Wonderful. Annie Haslam_ a beautiful lady with a fabulous voice
Anyone listening in 2024? Love Annie !
I remember feeling that if she had said “Come” I would have followed her to the ends of the earth and beyond
50 years... and she's a contemporary of "Yes" and Elton John's best Album, "Yellow Brick Road". For some reason this group reminds me of "Kansas".
Just come to this because I was whistling 'Northern Lights' so looked it up. Anne has an amazing voice that I'm only just appreciating.
@@Easy-EightI can hear the Kansas sound in this song too.
Yep, absolutely.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph and the wee donkey they could noodle endlessly for England, though! 😂
Pity the logo stay in view constantly. Completely spoils the moment.
The Text on the video really takes the enjoyment away. Great band and song here!
Yes, it's exasperating and stupid!
My beautiful wife of 44 years and I saw this band as our first date. They just don't do music like this anymore.
so very true! What a great first date!
You’re right when you say they don’t do music like this anymore you mean the commercial world. Commercial world is an entertainment field. Do you realize that we have 8 billion people in the world.. of course, people put out quality music that is on a high, artistic level. Of course, people are out there who are extremely gifted just like these people. The commercial world is an entertainment field. It is not a music industry. We were lucky to even have people like this for a little while, they were few and far between most of what they put out it’s just pure entertainment. It wasn’t fair to inspire anyone musically.
Try Chopin.
What a great way, to have a first date !! I am glad I got to see them live, as well. From 1975-1981. Been a big fan of theirs, since I was 17. Am 66 now, and still a big fan.
You should've took her to see Slade instead
I’m from 1962. My older brother was 5 years older. Around these years - say 1974 - he guided me to Genesis (the Peter Gabriel years!), Renaissance, Gentle Giant and the likes. Still listening to those bands today - I guess I can never thank him enough.
I was born in 1964. My older brother was 6 years older then me. He did the same thing. Including ELP, Pink Floyd and Yes. He got me my first Album and it was Renaissance. Oddly my sister who is 5 years older then me got me into Santana, Jefferson Airplane/Starship, CSN. And my dad got me into Jazz and my Piano teacher got me into classical. I got myself into New Wave. Still love Renaissance and ELP etc.
Gruppi di grande creatività, bravissimi strumentisti.
I'm 66 years old and am a HUGE prog fan. This band is one of the reasons why.
Renaissance is great and prog covers a wide territory, but I know of nothing else even slightly resembling Renaissance, do you?
@@Scottlp2 I really don't. Yes, Genesis, etc. had more of a rock component to their music. Renaissance were strictly classical.
@@wadehampton5116 thanks anyway.
I'm 6 years old and not a HUGE prog fan. This band is one of the reasons why.
I am a huge prog fan too!
I had the pleasure of recording Renaissance with our mobile recording studio in a hall in north London. We were producing tapes that were to be shipped to FM radio stations in the States prior to their first US tour. It was a lot of fun and afterwards Annie invited us all back to her place and she made us all supper. Good times
Sounds like fun ...if she is as good a cook as she is a painter/ singer/ writer of music...you must have enjoyed yourself...
Thank you very much for these memories, Robert ! I could never see Renaissance on stage alas (and I discovered them only in 1990/91) but I guess Annie Haslam is a really lovely person from all the interviews I read.
Lucky man !
I saw them at Lenox Massachusetts in that tour. I still sit in the dark headphones on for this song when everyone is asleep
mind blowing---how exciting and fortunate for you all-----what did she make//serve?---i'dve paid thousands to eat beans out of a tin plate with her
What a brilliant band. Their musical arrangements and Annie's angelic voice made this a band you had to see live to appreciate how great they were. I know Annie is still touring, but this original lineup were astounding to see live.
I totally agree. This performance is amazing. I had no idea how good Renaissance was
I saw them live five or six times when they were at their peak; every show was as good or better than the last one. I saw them for the first time when they opened for Climax Blues Band. Truly one of those times when the opening act was head and shoulders better than the feature band.
Keith Relf and Jane Relf were the original singers and guitars (Keith). 1969 to 1970. Keith died playing guitar barefooted electrocuted. It was a good band enjoyable relaxing.
