  • Explore the probability of a future pandemic and the steps we can take to reduce its destructiveness.
    --
    We tend to think of pandemics as unlikely events, but disease outbreaks are surprisingly common. Over the past 400 years, the longest stretch of time without a documented outbreak was just four years. So, what’s the probability of experiencing another world-changing pandemic in your lifetime? Explore the likelihood of a future pandemic and the steps we can take to reduce its destructiveness.

    • @varyolla435
      @varyolla435 Рік тому +1

      Yes/No. Yes human interaction facilitates spread of infectious organisms - BUT - those pathogenic organisms = still must come from "somewhere". About 75% of infectious illnesses which afflict man are of "zoonotic origin" - meaning they began in animals to spill over into human populations.
      So the main driver of zoonosis is our continued deforestation of land resulting in our encroachment into previously wild areas + our consumption of animals - often under less than ideal conditions + our use of animal byproducts - such as the harvesting of bat guano for fertilizer as an example + and things like wet markets which throw together multiple species in proximity that allows the viruses of one to infect others and mutate from there. Remember that in the wild many species avoid others normally as opposed to living next door to them. So lots of reasons I'm afraid with our own population only being one part of a larger puzzle. 🤔

It maybe best to put in motion a international populated, limited "occupant" land mass region that has extremely limited to basically non interaction with the rest of the global population. An island? Best if possible. A difficult remote mountainous location? Still workable.

    Absolutely - probably more than one. This above all else is what people need to keep in mind:
    *About 75% of infectious diseases which now afflict man = are of zoonotic origin*
    Moral of the story: the Earth's population grows. We are increasingly deforesting areas to make room for us and to increase agricultural output. Lastly we consume animals - often under less than clean conditions.
    Ergo we via our actions increasingly come into contact with other species and that "overlap" sets the stage for zoonotic transmission leading to both existing infectious pathogens getting a foothold into human populations as well as new novel ones forming. This all but assures at some point another "breakout" occurring. It then becomes a question of do we vaccinate and eliminate possible "contamination" - or do we simply sit back acting surprised when it occurs = as it inevitably will at some point? 🤔
    p.s. - the SARS-CoV-2 virus is mostly bat DNA. We consume bats and harvest their droppings and thus we are constantly encroaching in their lairs. A bat is the only mammal that flies. That makes them unique as far as zoonosis. Being mammals what afflicts them more readily also afflicts us. Yet because they fly - which means they have high body temperatures and a high metabolism = any viral pathogens which form on them can survive body temperatures above what we ourselves can generate in defense of infections. Ergo it becomes difficult for our immune system to counter zoonotic viruses capable of surviving high body temperatures such as would kill us.

    • @someguy2135
      @someguy2135 Рік тому

      You"-We are increasingly deforesting areas to make room for us and to increase agricultural output." Animal agriculture is a major cause of deforestation. "While the wildfires raging in the Amazon rainforest may constitute an “international crisis,” they are hardly an accident.
      The vast majority of the fires have been set by loggers and ranchers to clear land for cattle. The practice is on the rise, encouraged by Jair Bolsonaro, Brazil’s populist pro-business president, who is backed by the country’s so-called “beef caucus.”
      While this may be business as usual for Brazil’s beef farmers, the rest of the world is looking on in horror.
      So, for those wondering how they could help save the rainforest, known as “the planet’s lungs” for producing about 20% of the world’s oxygen, the answer may be simple. Eat less meat."- CNN
      Another reason they burn the Amazon is to grow soy. "More than three-quarters (77%) of global soy is fed to livestock for meat and dairy production. Most of the rest is used for biofuels, industry or vegetable oils. Just 7% of soy is used directly for human food products such as tofu, soy milk, edamame beans, and tempeh." -Our World in Data

    • @someguy2135
      @someguy2135 Рік тому

      "A meat-eater’s diet requires 17 times more land, 14 times more water and 10 times more energy than a vegetarian’s, according to research published by The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This is principally because we use a large proportion of the world’s land for growing crops to feed livestock, rather than humans. (Of the world’s approximately five billion hectares of agricultural land, 68% is used for livestock.)
      This squeeze on resources is only set to intensify. In 50 years’ time, the UN predicts there will be 10.5 billion people on the planet (the current world population is around 7 billion). To feed us all, it says, we will need to grow food more sustainably. Dr Walt Willett, professor of medicine at Harvard University, says we could eliminate the worst cases of world hunger today with about 40 million tonnes of food - yet 760 million tonnes is fed to animals on farms every year." -BBC Good Food

    • @varyolla435
      @varyolla435 Рік тому

      @@someguy2135 The issue of chronic malnutrition and poverty is as always one of a lack of dissemination of what we currently produce. Ergo it is not that we do not generate enough food to feed the global population as we do. It is one of = not everyone can access what is grown.
      With the advent of improved agricultural techniques and fertilizer use UN estimates for food production indicate we will continue to grow enough food to conceivably feed everyone despite a growth in global population. We simply have to = get it to where it is needed. As an aside. Man will never go meatless. I agree however that so much land dedicated to animals is a waste of resources.
      This issue here vis a vis zoonotic transmission is not "what" land is used for = merely that we continue to deforest and hence encroach into areas not previously seen on such levels before. That invariably leads to zoonotic "spills" occurring. We need to move away from wet markets and forgo use of animal byproducts when better alternatives are available. If food production was moved out of the streets and homes to controlled facilities a lot of the threat could be obviated. 🤔
