990) is a face-melter, start to finish, perhaps their best album of all time.
This new one will be one also, if the released songs are any indication. Very much the energy of all their best albums and songs throughout the years. I'm amazed at it even tho I expected it being a solid album
Pain Killer is one of their greatest CDs. And the latest, Firepower is phenomenal! 50 years and Priest is still Killing it!
I saw them on the Painkiller tour: when Halford hit those screams, we all felt the fillings in our teeth started to loosen and feared head bursting scene from "Scanners" might ensue on a mass scale. 🤯 Insane vocalist, one of the all time metal greats. Live version of "Victim of Changes" is also a great showpiece.
I saw that tour, too. My left ear has never been the same.
With Megadeath opening. I remember when they did "Living after Midnight" and I saw the spots playing over the crowd and everyone so into it, it was like being in a music video.

I saw them on tour with this too, it was my 3rd time seing the Priest and the best. My neck was sore for days afterwards!! It was their true prime here. Also after the two albums before this, I wasn't looking for much but DAMN!!

I love diction in a singer. Rob Halford is British Steel precision and diction is his middle name. From the rolling r's to the stick the landing t's. He's fantastic and has a large vocal range.
This song is so ferocious. The whole album is a masterpiece. Not only creatively, but sonically. This album sounds just so perfect. It has 30+ years but it's so modern, just like it was recorded yesterday. It's ageless. And it came out just at the right time. Just when everybody thought heavy metal was dead, was finished. Thanks Chris Tsangarides (RIP). No one could top this song. Not even them.
My favorite album of all time since I first heard it 17 years ago. The perfect album, not a single bad song in it.

@@heffernanca I really didn't. I am a huge fan of the Scorpions and Klaus Meine (especially when he gets less metal and more crooning, like in Wind of Change, Holiday, or Still Loving You). Thing is, he's not at his best in the more metal or harder songs. It's the softer stuff where he really shines.

Best Rob Halford vocal performance, in my opinion, is “Blood Red Skies.” The lows, the highs, the gruff, the sustained notes - such a beautiful and emotional performance. Gives me chills.

Let's be truthful here. Rob is nowhere near this kind of vocals anymore. He's still a good singer, but his upper register is gone.
@@jonstiffer4994 He can still pull off screams here and there but yeah I think the Ram it Down tour was the peak of his vocal range. The version of Sinner he did on that tour has the highest screams he ever did.
Halford is in his 70s now and still sounds good. Victim of Changes, Diamonds and Rust and Screaming for Vengeance are all fantastic examples of his vocal dynamics. 🤘🏻🍻

This isn't a vocal comment but, I love your videos. I was a recording engineer in Virginia Beach, Virginia in the mid 1980'. In 1985 Scott Travis was the local drumming legend. He booked a Friday night at my recording studio Magic Traxx. I hadn't heard him play by that point. He actually blew me away that night. I remember listening to him play from the control room as we were recording thinking this guy just needs his big break! We were recording a demo tape for him to take to Los Angeles to see if he could make it in the record business. He actually told me that night he didn't want to just be a rockstar. He wanted to be the drummer for Judas Priest. This song was the first record with Judas Priest. The drum riff has become one of the most iconic drum parts of all time. He is the longest serving drummer for them, 34 years now.Dreams really do come true sometimes.
Side note Scott is almost 7 feet tall and a really nice guy. He first played for Hawker when he got to Los Angeles. Then another Iconic band Racer X. \mXm/

@@HalfUnder He graduated from Granby High School in Norfolk. He played all the venues in the Tidewater area. I don't remember all the bands he played with back then but, I do remember "Prophet". I don't know if it's still there but, The Brass Rail comes to mind it was at the bend in the road on Oceanview ave. in Norfolk in the Oceanview area and there was a club across the street from there that he played. Also there used to be a big rock club near the Virginia beach ocean front called the Crystal near 17th street. My studio was kind of behind Abby music store on Witch duck rd. but, it was really on Cleveland st. across the street from the cable company building. When Judas Priest came to Hampton Colosseum in 1982 for the Screaming for Vengeance tour, he wanted to set up his drums on the sidewalk and just play hoping someone from the band would see and hear him play and tell the band to check him out but, he changed his mind. Even after he was in Judas Priest he had a house behind the cinema and draft house in the Pembroke area. I remember doing live sound with him at a club in Petersburg Virginia with his old bandmates right after he played Rock n Rio in 1992 where the crowd was estimated to be half a million. There was maybe 15 people there :^)