I couldn't agree with a comment more, I grew up in the seventies and got to see them five or six times.I was incredibly fortunate to have seen them during the recording of probably one of best live albums ever made at Carnegie Hall. They were just an unbelievably good band on stage.I will always love this version of Renaissance, every member of the band was extremely talented and contributed to the finished product and Annie Haslam'voice still to this day sends chills up and down my spine.I think I might still be in love with her like I was as a teenager.Definitely one of the best bands to ever trod the boards.
What's great is that she makes it to the Pittsburgh Area every year....either at the Homestead Carnegie Library (they've got an awesome small music hall) or the Palace Theater in Greensburg.
Wish I had seen them live. I wore out my Scheherazade album.
I did that to two of those records. It is so nice to hear them on UA-cam now. I hadn't forgot that beautiful music, and her wonderful voice.
First time I saw them, they were opening for Climax Blues Band. Renaissance was so much better. I saw them six or seven total times; any time they were in or near Indianapolis, I was in the crowd. Every performance was as good or better than the last one I saw. Truly one of the great bands ever.
The most underrated band in the music history.
I wrote something similar above, before I even read your own comment.
Real shit
Not underated by anyone that heard them.
Just not heard by enough people.
Needed much better promotion and press attention at a global level.
Absolutely !!!
It was my secret favorite band, so special, unique and as you said soooo underrated !!!
I’m in tears watching this! First saw them open for the Strawbs at the Tower Theater and was hooked..saw every show they did in Philadelphia after that. Amazing, beautiful shows…. Wonderful memories of seeing them and following them for years. Met Annie at a TV studio show that was aired on PBS, I think I was the only girl in that audience. She was funny and so sweet. Still get goosebumps listening to her voice! Still have all my ticket stubs from the shows. Al Stewart would open for them on some of their tours…I miss those concerts. So great to see these videos now so many years later…
BTW Strawbs not to shabby
I grew up in Philly. We were very fortunate to have great FM radio stations that exposed us to Renaissance and other bands. Very glad to go thru high school in the 1970s.
Saw them at the Towery as well…Annie wore a beautiful pink dress with crystals that reflected all over the theatre. What a magical night! One of my favorite memories. Also saw them at the Valley Forge Music Fair…what a fabulous local venue that was..sadly many years gone.
I seen them open for Al Stewart at the Tower Theater also around 1974

Annie's voice is just phenomenal, she is an opera trained vocalist. Such an amazing voice.
Annie Haslam. Voice of an Angel. Still have crush on her nearly 50 years later.
Me too!
You have competition sir.
@Terry Brown
She has a boyfriend and now lives in Philadelphia. I’m younger so I could still be her toy boy at 66!
Same here !
She can make love to you with just her voice alone. It's that powerful. Am I kidding? NO.
I love hardrock, metal, but my beautiful late wife turned me on to this incredible music. I still love all types of music, but this something......😊 damn!
Thank you Dorene aka Rainbow. In my heart forever.
OMG! I'm 66 yrs old. A true masterpiece! I've been around a lot of music in my life and this song brought me to tears. Thank you!
I heard Prologue and Ashes are Burning when I was a 17 year old student…. They remain two of my favourite albums today, 50 years later…what a voice.. what musicality…simply wonderful
너무 가네요
This group is quite the discovery for me. Brilliant. And what a beautiful, glorious singer!
Welcome to the Renaissance club. I hope you are enjoying it.
Annie's Voice is perfect
Back in the day they were Legend
Classically influenced.
I was 22 when this was performed. Loved them back then and still do, and I am now almost 72!!!
Without UA-cam some would not hear this music. Thank you for posting Renaissance. Long overdue.
Thank you for this video. Big prog fan. The more the sound the better the music.
😍💗 Erinnert mich so an etwas, dass ich nie erlebt habe, aber erleben wollte. Jahrgang 66.
Ich war noch ein Kind. Aber mein Freund war auf einem Konzert und schwärmt immer noch davon.
💯 right James!
Incredible.. great video and sound compared to all others I've seen. I love watching Jon Camp on bass.. From an interview with Jon : "I spent a lot of time with Stanley Clarke and he can knock spots off me, but once we were sitting on a plane and he said to me, "I might be faster than you, but I could never be as melodic as you." I thought that was really nice and we had a wonderful time together."
