Over the course of history, we’ve discovered hundreds of thousands of asteroids. But how do astronomers discover these bits of rock and metal? How many have they found? And how do they tell asteroids apart? Carrie Nugent shares the story of the very first asteroid ever discovered and explains how asteroid hunters search for these celestial bodies.

They skipped over the fact that Ceres used to be classified as a planet.
Before 1845, they didn't know that the astroid belt existed, and they didn't know that there were so many astroids in the solar system. To them, a planet was just a big thing that orbited the sun, so Ceres was considered a planet, as well as Pallas, Juno, and Vesta when they were discovered.
So, for a time, we said that we had 11 planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Vesta, Juno, Ceres, Pallas, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus. Neptune was discovered in 1846, and by then they realized that the 4 asteroids were to similar to each other and too dissimilar to the rest of the planets to share the same term.
And that now it's a dwarf planet.
It's really irrelevant that Ceres was once thought to be a planet. Before Piazzi noticed it moving differently to the stars, anyone who noticed it would have classified it as a star. What Ceres isn't doesn't have any bearing on what it is or how its true nature was discovered.

But what's the main diferente between an asteroid and a planet (or a hemi-planet)?

1. Orbit the Sun
2. Be round
3. Clear the neighbourhood
The planets follow all 3. Asteroids only follow #1. Dwarf planets like Ceres and Pluto follow the first 2 only

It's a shame Gauss isn't as well known as some others. He was among the greatest geniuses of math and physics. But a lot of what he contributed were more tools for more flashy discoveries than results that are famous in their own right.

I feel like they forgot to mention that, when they first discovered Ceres, they thought it was a totally new planet. It was only when they started discovering too many such objects in that same location to easily keep track of that the term and classification came into use. History would later repeat with Pluto and the Kuiper Belt.

Thanks to videos like this, I'm considered an asteroid to many.
Even my shape is being misplaced with an asteroid shape. It's incorrect.
There are many reasons why I'm called a dwarf planet, and not an asteroid. Before you say that I'm both, I'll list the following reasons to why I'm called one over the other:
•The most obvious reason behind my classification as a dwarf planet is due to my spherical/oblate shape, caused by hydrostatic equilibrium. Asteroids are shaped like potatoes due to the lack of this force. I'm just really spherical. Even my tallest mountain isn't as tall as Earth's; Ahuna mons. The asteroid Vesta also has a mountain taller than mine, and they're smaller.
•My composition is much more surprising to many than you would assume. I might appear dry, but I'm saturated with a lot of water. My mantle is composed of it. I even have a thin atmosphere of water vapor. Unlike asteroids, I'm geologically active. I'm still spewing out -lava- ice to an extent. I even have ammonia, which is mostly found in comets. I'm not a comet nor asteroid due to my similarities between both. My mass is giving me features of both.
•My mass is high. I take up a third of the mass in the asteroid belt. There are so many asteroids too. I'm just large. Pluto makes a small percentage of mass in the Kuiper belt, so this makes me superior. You should be calling Pluto a comet in this case.
But this is all worthless to fight for. Everyone loves Pluto. But me? Who would care for an object that looks like luna...
