We flew in and out of Truckee airport all the time in the 70'-80's since my dad had a single-engine Piper. I used to marvel at the sailplanes back then. Now, I'm addicted to the idea, and I would love to train and spend my retirement doing exactly this. Thank you, Stefan, for all the inspiration! And btw, I spent my youth in Heidelberg, and German is my first language. You have a new fan!
I can’t wait to see a few more. I visited Lake Tahoe once and never thought of it as a gliding Mecca.
Nice to see a bouncer for once. That’s called “real life”.
'High energy' American landing............
The landing was fine :)
haha can't post that on youtube lol - didn't seem too bad anyway :) Nice one Mitch for looking after Stefan!
I lived in Mammoth Lakes (I an Aussie)... you drove right past it... wonderful area for many activities... and Reno is booming right now
Welcome to the United States Stephan. I’m glad your licensing was squared away and you’ll be able to fly. Have fun and fly safe.
I had a great time in the US in September! Thank you :)
@@SteFly Ah, yes. Missed the dates you were here.
Great video, Stefan. And, welcome to the US and California! I'm looking forward to flying at Truckee next summer - thanks for the great intro video! I'm anxiously awaiting your next "Soaring US!" videos. Cheers!
Thank you so much! I can highly recommend to fly from Truckee. Take your time for preparation and ask the locals for some tips. In my opinion one of the most demanding areas to fly cross country, besides New Zealand 😅
@@SteFly I belong to a club who keep gliders at Truckee during the summer. I'm a new glider pilot, and believe me, I hang on every word from the experienced pilots in the club, and from pilots such as yourself. I plan to attend a soaring camp near Reno (Sky Sailing) in June, and then tiptoe into Truckee as my experience builds.
Very excited to discover the rest !!! :)
Ah, the Owens Valley. Had some great flying there in 2002 at the US Paragliding Nationals until the 3rd day when I fell out of the sky and had to throw my reserve.
Excellent video! In the southwest USA it is fairly common to get up near 18k during the better months of the summer. Makes for some excellent cross country soaring.
Thank you so much! Yes, it's definitely one of the best countries to fly glider. Awesome conditions. Need to come back during the season at some point..
Super Video! Ich freue mich schon, mehr von Primm zu sehen in den nächsten Videos. Sah für mich immer nach einer schönen Gegend zum Fliegen aus.
Dankeschön!
hey, i love your videos great job
You should come through Santa Barbara before departing Los Angeles and learn to fly paragliders
Welcome Stefan to California and Truckee airport. My husband was one of the tow pilots for Soar Truckee long ago. I flew there in the early 1970's, lift is strong and cross-country flights are made often. We now live due north from Truckee in the Sierra Valley across the highway from an airport. Happy to see you enjoying your flight. Truckee has a long history of glider flying. Great to see you flying in our country.
It's an amazing area. Thank you!!
Bravo!
Try to get on the White Mountains, amazing spring there!
Nice! Looking forward to seeing some video of the actual soaring days too :)
The first big flight with Zack should be online in a few days ;)
Please fly over Japan someday, too.🗾🗾🎌🎌
I would love to. Do they have an active gliding community?
Yes, they have several glider clubs and associations. The Kirigamine Glider Port would be the place to go.
@@SteFly don't fly over japan drive in Japan😉
Hey Stefan, Welcome to the USA!! So that looks nice, never been to Truckee airport, but it looks good. You'll have to come back and visit Minden-Tahoe airport in the Springtime and ride the mountain waves. In this area it's possible to above 7,650 meters when the conditions are right. That would make for some awesome videos! Looking forward to the next few episodes in California!
Thank you!! Zach told me about these unbelievable conditions and I have seen some flight tracks on WeGlide.
@@SteFly 😀
Congratulations on navigating the federal bureaucracy. Glad you are enjoying your trip so far and thanks for all the kind words about your experiences here. Hope you continue to enjoy it.
I was always a little uncomfortable with giving control of the ship to someone else. Do you feel any of that or has your vast experience overcome all that?
It's not better in Germany 🤣
I also don't feel comfortable with giving the control of the glider to someone else.
try the minden-tahoe airport / soaring NV, it's great too. next to truckee
Will try next time. Great idea!
Hi Stefan, nice video! Have you tried self-launching gliders? What is your opinion on their perfomance. I've seen models by a manufacturer from Poland - GP gliders. They offer such options, and I got interested. Thanks for opinion
What a great adventure, please show more flights, Stefan.
You must be an expert at converting feet to meters and knots to km/h , because every time you go from Germany to another country you also go from Metric to Imperial?
Thank you so much! No, absolutely not. That's why I thought it would help the others aswell ;)
If you want to try bumpy landing conditions and beautiful landscapes at high elevation in Europe, you should visit us in La Llagonne (LFNQ) France ! We don't have Tom cruise nor Mustangs, but nice local beers and cheese !
LMFAO
Der Amerikaner nannte die Landung einen Türsteher
how much is that plane ?
Don`t know exactly. My guess for the Janus CT is 60 - 70k USD
Geiles Gelände
Very different style of flying, eh? Have you ever operated a glider before from a towered airport? I cannot think of anywhere in Europe where that would be allowed.
Now that you have your Private validation, this opens up many possibilities for you. Are you at all interested in powered flight? If so, this has to be one of the cheapest places to get an airplane rating. With your Private, you can add Sport-ASEL in a weekend in something like a J3 Cub with no minimum flight experience requirements. All it takes is two different flight instructors. Or you could jump straight to a Commercial certificate from what you have now. We also have a number of airplanes, which are licensed as gliders, such as the Pipistrel, which you are already legal to fly. Also, if you're going to be coming back, I recommend that you get a B1/B2 visa instead of relying on the VWP. The VWP can create lots of problems for you if you are flying GA.
I am trying to convert faa to easa, what are the requirements to add glider endorsement to easa airplane ppl in Germany?
Hi I'm karthi from India in Tamilnadu. Pls welcome to tamilnadu
Visit Mountain Valley Airport in Tehachapi if you can!
I spent a few weeks at Minden. Did wave, got to 19.000 ft. Glorious area.
Minden might be better for big XC flights?
Hi Stefan, yes, I think so. It has a better infrastructure and local knowledge base, and is quite known for XC flights. Check it out!
I took my first glider lessons at Truckee years ago! Unfortunately I couldn't get over the vertigo and headaches from motion sickness. When my kids grow up I plan to live in an RV next to a sailport one day and take it slow training my brain to handle it.
Oh, so sorry to hear this. Most likely the rough conditions in Truckee are also not good for motion sickness.
I´m a glider pilot from Germany and I also have huge problems with motion sickness. I started gliding in 2017, got my license in 2018 and have been flying until 2022. This season I´m taking a break from gliding because it is just too frustrating to land every time even tough the weather conditions are good. I fly single engine aircrafts now and only when there is not too much movement in the air.
What do you use for filming, and which filter do you use?
Welcome to CA! Sorry I didn't get to meet you, but excited for your upcoming videos!
Thank you!
Is the USA the only place which doesn't automatically recognise foreign licences?
No, I think there are many other countries. They do recognise the licence but they need to validate it. At the end only costs time and is a bureaucratic thing.
Awesome video Stefan! I've been following you and your adventures for some time. So glad to see you flying in Tahoe. Welcome to California.
Awesome, thank you! :)
I was flying out of Minden at that time. Was some great Sierra soaring on those days.
Really awesome conditions for September!
California is broken.... it's like 2022... they're still living in 2020
too many bureaucrats