My best friend played me this album in 1975. It was one of those occasions when I had to buy the album after hearing it. That happened a lot when I was a teenager. There was so much great music in those days, It was how I got into Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Deep Purple, Zeppelin, and Mike Oldfield.
I fell in love with them in High School. I saw them live in 1984.
Phenomenal. I never get tired of their music ♡
Annie Haslam, the voice if an angel! And Jon Camp, what a great bassist! My favorite song by them!
Me too!
They were all fine musicians 😂😂
Back in 75 I was moving on from my posting to another life's journey. My housemate wanted to exchange one remember me album. He got Edgar Winter, and I got Rennanisance Live. Fast forward almost 50 years, the album is just as potent, powerful, and persistently my ear orgasm. It is true we lived and loved and laughed in the best music era of all time.
Terry
I'm so glad I was fortunate enough to discover this band back in the 70s...living with their music for all these decades. What a gift! Annie has long been my favorite female vocalist; angelic, ethereal, yet at times folksy. While her male compatriots were amazing musicians and of course sublime composers, melding classical with rock to create their unique voice. RIP Michael & John, such a huge loss.
Beautiful …and I love the distinctive 70’s feel ….and look .. Sound , clothes , music , voice …..Takes me back to a better world
Vor genau 50 Jahren habe ich, damals 20 Jahre alt, diese großartige Gruppe das erste Mal gehört. Heute mit 70 klingt es noch genau so schön wie damals! 😎👍❤️
In summer 1977, I was home from university before my senior year, and worked f/t. I put a lamp timer on my el cheapo stereo and set it up to "turn on" at 5:45am. It would play side one of Ashes are Burning for 15 min. before my alarm clock went off at 6am. So I woke up to Can You Understand every morning that summer... good days 😍
Have to find my Ashes are burning vinyl right now ! Have to hurry , beautiful !
Holy %)^)!^#. Where has this been hiding? Love it.
Ouvindo 50 anos depois com o mesmo arrepio de minha juventude. Vocês são eternos, obrigado.❤👏👏👏
정말 멋있는 말씀 같습니다 아 ~
Eu tenho 45 e amo essa banda. Abraços..
Fantastic. Just phenomenal. Keyboards are so crisp and melodic. Bass, vocals. All of it!
This video demonstrates that was not only Annie Haslam a great singer, she ALSO loved the music, that progressive rock groove that Renaissance were pioneers of.
Annie had such a different set of moves on stage that are signature to her performance . I especially like how she often had her hands on her hips as she would dance around the stage when it was not time for her to sing. Love that move.
This band is beyond compare, no one else comes close to the m.
Only Currved Air or Illusion come close to Renaissance.
Annie HASLAM's voice is pure and so beautiful! The members' instrumental sounds and vocals are the best harmony for each other!
Reminds me of the audiophile era of the 70s, when the equipment industry was growing and expanding. Both automotive and home studio equipment. Pioneer, Kenwood, Yamaha, Marantz, Technics, Sound Labs, Carver, and a slew more. We used Renaissance and like groups to measure performance of the sales side in listening rooms.
Awesome times. And sound
I have never heard any of their material until now. After this performance, I've got a lot of catching up to do. Simply masterful!
The same essentially goes for me. This band skirted around the very edges of my music radar from the early 1990s to the late 2000s, but I didn't actually encounter any of its music until UA-cam algorithmed this onto me last week. I added this video and the original studio track ( ua-cam.com/video/wwrjZZ0gQgw/v-deo.html ) to my playlist of favorite individual music tracks.
Best place to start is thier Live At Carnegie Hall album
You do indeed have a lot of catching up to do. Enchanted with Annie and the band almost 50 years ago, saw them live in Seattle. Turn of the Cards is an album for all time.
@@jeffreymarshall6518 Songs of Scheherazade is also a great classic.
@@kwpres an amazing adaptation of a classic story
I have the Live at Carnegie Hall double album and Camera Camera on vinyl. I bring them out occasionally to hear music as it was in the 70s, beautiful and complex and musical. Not rap, not hip-hop.. I also saw Renaissance in a live concert from the Camera Camera tour. One of the best shows I've ever seen! Annie, you have the voice of an angel.
What a great band. Their music certainly has stood the test of time.