I only discovered you about ten days ago when I watched your reaction to Metallica’s “One” and you have quickly become my favourite “reactor”.
Firstly - not trying to judge a book by its cover - you don’t look like a “rock chick” and when you are hearing the tunes, which are often some of the heaviest that the genre has ever produced, you have a look on your face that really looks like horror. And then you confound the listener/watcher by pointing out the technical detail of how much you love what you have just heard, precisely what the singer or other band member has done, and then gone back and listened to it again, often several times. Your reactions really are a breath of fresh air in what has become a rather overcrowded space. Long may you continue!
I remember when this video first aired on Headbangers Ball. It was like getting hit in the head with a brick. And we loved it. We thought we knew what Judas Priest was about, and they changed it all with that one song... again. Like they did multiple before. Judas Priest evolves with the times in a way no other band ever could or will again. They decided to go Thrash Metal, and made Thrash their own. And it never felt or sounded forced. It was just the natural next step for the band.

This is maybe their most "intense" song... Priest went through many eras, many styles... you could spend weeks analyzing all the aspects of this band.
Yes, they are really varried. I have to say this i my favorite though. It's so intense and the polish is there, but doesn't spoil it, it strengtens it. Which is the golden spot for my taste in metal.
I think if i was introducing someone to them, I'd pick Desert Plains as the first song.

This is an excellent interpretation of probably one of Rob Halford's most intense expressions of his vocal range. You absolutely have an ear for outstanding musicians totally loved your interpretative feedback. Some of the early works from Rob Halford appear almost surreal by virtue of Rob's vocal range. Forever a legend.
Live videos from last year are honestly impressive. Halford sounded amazing at 70 years old. It's also crazy that he bends over to hit those notes. Not for every high note in every song, but just for the particular style of highs for this song. ...Oh, and for a recent performance, look up "Touch of Evil 2022 live."

Please consider that this is the most extreme and heavy song of Judas Priest. There are many others that are more melodic such as ""Victims of changes", Living after midnight, Breaking the law, Turbo Lover, Electric eye, etc.
Mostly agree, but gotta say there are deep tracks like "Eat Me Alive" which are definitely in the debate for most extreme.

This is a pretty tough song to start your Priest journey with. It’s often difficult for new listeners to appreciate it.

Rob Halford's voice is very unique. As high register he is for most of this song, in others, like Hell Bent for Leather, he can go so low register as well.
Great reaction video! Your question at the end about if he always sings like this... that's a great pick-up. In most Priest songs, there will be big notes that jump into this range, but it's not often this high from the jump. The voice at the end is more like Halford's "normal" voice. Also, that harmony you picked out in the middle - that's his mid-to-low range harmonizing with himself. And, yes, it's amazing. Listen to that part again for the power of the underneath voice when it hits the big note, and you won't wonder if it was someone else in the band. It's definitely all him. Also, since you said you would rather see a live performance, there is a really good album from the 80's called "Priest Live" that pre-dates this song, but really captures what he does live. There are a few accompanying live videos from it floating around youtube. Here's a good one to see him delivering the full range. A little bit more commercial, I guess. this was 16 years after their first album(Rocka Rolla1974).(painkiller 1990).rob was 39 at the time and still killing the vocals .i seen judas priest about 4 years ago for firepower tour and they still killed it live..it cracks me up that all the reactors start out watching painkiller which is one of the most intense songs...judas priest has tons of hits and most are way different than painkiller. victim of changes is great to see robs vocal range
1. To get the "real" Rob Halford-experience I recommend you start with the "Sentinel" or "Freewheel Burning"-live from the "Fuel for life"-tour/Dallas-DVD. That makes you appreciate the vocals even more! Painkiller was Priest response when everything went in the opposite direction, so this kind of vocals were new even to us Priest-fans! Also, Rob's solo-album "Resurrection"-live with his band "Halford" was called the best Judas Priest-album that Priest never made! 😊 There's a reason he's called "The metal god"!
2. And yes his voice sits lower than you imagined. You should check out "Into the pit" where he goes between high and extremely low. 😊

You desperately need to hear Rob Halford sing his stripped down version of Diamonds and Rust live. You’ll hear the quality of his voice and how he sells a song even at his age. A legend.
Scott Travis' (drummer) first song on his first album with Judas Priest. He gave Priest a kick in the pants heading into the 90s. Lots more Halford to check out. This is one of the more "extreme" songs and always fun to see reactors starting here.
Scott had to prove himself and keep up with Halfords facination with heavier music. He was on a big Pantera kick during this time.

Absolutely epic reaction to one of the greatest metal songs of all time. The first time I heard that drum intro with the guitar slide my jaw literally dropped open. They've been around for a LONG time, and have adopted alot of sounds over the years. This album in particular is filled with great songs.
I see I get to post this saying again. ‘Listening to Painkiller as your first Judas Priest song is like getting fired out of a cannon into a hurricane’.
Typically, reactors have been following this with ‘Victim of Changes’, live at the US Festival, 1983. A truly remarkable performance, that does a much better job of showing what Rob Halford can do.

