Are Physical Games Done For?
Переглядів 7042 місяці тому
Now that major retailors are starting to move away from DVDs and Blu-Rays, are video games soon to follow? I wanted to look at physical and digital games and what make both formats viable today. This is off the cuff so sorry if my points aren’t as concrete as they could be. I had a bit of a sore throat when I recorded this so I might sound a bit off. Also I don’t know what happened with the foo...
Rambling About the Wii U and 3DS

While the Wii U was a very flawed console and the 3DS had its limitations, I love both systems and I have some great memories from when I used them. Since the Nintendo Network is now shut down, I thought it would be fun to talk about a couple of reasons why they mean a lot to me. The footage from Smash Wii U and Splatoon (the third clip) are from the last few days of the Nintendo Network, and t...

Do You Remember SpeedRunners?

Editor’s Note: I realized I never brought up TinyBuild Games, the publisher of SpeedRunners. It’s more likely they would have a say on a sequel. I think it’s very unlikely since they’re focused on other series, but not impossible. SpeedRunners turned 10 earlier this year, and since no one ever talks about this game anymore, I thought I’d say something. Music: Coming soon Other Footage: Coming soon

    This is the game that started my absolute love of the series. I agree, it's a tough game to go back and play now due to all the other games feeling much better to play but it's a great experience, especially being the last game I played with my brother before he stopped playing video games. Even as a 10 year old I could see how well crafted an experience it was. Great video and look forward to seeing the rest of the series

    Melee still beats current Smash in almost every category >Best gameplay even just from a casual perspective >Best single player modes (same as Brawl) >Best overall soundtrack with many unique choices for stages that would become staples thanks to Melee >Pretty much every stage is fun to play on with the exception of maybe Icicle Mountain >Most of the trophies were made specifically for the game and there's tons of weird picks you probably didn't know of before >Items and Pokémon are hectic and fun without being overpowered and still requiring some skill to use well >Being developed when it was, means no character had their "standardized" modern looks, so everyone is basically higher fidelity versions of their 90's designs Every Smash after is basically quantity over quality, and it kind of ruins the charm when so many Trophies, Stages, Songs, etc. are literally just lifted from other games. Sometimes for better or worse.

    Not only can ReDeads pop out of Party Balls, Crates and Barreld randomly in Vs matches but also the other Adventure Mode enemies such as Goombas, Octorocks, and Topis from the Ice Climber stage, can even pick up these enemies with Z and toss them at your opponents for heavy damage and knockback, honestly that random chance of enemies showing up should’ve been a mainstay in future titles.

    Wavedashing, teching, l-cancelling are _not_ bugs lol. Wavedashing even has its own name in the coding if I recall correctly, and it was originally intended as a fancy way of landing on the stage. It got removed in Brawl and Smash 4 because it wasn't intended to be a central movemet mechanic (as well as creating an artificial skill barrier to a degree), and wavedashing/landing have since returned in nerfed forms in Smash Ultimate along with directional airdodges. Teching/l-cancelling are carry overs from smash 64. L-cancelling was called "Smooth Landing" on the Japanese Smash page for 64 and was actually nerfed in Melee, reducing recovery frames on landing using an air move by half in Melee whereas it removes them _completely_ in 64. Which is why 64's competitive scene is completely bonkers with touch of death combos and shield breaks. Teching is not a bug in any way, shape, or form, and exists in literally every single Smash game. In Melee, like so many other things carried over from 64, teching was expanded so that you could tech on more than just the floor. Ceilings, walls and even the sides of stages. All 100% intentional. Tech chasing isn't even an "advanced technique", and it's something that my friends and I did from the beginning with 64; all tech chasing entails is trying to predict where someone is going to roll to and punishing it. Literally a fighting game tactic. Chainthrowing is not a bug either, but it's definitely an oversight, as the worst offender for chainthrowing, Sheik, had her chainthrow patched out in the PAL version of the game. Other things were changed too in Melee's only balance patch, which the competitive scene ignores due to the nature of NTSC and PAL. Brawl somehow had way worse chainthrows, outside of Wobbling (because holy crap that one is outright unfair) Jump cancelling is not a bug, but it does make Fox and Falco... ridiculous 😅 Melee in fact has plenty of bugs, but none of these things qualify. Thankfully most of the bugs aren't gamebreaking, but they are funny. I think my favorite is Bowser's giant hand 😂

    13:55 The Cloaking Device also doesn't make you take damage. You still take the knockback if you're hit, but your percent doesn't go up. It's also something that the AI players will drop everything to go pick up.

