Mahalo for the lyrics My best friend and brother in law had this song taped on a cassette and we'd cruise around kona listening to this and I never found out who sang it nor the name of it. This was in the 80s. My bro passed away. I finally found out about this song after all these years. So glad
Probably ,"submarine lover in a sinking world" but I don't know for sure. Had "Country Life" back in the 70's and played it many times. Here I am listening to this for the first time. Ironic as ever.
One of my favourite versions of the song. The pace of the second part contrasts with the first better than the faster versions, it gives the second part more gravitas too. The Rickenbacker bass rumbling away is a little slice of heaven too.
Been watching this Comment for four months and only one other comment is posted... Bro. I've listened to this song on cocaine for hours, enjoying, deciphering, crying and loving. I guess this song is my alpha and omega and I got led zeppelin tattooed on my body... Never not loving this tune. Just wrote this to appreciate you guys Best regards from Germany

[26 January 2021] Roxy Music in their heyday were hotter, sweeter, and *purer* - more romantic, more passionate, more driven - than any of the guitar-schlock that so-called "classic rock" radio stations play. Oh how I wish someone would have the nerve - the bravery or the wit - to play "Mother Of Pearl" on the radio, for a change. Even if they only played it late at night...
@@elizabethhann4028 It depends on what kind of music and or station you listen to. If you listen to pop then your best bet is WNCI 97.9 and you will probably hear the current top 40 songs. If you like rock,I usually listen to 99.7. The Blitz. And they usually play the top 20 or so most current hard rock songs. If you prefer classic rock then your best bet is Q - FM 96.3 and you will hear quite a few classic rock selections. Anything from The Doors to AC DC to The Cars to Led Zepplin. All kinds of good stuff. We also have a couple of Alternative Rock stations here in Columbus,Ohio. I can't remember the names or station frequency but this is where you would more than likely hear some Roxy Music. Take care and keep rockin.......🎧 🎶
I did! KCSB 91.9 FM. UC Santa Barbara 1983-84 overnight show. Played lotsa Roxy. But yeah I think I remember mainstream rock back then you'd maybe get Love is the Drug or Aint That So or More Than This ... but very little from their more "dangerous" period. Now? LOL. Imagine Dragons is cutting edge :)

@@parisensore True. And Sal Maida played a Rickenbacker, as we see in the video. Gustafson (an awesome bassist, who played on the records) played a Wal bass, I think.
@@chriscampbell9191 Interesting to follow all the different Roxy touring bassists over the years. Definitely Sal Maida in this video. Bryan Ferry has stated some of his favourites in interviews and has mentioned John Gustafson and Alan Spenner (maybe others too). Always my intention
So I take my time

I've always wanted
But was never mine
But now I've seen that something
Just out of reach - glowing -
Very Holy grail
Oh mother of pearl
Lustrous lady
Of a sacred world
Thus: even Zarathustra
Another-time-loser
Could believe in you
With every goddess a let-down
Every idol a bring down
It gets you down
But the search for perfection
Your own predilection
Goes on and on and on and on
Canadian Club love
A place in the Country
Everyone's ideal
But you are my favorita
And a place in your heart dear
Makes me feel more real
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't change you
For the whole world
You're highbrow, holy
With lots of soul
Melancholy shimmering
Serpentine sleekness
Was always my weakness
Like a simple tune
But no dilettante
Filigree fancy
Beats the plastic you
Career girl cover
Exposed and another
Slips right into-view
Oh looking for love
In a looking glass world
Is pretty hard for you
Few throwaway kisses
The boomerang misses
Spin round and round
Fall on featherbed quilted
Faced with silk
Softly stuffed eiderdown
Take refuge in pleasure
Just give me your future
We'll forget your past
Oh mother of pearl
Submarine lover
In a shrinking world
Oh lonely dreamer
Your choker provokes
A picture cameo
Oh mother of pearl
So so semi-precious
In your detached world
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't trade you
For another girl

@@mildredsparks6684 Makes it all the puzzling.
My favorite Roxy song!
Ferry is such a cool guy, he could have been a great 007 James Bond or a Doctor Who. Charisma and aloofness to burn.
