I'd love to see a practice session with Meshuggah, when they are learning their songs. Can you imagine, one of the dudes keeps screwing up a tiny little bit, and one of the other boys yells "no, no, no, NO , NO!!!! It's not xlxlxloxxxlo. It's xlxlxloxxlo!!!!!!" Fun times! Love these videos. Love your way of explaining this stuff.

They actually don't practice together until right before tour. They write the music separately on the computer and share the files with each other. When the songs for the record have been selected, they record the songs having never even played with each other. They never jam together as a band.
@@drumkidstu they did play together for the previous album, don't know for Immutable.
@@morganshibby8941 I meant jamming in terms of actually writing music together. They write on the computer. For TVSOR they rehearsed beforehand so they could record it live, at least rhythm guitars, bass and drums. Leads, solos, and vocals were recorded after the fact. For this album they recorded all separately again.
I don't know how a group of people can remember and play such a complicated song, let alone play a whole set of (just as complicated) songs, over an hour long. To think that we've pushed music to this level blows my mind. Amazing what you can do with 12 notes. Playing that off-beat china over the top of this insanely complex pattern is heroic.

I don't know either how bands like Meshuggah and Tool can remember their set lists. Ok Ok I know it's masses of practice and experience, but when I was in a band in which songs were mostly verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, double chorus (all in 4/4!), it would still be a struggle to play 10 songs and not mess up at least once!! Super-human!
I honestly find easy to lean the songs, because they are all written in pattern, is not random. After listened some time I learned the pattern of Bleed, Clockworks, Do Not Look Down, Demiurge and still learning Marrow patterns. At least is easy on guitars/bass because the drummer is who "says" when is time to change patterns, so if your drummer is good you won't have any problems. (So yeah, if you watch Haake playing live you'll see him always counting in some way, so I think the band is following him, which makes easy to the band in general, because only one needs to count, and the rest only need to focus on his instrument)
@@twls153 Good job. Marrow is a head fuck. I guess to some extent, learning the complex patterns is just more interesting and forces you to really dig into memorising them rather than just remembering a load of predictable chord proggressions in different orders. I assume they play to some sort of click track so everything (including the lights) is nicely in sync
@@drunkship12 Like getting the fills and everything right was really hard to learn for me on drums i think everyone struggles at first with that song its really fun to play it tho so definetely worth learning it
I'm a huge Meshuggah fan, but, since I've known Car Bomb, Meshuggah doesn't sound THAT hard anymore. :)
That off-beat china is so sick, that for me is the standout element of this new track.

Riff 3 is such a mind fuck. Trying to keep track of a pulse and the number of measures makes you feel crazy. Doesn’t help that when Jens comes in it’s syncopated.

Have you ever considered covering Videogame Music? Things like the Metroid, Spelunky and LOZ soundtracks can get really, *really* rhythmically funky.
In fact, I may or may not know of a game coming out soon with some especially strange rhythms.

Link's Transformation (Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess) by Toru Minegishi uses 13-tuplets for the majority of the piece.
Cave (Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess) by Toru Minegishi is a way more ambient track, but when the least interesting time signature in it is 11/8, you know things are getting wild.
One that I myself am working on uses polymetric Tihais.
