This was actually my third favorite anime adaptation. Only behind One Piece and Ruroni Kenshin. I thought they did a good job packing in a much as they could. Cast was solid too. Toguro was as cool as he should be.
It was ok. But some who have watched the anime may find the live action as lacking and too short. 5 episodes is not enough to cover the spirit detective saga up to the battle with toguro
Like koemena having a pacifier is like his last resort and like yusuke had no just got revived and no one even questioned how or why or what they just accepted it and rushed it and they expect us to be happy hiei eye is just a whole other thing they botched him as a character and the character used his special technique but didn’t even say what it was or how it worked or anything like also they kinda make buei if that’s how it spelled a joke didn’t even mention why he wore the armor
It's really weird that every character has to say their own speech before making a move, that someone has to explain their ability that that person has massive power or running out of energy. That works well in anime/manga but not in a live action.
I've been expecting to see small Koenma, But Honestly Dis appointng, Flying Botan with Broomstick was not their too . It's Ultimately Different Story Telling. So Anime Vs. Live. Action - DIFFERENT STORY, DIFFERENT FEELING.. Overall Live Adaption was Good Enough when comes to actions Scenes. AMAZING 😻
Well I love it for what it is. It is still a faithful adaptation, and the changes were necessary because it feels like I am watching a full length movie rather than a series. The fight scenes between Karasu and Kurama is my favourite.

They shorten it way to much for an anime of 112 episodes. They are skipping so much like the Genkai tournament, the 4 Saint beasts and the dark tournament. Only 5 episodes and they already went through two seasons of the anime is way to fast. One of the best Arc was the dark tournament and skipped it. Toguro shouldn't come until season 2 to set up the dark tournament. What season one should of did was the Genkai tournament and the 4 Saint beasts.
@@TheRubyTuesday OK??? We're not talking about CGI. He was making fun of their budget went to CGI because the CGI was very good. The comment is about the adaptation to the anime into live action was poorly done. Why One Piece did so much better is because the have many episodes to one Arc that makes it easier to shorten the story Arc without skipping anything important where Yu Yu Hakusho anime that I watched so many time are short Arc stories compared to One piece.
I won't say it's terrible, but I won't say it's great either. But it's there. I enjoyed the pace of the first 3 episodes in terms of the storyline. However, the last two... I didn't even feel bad for Genkai, ngl. But if we put aside the scenes that were missing, it's actually good enough. They did justice to the fight scenes. And if they get another season with a better budget and more episodes to develop the characters for the audience, it might turn out much, much better. Also, in the anime, I loved Kurama, but here, Kuwabara grew on me. Yusuke's good too.
We need a tournament. I see they skip passed the dark tournament and geinki death wasn’t as important or impactful. I understand the anime ends in a tournament so I’m hoping some teams and ppl from the dark tournament makes it to the last tournament since they switch the story. But man no dark tournament hurts.
The live action was absolutely awful. I get they tried to smoosh as much as they could with the time they had, but you only get a disappointing mash of garbage when you do it like this.
its one of the best vintage anime that was able to handle the emotions properly so I"m happy even if this series has the 50% of the emotional effect in me
As an anime watcher the netflix adaptation was decent. Tbh 5 episodes were not enough.... 10-15 episodes would have done the story better. The actors i think were great so with more episodes this could have been a really good show. Its ike diet Yu Yu Hakasho
It was a Solid great show ! All things considered even if they made an abridged version usually Anime live actions at times are ass! From the west One piece from Japan Fable both movies Kenshin all movies Hakusho on Netflix alice in borderland ,Ichi tha killer etc
The live action is good but the 5 episode season 1 is not enough. They've cut a lot of anime scenes as if they don't want to create a season 2 for this. If ever there will be a season 2, for sure they'll also cut a lot of anime scenes.