Saw them in the 70s at a little club in Parsippanny NJ called “A Joint in the Woods”
Annie is the female Jon Anderson! Pure class.
yes sure
Nah! She doesn't need Jon Anderson as a male superlative to be qualified against. Annie Haslam is Annie Haslam.
I was thinking it sounded like a female Jon Anderson as well! Similar but obviously more feminine. You have a good ear.
I was trying to think who she sounded like...then I read your comment. YES!😄
Shoudn’t that be, Jon Anderson is the male Annie Haslam 🙂
Words cannot describe the greatness of this band and their music. Miss Haslam's voice is the icing on this great 7 course meal of awesome tonal experience.
So glad I discovered this group and Annie's voice. Unfortunately 25 years too late.😔
Hey, at least you got to hear it.
Dollars down the penny drain
Frozen in the clouds
Dream away the last of pain
In waterfalls of sounds
Float across the icy pools
Leaves with curl and sway
Now your mind is floating cool
And you can find the way
Can you understand you can really understand
When the darkness comes you still shine
Open up your eyes and make the day shine sunshine now
Open up your dreams and and make the way shine sunshine now
Can you understand you understand
Can you understand you understand
Open up your life and make your lifetime sunshine now
Open up your soul and make your lifeline sunshine now
Can you understand you understand
Can you understand you understand
Dancing without moving now
Growing with your soul
One with all around you now
Related to the all
Purple mist around your hair
Eyes are fading blue
Smiling into everywhere
Love is coming through
Thank you!!
Thank you so much.

Takes me back to listening to this on the NightBird radio show on WNEW 102.7 FM in N.Y.C...
Alison Steele ‘The Nightbird’. WNEW 102.7 “Where Rock Lives” (Lived). Miss that station so much!
I used to listen to Alison Steele every night. I remember when the station first started out and had very few sponsors, and was taking donations. Weather channel was one of the first. She introduced me to Genesis, King Crimson… Renaissance… Mountain…Yes…I love that Dennis Elsas and a few others are still active on Sirius/XM. Been a prog fan ever since.
Holy shit! I feel reborn again! Most amazing band ever!
I saw Renaissance at Penn State in the mid 1980's. They were and still are master musicians and Annie is a tremendous vocalist! There are very few who even come close to her singing abilities.
Wish to live in 60s-70s where real music lives....
Genesis. ELP, YES, Renaissance.... What a time it was.
@@stefeniedavidmusicYeah, but there were wars in Vietnam & Northern Ireland that year, along with an oil crisis. Not an entirely great year, #1974..
By far ...such a great time to grow..👍👍🇸🇻
Saw the band in Tampa in 1976. One of the best experiences ever!
Wow! This takes me right back to the '70s. What a great voice Annie had and the band were just superb. The syncing is excellent. Thanks for the memories!!!
Watching this band perform live (or in the studio) is a real treat for me. The musicians in this band, especially the bass player, were top notch. And Annie's vocals, WOW, just wow!
Ooh....what we're missing now, this was wonderful and 'still is '47 years later, I'm so glad I was around for the best ever time for music.
I Renaissance sono tra le migliori testimonianze del progressive rock, pieni di maestria e sapienza musicale 🎶😄
Fantastici veramente!!
I was honored to see them live in Milwaukee back in 1977. My senior year of High School.. I was ahead of my time already back then.. lol
Extraordinário rock progressivo, psicodélico. Obra de arte da cultura musical do mundo. Esse é um gênero musical imortal para mim com meus 63 anos.

The sound is from their live album "Carnegie Hall". The studio version is without an orchestra! Nice to see the band perform with the beautiful Annie Haslam 😀
Cheers for that - I wondered why the visual and sound wasn't always in sync

I saw Renaissance at a small venue in Albany New York last week. I really wish they played this song, it’s wonderful. 😍
One thing you must admit about Renaissance is it has a very clean sound you can hear all of the instruments
Who is playing the orchestral part?
Holy Camoli that is a proper start to a seriously gorgeous song. That band did not need to stand aside for anyone. For me this is on par with my favs like Yes and Genesis, just not as well know. And that Era of musicians is aging into the sunset, feel fortunate to have these images/recordings.