But could James Bond have made a great Bryan Ferry?
Ferry is much greater than those clowns.
Nothing and no one compares to this/them/him. Mesmerizing.
ive always loved this band but this period of their music trips me out better than anything and Phil Manzaenera is so creative and sensitive.
He is a GENIUS
The musicianship of Roxy are exceptional and in particular Phil on guitar who mastered his instrument and helped to define Roxy's unique creative output and timeless songs which have sculptured a generation.
This song is a masterpiece, and the performance here is superb. Nothing like it before or since.
This song is so 🔥🔥🔥
It kicks off at the climax, for which I interpret as one living in the fast lane. Partying, doing drugs, etc
Starting at 1:23 the party is over, and we get some of the most self-reflecting lyrics in the history of rock.
Stoned as fuck, heavy lids and eye liner sweating through a tuxedo. What a man. Reminds me of my ex.
(Turn the lights down)
Way down low
(Turn up the music)
Hi as fi can go
(All the gang's here)
Everyone you know
(It's a crazy scene)
Hey there just look over your shoulder
Hoo hoo!
Get the picture?
No no no nooooo!
(Walk a tightrope)
Your life-sign-line
(Such a bright hope)
Right place, right time
(What's your number?)
Never you mind
(Take a powder)
But wait a minute who's this here coming round the corner?
Hoo hoo!
Have you a future?
No no no noooooo!
[blistering guitar solo]
Ah!
Well I've been up all night again
Party-time wasting is too much fun
Then I step back thinking
Of life's inner meaning
And my latest fling
It's the same old story
All love and glory
It's a pantomime
If you're looking for love
In a looking glass world
It's pretty hard to find
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't trade you
For another girl
Divine intervention
Always my intention
So I take my time
I've been looking for something
I've always wanted
But was never mine
But now I've seen that something
Just out of reach, glowing
Very Holy grail
Oh mother of pearl
Lustrous lady
Of a sacred world
Thus: even Zarathustra
Another-time-loser
Could believe in you
With every goddess a let down
Every idol a bring down
It gets you down
But the search for perfection
Your own predilection
Goes on and on and on and on
Canadian Club love
A place in the Country
Everyone's ideal
But you are my favorita
And a place in your heart dear
Makes me feel more real
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't change you
For the whole world
You're highbrow, holy
With lots of soul
Melancholy shimmering
Serpentine sleekness
Was always my weakness
Like a simple tune
But no dilettante
Filigree fancy
Beats the plastic you
Career girl cover
Exposed and another
Slips right into-view
Oh looking for love
In a looking glass world
Is pretty hard for you
Few throwaway kisses
The boomerang misses
Spin round and round
Fall on featherbed quilted
Faced with silk
Softly stuffed eider down
Take refuge in pleasure
Just give me your future
We'll forget your past
Oh mother of pearl
Submarine lover
In a shrinking world
Oh lonely dreamer
Your choker provokes
A picture cameo
Oh mother of pearl
So so semi-precious
In your detached world
Oh mother of pearl
I wouldn't trade you
For another girl
Not all heroes wear capes
Mahalo for the lyrics
My best friend and brother in law had this song taped on a cassette and we'd cruise around kona listening to this and I never found out who sang it nor the name of it. This was in the 80s. My bro passed away. I finally found out about this song after all these years. So glad
Not "Your choke-up provokes"? 😕
But btw, thank you.
Probably ,"submarine lover in a sinking world" but I don't know for sure. Had "Country Life" back in the 70's and played it many times. Here I am listening to this for the first time. Ironic as ever.
I've loved listening to this song over different periods of my life because it always reveals a new meaning for me.❤
Thank you humanity when discover music❤Thank you my friend Greetings from Greece 🇬🇷
One of my favourite versions of the song. The pace of the second part contrasts with the first better than the faster versions, it gives the second part more gravitas too. The Rickenbacker bass rumbling away is a little slice of heaven too.
Absolutely the best live performance ever in forever
I saw this tour as a 16 year-old with some older friends. Back then, I'm not sure I really appreciated it for how great it truly was.