Its not cool, its too mainstream looking. It just doesnt have vibrancy. The monsters and action is cool, but some actors need to be replaced. Also why did they change the child boss...
i think as long as you come into it thinking of it as more of a "tribute" instead of a straight adaptation, you will be presently surprised. Given all the restrictions such as the budget and trying to cram 70 ish episodes worth of character building and story development into 5 episodes, id say they did a pretty good job. There are obviously many things to criticize if you only wanted a 1 to 1 adaptation, but you can tell they made a genuine effort to make it all flow and keep the soul of the original series. Keeping everything in mind, id give it a very solid 7/10
The live action is trash. One of the most insulting adaptation I have ever came across to. Stupid revisions, break neck pacing that ruined epic moments and total removal of the dark tournament. Seriously, how tf did they messed up so bad?
i enjoyed it. i love the action and the cgi effect, it actually wasn’t bad for me. my only complaint is , it’s too damn short and condensed from the anime should’ve been damn longer.
I never seen the anime but some how the trailer has always been nostalgic itself because it was on a tape or dvd trailer line up that used to watch over and over. Can’t remember which movie it was attached to though. This is like early 2000s and im 22 now. I feel bad for never watching this anime but I definitely will, I enjoyed the live action. They made it short I think because they didn’t think it would get a second season
Im good with this.. even though the last half looks rushed in case of the plot because they took a whole dark tournament out and character progression.. but its alright.. satisfied enough for the fight scene better than one piece less than a minute combat. something i expected for the black cats and arlong...
They Skipped Jin, Chu & The 4 Heavenly Beasts. I honestly hoped for the exact opposite for it to be even slower than the anime with more exposition. But here it was so short and low budget and Koenma had no comedic elements, botan didn't have an Oar, Yuske Ghost Nver Flies and we didn't even see Genkai Training the GOAT Yuske on the rock-climbing scene. We got to remember One Piece live action is the exception and unfortunately not the standard yet
I wanted to like this live adaptation soo badly lol. I’m a huge Yu Yu Hakusho fan, but honestly it’s horrible. It felt very rushed and heavily condensed. Some anime shouldn’t be transferred to live action and that’s just my personal opinion. The fight scenes were pretty cool though and the costume designs I liked. They missed the opportunity to play smile bomb for the intro oh well. This adaptation is a 7/10 at best
They combined the first demon tournament with The rescue of the girls. I mean what do you expect them to do, mimic every anime episode scene for scene? Spike Spiegel. Why was that assumed just because its an Anime? Ignorance kills too you know
I think I understand why it was changed. Because it looks ugly, funny and outdated. The hairstyle was once popular among Japanese Yankees and gangsters, but this is 2023, not many people have that style anymore. It's like when you go out on the street now and see someone with messy hair like Taiwanese Idols but in the 90s.
Actually love Yu Yu Hakusho it took me awhile to be able to find the uncut version of the show. Because I remember when originally aired a lot of episodes was cut out and censored
sorry to say but it not good as the anime it not good it was done gopod but the house and the tornament the miss a lot of stuff i think it need be done with the anime as it is other change was not good
Not sure if it's regency bias or what, but after having just binge watched the whole thing, I might actually like it more that the Ruroni Kenshin adaptation.
With only 5 episodes I think that made a pretty damn good adaptation. YuYu is one of my favorite animes of all time and my only gripe I have is I wanted more I felt like this was just an appetizer and I'm hungry now lol. I want the sacred beast arc and them to go further into adapting Botan and Keiko's survival against infected humans/principal chasing them on earth. The actor who played the principal was spot on from the anime even. I liked what I got but they need to go back and cover pieces they missed in either season 2 or movies, just something man lol
Well the full meal is going to be rather small, considering they condensed so much in 5 hours. I found it terrible they removed so much. This is 10 times more condensed than One Piece. Several arcs in one. Nope from me.
The manga is exceptional oc. The anime is good. And the live action is OK. Should never skip the tournament lol. Well I do understand the budget is tight unlike any Lucas creations with unlimited budget.
Yeah wasn't a fan, SUPER rushed, too much cut story content that really fleshes the characters out. They combined way to many arcs. The CG was terrible 90% of the time. I went in with low expectations on this one & as I figured still disappointed, but I'm a big fan of the anime & knowing the cut stuff just makes it more frustrating. Maybe people that are not familiar with the series will enjoy it more, but I'd imagine with the pace being too fast it would make it difficult for them to. It definitely looks like they didn't plan to make another season for arguably the best arc in the series even. It feels like such a waste.