    Hope nobody's too annoyed I walked away not thrilled from the direct. It was a lot better than I expected, just a lot of stuff didn't I care about personally. Very happy for Metroid fans though. What was your favorite part of the direct?

  • @nerdzone
    @nerdzone 22 дні тому

    They no longer feel DIRECT. Sure, there are more cool announcements than ever (because Switch has more games than ever). But I miss authors sharing their outlooks on the games directly, being pationate about their games. I miss some of the admittedly childish skits. It feel super corporate now. Yeah, NIntendo are a corporation, I did not just realise it. That does not mean that they should be bland and sterile.

    • @nerdzone
      @nerdzone 22 дні тому

      My favourite presentation each year is Devolver presentation. I rarely play anything Devolver and would almost certainly not care for their games I see, but I am glued to the screen, watching day 1 nonetheless. Why? Because they allow themselves to be goofy and imaginative. That's something that Nintendo stopped doing in the Switch era. And as succesfull the console is, as bad the Directs are. Directs now are just a bunch of trailers. You could easily upload only the trailers after the presentation and you would not lose that much.

    • @JordiumZ
      @JordiumZ 20 днів тому

      The new directs are much better and you idiots said the samething when nintendo started doing directs over on stage presentations

    I feel the same way about the directs. Some of the current ones are FIRE, some are sleepers, but I’ll ALWAYS miss the old ones with Reggie, Iwata, and everybody else in them. I made my own video about the old magic of nintendo too about a month ago and it’s one of my best performing videos so it’s pretty safe to say a bunch of other people agree too lol. Great video man 👍🏼

    While having a phisical collection is "cool" to display and have it, there are more important reasons to keep a physical media as a choice. With a physical game you dont depend on the servers of a companny to be able to download it or play it, you can just pop it in your console, probably install it and you are good to go. I know some games are completely useless without an update because they have early glitchy builds or its flat out unplayable without a day one patch (cyberpunk), but that is not the case with all games, for instance "game of the year editions" like the ones found in the tomb raider games (shadow and rise) you have the latest update in disc with all its dlc, even when square servers arent available anymore because crystal dynamics was sold 2 years ago. Other example will be the spyro reignited trillogy, this game is infamous for having only the first game in the disc, while the other two needs an update..... but the was a reprint in 2019 wich has everything on disc (the 3 games and all updates) and this copies are far more common than the early ones. This aren't "rare" examples, for instance almost 70% of the ps4 library is completly playable from start to finish without any update, just the info that is already on the disc. There is nothing wrong with buying everythin digital, some people just play the hottest new game, finishes it and moves on, but some of us wants to be able to go back and play it again in anny given moment. There is nothing wrong with a "digital future", what its wrong is that YOU DONT HAVE A CHOICE ANYMORE IF ITS ONLY DIGITAL. You mention the longevity of them using as an example your 3ds copy of smash bros. This is the reason why people install custom firmware on their consoles, you are able to have comple control on your save files and the rom of the game, you can make a back up and use the digital copy instead of you physical one to avoid wear (this has become something important to consider if you own something from the 7th generation of consoles or older). Also saying that installing custom firmware is "hard", fortunately thats not the case annymore, due to the anticonsumer practices by all de videogame companies, this tools have become really easy to use and troubleshoot, the community also are far les aggresive with begginers compared to the old days, right now if you have a problem, somebody already put an answer to it or somebody will help yor. If you have that physical medium you can make a copy, if its digital and you console breaks, unless the servers are still up and your account is accesible, you are doomed (stuff that aren't in your hands) The point is not to try to convince everybody to be full physical of full digital, its to have a choice on the stuff that you bought.... and right now that choice is banishig. This goes even beyond videogames, we cant jump from this to the right to repair movement, which has affected farmers, car owners or even people with type 1 diabetes with insulin pumps.