Rob Halford is renowned as one of the widest-range singers in any genre, but the lower part you mentioned near the end is where he usually lived. Absolutely amazing.
Scott Travis the drummer is a BEAST! Painkiller is the first Judas Priest album to feature drummer Scott Travis, who replaced long-time drummer Dave Holland in 1989.
Rib is from Birmingham, England, same as Ozzy Osbourne. This band was one of the originators of "screaming metal", but he is very flexible in his vocals. He's even done ballads in Priest and other projects.
The albums that probably have the widest range of styles are Angel of Retribution and Nostradamus.
We are witnessing her turning into a MetalHead right in front of our eyes 🤩
Every damn second of this song is pure virtuosity.
These guys were a big part of what created modern Heavy Metal. They were around early on when the genre was still forming and bands were still finding what sorts of styles and sounds work. They ended up being one of the earlier pioneering bands that led the way and inspired many more. They're like grandfathers of heavy metal, most successful bands through the years can trace their pedigree back to Judas Priest.
And to top it off they're still to this day 54 years later able to give a good show and continue being an inspiration to new young talent.
“Dreamer/Deceiver” from the BBC Old Grey Whistle Test is a great early JP representation. Love your appreciation of the intro and instrumentation before you got to Rob.

I LOVE your reaction. Your insight regarding how he double tracked his high “screamy” vocal over his normal register/voice (I don’t know the technical terms) early on in the song was something I’ve never paid attention to, and I’ve been playing this song since it came out in Sep ‘91.
Before this song Rob never did a whole track in that super high scream voice. The man’s back catalogue is a treasure trove of legendary vocal feats.

This is one of those songs that could last a year and you wouldn't grow tired of it. It's simply so packed with drive and energy. This is not one of the greatest metal songs ever. This is one of the greatest songs ever, period.

In the songs "Victim of Changes" (Studio) and "Diamonds and Rust" (Studio) (A Joan Baez cover), Rob Halford takes it down a few notches (for the most part) and shows off a beautiful voice. For the band RUSH, strongly recommend the song "Losing It" (Studio). Just a beautiful song (Violin included) with a very deep meaning so if not for a review at least listen to it for yourself.
Rob Halford of Judas Preist has a 4-octave vocal range (C2-C#6 apparently) and tends to move around those ranges quite a bit.... this track isn't exactly the norm for him but he certainly likes to hit the high notes throughout his songs..... love your reaction to this epic metal masterpiece thanks!

IMO, Rob Halford has the Ultimate Metal voice. You should really check out their Older stuff, back when Rob was younger and had more lung capacity. Stuff like, Victim of Changes, Hell Bent for leather, Diamonds and Rust, Green Manalishi... their older Live stuff really shows his incredible vocal skill and range...

At this point in Judas Priest career, they had been around for 20+ years and this song was a statement made in the early 90's to let everyone know that they still had it! Newer, heavier music was coming out and they just wanted to prove a point. Robs voice has all the ranges. check out 70's (Victim Of Changes, Beyond The Realms Of Death), 80's (Desert Plains, Before The Dawn, Blood Red Skies). These are slower songs that showcase Robs voice through the years.

An ideal performance for a vocal analysis is the live performance of Dreamer/Deceiver & Deceiver (Two separate tracks making up two parts of one song) from The Old Grey Whistle Test back in 1975. The performance takes you through pretty much every dynamic of his voice from full chest range, to bridge, to a strong high mix, to his scream register you hear through most of this.

I still remember how "our" group of Priest fans was blown away when listening to Painkiller (the song) for the first time. Priest brought us to Metal in our teens in 81 and was on the way of losing at lot of fans at the end of the decade. Remember after the "experimental" Turbo album ("they can do this" - once), the band released "Ram It Down" which received a "critical reaction that was fairly negative" (Wikipedia). Well, Stock Aitken Waterman producing a Priest record? So the expectations for the new album were low and hopes high. And then, they gave us this brutal, unique, ferocious, epic song. Wonderful.
check out the studio version of Fever. He's got the most angelic, warm voice you've ever heard. He's probably one of the top 3 metal gods when it comes to vocalists.
I seen 2 shows of their 2018 tour with Deep Purple. This song is so killer live.❤ and Rob Still screaming and hitting those high notes at 70 yes old. My number 2 band. Victim of Changes is an excellent choice for his vocal range, which I believe Rob has a 4 octave range.
