Its a great movie the gambler with james caan.
Best gambling movie ever. Hands down, and it's not even close. For those who understand the undertow of gambling, this movie nailed it.
Nice critique
great movie!
I agree. RIP Mr. Caan.
Excellent movie, and MUCH better than the later remake...especially with the character/background actors and being set in NYC in the 1970s. (Burt Young, steals his scene as the collector for a loanshark)
Compulsive/addictive gamblers who watch this movie feel/know what Axel Freed is going thru and the actions he takes. Non-gamblers would say, "why didn't he wait and give the money he now had to the loanshark?", while compulsive gamblers can get uncomfortable watching this as it reminds them of them doing similar stuff and the results.
Members of Gamblers Anonymous (a self-help group for compulsive gamblers) were consultants on the the movie and the end of the movie was supposed to show a crawl reading: "The next day, Axel Freed attended his first meeting with Gamblers Anonymous....."
Thanks for your interesting comment. (Spoiler alert: Most viewers probably wonder why he’s doing this and I liked how Caan basically sums up his compulsion near the end: It’s all about the juice.)
@@thekazdoyclosetwithjerryka1013 It is about the juice and hopefully the rush. Remember in "Heat" the Tom Sizemore character tells the DeNiro character he wants in on a bank robbery, (even though he doesn't need to)
as that action provides the juice he needs.
@@diego-search Forgot about that. I definitely need to rewatch Heat. Thanks!
At the casino , Cann says its over. Notice the the light fixture over his head, its a HALO
Good call!
Hard Eight by Paul Thomas Anderson is also excellent. Rounders with Edward Norton, California Split with Elliott Gould. The Cooler with Alec Baldwin and William Macey.
The Hustler is imho the ultimate gambling movie. The Cincinnatti Kid is pretty good, but a bit too slick. Still very enjoyable ,with a great cast.
