    My first introduction to James Caan was in Misery, so I've been retroactively exploring his earlier work. Excited to watch this one soon!
    I was telling a friend of mine that stories of addiction are so bittersweet to watch.
    I appreciate the rawness of them and how compelling they are to experience, but it's equally devastating knowing the eventual outcome in so many of them. 🙏🙏🙏

      Thanks D! Absolutely true. Compelling and devastating in equal measure. I guess they can serve as a stark warning. Gambling apps are everywhere these days, and I imagine it's so easy for people to get trapped into losing bags of money at the click of a button. Hopefully these cautionary reflections strike a chord with some and help to save them from a similar fate. Hope you get to see this one soon, it really is a well made movie. Greg.👊

      I thought this one was misery to watch, like almost all of Caan's dark stories. The acting was good, but the subject matter was just portrayed like an after-school special. Exxageratted bad behavior to make a point super clear and teach a lesson. Seemed like no fun, endearing, or funny side of this life was shown, as there is in every other gambling related film. Think "Hard 8 or "Color of Money" or "Rain Man" or even "Owning Mahoney", and so many others. The story ended with a terrible lack of closure. The actors were so unredeemable and lowly, it stretched the bounds of belief. But again, the acting was decent, and now its old enough that the scenes are like a historical fiction. You can have some fun with the cars and the clothes. Just don't stay up late like I did last night, expecting some kind of novel outcome, some kind of new version of the destruction or avoidance thereof. If you just want to see a deep look into the character flaw of an gambling addict, this one does it, although it seems in the real world to accompany a lot of drinking, which was absent here..Of course, maybe that is a takeaway lesson for me ; not all hardcore gamblers just get on the thrill ride over a few hard drinks and use it as an excuse to drink all the time. Some do it all day everyday, stone cold sober, at a wedding, at a funeral, at work, wherever. Thanks

    Excellent movie, and MUCH better than the later remake...especially with the character/background actors and being set in NYC in the 1970s. (Burt Young, steals his scene as the collector for a loanshark)
    Compulsive/addictive gamblers who watch this movie feel/know what Axel Freed is going thru and the actions he takes. Non-gamblers would say, "why didn't he wait and give the money he now had to the loanshark?", while compulsive gamblers can get uncomfortable watching this as it reminds them of them doing similar stuff and the results.
    Members of Gamblers Anonymous (a self-help group for compulsive gamblers) were consultants on the the movie and the end of the movie was supposed to show a crawl reading: "The next day, Axel Freed attended his first meeting with Gamblers Anonymous....."

    I was wondering if the odd ending was explained. I get the self destruction part but it would be too obvious. Gambling is about risk and sometimes recklessness in his case. But there has to be some upside potential.

    • @MoreMovies4u
      @MoreMovies4u  7 місяців тому +2

      Yeah, I'm not sure there are any easy answers with this one. To me, Axel is more addicted to self-destruction than anything, and gambling is the means by which he picks himself apart. Winning only prolongs the inevitable and gambling with his life is the only way he can satiate his desire, or get some juice, as he would put it.

      @@MoreMovies4uthanks for your view. I really enjoyed the movie. The ending seemed odd though and I didn’t care for it. What’s interesting is that the self destructive narrative carries through. What I liked is that pretty much all the people around Caan’s character were reasonable and fair including his grandfather, Mafia leader played by Vic Tayback and the pimp.

      @@MoreMovies4uMy interpretation of the end follows my view of all the people around Caan’s character. Instead of the self destruction aspect I felt that Caan felt guilty that he got off too easy and he was looking for a way to punish himself. He thought the Mafia thugs were going to kick his head in but they didn’t. Even when he got this reprieve his grandpa was willing to still bail him out. He just needed to ask his grandpa. He got what he wanted from the hooker and he attacked the pimp. He was angry at the pimp because he refused to hurt him.

      @@SnowDaulphin Yeah, I think you're spot on. Guilt has a big part of it. No doubt he wanted the pump to hurt him after seeming to get off the hook with the mob. I agree, it is a strange ending, typical of New Hollywood movies in being downbeat and shocking.

      My thoughts....The smile at the end of the movie (when Axel is looking into the dark/dirty mirror & his bloodied cheek) tells me he's now finally satisfied & received his just punishment for his gambling. That scar will prove as a life long reminder of the results of his deeds.
