Ferry is one of the best lyricists of the 20th century - Bowie thought he was great. His education ended with a fine art degree from Newcastle Universty but, amazingly, his true talent was in literature and songwriting.
The song starts out with a party feel all the noise and chaos, then it's the next day onto contemplation of his life and his loves, the reference to 'the Plastic You' and other references to plastic is because fake 'Mother of Pearl' (made from seashells) is often made from plastic. Other tracks to check out by them are, 'Out of The Blue', 'In Every Dream Home A Heartache', 'Do The Strand', 'Edition of You', etc.
I knew this song, but never listened closely to the lyrics. My goodness they are quite brilliant. Bowie himself said Ferry was the greatest lyricist of his age and I'm only understanding what he meant.
Thank you for doing this. Although this one of their greatest songs, it's not their signature song. "Do The Strand" is their undisputed signature. You missed an opportunity by not having headphones on during your first listen.
I love Roxy music I used to get picked on in high school for liking them I saw him when I was 15 at the Hollywood palladium when Brian Eno was still in the band
Jon Gustafson - The bass lines are always superb. John Wetton was on tour with them in 74/75 check out his funky bass on Out of the Blue on Midnight Special. Critical to their music was the addition on Eddie Jobson on keyboards and violin
In 1978 I was 14 years old. I swapped a Ramones album for For Your Pleasure. My British Punk days were over. This is 1973. Think what going on in those days. Exactly. Roxy Music influenced every 80s 90s band they were so out there and in front of their time. Should be spoken in the same breath as Bowie Lennon McCartney even zeppelin.
This is not the song that Roxy Music is best known for...but it should be. It's my all-time favorite song by them. I love the way Bryan sometimes staggers his word delivery. It absolutely should be the 1st song anyone thinks of when they hear the name Roxy Music.
I'm (Chris) the same way with Prince. Purple Rain is FAR from his best work (still a great song). Most of my favourites are on albums most people that I knew wouldn't even bother listening to.
This song always makes me tear up a little. It’s one of their greatest accomplishments. If y’all haven’t see it, go check out the live version from the London Apollo (I think it’s from 2000?). You can find the best upload on Bryan Ferry’s official YT channel, which suggests that he likes it, too. The whole original lineup is there (including Paul T) and the augmented band includes session players who worked on several Roxy/Ferry solo projects-it’s really something. While you’re there, go watch the live version of “Out of the Blue” with Lucy Wilkin’s *insane* rendition of the ending violin solo-she brings the house down
OH JENNIFER QUICK was my Mother of Pearl, my art class glam girl extraordinaire who said Tommy are you taking me to Roxy ... their album covers were banned so of course that made noise, but their shows were rocking from the minute the drapes opened (yes Haniers drapes) Eno was gone after that tour they`ve other songs that have been suggested & really rock, so I thank my "Mother of Pearl "for her inspiring invitation & help with painting because I ended up being a butcher...Keep on Rockin & giddyup Hanier`s
best early roxy song after these i "if there is something" it has the same transitions of timing and tone and once again it was part of a movie soundtrack
Bryan Ferry went to Art College and when he graduated he became an Art teacher. Not sure if someone suggested he should become a musician, but he was a self taught musician and in 1971 that's when he formed Roxy Music. All the models on the Roxy Music album covers from 1972 - 1975 Bryan Ferry dated them. The fifth one, 'Siren' on the album cover as the mermaid is American model Jerry Hall and Bryan Ferry dated her until she dumped him for Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger. Roxy Music was a Glam Rock band, which guitarist Marc Bolan of T. Rex is one of the first musicians of early Glam Rock, and David Bowie was the King of Glam Rock.
It’s a great song! Don’t think Roxy really broke the American market until their later softer and more soulful albums. Both ends burning is my favourite Roxy tune 👍😁
When you listen to RM you have picture Bryan Ferry as a silk suit wearing, slicked-hair debonair and love-forlorn jet-setter with an armful of super models in tow... with a wink.
early life is very chaotic, then things become clear, we dont all find the same clarity, but the sentiment of the song is obvious to everyone, roxy was well known for these kinds of words, phrases, anyone can like them, there is no hate here, just good music, and a phylosophy of love for mankind.
@@hanierfamily They weren't mates though, in fact, Bryan thought Dali was an attention seeker past his prime and hung around rock stars strictly for the press.
cynthian you will come along to Bryan Voice all about style . Bob Dylan sang one way and thats all he could do and can go back and forth about lyrics but Ferry always had the creative style of vocals
Check out bands "THEM" songs "Baby Please Don 't Go" "Here Comes the Night" "Gloria" "SPENCER DAVIS GHROUP" songs "Keep on RUNNING" "Gimme somee LOVIN" or singers JOE COCKER" Song "With a Little Help from my Friends" "CHRIS FARLOWE" cheers
Let's be real folks. Anybody who is a true Roxy Music fan knows *"Love is the Drug"* is this band's *signature song.* Is *"Love is the Drug"* their best song?? A heavens no. I prefer *"Tokyo Joe"* or *"Love Her Madly"* from Bryan Ferry's solo album *"In Your Mind"* over *"Love is the Drug".* Heck. I like *Grace Jones* cover of *"Love is the Drug"* more han the original.
Been a fan since 73 when they were on TOTP with Street Life. Not a fan of Love is the Drug at all - or much of their later commercial stuff really. Most Roxy fans who got into them in the early 70s would say that the first 3 albums are the classics and that Virginia Plain is more of a signature hit than Love is the Drug, I suspect.
Not so very Bowie to me. While I loved the music David made, always changing he was not up to this standard/level when it came to lyrics. In fact I don't know anyone who who ever got to that level in this genre. Also I think Roxy Music was even more edgy and clearly so than Bowie. Next level but with Eno gone it quickly went down the drain Roxy of 1976 onwards to my mind was kind of blah.
Great vid, yes you can detect, sometimes, a hint of other artists in his vocals such as Bowie, and outright imitators of Ferry, but Ive loved Roxy since the begining - nobody Sounds like Ferry : )
We've always been of the same opinion. But sometimes a live performance is spectacular. Reactors went crazy for Phil Collins' live performance of 'In The Air Tonight'. Though I'm not sure I agree with them. We love Phil. Don't get me wrong. But was that his best? But then you look at Edgar Winters' 'Frankenstein' from The Old Grey Whistle Test and it blows your mind.
Mother of Pearl is not really a signature song although a great one .You did pick one from their innovative period . I recommend Virginia Plain from their debut LP, then do If There IS Something from that same breakthrough LP
@@hanierfamily Sorry . didn’t know . If you haven’t reacted yet try Roxy Music’s If There Is Something from the first Album . I consider it their Stairway to Heaven .
Ehhh, this certainly is not their signature song. "Do the strand" actually is, as for 50 years it's the one the end their shows with (still do). They even don't perform "Mother of Pearl" very often.
Do The Strand is slick, but souless. Ferry said his voice could not cope with the length of the song. So it is rarely played live. A pity. Mother of Pearl is the best Roxy song.
One of my favourite songs of all time…
No kidding!!
Came home from school, aged 14, in 1972 - Roxy Music on TOTP...been a fan ever since. This and In Every Home a Heartache...
Yeah I know, I was 14 in 72, but I first saw them on the Old Grey Whistle Test.
I was 17. Bought the first album, saw them on the first (second?) tour in 1972. Been a fan ever since.
''If there is Something'' is a Roxy song with so many nuances. Their signature is skipping tempo mid through. Sometimes getting 3 songs in one!

