- The most epic glider flight of my flying adventure in France. You feel like a tiny bird in-between the huge mountains.
A huge thank you to Christoph and everyone from Grenoble Aerodrome for the amazing help!

From the deserts of Namibia to the French Alps, how much fun can one guy have?! 😃
You’re living the dream, Stefan! 👍
There was a big winter break in between 😅
I like to put my food in a bag so I can squish it if I don't have enough space... But I definitely know the problem, a sleepingbag, a airmattress, and the trunk is full... 😂
That plane is an absolutely gorgeous feat of engineering -- both in form and function. This shot of the glider climbing at 7:20 was awesome.
I have hundreds of skydives and a few hours flying aircrafts. When I discovered gliding (not long ago) I thought it wouldn't give me much enjoyment, but I signed for the course cause I NEED to fly, and it was quite cheap, so I thought I would give it a try. Oh man, how wrong I was... I instantly fell in love with it.
Amazing, beautiful, beautiful flight! Thanks.
Stefan.... you are the best.... Eye in the sky can only be seen with a great Tudor like yourself. You have a great vision for the best road in the sky. Now I'm beginning to see a better view...Just a little...great video.
Thank you so much!!
Love these long videos. What a place to fly, mate.
Thank you mate! 👍
Grenoble, kann man mal so machen! Merci fürs mitnehmen....
Thank you for map and GPS data. Wonderful flight. 8:40 Mont Aiguille!
This is the best 2 videos ever plus Part 2...... love the information mixed in with the footage and the flight graphics... brilliant.... you make it look so easy !!!!!
Super schöne Bilder. Vielen Dank fürs Mitnehmen und Zeigen. Hat richtig Freude gemacht!
Super, das freut mich!
Very nice flight again Stefan. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful video ! It was a pleasure to meet you at Grenoble, I hope you will come back!
Thanks mate, it was my pleasure to meet you. See you soon!
Epic video with a very nice mood! Can't wait to start flying cross country again! 🤪
Thanks mate! 😃Now we have snow and bad weather in Germany...
Awesome video. Thanks for sharing and taking us along.
Wonderful video. Thank you!
Exceptional flight - many thanks for sharing the experience 🙏
Just superb, I can't wait till I start learning this summer. Inspirational.
Truly awe-inspiring.
Nossa é muita coragem e perícia !!! Gostei demais !! Parabéns , lindo voo e lindas imagens!!
Great flight and fantastic video, thank you Stefan! Be safe and enjoy the rest of your time 'en France'
Thank you! I´m already back home in cold Germany ;)
amazing thanks !!
Hi Stef, this place is not Namibia but not so far !!🤗🤭👍👍👍
Did I copied something about Namibia in the description? 😂
It´s an amazing place to fly!
Man what a flight! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for commenting! :)
Best of luck.world best fly more.❤
Magnifique,
merci beaucoup l'Ami !
Stef, that is maybe the greatest video for general public to explain how gliding works IRL
Wow, thank you so much!
Wow! Thanks!
Anothet great flight!
Very happy to see gliding. Good luck stefan. Love from Pakistan.
Top class! You deserve Oscar for your films 🙂. Waiting for next ones!
Thank you 😄
Let's goooo! GVV and the guys! Chamrousse
Awesome!!!
Wow, ich muss auch wieder nach Südfrankreich.Sehr geil
Hello from Dream2fly! The weather is awesome, the film is incredibile!
brudi liebe deine videos mach weiter so
Amazing scenery and places to fly.. can't wait to the rest of this flying adventure in ur next vids!!
Envidia y saludos.
Good video
I almost thought i heard the super Mario Bros 2 soundtrack in the cockpit. I also noticed you said "parachute". I wouldn't want to think about how hard it would be to get out of that thing... Like a fat man trying to get out of a half drained waterbed going at 200mph.
Really nice vid. I love the freedom of sometimes not having to go back to where you came from. Did I hear the next destination might be somewhere in the Massif Central? I did a flight many years ago from Sisteron to somewhere in there and it was “interesting”. The ground came up and the cloud came down...
Yes, it was really great to know that we can land at any airfield where we will get back in the air the next day. It instantly feels like a holiday on a vacation 😂
What a great adventure. Eastern Canada doesn’t have the beautiful mountains. I must come out your way sometime and experience this!
Great video.