I’m a 90s baby born 1993 and I’ve watched the anime 3 times I love it but I will say for what it’s worth the live action for what they had for a budget is good in my opinion but it could of been better but I like it alot
Also the actors played the roles incredibly, just wish they didn’t rush it. It’s kinda funny because the creator of the anime rushed the last season because his health was declining
People always say both - it's the best or the worst. I experienced shows who everyone said was horrible as really good and the way other around . Listening to other people is useless . You just miss our or get stuff you don't want . Or the other way around.. that's life
Yuyu hakusho live action seem was made for audiences who's only in for the actions and fighting thrills and doesnt mind too much of the full story of the anime....that's what i felt! But If you are looking about the full complete story then the anime and manga is the option to choose.
I'd be ok with the 5 episodes if they made Kurama, Hiei, and the other demon the final boss or even until Genkai's mini tournament as long as there was character development and good writing. I guess corporate had a hand in it and forced the Toguro team to be included even if the story development was trash. If you're easily impressed with cgi and fight scenes then this series is definitely for you. But if you're hoping to get the classic Yu Yu Hakusho magic/soul, just skip it and save your time.
What I don’t understand is how they’re making avatar and they made one piece phenomenal and judging by the comment section in this thread, it sounds like this one is a dud. I of course will hold my opinion until after I watch it it’s been quite a while since I’ve seen this anime, so I’m gonna go in with an open eye, no expectation, kind of vibe and we will see
They wasted most of the budget on that VERY flashy spirit gun. Most of the emotional scenes fall flat because the lack of world and character building.
I just got done watching it in I hated the fact that it was only five episodes and a rush through a lot of the story. Plus I'm not asking for much but they could have at least given us at least 14 episodes
It was on point, in many ways even a better version than the anime. Especially story-wise. I always felt that the anime was severely lacking in this, I rewatched the anime for the first time since I was a kid, and my opinion was confirmed. However, character-wise the live action drops a few balls. Bùt, they also did a few better. Definitely another good adaptation. It's time the community stopped being so negative about them.
in many ways your perception has accepted mainstream quality. It lacks vibrant color, the acting can be a lot better, actors should be replaced, and they are changing the looks of the boss baby character..

@@Eden91590 lol, you think the anime is a well written piece of fiction? Lol. It's a great idea. It had a great start. Then just rushed from one thing to the next because the author wanted it to end. With one of the most rushed endings ever. The live action tells a more linear story, with a clear objective and goal. Another thing the anime was cheap on sharing details on. Before that you're just tossed in some random tournaments I think you need to either study on writing, or go watch the anime again. they shorted it by allot so much so things a bit out of whack, so far seems quite disappointing with so much left out, i hope people take the time and actually watch the anime it is so good. there were some fights i would have liked to see in the live action that werent given a chance
I’m disappointed. I love the series and I can see the effort the team put into it. But how much this show is rushed is a disservice to the source material. I love what they’ve done and feel like if given more time it could have been incredible. This is already a rather short anime so for them to crunch so much in 5 episodes is disappointing
feels like it was rushed... tournament arc are very important for for the chars..because it tells the development of their individual power.. disappointing
Not enough episodes, rushed through the story, awkward dialogue and completely removed of emotional impact, the comedic banter between the main characters and building up to the fight with toguro. Anime does it way better and it really isnt the dark tournament but the first interation between yuske and toguro and then shoving dark tournament elements into it. Yuske getting orb was an enormous ordeal in the anime as oppose to here ya go. I enjoyed the fighting at the end but overall a poor adaptation.
As expected, the show was good, but nowhere near the original anime. Unfortunately, too condensed and rushed and Keiko is now a boss lady instead of a distressed damsel. Otherwise, surprisingly great show! 7.5/10

This was actually my third favorite anime adaptation. Only behind One Piece and Ruroni Kenshin. I thought they did a good job packing in a much as they could. Cast was solid too. Toguro was as cool as he should be.