Brilliant! Are you going to see Roxy on the current tour Margie?
This song just keeps building and building..they are one of the greatest bands of all time!
One of my all time favourite songs, not just from Roxy. The bass in this is superb.
Jon Gustafson - The bass lines are always superb. John Wetton was on tour with them in 74/75 check out his funky bass on Out of the Blue on Midnight Special. Critical to their music was the addition on Eddie Jobson on keyboards and violin
I’ve only now just paid attention to the bass despite knowing this song since it was first released! 😊

It's possibly my favourite RM song but I've played it to other people who just don't get it at all.
I also love Both Ends Burning - another underrated song from Ferry and Roxy.
The Great Paul Thompson - DRUMS - Andrew Mackay - SAXS & OBOE - Phil Manzanera - GUITAR - Edwin 'Eddie' Jobson - KEYBOARDS & VOILIN

Great reaction vid again. I'd say Love is the drug or Virginia Plain are the most famous songs of theirs in the UK at least.
Thee incomperable Bryan Ferry!
He's great. This is wonderful music.
Virginia Plain is their signature song. A Song For Europe is in the top ten also.
Viva Roxy Music
Roxy: Goatish

Jerry Hall left Bryan Ferry for Mick Jagger 😂
Mr. Ferry's ode to cocaine

I always thought She Sells was a precursor to Tokyo Joe.
Tokyo Joe is too polished
Virginia Plain is ahead of all that you referenced.
My two favoutite songs in that album are still "Song For Europe" and "Just Like You"