Southern France and the Alps are an exceptional place to fly 👍
That's an unusual route to Mont Blanc but totally epic. I have to try it in August
At the beginning it was not our plan to fly to Mont Blanc. At the same day others flew the other route to the Mont Blanc and the Vercors back. ;)
It was fascinating material😍 Great graphic showing Your paths above mountain. I'm impressed. In nearly few months i will start to do a glider cours and now I get to take on the topic termals. Would you recomend some books or Your materials to make a Good grounds to bring the subject matters closer?
Fantastic video. I would like to suggest to report certain parameters, like elevation, why did you use and at what elevation oxygen, ground speed ASI, distance from start…. Rey interesting to watch
There is so much more I could do but at this point I don´t have the time for the editing. Sorry.
beautiful! did you grab a pen from Mont Blanc?
My arm was to short 😂
nice :))),,, you should look into using the inogen o2 generator instead of the bottle
There was an airport that supports gliders closer to the Mont Blanc, its called Challes les Eaux next to Chambéry
How difficult would chute deployment be in a real situation? Would g-forces make the canopy hard to open?
being rich must be amazing
Did your sandwich box scratch your window? It used to be 15 lashings from my instructor for putting anything on the dash.
nearly always better to stay on Chartreuse and Vercors and NOT choose Belledonne. Have made this mistake at least 10 times...
So true, except maybe late in the afternoon if you are high enough...
We wanted to see something different. ;) But I´m sure Chartreuse and Vercors would have been the better option also at this day. Good to know for next time. Thanks for you comment and congrats to your amazing flights already in this season!!
Bin jetzt schon sehr zufrieden!
@@SteFly Klingt hoch interessant.
Great music - funny accent though. Where did you pick it up?
Strange audio! It sounds like it is different when climb is below your McCready and more normal when above, correct? Or is it telling you that climb is increasing or decreasing? Looks like you need a bit more damping. What is it?
The audio is still from XCSoar because I´m using an experimental variometer...
My reaction is “ too much information”. But then I got my badges with maps, camera and a smoked barograph! Just upgraded to a 9070 and a Shark MS, wonder if anyone ever looks outside!
is the altimeter in meter?
What mount do you use for your gopro? I can't find anything that can stick onto the canopy
It´s a 3D printed suction cup mount: www.stefly.aero/product/kamerahalterung-fuer-segelflugzeughaube/
Hi @Stefan Langer. Amazing flight. How hard a flight like this is ?
I want to learn how to fly next year and I wonder how much experience do you need to do such a flight. How difficult is it ?
How do you find thermals in the mountains ? Do you prepare it before ?
Tanks in advance for you answer buddy. It has been 1 year that I have been following you and I LOVE your content.
It will take years of practise and you definately need thorough preparation! Even a lot of experience in the area. Probably the best idea is to join someone with more experience in a two seater glider first. Talk with local experts!
A 450 km cross country flight in the flatlands is not a big deal. It will take you two years until you have your license (in a club) and then 1 - 2 years cross country training. For flying in the mountains you should have more experience and as Eirik already mentioned, it would be the best to experience it in a double seater first.
Thank you so much for your answer guys! I was wondering if you find thermals or winds that lift you up on every hill/mountain edge (like in the vid) or only some? And of only some of them, how do you recognize these?
@@Le-J- There are certain mountains with better conditions, e.g. the orientation to the sun or wind is better, less snow, ... So you can´t say for sure you will find a thermal at a specific mountain but at some mountains the chances are higher. You always need to have a plan B or C and at the end you will also need to have a landing option. In the flatlands you can only read the thermals from the cumulus clouds or from the ground at blue days. My mountain flying skills are also not the best so far ;)
@@SteFly Once again, thank you so much for your answer. And how do you know the wind direction when you are in the glider ? Is there a map showing you ? Or do you need to carefully watch trees and grass moving ?
How long was the flight in total?
You can roughly calculate it. Gliders fly roughly 120 km per hour. So let’s say you have a 1200 km flight. That’s 10 hours
Just have a look at the flight track linked in the description. Flight duration was nearly 6 hours.
@@apersonthatshere3029 That´s not so easy to calculate. We glider pilots measure the XC distance with up to 6 legs and thermaling and detours are not included in the distance. In this case my average speed was 78 kph, what´s ok for an older glider. 120 kph is already very good for a long distance flight in Europe with thermals. My German record with a 18 m glider is 114 kph for a declared triangle with more than 1000 km.
@@SteFly sorry then. I’m not flying myself. I will start flying in about 5 months. I’m currently not living in Germany. Soon I’ll be back to the Heimat. Segelflug Stuede Bernstein See ivh komme
whats that beeping from the glider
Dumb question but, what is the beeping that occurs once in a while? And what is its pitch and frequency indicating?