Not to be forgotten never
Renaissance were a fantastic band. Annie Haslam still occasionally performs live 🎶🥳👸
I saw Renaissance in the 70's in Chicago. The opening act was Al Di Meola. What a night to remember!
I still think that the best concert of my life was in 1975 when Renaissance opened for Caravan at the Glasgow Apollo ( now log gone) just as "Turn of the Cards" was released... Annie was on sparkling form and the band got so many curtain calls and demands for more music that Caravan were delayed getting to the stage..
Just sheer magic - and Annie's voice has passed into legend now...
:)
I still have my original vinyl of turn of the cards, I think I bought it at or about 1976.
I saw the same tour in Manchester, we still talk about it and, though I love Caravan, Renaissance blew them off the stage that night.
Annie is certainly a legend, but very much a living legend. I only mention that because it is possible the phrase "passed into legend" night be interpreted by some to mean she has passed away. Thankfully, she is still very much with us as are Jon Camp and Terry Sullivan. There is a long interview with her from just a few weeks ago on Doug Helvering's "The Daily Doug" channel....also Jon Camp fans might be interested to learn of his recent work with guitarist Maurice Douglas. The duo is known collectively as "Mojo."
@@therealniksongs The Daily Doug is brilliant. Saw the interview too
The intro makes me think of a music box and also of some of the music in The Snowman.
I saw these guys around 1975, maybe 76, in Toronto. I have all their albums, including the old ones before Annie. What a great bunch of musicians. They may not be household names like the Beatles or the Stones, but my God were they talented. I still dig out the albums once in a while. Incredible stuff. Running Hard is still one of my favourites.
Anni Haslam ist eine Legende.wenn Ich ihre Stimme höre bin ich demütig .... bei allem, was ich nicht kann. Aber ich kann sehr gut zuhören.

Outstanding Music, Great Performance!! I miss all them!!!
I am very privileged so have seen Renaissance perform with the original line-up. I realize how priceless this is now, these many years later.
I saw the classic line up perform live twice in London. Absolutely brilliant. I once almost swore at Annie down the phone when she phoned me. I was so shocked that it was her, I almost used a couple of very bad words!!
The original line-up from the very first album??? ie. not this one! If so.....that's very cool. :)
The version of the band with Annie Haslam, Michael Dunford, Jon Camp, John Tout & Terry Sullivan. I never saw the version with Keith & Jane Relf etc. Although I do have both thier original albums on CD.
My sister had their album The Day of The Dreamer. I stole it from her and listened to it 1000 times. It’s still a favorite memory.
It's very sad to know that 2 of the band members are no longer with us. RIP Michael and John.
We also lost their lyricist Betty Thatcher.
Quelle qualité dans la recherche musicale et vocale… changements de rythme, parfois de clé. Et combien de groupes de ces époques là complètement méconnus.
LOVE This Song! So talented, so beautiful.
Saw them play this live in '88 at the Golden Bear in Huntington Beach, CA. What a show.
I love this jewel, I listened to this group in the seventies.
This song entitled by "Renaissance," "Can You Understand?" is a musical "gem," and was originally a studio recording song taken from the 1973 released album entitled "Ashes Are Burning" on Capitol/Sovereign Records. On the studio recording, Richard Hewson arranged the string arrangements of the song. This song for me, is also very nostalgic, as it brings back yearning memories of the '70's "art rock" genre of music. John Tout was originally trained as a classical pianist and was a highly skilled keyboard player. R.I.P. John and Michael.
Faiport Convention with Sandy Denny opened the show in NYC in 1974 with Renaissance headlining, accompanied by a 21 piece orchestra. Pure magic. I’d give a body part to go back and see that show again.
Which body part would you give for a UHD Blu-Ray of that concert?

All the components are magistral strumentalist, but the diamond is the stunning voice of Annie Haslam.

My sister was heavily into them..then I caught the bug! I saw them twice in 1979 in Israel Tel Aviv and Jerusalem where I met them backstage . Very wonderful speaking to both Annie & John.
One of the top 5 bands of all time. Annie is just magical. They are truely timeless.
Such musicianship in he quintessential support of Annie's wonderful ,soaring unblemished vocal. Never to see such bands again? How tragic would that be? You never know what you've lost until it's gone.
This is unique stuff. It's like symphonic folk rock or something.