I wish that we had a Dark tournament.. but everything shown was good. I just wish it was longer with more story like the anime.
It was ok. But some who have watched the anime may find the live action as lacking and too short. 5 episodes is not enough to cover the spirit detective saga up to the battle with toguro
I see what you mean but honestly I feel this was more of a tribute than trying to be a one-on-one adaptation
I will always rewatch the original, but this is actually pretty cool
Yusuke's accident was more harrowing than the original Manga
They adapted it the way I expected and the story flowed for the better since this is most likely a one and done.
This live action of yu yu hakusho is very good, nothing else to say.
It was good. Yusuke actor settled in me from the get go. They made effort, but too condensed
Not really. He needs to make more jokes and being more of an a-hole, but other then those things it seems okay
It's really weird that every character has to say their own speech before making a move, that someone has to explain their ability that that person has massive power or running out of energy. That works well in anime/manga but not in a live action.
I've been expecting to see small Koenma, But Honestly Dis appointng,
Flying Botan with Broomstick was not their too .
It's Ultimately Different Story Telling.
So Anime Vs. Live. Action - DIFFERENT STORY, DIFFERENT FEELING..
Overall Live Adaption was Good Enough when comes to actions Scenes. AMAZING 😻
It was very not bad. Like everything else in life it needed more Kuwabara.
As a loyal fan and watch this once a year. I fucking hate what Netflix did to it. Wtf!
Honestly it's not the best but it's also not the worst.
Well I love it for what it is. It is still a faithful adaptation, and the changes were necessary because it feels like I am watching a full length movie rather than a series. The fight scenes between Karasu and Kurama is my favourite.
I have no idea how you can claim it's a faithful adaptation
Faithful adaptation?
You're drunk. I lost count of the many stupid revisions that ruined epic moments in the manga/ anime.
@@adrian_veidt please read along the lines. If you don't like it, please don't rain on someone's parade. And if you have nothing good to say, keep your comments to yourself or better yet make your own comment.
@@escaperaccooncity392 There is a difference between saying you like it and saying its a "faithful" adaption. You can like it, but its not a "faithful" adaption
@@vickerfinaljust because the story is condensed and pretty much cut a lot of things doesn't mean its no longer a faithful adaptation. It is "still" pretty much tells the same story, and it is not a loose adaptation.
I understand people you want dark tournament but you need to know it can cost money and work hard Im fan of the show you should give them good credit it not easy they want to know how many people will like it and they might make seasons 2 that how it goes it costs money and for the people and the location to
Honestly this was meant to be a one-time thing 😅 More like a tribute
They shorten it way to much for an anime of 112 episodes. They are skipping so much like the Genkai tournament, the 4 Saint beasts and the dark tournament. Only 5 episodes and they already went through two seasons of the anime is way to fast. One of the best Arc was the dark tournament and skipped it. Toguro shouldn't come until season 2 to set up the dark tournament. What season one should of did was the Genkai tournament and the 4 Saint beasts.
Cgi is too expensive bro lol
@@translateme9352 😆 🤣 good one
Cgi was pretty good actually @@matthewrenault7839
@@TheRubyTuesday OK??? We're not talking about CGI. He was making fun of their budget went to CGI because the CGI was very good. The comment is about the adaptation to the anime into live action was poorly done. Why One Piece did so much better is because the have many episodes to one Arc that makes it easier to shorten the story Arc without skipping anything important where Yu Yu Hakusho anime that I watched so many time are short Arc stories compared to One piece.
@@matthewrenault7839perhaps I got the wrong end of the stick. Apologies
It was compressed story like other live actions but still greatful.
I get they tried to smoosh as much as they could with the time they had, but you only get a disappointing mash of garbage when you do it like this.
its one of the best vintage anime that was able to handle the emotions properly so I"m happy even if this series has the 50% of the emotional effect in me
hiei looks like a goth rooster and i couldn’t get over it
Honestly it would look better if he had his hair down😅 they were trying to be too accurate
I would say it is Good they made it Short but the Fights and effects are Good.