Higher pitch ascent, lower descent. It corresponds to the upper right dial on the dashboard.
How much the real time of the flight ?
21:15 hast dem treckerfahrer ja mal schön 'nen schrecken eingejagt 🤣
That particular Farmer must be used to Gliders coming in this "low", for their landings, as his field abuts/borders the local Airfield ✌🏻🇳🇱
I was aware of him 😅
Parachute ?
24m vor dem Flugzeug keinen Alkohol :-)
What happens re’ oxygen requirements if you have to eject at that altitude?
Also, do you ever feel claustrophobic in the cockpit?
How did you got out of fear not reaching back to airfield?
There are always landing options within reach. At the beginning of the cross country training it´s a big milestone, if you know you can just make an outlanding. It´s nothing exceptional and with some practise it´s even fun to do.
Why does your plane fly without an engine for a long time and does not fall?
Because I use thermals and ridge lifts to stay in the air + the glider glides very efficient. With 1km height, the glider can fly 41 km at calm air 🤙🏼
@@SteFly Cool, danke :)
Did you have a back-up crew?
Yes, our friends from Vinon would have helped us to get back home.
looks like a good sandwich
You need to make a full video like the intro sequence
It´s not really possible with a single seater glider to film all the time with a hand held camera. In a double seater it would be possible..
@@SteFly yeah that makes sense, awesome video anyways
So this is the place MSFS 2020 keeps trying to make me fly to...
Mindert mein Prfüdungsstress etwas, danke
0:14 Stefan, your flying skills are great and I really like your videos. But flying that low over Chamrousse is not showing great airmanship ! There are many many options to fly safely here and careless flying like so endangers our ability to maintain such airspace open for us who fly there locally. Mountain flying is already under a lot of scrutiny/pressure and there is a real threat from French authorities to close airspaces (such as the Mont Blanc area) just because (1) they can and (2) they are mostly listening to non-flying people that are pissed that we fly there, sometimes with reason such as this one. Please use your audience reach to promote gliding as a safe and responsible sport ! Available by PM to discuss further if need be. Great flight otherwise !
I respect your comment, however if I would do everything wright for everyone, I must not publish any video. In this case it was late in the day so there was no lift operation anymore.
@@SteFly I understand and as mentioned earlier I really appreciate your efforts to promote gliding in such cool ways. Nevertheless, I deal with the DGAC/DSAC almost on a daily basis in the AURA region (Northern Alps basically) and I cannot stress enough how close we are to have flight restrictions so severe that gliding/flying in some mountaineous areas will be impossible in a very near future. The Mont-Blanc area have been closed by ZRT last summer, national parks have punitive altitude restrictions, there are more and more areas for us to avoid and the list goes on, especially in the Nothern Alps.
I am sure that you had a briefing upon arrival that emphasised the need for pilots to respect the rules and there is a good reason for that. I only ask for you to be aware of this situation and avoid jeopardising all the efforts that we, local pilots, put to maintain the airspace open for everybody, including you. Again, feel free to reach out by PM to discuss further, I will be happy to provide some more details (why not do a video to explain to your audience and talk about solutions to help reduce the risk?)
Otherwise, again I like your videos and kudos for the efforts to film, edit and upload all your gliding adventures!
Why Mont Blanc, It's an Italian mountain. You should call it Monte Bianco
who the fuck dislikes a video like this
YT itself, sometimes. Ratios the vid. Less monetization.
@@The_Modeling_Underdog Dislikes have no impact on monetization and you can´t see dislikes anymore on UA-cam.
@@SteFly There's an extension to Google Chrome that allows you to see hem, iirc. Nice to know about them not hitting on the money. We know you work hard on keeping this channel updated. Cheers!

Beautifull flight in my prefered glider the LS3.
At 8:26 "la corniche du Vercors" " the cornice of Vercors" a long ridge going to Grenoble .
Don't you get afraid about not having a spot to land sometimes? I ask this as I fly paraglider and this is one of my fears.. (And I realize you might laugh as its way easier to land a paraglider :)
There must always be a spot to reach where you land the glider. Especially in the mountains it is very important. In general outlandings are more or less normal for me and with my experience I know that it may happen a few times a year. At the end every outlanding is some kind of adventure and you learn from it. To overcome this fear is a fundamental part for cross-country flying ;)
Mais abuser !!!! consommation carburant: 0 et 100% d'éclate ! ça donne envie d'essayer le planeur :)
