There are videos from back then where he explains his set-up. I personally, as well as Vinnie, think his current Sawtooth set-up is much better, as it sounds better and is more of a rock kit. The set-up he used when recording Mob Rules was not that great, and even if you had his Mob Rules set-up, you would never come close to sounding like him. His sound back then was mostly the sound engineer and how the kit was miked. Back in the day, drums were dead tuned, meaning accusticly they sounded like a very unturned thumpy drum set. It was all up to how the sound engineer miked the kit and as to how the drums were EQed. Until about the late 90s, the drum sounds on the albums had the skill of the drummer, but the sound was all up to the sound engineer, and how the engineered sound was mixed with the other instruments and singer.

why not use the mics on the drums, rather than the camera mic? The mix is not great.... for a decades long pro.