As an anime watcher the netflix adaptation was decent. Tbh 5 episodes were not enough.... 10-15 episodes would have done the story better. The actors i think were great so with more episodes this could have been a really good show. Its ike diet Yu Yu Hakasho
Great review mate I agree 5 episodes is not enough
If you're going to barely have any episodes they could have at least given us 12 episodes
I feel like this is a one season thing and this was more for a tribute
Its not cool, its too mainstream looking. It just doesnt have vibrancy. The monsters and action is cool, but some actors need to be replaced. Also why did they change the child boss...
I'm def watching it then, thanks for another great review!
Any time! Thanks for supporting and watching
They change the story not what we expecting...
I like it compared to one piece live action. OP is very boring from start to finish.
i think as long as you come into it thinking of it as more of a "tribute" instead of a straight adaptation, you will be presently surprised.
Honestly I agree with you this felt like more of a tribute so I don't see multiple seasons 😅
SUZAKU MISSING IN ACTION . TOURNAMENT NEVER GONNA HAPPEN, KILL MAJOR CHARACTERS EARLY .
Just watched episode 1 it feel story is fast paced beside the action scene
Thanks Netflix! My favorite cartoon TV series back in my college days. It's a 10/10 for me! Excellent adaptation.
10 episodes they could’ve actually done a good show
They Skipped Jin, Chu & The 4 Heavenly Beasts.
This should have been the 4 saint beast saga. Thats it
I wanted to like this live adaptation soo badly lol.
As a live action series. got to be reasonable. better then One piece and Cowboy Bebop. but if your a stickler then so am I, for wondering why they have a Japanese actor play a Jewish Character with obvious Jewish hair. Spike Spiegel. Why was that assumed just because its an Anime? Ignorance kills too you know
“Horrible” and 7/10 don’t really go together. lol, that’s a good score for a tv show.
Is better than one piece the CGI the fighting they make tuguro big just like in anime and look real than arlong in one piece trash lol
I get that things need to be cut back, but Kuwabaras missing pompador hairstyle!?? 😂😂
😂😂
That's honestly the thing I wanted most! 😂
Hey Ruben , ThanksMuch for posting !
sorry to say but it not good as the anime it not good it was done gopod but the house and the tornament the miss a lot of stuff i think it need be done with the anime as it is other change was not good
Not sure if it's regency bias or what, but after having just binge watched the whole thing, I might actually like it more that the Ruroni Kenshin adaptation.
If they were only allowed 5 eps I wish they ended it at before meeting Genkai or something instead of rushing all the way to the end of Toguro
Honestly, it feels like I'm watching a fan made movie of cosplayers. Overall, it's still good.
That's very harsh 😭
@@TheRubyTuesday That's how I see it specially the last episode lol. Hiei and Kurama really look like cosplayers.
Or the other way around.. that's life
this is a good live action adaptation. comparable to rurouni kenshin live action specially the fight scenes!
Yuyu hakusho live action seem was made for audiences who's only in for the actions and fighting thrills and doesnt mind too much of the full story of the anime....that's what i felt! But
If you are looking about the full complete story then the anime and manga is the option to choose.
The should have did 4 seasons. Rando and 4 saint beast; toguro and dark tournament, shinobu then raizen and demon word tournament.
best adaptation since rurouni kenshin
I'd be ok with the 5 episodes if they made Kurama, Hiei, and the other demon the final boss or even until Genkai's mini tournament as long as there was character development and good writing. I guess corporate had a hand in it and forced the Toguro team to be included even if the story development was trash. If you're easily impressed with cgi and fight scenes then this series is definitely for you. But if you're hoping to get the classic Yu Yu Hakusho magic/soul, just skip it and save your time.
