Are Physical Games Done For?

  • Now that major retailors are starting to move away from DVDs and Blu-Rays, are video games soon to follow? I wanted to look at physical and digital games and what make both formats viable today. This is off the cuff so sorry if my points aren’t as concrete as they could be.
I had a bit of a sore throat when I recorded this so I might sound a bit off. Also I don’t know what happened with the footage at the end of the video but I’m too lazy to fix it.

IDK who paid you to say this, but physical media is the only media you DONT wanna get rid of. Whoever paid you to make this video, is trying to capitalize on the VERY SOON TO BE future where physical media makes a comeback. Because people are tired of not actually owning anything they buy. Get ready for my comment to either get deleted or be ignored xD

I'm glad I've always preferred physical media over streaming

They should let you own your digital media. Like video games you buy on your Xbox.

Outside of Astro's Playroom, all of my games are physical and always will be

While having a phisical collection is "cool" to display and have it, there are more important reasons to keep a physical media as a choice. With a physical game you dont depend on the servers of a companny to be able to download it or play it, you can just pop it in your console, probably install it and you are good to go. I know some games are completely useless without an update because they have early glitchy builds or its flat out unplayable without a day one patch (cyberpunk), but that is not the case with all games, for instance "game of the year editions" like the ones found in the tomb raider games (shadow and rise) you have the latest update in disc with all its dlc, even when square servers arent available anymore because crystal dynamics was sold 2 years ago. Other example will be the spyro reignited trillogy, this game is infamous for having only the first game in the disc, while the other two needs an update..... but the was a reprint in 2019 wich has everything on disc (the 3 games and all updates) and this copies are far more common than the early ones. This aren't "rare" examples, for instance almost 70% of the ps4 library is completly playable from start to finish without any update, just the info that is already on the disc.
There is nothing wrong with buying everythin digital, some people just play the hottest new game, finishes it and moves on, but some of us wants to be able to go back and play it again in anny given moment. There is nothing wrong with a "digital future", what its wrong is that YOU DONT HAVE A CHOICE ANYMORE IF ITS ONLY DIGITAL.
You mention the longevity of them using as an example your 3ds copy of smash bros. This is the reason why people install custom firmware on their consoles, you are able to have comple control on your save files and the rom of the game, you can make a back up and use the digital copy instead of you physical one to avoid wear (this has become something important to consider if you own something from the 7th generation of consoles or older). Also saying that installing custom firmware is "hard", fortunately thats not the case annymore, due to the anticonsumer practices by all de videogame companies, this tools have become really easy to use and troubleshoot, the community also are far les aggresive with begginers compared to the old days, right now if you have a problem, somebody already put an answer to it or somebody will help yor.
If you have that physical medium you can make a copy, if its digital and you console breaks, unless the servers are still up and your account is accesible, you are doomed (stuff that aren't in your hands)
The point is not to try to convince everybody to be full physical of full digital, its to have a choice on the stuff that you bought.... and right now that choice is banishig. This goes even beyond videogames, we cant jump from this to the right to repair movement, which has affected farmers, car owners or even people with type 1 diabetes with insulin pumps.

The 3ds cartridges have a battery inside of them that might be the problem you may just need to replace the battery

I constantly get reminded why digital media is absolutely horrible for everyone, you don't own it, you can't back it up since it's usually a streaming service even the games you "buy" aka rent can't be backed up unless the console is hacked even then doesn't always work and if you can't even if it's a single player game they can just remove it from one day to another same goes for movies and shows which is terrible and infuriating when you are in the middle of a season.
I've started buying everything that I can physically again, I am sick and tired of not owning things I just wish steam would release games physically the only other option is GOG where you can actually back your games up and you own what you buy instead of renting ( There are so many downsides to digital like if you sold your switch and you only had digital games, they are now worthless since you have to factory reset)
Plus if the internet goes out or you go somewhere without wifi you are screwed you can no longer sit back and enjoy a good episode of friends while relaxing on a vacation.
I backed up my old games and now i bring my storage with me to my friends and we play retro games on his steam deck together with his gf.

Digital *is* the only way to actually own something. You don't seem to realize that physical cartridges and CDs are nothing more than DRM as well. Yes, you can resell the thing and basically do whatever with it, but you're still heavily restricted by the on-board DRM as well as the fact it's tied to specific HW, HW which is only getting more rare and harder to obtain by the day.
If I buy a game on GOG I truly own it. I can do whatever with it, I can make a dozen copies if I so desire. You meanwhile are tied to a fragile physical storage medium which on top of being copy-protected, is sometimes designed to fail, as is the case with some cartridge games which have batteries inside of them. Eventually you won't be able to save anymore and/or the in-game clock will stop working. At that point you'll be forced to open up your $500 game to try to replace the battery. You don't own your physical games, but I own my DRM-free copies.

But they can't go in and delete it. Unlike if it's on your physical disc. If you have a DVD play can't delete that stuff on the DVD. So would you rather give them the ability to delete it off of your computer which has happened before. It's going to be kind of hard for them to physically come to your house to steal the DVD.@@imaginarymenageriemanager6303

One look at the world and streming services and even freaking videogames *cough cough* ubisoft *cough* can clearly see its a beyond bad idea, digital can be even more useless when the publishers can just say, remove it, preservation of media even beyond games is important

  • @celtic1842
    @celtic1842 2 місяці тому +1

Yeah and you won't own anything. When they decide to delete your collection. Because they're tired of hosting it on the server and want you to buy new stuff. Sounds awesomelol

Games are now events, like concerts -- not things you can keep forever. Deal with it or refuse to participate in the marketplace.