Smooth sod, that Bryan Ferry.
Roxy music. The definition of timeless music.
This guy is the definition of stage confidence
he's more like the definition of rich coke head but yes ...
Just wrote this to appreciate you guys
Best regards from Germany
@@lucalone Yes indeed
@@adrianpaeslack1644 Much appreciated bruh
Bowie just had "That extra something" on stage. Ferry has it too.
Art rock at its best. Mid 70s and still fresh as new
I simply love this music 🎶
Such great lyrics; a truly unique band.
Why did it take me until my 51st year to know this video existed? Why did it take so long to find a/the video for one of my very favorite pieces of music? I am better now.
"Thus even Zarathustra, another time loser" lol Ah, so much ability and so much will to please.
Yes,that would be awesome.
Until then we have to listen to the 20 songs they play on rotation over and over again.
@@gabecuster4381 [21 February 2021] Thanks for writing back. Glad you agree. By the way, which twenty songs do they play in rotation where you live?
@@gabecuster4381Yep , Planet Rock play the same old stuff over and over again, the 60s,70s 80s was a minefield of music!
Phil manzanera shredding it on guitar!!😮
They didn't call him the Cuban Flamethrower for nothing!
he is so underrated
I can never understand how Roxy/Ferry were never as big worldwide like Bowie , and this is coming from a massive Bowie fan !
Ikr! And Bowie called Ferry his favourite writer ❤ He was so right about it!
Bowie, hype and style over substance. Just what the public wanted.
@@ColtraneTaylor only hype now ,when he was alive not enough!
@@mikewest1542 It kind of started to take off in the late 90s when the 70s came back in fashion. And then he did his "come back".
Hands down the best version of the best song of the 20th century. Magnificent
so fucking cool !! this is beautiful poetry... I haven't listened to this for so many years now, and it reminds me just how much talent has gone before, that we should enjoy, rather than the vacuous crap which is so prevailant today
Absolutely. Poetry of the rarest brilliance. I’ve been binging on this song for weeks and the words get me every time. Sublime.
This is the greatest song on Earth
John Gustafson's bass is absolutely brilliant. The three albums he played on were Roxy at their peak.
Sal Maida I think on this performance. Also i agree JG's bass is amazing on all those albums!
@@parisensore No Sal Maida on Roxy wiikii
@@rr-vl7lu Sal was touring bassist with Roxy around '73 - '74. And that's what Sal looks like.
For the 2022 tour, the bass player was Neil Jason who has an incredible CV (Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Brecker Brothers...) as well as playing on some songs on the Flesh + Blood and Avalon albums.
Whoa. I always liked Roxy Music, but had never heard this song before today...My mind is blown. How many years was this before the Talking Heads/ David Byrne?? I never thought I would every accuse David Byrne of appropriating but....I mean...COME ON. I have newfound respect for Bryan Ferry!!!
There’s a lot of Bowie in there too
Ferry at his lyrical best and the band so tight, wonderful performance here
We all bow down. Masters at their peak.
My BEST Song from Roxy
re-make/re-model, also
This Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry song is a bit better imo: ua-cam.com/video/0n3OepDn5GU/v-deo.html
I love this mans mannerism
I discovered this song 12 yrs ago and I never get tired of it.
Brilliant. Ferry remembering the lyrics is impressive, I couldn't do it. Brilliant. Did I already say this song is brilliant? No? Well it is brilliant.
This was filmed the year I graduated high school. It is still one of the best enigmatic, artschool pieces of all time. What a delight....
Just bloody brilliant
I am utterly obsessed with this song and performance. I love every nuance of the song and every hand gesture and expression from Ferry. It is mesmerizing!
Today's music will never last as long as this
Ferry was a Poet and brilliant song writer .
Probably the coolest man on the planet.
At that point in time, probably 😊
Just found this song. Best song ever.
Wow. Sublime. Makes me happy.
most beautiful piece of music to ever grace the earth, nothing else compares... except for scribbles cover of it
What a performance! Roxy Music. Way too cool for school!
I'm with everyone that this amazing
They make it look so damn easy!! What a band!
From one of the three best albums ever made. The others were the first two.
