What did I learn from this video? : “Flaps Negative ; Think Positive” and Patience always pays off.
What did Stefan learn? : On the Janus the wheel brake is on the stick! 😄
Thank you for the wonderful views and the opportunity to look at another part of the planet. I dream of flying in these places.
Thank you Igor! USA definitely should be on your bucket list.
6.5 Hour flight over 300 miles free distance while learning the local pilot recommendations during a tandem.... I wouldn't call that a failure by any means.
It wasn't, just for the UA-cam stuff ;)
@@SteFly "youtube stuff" haha You mean CLICK BAIT!!! haha J/k it's understood. God bless, Great video.
Awesome! Zach used to be the president of the flying club I was part of at the beginning of college! Awesome seeing him again here on your channel
We were flying that day too out of Minden, I could hear you guys on the radio and heard how long it took to get out and going. I think we were already down past Mammoth when you left Tahoe. Was a great day on the Sierras. There are also a lot of days where the Sierras don't work at all on a day with 10 knot plus climbs in the desert.
what an incredible and unbelievable landscape. thank you for these amazing pictures!
Thanks for the nice comment! :)
Man, that requires a lot of patience! Thanks for posting!
Good steep approach on 20-avoid the big sinker off the end.
Always enjoy your videos and this one was special because you were flying in my backyard. You turned around very close to where I live! Sure wish we still had a towplane here...
Wow, thank you! Later this trip, we planned to fly from Lone Pine for one day but unfortunately the weather didn't play with us. Instead we were heading to Utah.
I have never been to the USA and will never fly there, because I have no glider pilot license. But I had the feeling I was in the USA, in a glider flying thermals. Thanks!
Awesome, thank you!
6:47 'it's not terrible it's five knots' ... as a New England USA glider pilot, this made me laugh.
That is wild!
Great content, Stefan! I live in Phoenix, Arizona and I am an airline pilot. I fly over Tahoe and the sierras often. Beautiful countryside.
Thank you! Must also be amazing on the ground :D
Even though you didnt make it to Mt Whitney, you gained invaluable experience from flying in an new area (the Sierra Nevada mountain range) and that in itself its a success. Look forward to the next video to the mountain. Take care Stefan! Thank you
The struggle is so real. Great footage! You really capture the essence of the amazing soaring we have here. I wish we had more video of the whole grid watching you guys for the first hour. It was one of the more fun parts of that flight :)
This would have bin fun to see :)
excellent content as always !
Amazing to see your video about KTRK and Sierras. I saw you on launch line in Truckee but i think it was different day since you used one seater. Wunderbar videos Stefan!
The next day I flew the ASG29 of Mitch from Truckee ;) Vielen Dank!
That looked like so much fun!
It is :)
Beautiful !!
Fantastic video! I would love to fly out there in the Sierras again.
I've never really given much thought to twin seater before, besides for training purposes. But what fun to share the experience with a friend!
It is!
Lovely landscape, I fly gliders in the Netherlands and hope I will experience this ever as well!! :D
Epic video!! I’ve hiked to the top of Mt Whitney. Such beautiful and hostile terrain. Would’ve loved to see you soaring overhead while on the summit. Looking forward to watching your next exciting attempt!
Thank you!!
Great. Know that region very well!
Wow just wow amazong
なに?! ≒ What's up?! What?!
I like your amazing video!
Towed up by the pickle! Next time in California come out to Williams Soaring Center.
I hate flying on a gut level but that looked like fun.
Thanks
Nice video Stefan. You got to fly with one of the best young pilots in CA.!!! Zach was your perfect mentor for Sierra Soaring. I had an amazing flight over Mt. Whitney out of Inyokern with an expert pilot (Jim Staniforth/Tehachapi Pilot). We did some rock scraping just south of Whitney, but did eventually catch the super lift coming out of the Owen's Valley up canyon and flew over Whitney. It was a memorable flight for me as a (then) only soloed pilot (2017). btw: see our YT channel with the story of Wave Soaring by Keith Schwab; Antelope Valley Soaring Club; Porch Chats).
I'm sure u r already aware.. but there very special cloud formations over the Sierras, fascinating and truly beautiful mountains / deserts
Awesome landscape! Cool flying! Shame it wasn't the right day for Mt Whitney 😑
It's always about the adventure and I have seen a lot of this awesome landscape in this flight :)
why so not so many likes? great video
Wenn ich nur einmal mitfliegen könnte, das wäre ein Traum, mit dem besten Piloten!
this is where a glider with an assist engine would be helpful allowing you to gain some altitude early and get to better raising air.
This glider would have a sustainer engine but it was not serviced. I think at these high altitudes you would need something more powerful...
I've been watching all kinds of things related to Gliding as I've just discovered it a few weeks ago and got really interested in it, one question that I really want to ask here though is, do most people purchase a Glider or rent one ? And if purchasing one, how much does a decent one cost on average ? I'm talking about gliders which you need a tow to get into the air, not any self-launch ones. I live in the middle of Europe and prices of everything in the world have shot up in the last 2 years, so I'm looking for something that's recent for the pricing. Thanks a lot and really enjoy the videos and the views you get from inside the glider.
Thank you so much! In Europe usually you start the gliding in a club, where you rent the glider for a small fee. In our club it's about 12 - 18€ per hour, which should be a good average from Germany. Some clubs have even flatrates and can be cheaper. When you have your licence and really want to get into XC and competition flying then it might be a good idea to buy your own glider after some time. Used club class gliders which performs ok will start at 10.000 - 15.000 €, a new high performance 18m wingspan glider with propulsion will cost about 300.000 € these days.
@@SteFly - Thank you very much for the answer. I'm not looking for anything serious or any competition. My goal is just to fly to beautiful places and take videos of the areas like you are doing so I guess just renting from clubs are good enough.
Come to Colorado . 53+ 14ers to bag.
G,day Stefan from Sydney Australia.
It's been a while since seeing your gliding videos. When are the world gliding championships starting, and which country? Is Julie Serra with you on this trip? (Apologies if incorrect spelling).
🌏🇭🇲
I think she's currently in South Africa.
I´m flying two worlds next year: end of August the SGP Final in Italy and at the beginning of December the WGC in club class in Australia.
Sorry, wrong channel to ask about J.S.
Good news; The next WGC will be close to you at Narromine NSW in December 2023.
I took one glider flight in the 1970's & loved it, but how did these pilots not need oxygen at that altitude?
We had oxygen with us, you can see the oxygen goggles on the nose.
Love these videos. Really makes me want to get an add on rating. Avenal Glider Port is only 1.5 hours away from where we live.
Thank you! Zach is flying at Avenal.
But It s Impossible to fly at this Speed.. which is your Speed???
Is America a good place for gliding? Or is it this area that is hard to use a glider in?
It's an awesome place for gliding, but you need to have experience and the weather conditions need to be good.
@@SteFly okay thanks 👍
I don’t understand how the glider works how it can fly so long with no engine
Whats the significance of clouds?
Thermals
Guys I'm confused about how exactly a glider works
Would be awesome to have an engine prop and gas tank in that glider and fly all over the earth.
richtiger Stuka Anflug^^
Denali my man. My Whitney is not the highest mountain in the united states. Denali beats it by 6800 ft. I assume you meant to say lower u.s
Way over controlling the stick!!! Making butter yes, flying sailplanes NO! Rest your wrist on your thigh, fly with 2-3 fingers...smooth!
