    Prolonged space travel plays a severe toll on the human body: microgravity impairs muscle and bone growth, and high doses of radiation cause irreversible mutations. As we seriously consider the human species becoming space-faring, a big question stands: even if we do break free from Earth’s orbit, can we adapt to the extreme environments of space? Lisa Nip examines our odds.

      Well think of this, space travel will take hundreds of years. It would take over 900 years to go to the closet earth like planet with the technology we have. Also if you are born in space you're muscles will not be as a strong so gravity will kill you due to blood flow. We still have lots to learn about space and long distance travel

      ***** if you are asking why scientists dont just start human geneome testing is because they would be shut down and they need funding which is often a university or company and those tend to not like controversy. The military might be testing it without public knowledge but that tends to fall in the darker side of science

    Maybe use these tools to end obesity rather than just make it socially acceptable..?

    • @_t03r
      @_t03r 7 років тому +12

      Well, conservation of energy is a law of physics, that we cannot break. So people either need to reduce their energy intake (eat less calories) or increase their energy consumption (exercise). (Hint: the first is usually much easier) It's matter of behaviour/psychology, not of biology.
      So, yes, the biggest problem is the social acceptance of obesity. Most people would call a person with healthy weight "skinny" nowadays, and the figures in this video are not helping.

    • @_t03r
      @_t03r 7 років тому +6

      +Slyphus Lacreme
      There might be genes that influence your appetite or how well you digest food, but in the end eating less than you burn will ALWAYS lead to weight loss.
      Edit: So let me clarify this. Some people will find it harder to loose weight, since they suffer from a stronger feeling of hunger, but everybody can come to a healthy weight by eating (and drinking) on an adjusted diet.

    • @tktktktktk826
      @tktktktktk826 7 років тому +6

      +Slyphus Lacreme Genetics has almost nothing to do with obesity. There are some studies that show it does but that's only because kids adopt the eating habits of their parents. If your parents raised you properly, you shouldn't develop shitty eating habits and you shouldn't be fat especially at an early age.

    • @_t03r

    The most difficult thing about genetic manipulation in sentient beings is not whether it should be allowed, but whether it should be imposed upon those who grow into it. The most dramatic changes that could be achieved would be through manipulation of Zygotes, not fully grown beings capable of making informed decisions about such changes to their genetic code and possible side-effects that could greatly effect their well-being and wuality of life

    Why not produce spacesuits that counteract low gravity by filling them with super dense materials therefore giving our bodies the sensation of earth gravity while also possibly blocking radiation at the same time? I know I can't be the first one to think of this, just curious. Does anyone have an answer?

  • @_ch1pset
    @_ch1pset 7 років тому

    I think they're thinking too hard on the microgravity problem. I think the simplest most efficient way of working around that limitation is a centrifuge, an artificial gravity habitat. Every time I hear this idea being dismissed, it's because of the false assumption that a centrifuge that does just that would have to be insanely big and would be prohibitively expensive to launch. That's just not true, another way would be to tether 2 pods or habitats together and have the whole rotate around the center of the tether.
    Another thing to consider is, who ever said that the centrifuge needs to house the entire habitat? While I have no basis for thinking this, we'd need more research, but maybe we could have a very small centrifuge that the astronauts would sleep in. That way they wouldn't get motion sick, and it would also make it easier to sleep. It could be just enough to help reduce or even nullify muscle and bone loss due to lack of gravity. If this were the case, the centrifuge would probably only have to be about the size of the carnival ride "Gravitron", maybe even smaller, and spin at a much slower rate for a measly 1G(the ride supposedly hits you with 3Gs).

    The most troubling aspect of bio engineering humans is not fear of the unfamiliar or fear of competing with such people for jobs or resources. You compete with lots of people already for jobs and resources and will be too old to be a direct competitor to a bioengineered person who will be born 20 years in the future. You can get used to something new or even a new type of person.
    No, the most troubling aspect is whether or not this person is really a human (if you insert DNA from a fungus) or is really your child (if you mix and match the DNA of let's say 5-10 people to make the best possible combination.)

    Wouldn't it be better to concentrate all the efforts on developing artificial gravity and efficient barriers to radiations? In this way everyone would be able to travel through space, and not only those who have been genetically engineered.

    This video is discriminating towards non fat non-male and non curly-haired people, every individual expressed is a fat female with curly hair. The fat curly-hair matriarchy is here.

      sushanalone maybe they want to make fat curly haired women more appreciated, seeing that the world favors mainly men and beautiful skinny women

    The proprotion of discussions about the potential implications of human genetic altering in the comment section here compared to the amount of discussions on why the ficticious animated characters in the video are fat is why we're not in space yet. People have their priorities so so wrong.

    That sounds like great opertunities, but gene editing, like most big technologies opens a door to misuse and destruction if not used/regulated corectly, a good example is nuclear fusion/fission: great for generating power, also great for destroying cities. There are a lot of such 'dangerous technologies coming into our reach in the next centuries like nanobots, general AI, bioprinting and maybe in the long term things like anti matter. All of this things hold the potential to move our civilisation forward by a significant distance but in order to avert the malice they could bring over us we should start developing legal and ethical regulation methodes now alongside these technologies. But our current economical and political structure will make things exponentially harder if not impossible. So we are pretty much doomed in the long term if things don't change fast, I also believe that these technologies are the barriers explaining the fermi paradox. How many civilisations might have nuked themselfes out of existance or have fallen prey to biological weapons or superbugs before reaching the stars? We can't even predict how many more is waiting for us unseen by our current understanding of the universe. I am by no means saying that we should crawl back into caves but I think if we want to survive the next century we have to learn to work together for the sake of our civilisation and not just for our own, and I don't see this happening anytime soon...

    • @sarukun1228

      Starting at 2:36
      "Melanin exists in many forms across species, and some melanin-expressing fungi use the pigment to convert radiation into chemical energy.
      Instead of trying to shield the human body, or rapidly repair damage, we could potentially engineer humans to adopt and express these fungal, melanin-based energy-harvesting systems.
      They'd then convert radiation into useful energy while protecting our DNA."
      via Google:
      "Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, some bacteria, and some protistans use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar, which cellular respiration converts into ATP, the "fuel" used by all living things."