They shortchanged Grandma. She is a important part of the show, they needed to go more in depth with her character
good 7/10 ..still nothing beats Samurai X live action, I cant feel the cosplay aura from the characters
What I don’t understand is how they’re making avatar and they made one piece phenomenal and judging by the comment section in this thread, it sounds like this one is a dud. I of course will hold my opinion until after I watch it it’s been quite a while since I’ve seen this anime, so I’m gonna go in with an open eye, no expectation, kind of vibe and we will see
The comments are very mixed actually
@@organicwins91 the one who needs to change their perspective is you, dude.
I watched, then amateur reviewed, a live action adaptation.
You seem to be under the foolish idea that you were supposed to watch a copy.
Go google what 'adaptation' means.
Id.ots online changing the definition doesn't change sh.t. They're just mor0ns that think they know better than a dictionary.
Also, a TÒN of people claim they watched the anime, but they're lying. Just people using anime with legendary status to gain some credibility. At most, maybe 20% who say they did, have actually seen it. Of those 20%, maybe 3% watched it recently.
1 thing's for damn sure; few to none zoomers will have seen this. They're the biggest liars in this community. These are the people that are HYPERFOCUSED on animation. These are the people losing their fkn minds for WEEKS if they find a small error in animation.
But these people watched old ass anime from the 80's and 90's? Come on, man.
They started this trend of claiming you saw things you never did just so they can openly hate on live action adaptations, another online trend. Just like the lying.
This community has become one build on lies and deceit, ever since zoomers took over.... and the only reason they do this, is because their FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) is constantly on high alert.
Ya'll don't even see, let alone realise, that you're destroying everything that previous generations have build up.
This was better story wise than the anime? That’s an opinion I guess? Not a good one imo but sure. There is nothing added to story in the live action, just things left out..
We literally only get Yusuke's "goal/destiny" in the final 18 episodes.
Before that you're just tossed in some random tournaments
I think you need to either study on writing, or go watch the anime again.
It's good, but the legendary status people online give it is fiercely overrated.
At best, it's mid-tier.
People just use old anime online because they think they win credibility if they can list them. It's stup.d.
Like all these zoomers; OBSESSED with high budget animation and flipping out over every tiny mistake in animation; these people watched an anime from the 90's?
Come on, man. Who tf even believes that bs? Maybe 3% actually did watch it, probably only 0.30% that finished it.
The anime trended on netflix for like 1 day, couple weeks ago.
You can't finish Yu Yu Hakusho in 1 day, not even the first arc.
Just a whole lot of posers in this community. I really don't understand why. There's no shame in not having watched something, and no title for having watched it. So idk why you people obsess and care so much that you'd lie for it.. :/
honest rate:
live action one piece 8/10
live action ghost fighter 5.5/10

*guess this was made (rush mode sequence) before one piece live action was released
*and now they realize their mistake of rushing things---one piece live adaptation is far superior than this

I really liked it. I hope for a season 2
Japanese productions should create anime live action adaptations. They just need the budget
The live action is good , but Hia is quite dissappointing.
Live action is garbage.
I MEAN IF GODZILLA IS BREAKING HOLLYWOOD THIS IS 10 TIMES GODZILLA.
I hated it so much. There are villains that should appear from s2 onwards, and they crammed all in s1
they shorted it by allot so much so things a bit out of whack, so far seems quite disappointing with so much left out, i hope people take the time and actually watch the anime it is so good. there were some fights i would have liked to see in the live action that werent given a chance
After rewatching it I like it
I’m disappointed. I love the series and I can see the effort the team put into it.
But how much this show is rushed is a disservice to the source material.
I love what they’ve done and feel like if given more time it could have been incredible.
This is already a rather short anime so for them to crunch so much in 5 episodes is disappointing
It was for people who never seen yu yu Hakusho action locks coll but there's no see growing strength them just get powers to fast and to easy
They should have gave yuske his training outfit though

i thaught the first ep was one of the best movie i seen.
So true! Yusuke getting the orb in the anime was so much more impactful and emotional.
OK sounds promising
As expected, the show was good, but nowhere near the original anime.
Unfortunately, too condensed and rushed and Keiko is now a boss lady instead of a distressed damsel.
Otherwise, surprisingly great show! 7.5/10
Huh 😅 boss lady
